More the merrier
Punjabi cinema has forayed into creative directorial and acting spaces, which has provided much-required refuge from the recurring romantic and comedy genre. Needless to say, the industry is now extending an open invitation for experimentation on the rock-solid turf of creativity that welcomes talent. Myself Ghaint is a brand new endeavour towards the evolution of Punjabi film industry and though it is a directorial debut of Akashdeep Singh Batth, who has earlier directed short films and is only in his early twenties, he is certain that this film will etch a cut above the rest by virtue of its script and story.
Director's cut "I wanted to do a Punjabi film that has more to itself than just comedy and romance. This film is about three friends; Deep Kaint (Gaurav Kakkar) in the main lead, Abs (Maninder Velly) and Lehri (Rj Deepak of Radio Mirchi)," says Akashdeep. "The story revolves around these three friends, especially Deep Kaint, who gets into a severe mess because of a rich man who is his namesake. As the story unfolds, the villain poses a severe threat to the rich Deep Kaint's wife and the drama rolls," he says while adding, "The film will release in October." Leading the act While talking about his role, Gaurav Kakkar shares, "Most of the Punjabi films are scripted in a fashion that spares very little avenues for the lead actor to explore his talent, as most of his work is done by the supporting actors while he is left there to just look good. In this film, as a lead actor, I have my due and though my character is that of a regular Punjabi person, his different shades become known courtesy the script." Message & impact Popularly known as Pak Pak Deepak, in the film, this Rj is essaying the role of a philosopher who infuses his tongue-in-cheek humour to lighten up the pitch of the film, "My role is not funny in-your-face. In fact, he does not even intend on being funny, but the way he says things triggers an instant laugh. However, this film also attempts to convey social messages that are humour-coated. For instance, when men look at a woman walking down the street, they would often pass derogatory remarks on her or about her and in this film, you will see how we have tried to make people think before they speak ill about women," says Deepak. Beauty with brains She has walked the ramps for some of the most decorated designers; she has been one of the top models of the country and has won the title for Mrs World too. Now, for the very first time, she will be seen acting in a Punjabi movie. Hail Aditi Govitrikar as she becomes the cynosure of all eyes as she talks about her role and more. "I love doing regional cinema and in this film I will essay the role of the rich Deep Kaint's wife. I am not that fluent with Punjabi and that is precisely what my role demanded; the character speaks very little Punjabi and is a glamorous housewife, who has all the money at her disposal." So what made her take up this role? She replies, "I look for good scripts and this one was more than enticing for any actor to take up the role." Presently, Aditi, who is a mother of two, is producing a film. The film will also bring Brownie Parashar in an important role and he was more than excited to be back after a long time. The shooting of the film is still underway and it has the budget of a whopping two crores. "I am also working on another VFX film called We the Warriors and its trailer has already been released," says Akashdeep. amarjot@tribunemail.com

W(h)et your look
Monsoon has landed earlier than expected…if you are still at sea on how to carry your look, here is a quick guide that we sourced from the best in the beauty business just for you…
Starting with the top, mane matters are the most difficult to handle this season. Showers, humidity and the heat make the bad hair day come more often. Not to worry, Samantha Kochhar, MD, Blossom Kochhar Beauty Products Pvt Ltd, has some styles that you can easily flaunt without the urgency to visit a salon. Read wavers, sleek ponytails and fish tail here. Get wavy To get this natural wavy look, the hair has to be conditioned properly and dried completely. Part your hair into four sections ear to ear and forehead to neck line. Take your curling tong, apply some styling mousse. Take thin sections and roll it inside the curling rod one by one. Sleek ponytail Straight hair is the best to get this look. Apply mousse or gel all over your hair line to get a neat look and avoid broken or baby hair. Comb your hair straight back and make a tight ponytail on the crown or crest area. Secure it with a rubber band. Take a thin hair section from the ponytail, apply gel on the strand and wrap it around the rubber band to cover it. Something fishy Fish tail can be done on any kind of hair structure. Get your hair on the side of the neck with your finger. Part the hair into two sections. Take a thin section from both sides and keep on overlapping it till the end of the hair strand. Secure the braid with a rubber band and loosen it slightly to get a messy look. Men matters For men, Sassoon is the style of the season. Rachit Malhotra, creative director, Femina Plus Beauty Salon, just back from a short training from Vidal's London, advocates the look — short and neat, in geometrical pattern with lots of texturing and layers on the crown. Make it up When it comes to make-up, green is the colour Samantha swears by for Monsoon 2013. Reserve that for the evening. Here is how to sail through the day: Morning dew This look is best for the day with light or minimalist foundation only as much required and essential with eyes rimmed with soft brown and waterproof mascara. Use cheek and lip stains for a dewy look and top it up with a coral lip gloss. Neon effect Keep the eyes neutral with a generous coat of waterproof mascara, cheeks subtle and go for bright lips in neon colours. This look will sail you through the day. Smoking hot This is a look for the evenings. Use a dark brown eye shadow. One can also experiment with green. Use white gold shimmer on the upper eyelids. Apply a bold, black, waterproof kajal and mascara to intensify the look. Use a light pink blush and a pale natural lip colour to complete the look. Colour code Ritu Kolentine from Cleopatra asks you to balance colours. So if your dress is bright neon pink, go slow on face colours. Lips are bright and nice a la Marline Munroe this season. Kajal is back big time and not just black. Choose colour. It goes well with Indian wear as well as Western, you can even mix and match black with blue. mona@tribunemail.com

