It’s only words!
Asi tah nak te makhi ben ni dinde tu sanu makhi khan te majboor kar rahi ae je eho jeha pyar rabb da dharam ae tah sanu es rabb ton bagi samaj…Punjabi actor Gugu Gill couldn't sound any less appealing with his dialogue from the movie Jaildar! Saada patola saathon hi ohla, Jaswinder Bhalla made the line popularly with Mel Kara De Rabba. And who can forget Om Puri's Saun gaajran di from Long Da Lishkara?
Dialogues that have stayed with you, one-liners that have now been well-etched in your memory; Punjabi cinema like any other entertainment medium has created a special slot and place for hard-hitting dialogues. This means dialogue writers are now given a special place; after all they provide dialogues like Advocate Dhillon ney ne kala coat aivain nai paya from Carry on Jatta! Dialogue writers in Punjabi cinema share their preferences and what makes a 'deadly' line. The outline Director, screenplay and dialogue writer Dheeraj Rattan looks at a good screenplay as a platform for writing good dialogues. After writing dialogues for Singh Vs Kaur, Mel Kara De Rabba and Jatt & Juliet 1, Dheeraj looks at forward to the future. "After all it is the screenplay that dictates the beginning and the end of the film," he says. Personally, Dheeraj loves to write romantic dialogues but he doesn't rule out the chances of improvisation on the sets by actors. "Firstly, most films in Punjab are being made under the comic genre so dialogue writers are hired to add that extra punch," he shares adding that a dialogue finds acceptability with the audience if it is delivered well by the actor.
No frills Whether it is writing a story or filling the gaps with dialogues, it is the spoken sentences in the film that make us cry or laugh. "I believe the audiences are smart, they don't need to be told everything repeatedly, which is why I avoid adding frills to the dialogues," quips Jatinder Mauhar who along with Daljit Ami wrote the dialogues of his film Sikander. There are no set rules or guidelines that dialogue writers follow, nevertheless they have to follow the story and understand the characters. "I want my dialogues to convey the meaning, so why should I beat around the bush. I give dialogues according to the character and I don't stuff them with extra humour for impact," he adds. Jatinder claims that chances of improvisation on his dialogues are reduced, however he is always open to an actor adding a line or two till it makes sense." Character calling Story, screenplay and dialogue writer Amberdeep Singh enjoys his work to the hilt. Drawing inspiration from people around him, Amberdeep writes dialogues that make the audiences cry in laughter! Daddy Cool Munde Fool and Jatt & Juliet 2; he looks at a character before giving dialogues. "I have to understand the character thoroughly, whether he talks a lot or is he the quiet kinds." Writing the dialogues for Jatt & Juliet 2 along with director Anurag Singh was a challenge for him. "The first Jatt & Juliet was a hit, but I had seen the characters and how they behave; giving them something different this time was a task," he adds. Amber likes all his dialogues, he laughs, "It definitely depends on the actors, if they grab it well the job is done," shares Amberdeep, who is writing story, screenplay and dialogues for Jalandhar By Pass and Gorian Nu Dafa Karo (working title). Spot on Actor and dialogue writer Rana Ranbir understands the pulse of the audience. After having written dialogues for Fer Maamla Gadbad Gadbad, Rana shares that a dialogue writer cannot shove anything down the throat of the audience. "A dialogue has a life; how long it will live depends on how much 'real-depth' we have
added. Comedy definitely requires extra effort, as making people laugh through different dialogues is the real challenge." However, it is the understanding of a character that makes all the difference. But sometimes an actor can also mar the dialogue. jasmine@tribunemail.com

