Sushil Manav
Tribune News Service

Sirsa, July 8
The students of various schools and colleges in Sirsa, who got the opportunity of meeting former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam recently, are still in a state of fascination due to his intellect and simple style of living. Those who received degrees from Kalam during the first convocation of Jannayak Chaudhary Devi Lal Memorial College of Engineering at Sirsa are so happy that they will never forget the day for the rest of their lives. APJ Abdul Kalam was in Sirsa on Saturday, where he interacted with students of different schools and colleges at CMK National Post Graduate College and delivered his convocation address at JCDM College of Engineering.

About 1,000 students from several schools and CMK National Post Graduate College for Women got the opportunity to interact with Kalam.

"My students are feeling inspired and are in a very high spirit after meeting APJ Abdul Kalam," said Ankur Chhabra, a lecturer of English at Government Senior Secondary School, Bappa, in Sirsa.

Richa, who received her gold medal and degree in electronics and communication engineering from the former President, said she would never forget the day for the rest of her life. "Despite scaling such a height in his career, he is down-to-earth. He spoke to me and said thanks after I received my degree and medal from him," said Richa.

"As I went upto him after the announcement of my name, Kalam sir, who had my gold medal in his hands, asked me in a lighter vein whether I would like to have it. When I said yes, he gave me the medal and the degree with his usual charismatic smile," she added.

Dr Gurcharan Dass, Principal of JCDM College of Engineering, said it was a great day in his life to share the stage with the Missile Man. Kalam's simplicity could be gauged from the fact that the moment he ascended the stage of the auditorium at CMK National Post Graduate College for Women, he complemented Virender Chauhan, an associate professor, at Chaudhary Devi Lal University, Sirsa, for his dress.

Chauhan, who was coordinating the interaction, was donning a Rajasthani turban with traditional Haryanavi dhoti and shirt. When Kalam was delivering his convocation address, it was hot and humid inside the auditorium. Abhey Singh Chautala, who was on the dais, noticed this and directed the college officials to arrange some pedestal fans for the former President.

However, when Kalam noticed some officials coming to the dais with two pedestal fans, he paused for a while, stopped the officials to start the fans and went ahead with his speech.

Vegetable prices shoot up as rain hits supply
Tribune News Service

Sirsa, July 8
Owing to heavy rains in the hills, prices of green vegetables have started skyrocketing in Haryana.
Tomatoes that were sold for Rs 10 per kg till last week are available for Rs 60 a kilo these days.

The usual redness of tomatoes has gone and the ones available these days are pale green with a tinge of redness.

Cauliflower that was readily available for Rs 10 to 15 per kg is costing more than Rs 80 per kilo in retail market today.

“I purchased 10 kg peas for Rs 20 a kg from a wholesaler in Fatehabad vegetable market last month and placed its seeds in my freezer to preserve it for some days. Today, when I went to a retail shop to purchase some peas, he quoted a price of Rs 100 per kg,” said Mamta, a homemaker.

Sudha, a teacher from Sirsa, said a steep rise in the prices of green vegetables has dealt a severe blow on her monthly budget.

“Today, vegetables like bell pepper (shimla mirch) that sold for Rs 15 to 20 a kg is available for Rs 60, price of bitter gourd (karela) has reached from Rs 15 to Rs 30 a kg and Indian round gourd (tinda) from Rs 15 to Rs 30,” she said, adding that even onions had started making homemakers shed tears at Rs 25 per kg.

“In this part of the year, we procure green vegetables like tomatoes, cauliflower, peas and bell pepper etc from Sundernagar, Bhunter, Bandrol, Kullu and some other parts of Himachal Pradesh, where rain has damaged the crops making vegetables costlier,” said Harsh Chander, a partner in Zamindara Vegetable and Fruit Company, Fatehabad.

He said he purchased tomatoes for Rs 30 per kg from Himachal yesterday and with Rs 10 per kg as transportation and other expense, it sold for Rs 55 to 60 per kg in retail.

“However, today they (wholesalers in Himachal) have quoted me a price of Rs 40 per kg, which will definitely mirror in the retail prices tomorrow,” he said.