Understanding the ball flight
Jesse Grewal The flight of the ball is the only important part which determines the efficiency of the golf swing. In golf, we try to emulate a particular style adopted by some player but the truth of what change or style is required by a particular player is only the one which would improve some aspect of the ball flight. There are five things to watch in the ball flight. To do this correctly, use an alignment stick or place a club parallel to the target line so that the player is aligned correctly to the target. Now watch the following – Does the ball start towards the target or to the left/ right? Is there any curvature in the flight of the ball? Does it spin to the left/right? Does it have the correct trajectory or is it too high/low? Does it fly the desired distance? Is the flight repeatable? Understanding the cause and effect determines one’s ability to be able to fix a problem in any of the above aspects of the ball flight. The starting direction of the ball is determined mainly by the path of the club or the plane of the swing. The ideal path is an inside to square to inside path. This actually would mean that you could hit a ball placed two inches from a wall without hitting the wall. This swing would get the ball to start relatively straight. If the club is travelling from out to in it would hit the wall on the downswing before hitting the ball. This type of path makes the ball start to the left (pull for right handed golfers). If the club is travelling on an in to out path it would make the ball start to the right (push) and if there was a wall the club would hit the wall on the follow through. The position of the club face determines the curvature. If open at impact it would lead to a slice and if shut a hook. The trajectory is determined by the club being in a de-lofted position or an added loft position. If the hands are way ahead at impact it would be de-lofted resulting in a lower ball flight and if the hands are behind the club head at impact, it would lead to a high ball flight with loss of distance. The position of the body relative to the ball also influences the trajectory. The desired distance is the most complicated part of the ball flight as most of us are unhappy with the distance we get anyway. We always want more! The major component is club head speed but other parts contributing to this are timing, width and length of the swing and also the angle of approach of the club. The main component of repeatability is an on centre strike or hitting the sweet spot repeatedly. This comes from so many factors and its best to just try and judge the quality of strike by the sound of the shot. Once we determine which aspect of the ball flight needs improvement can one begin to work on the swing. (Grewal has coached several national champions and professionals apart from being coach of the Indian golf team for the Eisenhower Cup (World Cup) in 2008. He is currently the Director of National Golf Academy of India and CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy. If you have any queries get in touch with him at parexcellence@tribunemail.com) |

A spiritual treatise
An IIT graduate, off to join a job in Bangalore, a workshop and how it changes his whole outlook towards life; makes for the precept of Just 7 Days to Excellence.
Penned by Amrit Gupta, retired director from Indian Audit and Accounts Department, this book aimed at youngsters tries to decode the idea of body, mind, soul, need of a spiritual guide and more. "In the Gita, there is a mention that the number of those who try to seek God is severely limited; mine is an attempt to take the message to the youngsters," says the writer. A Paramhansa Yogananda follower, Gupta admits that he got inspired for the narrative structure of the book by Robin Sharma's The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari. "I cannot put in words the lessons I learnt from my spiritual quest; I want the young to seek the same path," says Gupta, who launched the first version of the book last year. The feedback from his initial readers was very encouraging, which made Gupta re-do the book on the basis of the feedback and launch the second edition. While the writing has been the process he enjoyed, getting published was a tougher ask. "I guess god only came to my rescue," says Gupta who is on to his second book based on the two great teachers the world had - Swami Vivekananda, Paramhansa Yogananda. "We have been lucky to have been passed on the spiritual knowledge by our elders. It helps one navigate the labyrinth of life well. I want to reach out to the younger lot for they are the ones who need it the most." The book published by Unistar is for Rs 200; along with it, Gupta also launched its Hindi version, translated by his wife Ramesh Gupta. mona@tribunemail.com