For the sake of art
With an objective to foster cultural contacts within the region and to accord recognition to artists, The Haryana Institute of Fine Arts (HIFA), a cultural organisation, will organise a four-day cultural festival at the Punjab Kala Bhawan under the aegis of Ministry of Culture and the state government from July 18 onwards. The exhibition will showcase the works of more than a hundred artists who hail from Haryana.
Many artists, including Padma Bhushan Krishnen Khanna, Kavita Jaiswal, Ram Viranjan, Braham Prakash, Priyanka Batra, Amarjeet, Pardeep Kumar, Yeg Kishore Banger, Rishi Raj Tomar, Pawanendra Kumar Tiwari and Anchal Wadhwa will also be awarded on the occasion. The festival will also feature daily cultural programmes by internationally acclaimed artists, including Padma Bhushan Gopal Das Neeraj, Nooran Sisiter (Coke Studio), Ustad Gaji Khan Manganiyar and Sudhir Pandey. Besides, this exhibition, while encompassing different paradigms of art and culture, aims to celebrate the literary aspect as it exhibits books from some of the most acclaimed publication houses. While elucidating on the core objectives of the exhibition, Piush Kumar, secretary, HIFA says, "Art is scaling new heights every day in Haryana, but it lacks support due to the absence of Lalit Kala Akademi and other such academies. In such a situation, the state is becoming a 'wasteland of art and culture' because no other organisation promotes art." Piush Kumar's concern was echoed by Diwan Manna, chairperson, Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi even as he rues the absence of Lalit Kala Akademi and Sangeet Natak Academi in Haryana, "Our disinterest and non-involvement in the preservation and growth of rich Haryanvi culture bemuses me. In my plea to the government, I would ask them to introduce Lalit Kala Akademi and Sangeet Natak Akademi in Haryana." Nirupama Dutt, a seasoned writer, says, "The longest running joke on Punjab is that the only culture that it does have is agriculture. Theses stereotypes were banished by the advent of various art organisations like Lalit Kala Akademi. As HIFA begins its journey towards celebrating art, not only will the artists benefit from this journey, but will also show a path to other organisations, which aim to promote art. This is not just an exhibition, but an art festival." (From July18 to July 21, 2013) amarjot@tribunemail.com

Of Tops and Duffs
Poor contact with the ball is the most frustrating and embarrassing part of golf. If a golfer has a directional problem, he can compensate this by aiming to the left or right to allow the shape of the shot to still end up at the target. But when a golfer is not able to make repeatable contact with the ball they cannot create any compensation for it and will struggle through the round. Loss of confidence is almost completely associated with poor contact in any form of the game - whether it is the long game, putting or around the green. Lack of analysis is the biggest problem as most golfers blame it on ‘head up’. If a coach or golfer could cure this so called ‘head up’ they would have cured all the problems associated with poor contact with the ball. But unfortunately, this is not the case and poor contact can be a complex issue.
To determine the reasons for poor contact we have to understand the way the club head approaches the ball or the ground. If it is hitting the ball first and then the ground (if the divot tends to be ahead of the ball) the club would be approaching on a steep angle. If it tends to hit the ground first and then the ball it would be coming too shallow (if the divot is before the ball). To determine whether your swing is steep or shallow, place another ball a few inches outside the ball you are hitting to relate to your ball position. After you hit your shot see whether your divot is ahead of the outside ball, in line with it or behind. This would give you the angle of approach. When a golfer is duffing (hitting behind the ball) or topping the ball the first thing to check is whether the ball position is correct or corresponds to the bottom of the arc of their swing. To determine the bottom of the arc, make a practice swing a mark where the divot begins. The ball should be placed at this position as this respects the particular golfer’s swing. If the bottom of the arc does not correspond to a conventional ball position one has to determine which component of the swing is causing the club to either come to shallow or steep. (More on this in the next week’s article) (Grewal has coached several national champions and professionals apart from being coach of the Indian golf team for the Eisenhower Cup (World Cup) in 2008. He is currently the Director of National Golf Academy of India and CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy. If you have any queries get in touch with him at parexcellence@tribunemail.com)

Show time
Following your gut, more often than not, helps you make the correct decision. Just as is the case with Chandigarh-based Usha Chaudhary, owner of Chaudhary Cine Productions, who announced her first Hindi film Love & Parchhai as a producer recently.
Greet the woman who has the experience of being a make-up artist for the last twelve years and who now is all set to handle money instead of make-up kits! “It is a dream come true for me. I have an experience of working with big stars like Miss Pooja and I think I am experienced enough to handle the project,” she says catching her breath as and when she can. The movie has been directed by Shamim Sayeed and the star cast includes names like Reet Sharma, Pankaj Bali, Saheb Singh and the only pretty face that made all the sense — Diljott. The movie is being co-produced by Ijaz Ahmed Sheikh who did the talking for everyone. “It is a romantic thriller that will be shot in Fiji, Australia and many other exotic locales,” shares Ijaz. As for the director Shamim, who has an experience of twenty years in Bollywood and who has worked as assistant director with Manmohan Desai and David Dhawan, “the story of the movie is the real hero”. We bet he meant real star! The story has been written by Nahid Khan and Pranabh Dhiwar will edit it. The only sensible thing around, the pretty girl Diljott is playing the lead in Yaar Anmulle 2 as well. Rest, the lesser said the better. Following your gut is not always wrong!

