Cong sees irregularities in counting of votes

Ropar, July 4
Congress workers from five villages today submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Pradip Kumar Agrawal a day after sitting on dharna at Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway against alleged irregularities in counting of votes during the panchayat poll.

The Congress workers were led by Chamkaur Sahib MLA Charanjit Singh Channi. They alleged that the staff deputed at the counting centres in villages Kajoli, Kalaran, Kainor, Adhreda and Tapparian Amarsingh had declared the Akali-BJP supported candidates victorious even after the Congress backed candidates got more votes.

This practice was adopted by the counting staff at the centres where Congress supported candidates won with a margin of less than 50 votes. Recounting was allowed at such villages and ultimately the candidates backed by ruling alliance were declared winners, alleged Channi.

He said Baljinder Singh, a Congress worker, had won with a margin of 47 votes for the post of sarpanch at Kajoli. However, a rival, Niranjan Singh, an Akali leader, demanded recounting and still Baljinder won by 24 votes. Then counting was done for the third time and Niranjan was declared winner by one vote. “Same was done at Kalaran village, there recounting route was adopted to declare the SAD worker as winner,” he alleged. “At other villages, the SAD supported candidates were declared winner and the staff left the place even without providing details of votes polled to the contestants,” said the MLA. —TNS

Rice millers suffer due to shortage of space with FCI
Our Correspondent

Fatehgarh Sahib, July 4
Resentment prevails among rice millers in the state as the deadline fixed by the state government for delivering milled rice to the FCI by June 30 has expired and still more than 6 Lakh MT of paddy is lying in the rice mills.

The rice millers alleged that the FCI was not accepting the milled rice from them due to the storage of space. As a result, the rice millers have stopped milling the paddy.

Nakesh Jindal, secretary of the association, said a delegation of the Punjab Rice Millers’ Association led by Taresm Saini, national president, and Jagdeep Singh Cheema, secretary, and district presidents called upon Partap Singh Kairon, Minister for Food and Civil Supply, and urged him to extend the milling of paddy period till August 31.

As per the new policy of the state government, only those mills will be allotted paddy for milling from the next year, which have delivered 100 per cent milled rice by June 30.

The association members urged the government not to take such step as they could have delivered the milled rice had the FCI accepted the rice.

He said the delegation also urged the minister to take up the issue with the Union Government for providing space and to extend the milling date till August 31.

He said the minister had assured the delegation that he would take up the matter with the Union Government. He also assured that the date would be extended.