Devoted to music
The two times academy award winner AR Rahman has full devotion towards music. His in-depth connection with music is so much that he cries while singing a soulful song. He loves his instruments and gets excited while touching them. Rahman has not studied much but is the principal of a music school. Rahman, when asked in an interview about knowing his music skills and is relation with music, said, “My mother (Kasturi Shekhar) realised it, not me. My father was an arranger for composers and a Man Friday for many of them. He died when I was just nine. Till five years after my father died, she would rent out his musical instruments to run the house after which she was advised to sell the equipment and live with the interest, but she refused saying, 'No, I have my son. He will take care.' She has music instincts. Spiritually she is much higher than me in the way she thinks and takes decisions, for instance, her decision of making me take up music.” The 47-year-old revealed that his mother made him leave school when he was in class IX. Rahman was little disheartened at the beginning but later he understood that her mother’s decision was the most appropriate for him, “I was torn at that time. And I thought that after a couple of years when I earn money, I would go back to finishing my education. But little did I know that education is about learning from life and putting you in a situation teaches you more than getting educated in a college. Not that studies is bad, but it's the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Wisdom comes from within. Knowledge is acquired and can sometimes put a screen on your wisdom.” He also said that he loves his mother but their relation is not like a movie’s mother-son relation, who keeps hugging. Instead he said that he has never hugged her mother. The composer works through the night and says that if at the time of dinner, a song comes to his mind to compile then he ditches his dinner. Music is a thing that excites him and makes him low as well, “Every time I sit for a song, I feel I am finished. It's like a beggar sitting and waiting for God to fill your bowl with the right thought. In every song, I ask help from Him. Everybody around is so good, so to create music that will connect with so many people is not humanly possible without inspiration.” Rahman prays five times a day and his morning prayer is at 5.30. One more thing came from the composer is that he is a Rajnikanth fan. He stated, “I believe in many things he believes in. Learning from life is what I have learnt from him.” The singer has one regret in life that he missed the opportunity to work with Michael Jackson. We all hope that his passion for music remains the same and his school brings out world’s best singers and composers. |

Sallu refuses to get seduced
If the latest buzz to be believed then Salman has said no to do any intimate scene with Jacqueline Fernandez in Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kick.
According to the grapevine, there is a sequence in the film where Jacqueline has to seduce Salman, who passes out on the sofa in one scene but Salman refused to shoot that part, instead called up Sajid and asked him to remove the scene or rewrite it. It’s been over two long decade’s journey for Salman in Bollywood but he never did any lip locking scene with any actress. He made this rule for himself. Well this somewhere shows that intimate scenes do not get you great hits and Salman has definitely managed to bank lot many hits without doing intimate sequences. At present Salman is busy in completing the shoot of Sohail Khan’s Mental and many other directors are standing in queue, waiting for the Dabangg Khan to work with them, like; Boney Kapoor’s No Entry Mein Entry, Atul Agnihotri’s O Teri and many more.