I am not surviving on silly controversies: Honey Singh
Honey Singh and flaks go hand-in-hand but the rapper claims he is not surviving in the industry for the "silly controversies" he is associated with. The 29-year-old singer, who was booked by Punjab and Haryana High Court for singing vulgar songs, said he is doing good in the music business because of his talent.
"In the first place I did not write that song (Balatkari), I am not stupid to create silly controversy when I can do good work. There are people who survive on these tactics, I am not one of them," Singh said in an interview. Having started his career as a recording artiste, he later became a Bhangra producer. He got his first break in Bollywood with his song in film Shakal Pe Mat Ja. "My music worked and on people's suggestion I started rapping and achieved success through my hardwork. My management and I did not realise when we went from Punjab to pan-India and had shows all across the country," he said. The rapper is reportedly in talks to lend his voice for a special song in Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chennai Express, releasing this Eid. Asked about the project, Singh said, "I had received a call from Shah Rukh Bhai. In fact I met him at his house while I was in Mumbai. He's a fantastic person and appreciated few of my songs including his personal favourite Angrezi Beat. Singh’s other projects include songs in upcoming movies Boss, Zaalim Dilli, Bajaatey Raho and Mastaan. —

Shraddha Kapoor not Welcome!
News has it that the makers of Welcome Back, producer Firoz Nadiadwala and director Anees Bazmee are extremely upset with reports of Shraddha Kapoor having apparently rejected the film, especially for the wannabe youngster was never approached for the role in the first place.
The truth is that the actress was never considered for the film. The producer had made it clear since Welcome starred Katrina Kaif, the current number one actress in the country, in a leading role and the sequel required someone of the same stature. Says Firoz Nadiadwala's spokesperson, "Shraddha Kapoor has never been approached for the film and its shocking for her to even suggest it. The role requires someone who is extremely glamorous, has great screen presence and is a fine actress and frankly glamour isn't Shraddha Kapoor's forte. Lets not forget that Welcome starred the country's number one actress Katrina and hence the role would be suitable to an actress in the top rankings and Shraddha Kapoor doesn't figure in the top 10.That being kept aside, it would require years for someone like Shraddha who is barely a film old and has worked only with newcomers, to get to the level of working with a huge brand name like John Abraham. " Adds Aneez Bazmee's spokesperson, "Aneez Bhai is very amused by the rumours. It seems to have become a trend for wannabe actresses to declare that they are receiving big films like Welcome Back and are rejecting them since this is the only way they get publicity." Sources also go on to state that the actress had pulled a stunt like this in the recent past too declaring she was approached for Bhushan Kumar's next with Umesh Shukla starring Abhishek Bachchan, when in reality she was never approached for the film.
BMB running ahead at box office
This Friday three films clashed at the box office — Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Shorts and Sixteen — and distributors say Farhan Akhtar-starrer biopic is doing good business at the box office despite getting mixed response from the critics. They predict its weekend collection could reach Rs 30 crore mark.
Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines told IANS: "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is going great in multiplexes, but not that great on single screens. On Friday and Saturday, the film has collected approximately Rs18 crore. Most probably the film will collect around Rs 30 crore by the weekend." In his bid to familiarise achievers to the moviegoers, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra went behind the camera to bring the story of grit and determination of former Olympian athlete Milkha Singh, also known as Flying Singh, on the celluloid. His efforts got mixed response from critics. Some critics praised it, saying the synergy in the story is subliminal and Farhan has got so well under the skin of the Milkha's character. Others find it too long, and criticised it saying the director has reduced the human saga to a melodramatic and over-wrought tale. But it seems that critics' ratings have not influenced the viewers judgement. The film collected an impressive Rs 8.5 crore on its opening day. Rajasthan-based Sunil Bhansal of Yashraj Jai Pictures Pvt Ltd, sees a bright prospect for the film and says if footfalls don't dip on Monday, it may join the Rs.100-crore club. "So far, the collections are going strong and if the film doesn't dip on Monday and goes steady, then it may be in the Rs 100-crore club." —