Vegetables being costlier, fruits like plums (aloo bukhara) and mangoes are available at relatively cheaper rates owing to the bumper crop of these fruits this year.

‘Implement police reforms to curb crime’
Tribune News Service

Karnal, July 8
The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Haryana Crime Records Bureau, Liak Ram Dabas said immediate police reforms were the only way to curb the increasing crime, especially against women.

Dabas has been recently included in the National Police Mission. He said the growing awareness and sensitivity of the society against crime was a major challenge and unless police reforms were carried out aggressively, it would be difficult to deal with prevailing crime situation in the country.

"Police is the main and the primary wing who is responsible for maintaining law and order and investigation of crime. In order to enable the police to effectively discharge its duty, police reforms should be speedily implemented in the entire country, " said Dabas.

The commissions and the committees constituted by the government for police reforms from time to time after independence had given valuable recommendations. The High Court and the Supreme Court had also issued directions on the basis of recommendations of the commissions and the state government was taking action to implement the directions.

"The work and sphere of police activities had expanded manifold due to rapid modernisation, industrialisation and urbanisation and accordingly the expectation level of the people from police had also gone up," Dabas said.

"New methods, techniques and police reforms were imperative to meet the expectations of the people," he added.

He further stated that in order to provide a congenial environment to police personnel to work sincerely without any pressure on mind, the salary and allowances of police force should be enhanced and more facilities should be provided to them and their families.

"Since, the police personnel remain engaged in their duties, they have little time to look after their families. Therefore, the government should pay special attention to their welfare," said Dabas, pointing out that some states had taken initiative in this regard.

Accommodation to families of policemen, subsidised food grains, preference in government jobs and other incentives would be a laudable initiative to boost the morale of police force, he observed.

Congress has ruined poor farmers, says Abhey Chautala
Ravinder Saini

Jhajjar, July 8
Accusing the Hooda government in the state of executing "anti-farmers" policies, Indian National Lokdal (INLD) MLA from Ellenabad Abhey Singh Chautala said the Hooda government has worked for ruining the lives of poor farmers by acquiring their fertile land at a much lower rate than the market price.

While addressing a public meeting at Jahangirpur village here recently, Chautala said the Congress government was fully accountable for the woeful plight of the farmers in the state, which had pushed them to the verge of destruction.

He promised the farmers present at the meeting that if voted to power in the poll, the INLD would get back their costly land that was acquired by the Congress government on nominal prices in the name of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

"The farmers in this time of crisis are recalling the policies of the INLD government, which had turned out to be instrumental not only in giving a philip to the agriculture industry in the state but also to give them a special recognition at national level," said Chautala.

He maintained that the Congress in Haryana was afraid of the INLD instead of the Modi cadre as it knew that the INLD was the only strong party in the state which could oust it from power in the coming Assembly elections.

"Poor governance of the Hooda government in the state has entirely exposed it and the people are eagerly waiting for their turn to teach it a lesson by exercising their franchise against the Congress in the Assembly elections," said Chautala.

He questioned that how could a government satisfy the common man with its governance when it had failed to satisfy its leaders who were not only engaging in scuffling on a public platform in the presence of their MPs but also blaming CM Bhupinder Hooda for ignoring them.

Samiti approaches political parties
Nawal Kishore Rastogi

Rewari, July 8
The Apharan Virodhi Jan Sangharsh Samiti has sent a communication to the state INLD president, Ashok Arora, the Haryana BJP chief, Prof Ram Bilas Sharma, HJC supremo Kuldeep Bishnoi, president of the Samast Bharatiya Party, Sudesh Agarwal, state secretary of the SUCI (Communist), Comrade Satyavan, chief of the Aam Admi Party, Arvind Kejriwal, and doyens of other political outfits urging them to forcefully raise the issue of the abduction of two minor Dalit girls - Parul and Divya vis-à-vis the persistent failure of the police to trace them.

It may here be mentioned that identical letters in this regard have been dispatched to the above dignitaries by the Samiti chief Lala Ram in accordance with a recent decision of the Samiti.

