School honours 5 for excelling in sports
Patiala, July 21 Introducing these players to everyone, principal of the school Dr Amrit Aujla said though the school had churned out various national-level players since its inception, these five players had made a mark for themselves by donning the Indian colour during international tournaments. Giving the account of each player’s achievements, Jagjit Singh, head of the Sports Department of the school, said Kanwarpreet Singh had already created a niche for himself in boxing and had won a bronze medal in the President’s Cup at Kazakhstan, apart from various other international and national medals. Harbir Singh Mann, a Class XI student, is a national sub-junior gold medallist and had won a silver medal in the national that was held at Andhra Pradesh in April 2013. He had just returned from the month-long India camp from Aurangabad. He has started boxing just one year ago. The third player was 16-year-old Rahul Gotwal of Class X who has been selected in the Indian School Cricket Team in the U-17 category. He is a left-arm spinner and has a hat-trick to his credit in the National School Games. Armin Virk, a Class XI student, who won a bronze medal during the National Cycling Championship at IG Stadium, New Delhi, is currently attending the India camp in New Delhi. Armin will be competing in the World Junior Cycling Championship that will be held in Scotland from August 7 to August 11. She is the daughter of Jitender Singh, chief cycling coach of the Indian team. Lastly, Kawish Bawa, who had won a gold medal in the Senior National Championship held at Rohtak in March 2013, has also won a bronze medal in the Federation Cup Championship in 2013. He won a gold medal in the SAIF Championship in 2011. He also participated in the World Fencing Championship in 2010. School principal Dr Amrit Aujla honoured these players and wished them luck for their future endeavours. The principal said they were a motivating force for other students. |

In India for a noble cause
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 21 A Class XII student of Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering technologies, she is also involved with ‘Girl Up’ campaign, an initiative of the United Nations Foundation. Through this campaign, American girls are given tools to raise for empowering their disadvantaged counterparts in developing countries. This is done through education, healthcare and leadership training. A president of the school Rotary club and political discussion club, she is also a reporter of the newspaper of her school. “I came to India to study how NGOs and local institutes are solving the problems of the general public in the society and particularly of those living below poverty line. I visited NGOs such as Prabh Aasra in Patiala, Ashakiran School in Hoshiarpur, Jan Shikshan Sansthan in Chandigarh, and SOS Village in Rajpura. I was surprised to see how the leaders of the organisations with the support of the donors make a huge difference in the lives of the needy,” said Mehar. Inspired by the dedication of the people who work at the NGOs, she has decided to start a project ‘Power of a Pencil’. Mehar Gujral said she will work in association with Prabh Aasra to build a children home for the underprivileged. “I will be raising funds for this project by involving my community in the USA,” said the NRI teenager. |

Schoolteachers without salary in Fatehgarh Sahib
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 21 District Treasury Officer Sohan Singh has expressed his inability to pass these bills without any orders from the higher authorities. The president of the government-aided school teachers’ union, Ravinder Joshi, said, “It is unfortunate that teachers are forced to take to roads and protest to get their salaries. The affected teachers are finding it difficult to meet the both ends meet and are not even able to pay the school fee of their children. With rising prices and no one ready to give any commodity on credit, certain teachers are suffering from depression.” The president of the private aided school management, Nakesh Jindal, said, “Due to the non-clearance of the salary bills as well as sanctioning of vacant posts of teachers, the managements concerned are finding it difficult to run the schools.” The government should immediately pass the salary bills, he said. |

Woman alleges police inaction
Chandigarh, July 21 The case has been registered following the court orders. Anu Bhandari, estranged daughter-in-law of Justice KP Bhandari (retd), today stated that the police had failed to act even after registering the case. Anu said Pradip Bhandari and her mother-in-law Prabha Bhandari had misused her bank account and had withdrawn an amount of Rs 41 lakh. "Taking an advantage of my illness, they made me sigh blank documents," she said. They also forged certain documents to fulfil their nefarious designs. The amount was transferred in the joint account of Pradip and Anu and later withdrawn from that also by Pradip . Anu has also accused the police of conniving with the other party. Ultimately, She had to approach the district courts following which an FIR was lodged on July 17, 2013. But no arrest has been made so far. The accused are roaming freely in the city and the police is doing nothing. The police has not even questioned them," she said. Anu said her account statement showed 631 transactions between February 19, 2007, and to April 24, 2010. |

