Another man dies cleaning sewer
Ludhiana, July 31
A factory worker lost his life due to asphyxiation when he entered a sewer line of a private factory located at Focal Point, Phase V, here today. The deceased, Lokesh Kumar (35), had entered the sewer line along with another factory employee to clear the choked sewer.

Even though the festival is 20 days away, people are buying rakhis and gifts to send them to far off places and abroad, said an official at the Postal Department.

More than 200 enrolled on last day in post offices
Ludhiana, July 31
Being the last day, there was rush to get Aadhaar card enrolment done; and (right) residents wait for their turn at a post office in Ludhiana. It was the last day of enrolment of Aadhaar cards at the post offices today. The contract between the India Post and the IT firm empanelled with the Postal Department carrying out the enrolment work Smart Chip ended today.

Traders irked over lack of cleanliness

After numerous complaints about lack of cleanliness in various parts of the town and several protests organised by the residents of different localities against the Municipal Council authorities, the traders and commission agents of Old Grain Market, Jagraon, have also opened front against the local municipal council due to lack of cleanliness in the old grain market.

Panic grips Khanna as bus plunges into canal

Panic gripped the region following the news of a bus falling into canal near Sirhind Bridge early in the morning today. Those, whose friends and relatives had gone to New Delhi recently, were among those who panicked more. Inability to contact expected travellers further enhanced anxiety.

Students display creativity

A display of creativity was witnessed at Inter-National Institute of Fashion Design, Ludhiana, where students of final year displayed their talent through a runway project. As a part of their fashion design curriculum, students have to carry out certain runway projects in their full day workshops which aim at developing their design skills.

Operators demand loans to buy new buses
Ludhiana, July 31
School bus operators have demanded that they be provided loans to buy new buses. During a meeting of School Bus Welfare Association at Sarabha Nagar, office-bearers also demanded an exemption from the payment of taxes on school buses, so that they could provide the service to students on a reasonable fare.

Will ensure railway overbridge is completed at the earliest: Tewari

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari has called for an early completion of the railway overbridge at Lakkar Pul. During his recent visit to the city, Tewari also visited the spot to assess the progress of the work.

The kindergarten students in Spring Dale Senior Secondary Public School, dressed in mango dresses presented a wonderful scene on Wednesday. Various activities were performed in the school to mark the significance of the occasion. The students of Class I to III came dressed as mangoes and brought mango desserts in their lunch boxes and relished it. Collage making competition was also a part of the festival in which students of Class IV and V showed their talents.

Two drug peddlers arrested
Phillaur, July 31
The local police has arrested two persons for drug peddling. The accused were identified as Satnam Singh and Sarabjit Singh, both residents of Nakodar. The police recovered 100 gm of intoxicant powder from their possession.

Youth hurt as wall collapses
A 25-year-old youth was injured after a wall collapsed at a garage near Punjabi Bhawan on Wednesday. The injured has been identified as Raj Kumar. He was visiting the garage for the servicing of his taxi. The injured man was rushed to the Civil Hospital for treatment. He sustained injuries on his head and back.
