Even as the UT Forest and Wildlife Department is finding it hard to deal with the monkey menace, there are no takers for the monkey catching business in the city.
The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has imposed a ban on the use grey langurs to scare away simians. Besides, the monkey catchers no more find the business lucrative.
Conjunctivitis cases on the rise in city

Air-borne germs are multiplying in the damp weather resulting in an alarming rise in the number of eye infections.
At least 10 patients with symptoms of conjunctivitis, commonly known as eye flu, are reporting in hospitals and clinics across the city.
MBBS admissions under HC scanner

Admissions to the MBBS course at Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, are under the judicial scanner again.
The high court today issued notice of motion to the GMCH-32 on a petition filed by candidates Arpit Agrawal and Rishita
Malik. They alleged that the names of candidates, who submitted incomplete application forms, were included in the provisional merit list, the revised provisional merit list and the fresh merit list displayed on August 7.
Rakhi festival: Commercialising the very bond of love

Women need emotional support to deal with menopausal changes: Experts

A number of men and women aged above 60 years sought knowledge on symptoms and problems associated with changes in women after menopause.
During a seminar held at Max hospital, Mohali, doctors sensitised men on emotional and physical discomfort of women during and after menopause and their responsibility to take their wives for consultation since women often surrendered to it.
Show-cause notice to two employees

Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation Limited (CITCO) has sent show-cause notice to two of its employees for allegedly causing financial loss to the corporation by allowing sale of hot rolled (HR) coils from its sales depot without paying the central sales tax (CST).
Technical snag hits power supply

Technical snag in the power substation of Sector 52 resulted in power cuts in various sectors today. Power cuts ranging between three and four hours were imposed to repair the fault.
I-T survey at three hospitals in P’kula

Special passport adalat tomorrow

Good news for those passport applicants whose application was lying pending for the past three years due to various objections as the regional passport office (RPO) is going to clear the pendency in the next one month by conducting a special passport adalat. For around 1,000 applications of 2010, which are pending because of various objections in the files or due to non-submission of required documents will be cleared in the passport adalat. The adalat will be held on August 21 at the headquarters office.
UT SSP deposes in corruption case

UT SSP Naunihal Singh deposed before the CBI Special Court in a case pertaining to Naveen Sharma, Sub-Inspector (SI), who had been allegedly caught along with a middleman taking an illegal gratification of Rs 5 lakh last year. The SSP was summoned by the court to give statements viz a viz prosecution sanction accorded by him in a CBI case.

Suman case: Commission accepts plea against GMCH-16
Chandigarh, August 19
The UT State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Chandigarh, today accepted the appeal of the counsel for Suman's family in the Suman contempt case contending that the GMSH, Sector 16, was liable to pay compensation to the family. As per the application moved by the counsel, the GMSH is liable to recover the compensation amount from the guilty doctors and hence liable to pay Rs 4.30 lakh to the family.
18-yr-old girl ends life
Chandigarh, August 19
An 18-year-old girl committed suicide on Monday after she failed to qualify the entrance exam for medical lab technician at the
PGIMER. Her body was found hanging at her residence on the PGIMER campus this morning. A suicide note was also recovered from her home. Her parents were not at home when the incident took place.
‘Evaluation system still in its infancy’

“The Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system has not been fully developed,” said CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi today. He was in the city to attend a workshop organised for principals of CBSE schools from the region at Stepping Stones Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, Chandigarh. He said teachers were still using the old methods for the implementation of the system and assessing students. Students were still getting the projects that are not related to subjects, he said.

Kids ‘R’ Kids School, Sector 42, Chandigarh, demonstrated the importance of Raksha Bandhan in our folklore and tradition by enacting a skit, “Goddess Lakshmi and King Bali” today. The children learned about the love between brothers and sisters through a rakhi-decoration activity. They stressed on the need of platonic love in the daily life and the immense responsibility that the festival symbolises.
