1 killed, 41 hurt in accidents

A 70-year-old woman was killed and 40 others were injured in separate road accidents due to overloading of vehicles in Kalka and Pinjore today.

HC breather for residents

In a significant order expected to benefit 50,000 residents of the city, who have been blamed for carrying out “need-based changes” in the flats of the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB), the Punjab and Haryana High Court said the action could be initiated against them only under the yet-to-be-notified new policy.

Man stabbed to death
Chandigarh, July 21
The police has booked three persons for allegedly killing a man at Hallo Majra this evening. The victim, Vinod, was stabbed multiple times in the head and chest and his throat was slit. The police has arrested Rajkumar and his wife Archana, while the third accused, Sonu, is on the run.

Another student dies
Chandigarh, July 21
Ten-year-old Amanpreet, who had suffered serious injuries in an accident between a school bus and a private transport bus on the Kharar-Ludhiana highway near Mamupur village, succumbed to his injuries at the PGIMER today. Mehakpreet (16), a student of Class X at Indus Public School in Nawanshahr Badala village, and the bus driver, Harinder Singh (45), had died on the spot while Harpreet Singh (13), a student of Class VII, had died at the PGI.

Woman alleges police inaction

After a dowry case was registered against a retired judge's son last month, the police has now registered a case of forgery against the accused, Pradip Bhandari, after the complainant alleged that an amount of Rs 41 lakh had been fraudulently withdrawn from her fixed deposit account.

12-kg poppy husk recovered from bus
Chandigarh, July 21
The police today recovered a bag containing contraband from a Haryana Roadways bus (HR-69-A-9953) at the Sector 17 Inter-State Bus Terminal. The bag contained 12 kg of poppy husk. A case under Section 15 of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.

Cyclist killed in accident

A 33-year-old man died after hit by a car near the Botanical Garden in Sarangpur last night. The victim, a Mohali resident, has been identified as Nand Singh. According to the police, he was going to his home home on cycle when the car, driven by Suresh Kumar, a resident of Shimla, hit him . The victim was rushed to the PGI where he died.

3 booked for fraud
Zirakpur, July 21 A case has been registered against three travel agents for duping 15 persons of their cash on pretext of sending them abroad. The accused have reportedly duped the victims.