Happy go lucky
Actress Sonam Kapoor is contented with not being the number one movie star in Bollywood and is rather grateful for what life has offered her.
Sonam made her debut with Sanjay Bhansali's Sawaariya in 2007 which bombed at the box office. After that she appeared in Delhi 6, which again failed to garner attention from the audience. She achieved commercial success with her next film I Hate Luv Storys. However, her next releases — Thank You, Mausam and Players — again failed at box office. "I may not be the number one movie star or my films might not be doing too good. I am grateful for what life has offered me. I have got a great family, parents are together, have a great sister, I get to holiday. All these things make me grateful towards life, for everything. I always say - have an attitude of gratitude," Sonam said. Sonam hogs the limelight either for her beauty, her poses or just her innate fashion sense. Besides her acting career, Sonam has made a name for herself as a fashion icon. "I love dressing up. I have people helping me with it. I am not going to take credit for that. I have a stylist, make-up and hair stylist. I feel I am lucky. I am grateful for this life that God has given me. I am happy as I am getting to do work that I want to do and enjoy doing it," Sonam said. But her fashionista image it seems is restricted only to real life as she plays de-glam roles in films like Raanjhanaa, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Mausam etc. "While I had de-glam roles in these films there are others like Aisha, I Hate Luv Storys where I am dressed up nicely. I think I look good without make up. Because the characters are real I need to be real," Sonam said. "I don't like wearing too much make-up. I think people like me in de-glam roles, they like the simple side of mine in films,” she said.

Poonam bares it all
Starlet Poonam Pandey has bared it all for the new poster of her debut movie Nasha. The 22-year-old model has shed her clothes and goes Full Monty for the new poster launched recently.
Poonam hides her assets behind two placards. The placard reads: "Nasha...Get addicted this monsoon". Nasha is a story of 18-year-old boy who gets attracted towards a 25-year-old woman. He falls head over heels for the girl and she too seduces him and takes him to bed. The trailer shows, Poonam Pandey sheds her clothes and gets intimate with the boy. She becomes an obsession for the boy and the obsession which later turns violent. The movie is directed by Amit Saxena of Jism fame. Nasha is all set for release on July 26. The director is full of praise for Poonam. He said that she understood her role very well and portrayed it without any effort. "I was completely blown by the talent she (Poonam Pandey) has, by the talent that was on display and it was effortless. She was absolutely effortless," Saxena said. “There was not a single moment when I felt that I am working with a newcomer or I have to be extra careful — nothing! She made it such a wonderful ride for me," added Saxena. For the role Poonam has apparently gained some weight for the film. "I was skeptical before going ahead with it but when I read the script, I thought I would not justify the role unless I don't gain some weight to fit the bill," Poonam said. "Nasha is a passionate love story between an 18-year-old boy and a 25-year-old girl. Yes, it's a bold film, but it's basically a simple love story. It's a very different subject and Poonam has done a great job in the film," said director Amit Saxena.

Fantastic forty
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has revealed that his feminine side is more developed and perhaps that’s why he doesn’t get to do as many macho roles. During a press conference in Mumbai, Khan sat with his knees touching and ankles crossed, and said that he is a little bit effeminate.
In director Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express, the actor plays a 40-year-old Rahul. When asked if it was a relief to play a 40-something instead of turning back the biological clock, he said that he doesn’t understand why he is asked such questions. The actor, who played a guitar-strumming youngster in love with a young Katrina Kaif for a good part of Jab Tak Hai Jaan, said that he is a fantastic lover at 47 and not a virgin. — ANI

No comparisons please
Tamil superstar Dhanush, who is married to Rajnikanth's daughter, says being the son-in-law of the iconic actor has not helped or affected him.
Dhanush got married to Rajnikanth's daughter Aishwarya in 2004. "Being his son-in-law doesn't do anything to me actually. I have always done my own work. It (his name) neither helped me nor affected me," Dhanush said in an interview here. He says it's not worth comparing his work with his father-in-law as their style of working are quite different. "My choice of films is different. My method of acting is completely different from his. So there is no room for comparison. And comparing a 20-25 films old guy with an icon is absolutely rubbish," he said. Dhanush is entering Bollywood with Raanjhanaa, but has not discussed about the film with his father-in-law. "To be very honest he has been very busy with his work while I've been with mine. We haven't spoken about this film yet," he said, adding he never discusses work with his dad-in-law. When asked about Aishwarya's reaction about him doing a Hindi film, Dhanush said she is yet to watch it, but right now they are quite thrilled that he is speaking in Hindi. Dhanush will be seen romancing Sonam Kapoor in Raanjhanaa which also stars Abhay Deol, Swara Bhaskar and Suraj Singh and is set to hit the screens on June 21. Even before his the release, Dhanush has decided to do yet another Hindi movie with same director – Anand L Rai. "Yes I am doing my next film here with Anand sir. We share a very good rapport. When we were shooting for Raanjhanaa, we came up with an idea and it was very fascinating. I thought we would do something later, but when we finished Raanjhanaa we got very close to each other and then I agreed for the film," Dhanush said. However, the actor refused to divulge details about the film, saying it was too early to say which genre it falls into. But he revealed that he would co-produce it. |