Notably while 7-year old Parul daughter of Rajesh Kumar of the nearby Cheemnawas village, was kidnapped from the Rewari Railway station on May 4, the abduction of 5-year old Divya daughter of Sonu Balmiki of Bhiwani district, from the station premises here took place on May 20.

It is deplorable that while shopkeepers and traders of Rewari, in response to a call given by the Samiti, observed a total bandh here on June 14, the police had failed miserably to trace the two minor girls even after a passage of weeks together.

A spokesman of the Samiti Rajender Singh advocate recalled that the Samiti, in its meeting at Cheemnawas on June 19, had given a one-month ultimatum to the district administration and the government while clearly stating that if the failure of the police to trace the two minor girls persisted as before, they would again hold a panchayat on July 21 to chalk out their future course of action.

Indian players win medals, but ‘lose’ nationality
Sunit Dhawan/TNS

Gurgaon, July 8
In a rare feat, Indian men as well as women kabaddi teams have bagged gold medals at the 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games held at Incheon in South Korea recently. Sportspersons from India also won a few other medals in other sporting events.

However, thanks to a technicality, the members of Team India could not celebrate their grand victories in the prestigious international sporting event with the usual patriotic fervour.

The reason: This time, the Indian sportspersons were allowed to participate in the event not as representatives of their country, but as Independent Olympic Athletes. This was due to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) being placed under suspension.

Hence, the players from India were not allowed to carry their national flag on the field, nor pose with the Tricolour even as they received their medals or got group photographs clicked. India’s national anthem was also not played during the award ceremonies.

“Our emotions at that time cannot be explained in words…We had won the gold medal, but still didn’t feel on top of the world as something very important was missing…we had a lacking feeling deep inside, and we missed our Tricolour and Jana Gana Mana…” recounts Gurgaon-based Sunil Dabas, the coach of the Indian Women Kabaddi Team who steered her squad to victory for the seventh time in an international event.

Gurgaon opts for treatment of sewage
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, July 8
The district administration has finally found a way to deal with the depleting water table and groundwater scarcity. The city has become the first in state to begin the treatment of sewage and reduce the use of groundwater or potable water. Out to compete with the states like Gujrat in water management, the Haryana Urban Development Authority now plans to produce 65 MLD treated water and supply to the areas like License Colonies and the areas falling under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation.

The city had switched over to the treated water for construction purposes when the High Court barred builders from extracting water for it. Since then, a little quantity of treated water is being used by some builders in Gurgaon.

"We now have an effluent treatment plant, and packaged sewage to meet the demand of water. We can now give this treated water to everybody through proper channels of pipeline. This is an answer to all the apprehensions about the massive construction projects, which are supposed to dry up the groundwater. We are working out on the modalities of the supply," said a HUDA official.

The residents have welcomed the move but have put forward a request that in the first phase the entire quantity of water should be tertiary treated.

"The HUDA, Gurgaon, has taken the help of some experts in this project .The experts have suggested secondary treatment. We know our need, but outsider can only give tailor-made suggestions. After the secondary treatment we can't use water for general purpose as it may contain some microbes. After the tertiary, water can be used for general purpose," said Raman Sharma, president, Gurgaon Progressive Forum.

CPM questions 'ordinance route' to food security
Tribune News Service

Rohtak, July 8
The state committee of the CPM has questioned the promulgation of an ordinance on food security rather than debating and bringing the draft bill in the forthcoming monsoon session of Parliament.

In a statement issued here, the state secretary of the party, Inderjit Singh, criticised the Congress for allegedly withholding the vital measure for over four years even as the Left parties had been campaigning for it and now the party was taking the ordinance route bypassing Parliament which amounted to contempt of parliamentary democracy.

"The CPM is in favour of universal food security, which means at least 35 kg of foodgrains per month at Rs 2 per kg to all needy families," Singh said, adding that the party was totally opposed to any dilution of the proposed bill.

He further emphasised that a strong universal PDS was imperative not only for food security but also for a sound procurement policy favouring the farmers.
