Govt to rein in vegetable hoarders
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 19
The Delhi Government today decided to conduct raids on the vegetable stores where wholesale dealers had hoarded the vegetables, resulting in the high prices of onion, tomato, potato and other commodities.

This decision was taken at a high-level meeting attended by the Delhi Food Supply Minister, Haroon Yusuf, PWD Minister Rajkumar Chauhan, many wholesale dealers and senior officials of the department concerned.

Yusuf said that the government is serious about controlling the prices of vegetables. Strict action would be taken against the hoarders.

He said there is no dearth of vegetables in the market. It is the hoarders who have caused the problems.

PWD Minister Rajkumar Chauhan said that a few weeks ago, the arrival of vegetables was affected in Delhi due to the floods in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, but now the situation has become normal and the rates in the wholesale market have come down.

He appealed to women to purchase vegetables from the retail market after seeing the wholesale rates in newspapers.

Chauhan said that retailers are taking five to ten per cent margin on each vegetable.

The PWD Minister directed the Azadpur Mandi Committee to give the wholesale price of every vegetable in newspapers every day.

49 cases filed in tenant verification campaign
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 19
Delhi Police have registered 49 cases this month against the tenants and owners, who have been arrested for the non-verification of tenants residing in the southeast district.

“Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPc (Power to issue order in urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger) were issued directing that no landlord or owner of any house shall rent out accommodation to a person until he has furnished the tenant’s particulars to the respective police station. Similarly, property dealers who arrange the accommodation are also liable to furnish the particulars of the tenant to the police station concerned,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (South East District) Ajay Chaudhary.

The officer added that the contravention of these orders is a punishable offence under Section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.

The arrests were made after the police had started a Special Tenant Verification Drive in southeast district on July 1. The aim of the drive was to strengthen the security for the forthcoming festive season and Independence Day. The police are apprehensive that anti-social elements may seek hideouts in the residential areas in southeast Delhi.

Delhi Police have undertaken regular awareness campaigns for tenant verification at the police station level.