The chosen one
He is in his second year in Bollywood and two films old but Arjun Kapoor finds himself in a lucky space having bagged roles opposite top leading actresses, including Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone.
The 27-year-old actor made his Bollywood debut last year opposite Parineeti Chopra in Ishaqzaade. In his upcoming films — Gunday, Hindi remake of Telegu film Okkadu, Finding Fanny Fernandes and Two States — Arjun will be seen opposite Priyanka, Sonakshi Sinha, Deepika and Alia Bhatt, respectively. "I am really lucky in comparison to all the other young actors because I am working with all the top actresses whether it is Priyanaka, Deepika, Sonakshi, Parineeti. I am also working with Alia," Arjun said. Asked why he thinks he has become the 'chosen one' when it comes to casting in roles opposite almost every actress of this generation, the actor said, "I think I am one of the few actors in the younger generation, who looks good with all of them, which is a rare thing. I am the type who can fit in with a young girl like Alia and someone like Priyanka who is a woman." But Arjun is not yet content. He wants to work with every Bollywood actress, including his childhood crush Kareena Kapoor. "I want to work with Anushka (Sharma), Katrina (Kaif) and yes not to forget Kareena Kapoor as she is my first genuine crush. But I don't know when I will get the opportunity. It is always good to work with different actors, instead of repeating the same. May be by next year, I will have projects opposite them. I want to work with all of them," he said.

Ramayan to go off-air?
A few months ago, there were reports that Zee TV's Ramayan may go off-air, but the artistes of the show banished all those reports to be false claims. In fact, they are happily shooting for the project currently. As seen so far, Hanuman (Malhar Pandya) has managed to trace Sita (Neha Sargam) and is back with the ring that Sita gave him to hand over to Ram (Gagan Malik). In the upcoming episodes of the show, the audience will witness a war between Ram and Ravan (Sachin Tyagi). When we contacted Gagan, he said, "We are currently shooting the sagar (sea) sequences in which Ram tries to build a bridge that will connect them (his army) to Lanka."
Talking about the news of the show going off-air, he said, "Like I had mentioned earlier, the story isn't true. The show will go off-air only after we are done with the story." If sources are to be believed, the show will go off-air by October this year.

I am committed to TV industry: Rishabh
Child star, Rishabh Sharma, who has done many shows, including Kaali-Ek Agnipariksha, Mahima Shani Dev Ki, Geet, Ek Chutki Aasman, Sanjog Se Bani Sanjini, Lakhon Mein Ek and Mrs Tendulkar, will now be essaying the role of Bal Hanuman in the widely appreciated mythological show, Jai Jai Bajrangbali. From Kaali-Ek Agnipariksha to Jai Jai Bajrangbali…, how has the journey been so far? Fortunately, I did not have to struggle so much and the journey has been very good. Also, things are going pretty smooth with my new mythological show and I am learning a lot as an actor. I am committed to the television industry. What made you opt for television? My mother always encouraged me to act and focus on studies too. My first step towards television world was when I was offered a Crax Chips advertisement. After that, I did many shows, including a film, Veer, with Salman Khan. How does it feel like to be essaying the role of Bal Hanuman? I am really on top of the world now. I would love to be a part of mythological shows in future too. And for that, I will do my best to win the heart of the audience with talent. How has the shooting experience been so far? It is a learning experience for me. My co-star, Aparna Tarakad, always gives me tips on acting and dialogue delivery. She is very helpful and everybody in the team is supportive too. How are you coping up with your shooting schedule? I am shooting daily and it is very hectic during summer, but then this is what I always wanted to do, so I am happy doing it. How does it feel like to be working with Sagar Arts? It feels great. The director of the show, Prem Sagar and creative producer, Shiv Sagar, are very systematic in their style of working. Their genre is superb and this mythological show portrays the life of Bajrangbali. Do you worship on the sets? I am an ardent follower of Lord Hanuman. I worship daily before going for the shoot. What are your other interests and hobbies, besides acting? I love reading good books, which include mythological books too. |