Heart’s calling
As a teenager, actress Zoe Saldana used to work at fast food chain Burger King. She says the experience was enjoyable. Sharing her journey thereafter, she said: "I planned to go to college to train as a dancer, but instead I joined a theatre troop in Brooklyn (New York) and little by little things started to happen."I wish I was the sort of person who has the strategic mindset of making plans and drawing up lists, but I'm not." The 35-year-old also said that she is attracted to open-minded people. "I don't like to put labels on people because I don't like people to put labels on me. But if I have to pick one quality, I would say the people I'm attracted to are naturally inquisitive and open-minded and want to grow," she said. "I must say those people tend to be geeks like me. I used to hang out with cool people, but after a while I found there were such one trick ponies, I was just getting bored," added Saldana. — IANS

Telly to silver screen
While we have seen many television actors switching to films, the new generation is not happy with any role but wants the best — the lead roles. Here are a few of them who have managed to sign on good films and have made a mark for themselves. Barun Sobti: He quit his successful show Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon to do a film. His fan-following is so huge that after he quit audiences threatened not to watch the show if he was replaced, so the channel had to end the show. Barun's debut film is a romantic comedy called Main Aur Mr Right with co star Shenaz Treasurywala that will release in a few months. He also has a cricket-based film titled 22 yards lined up.
Jay Bhanushali: Six years of acting and hosting later, Jay reached the peak of his success with winning Nach Baliye this year. Now he will be seen in Vikram Bhatt's Hate Story 2 directed by Vishal Pandya, which stars Surveen
Chawla.
Karan Kundra: After gaining popularity in Balaji's Kitani Mohabbat Hai, Karan was seen as host of Gumrah but he also did a few Punjabi films and was successful. He has a three-film deal with director Vikram Bhatt with debut in Horror Story that releases in August end. He also has a psychological thriller titled Rum Pum Posh lined up.
Manish Paul: He has been a super-hit host in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, but few remember that he acted in serials as well. Now, Manish is looking at the big jump to movies and has bagged a comedy thriller Mickey Viru's directed by Saurabh Varma. He is also the lead in the sequel of Tere Bin Laden.
Prabhu Deva shares some tips
We hear that Prabhu Deva was on the sets of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa this week, along with Girish Kumar to promote their upcoming film, Ramaiya Vastavaiya. Now, naturally in front of India's rubber man, anybody can seem like a non-dancer. However, Siddharth managed to leave everyone shell-shocked when he matched steps with Prabhu Deva on the Jhalak manch! Sid got the chance of learning a couple of steps from the dance master himself… Prabhudeva was requested to come up on stage to teach Sid some dance moves. Anyone who is asked to dance next to Prabhu Deva would look a little nervous! When Prabhu demonstrated the steps for the star, Siddharth matched them in complete rhythm and looked extremely confident dancing next to Prabhu Deva! When asked about his experience of dancing with Prabhu Deva he said: "I had always heard about Prabhu Deva's humility but finally I came across this down-to-earth person on Jhalak sets and it was a very pleasant experience. Knowing that I am a non-dancer, he made me very comfortable before teaching me some dance steps. He kept telling me that I am a fabulous dancer and something like this coming from Prabhu Deva was completely awe-inspiring. After meeting him I can say that he is an amazing dancer, but an even better human being."
Aamir is a mama’s boy!
Whoever coined the term 'Mama's Boy' was definitely inspired by Aamir Ali! While we condemn men who are recognised in this category, this particular one should be readily approved! Actor Aamir Ali, who plays Soumya in Sahara One's Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga, had once promised his mother that he will never ride a bike owing to an unfortunate and life-threatening incident that took place in his life.
But recently while shooting for Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga, he was caught in a tricky situation when he had to shoot a bike sequence. During narration of the story, Aamir was to ride a bike with his onscreen wife Angana. Hearing this, Aamir got very excited but his joy was short-lived when he suddenly remembered the promise he had made to his mother. Aamir requested the producer to amend the scene to avoid the bike sequence. After a lot of convincing, the producers relented and agreed to alter the bike with a car!
Role reversal
Going off-air
Sony's Dil Ki Nazar Se Khoobsurat, starring Soumya Seth and Rohit Khurana will end this week on July 19. Though the show was hyped to be a take-off on Beauty and the Beast it could not convince the masses. The show also faced tough competition from shows on rival channels. |
