Traders threaten to go on hunger strike
Our Correspondent

Fatehgarh Sahib, July 27
The Director of General Central Excise Intelligence, New Delhi, has issued summons to over 300 iron and steel traders hailing from Mandi Gobindgarh and Khanna to appear before him along with the sale records.

The department issued notices after forged sale papers were seized during a raid on the premises of three iron and steel traders and two brokers, who were reportedly involved in the theft of central excise. Affidavits were also submitted to the department regarding bogus sale and purchase, and names of certain firms and traders were also mentioned.

Gurmeet Singh, president of Steel Trader's Association, Mandi Gobindgarh and Khanna, alleged that the excise officials were harassing traders unnecessarily. He said, “Officials raided the premises of three traders and got affidavits from them forcibly. The department has its office in Ludhiana, but they are being summoned to Delhi in order to harass them.”

He alleged that the officials of the department wanted to get 20 per cent prize money from the department by showing that they had detected embezzlement of central excise worth crores of rupees.

“The iron and steel industry is already passing through recession and it has become very difficult to run units. More than 50 per cent industrialists have disconnected their power connection but the excise officials are adamant upon destroying the Punjab-based industry in a planned manner.”

If the harassment does not stop, we will sit on a hunger strike in front  of Sonia Gandhi’s residence, said Singh.

Punjab rice millers’ body seeks increase in milling charges
Our Correspondent

Fatehgarh Sahib, July 27
Punjab Rice Millers’ Association has demanded an increase in the milling charges of paddy from Rs 15 per quintal to Rs 65 due to a steep rise in power tariff and transportation charges. The association has put forward the demand, also taking into consideration the rise in the minimum wages of skilled and unskilled labour and the salaries of staff deployed to administer office and to run the mills on a daily basis.

The press secretary of Rice Miller's Association, Punjab, Nakesh Jindal, said, “The millers have been getting Rs 15 per quintal for the past 15 years. The entire scenario has changed now, but the millers continue to get the same rates.” The association has also demanded an immediate release of their 10 per cent securities lying with the various procurement agencies for the past six years. Paddy milling bills had been cleared and millers had submitted the affidavits to the district heads of the procurement agencies to pay any type of upturn that arises in the later stages. There is no logic in blocking crores of rupees of millers, said Jindal.

The association has urged Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon to look into the matter so that the agro-based sick rice industry may survive.