Two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths snatched a bag from a Sector 38 resident today. The incident took place near the Sector 22 market. The victim, Sukhpreet Kaur, reported that she was attacked by the youths, who snatched her bag containing a mobile phone, a computer tablet and Rs 4,000. The victim told the police that the accused were wearing helmets and she could not note down the registration number of the vehicle. A case of assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft of property carried by a person and punishment for theft has been registered under Sections 356, 379, of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Sector 17 police station. |

3 matches in a day leave players exhausted
Chandigarh, July 21 Unaware of the fatigue that the players would face, the organisers conducted three matches within a gap of an hour gap on a single day, to declare the winning team and to select a player for Germany exposure tour. Four teams, two each from Delhi and Chandigarh, participated in the final of this privately-ventured soccer championship. A team comprising of 11 players played a total of three matches on Sunday. Two top teams faced each other in the final taking the tally to four matches a day for top two teams. The matches were organised under a format of 20 minutes for each half. Though the players were provided with good lunch yet lack of rest made them suffer more in the scorching humid heat. “The organisers must have conducted the talent hunt programme for at least two days, so that the players can have proper rest and perform well. Playing three or four matches a day is really a tough task even after having full confidence on stamina,” said a player. Not only the players but the supporting staff from the organising team was also seen facing the exhausting schedule. “Thank god it will be over soon with the award ceremony as soon as the match finishes,” said a member of supporting staff. City boy makes it to international event The Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA), which has already produced number of players for the nation, has once again produced the best from the City Beautiful, here this evening. CFA mid-fielder, Inder Mohan Singh, won the North Zone event of Bajaj Allianz Junior Football Camp Season IV and will go to Germany to attend the International Junior Football Camp in Munich in association with the FC Bayern Munich next month. A student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, and disciple of a former Indian football team captain, Harjinder Singh, at the CFA, has was selected among the 60 finalists from North Zone to represent India. The selection process was started on June 18. Inder is a regular member of the CFA’s senior batch. The mid-fielder has also won laurels after the team lifted the UT Administrator Cup last year. In the final round of the selection, he ended his campaign as the highest scorer including a hat-trick against Delhi team. “He is among the brightest players and he has proved it. The academy is serving this city with the best and will continue to produce players for city and the nation,” said Harjinder Singh. “I am very happy to win this exposure trip to Germany. Hopefully, in this international camp, I will overcome my shortcomings and will take a big leap to complete my dream of becoming a world renowned midfielder,” said Inder. On other hand, the Chandigarh-A team won the final of the talent hunt championship with defeating Delhi side by 4-1.The winners were awarded with a cash prize of Rs 75,000. |

Guru Nanak Public School lift cricket cup
Chandigarh, July 21 In the low-scoring final match, Guru Nanak Public School defeated Satluj Public School by 26 runs. The winning team while batting first and posted 67 runs before losing all the wickets in 29 overs. Amit remain the top-scorer of the team with his individual best of 19 runs off 36 balls while Divayansh contributed 16 runs off 26 balls. Carrom tournament to begin on July 27
Chandigarh, July 21 A total of six events, including men and women singles, boys’ and girls’ (junior singles) and boys’ and girls’ (sub-junior) singles will be organised during the three-day championship. The players Under-18 years and Under-14 years as on December 31 2013, can participate in the junior and sub-junior category, respectively. According to organisers, the players of top eight ranks will be awarded with ranking points that will be counted while selecting the team for Chandigarh for the forthcoming national championships.
