Traders threaten to go on hunger strike
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 27 The department issued notices after forged sale papers were seized during a raid on the premises of three iron and steel traders and two brokers, who were reportedly involved in the theft of central excise. Affidavits were also submitted to the department regarding bogus sale and purchase, and names of certain firms and traders were also mentioned. Gurmeet Singh, president of Steel Trader's Association, Mandi Gobindgarh and Khanna, alleged that the excise officials were harassing traders unnecessarily. He said, “Officials raided the premises of three traders and got affidavits from them forcibly. The department has its office in Ludhiana, but they are being summoned to Delhi in order to harass them.” He alleged that the officials of the department wanted to get 20 per cent prize money from the department by showing that they had detected embezzlement of central excise worth crores of rupees. “The iron and steel industry is already passing through recession and it has become very difficult to run units. More than 50 per cent industrialists have disconnected their power connection but the excise officials are adamant upon destroying the Punjab-based industry in a planned manner.” If the harassment does not stop, we will sit on a hunger strike in front of Sonia Gandhi’s residence, said Singh. |
