Lifting the bar
The summer is at its peak. What better than chilling out at these pubs where you are sure to roll in delight?
Jasmine Singh

You would agree to us calling it a revolutionary invention. The lightness in the air, the whiff of casualness, the chill of drinks; the loud noises often lost in the music…a pub spells the attitude ‘take-it-easy-bro’ loud and clear. In case you haven’t been a part of this casual fun and relaxation, just zero-in on these pubs and take your pick.

Underground blast

Underdogs is the first sports bar in the region that welcomes a young and happening crowd at the Elante Mall, Chandigarh. Spread over an expanse of 9,000 sq feet the outlet has a bar, restaurant and gaming zones.

The USP: The ambience of Underdogs is quite exhilarating and the essence of this lies in the sporty wall graphics, the shoe chandeliers, the croquet sticks, the baseball mitt bill holders etc.

Get sporty: The place has five spic-and-span pool tables, a multiple sports simulator, air hockey tables, the darts corner, the foosball, the shuffleboard, the table tennis table, the carom board and the multiple-board as well as arcade games to choose from.

Drink ‘n’ dine: Underdogs serves 15 plus types of beers enjoyed at bars around the world. Another interesting thing is ‘Beer on Tap’, which comes in multiple sizes to suit your table – from a pint to a sporty beer tube (2.64ltrs).

On an average: Two people can enjoy a fill at Rs 1,500—2000 (approximately).

British flavour

Made on the lines of a British Irish pub, 10 Downing Street boasts of rich interiors and great music. An array of cocktail brands and liquor makes this place a nice chill-out zone.

USP: 10 Downing Street offers a wide variety of liquor, something for everyone.

On the palate: If you are here, don’t miss the famous ‘atta’ chicken along with other world cuisines.

On an average cost: Two people can spend a nice and cool evening in Rs 1,500 (approx).

Sing along

If you wish to meet a lot of music lovers or people who can entertain you to no end with their singing talent as you sip your drink served cold, Peddlers is the place you could be looking out for.

The USP: A resto bar where you can drink, eat and get entertained from Monday to Monday; the other USP of the place is that it is based on a concept like ‘Tuesday is for Retro nights’, ‘Fusion is for a Wednesday’ and ‘Sunday’s is for Vikram Unplugged’. Special offers on alcohol are yet another check-out factor of the place.

On the palate: Indian, European and Oriental menu with lip-smacking pastas and curries. Wash it down with king pitchers, draught beer and cocktails!

On an average: In Rs 800-1000, two people can have a blast at the place.

Cool comfort

If you are looking for chilled beer, and only chilled beer, Wild West pub, Sector 35, Chandigarh, is your joint. One of the oldest pubs in Chandigarh, the place has a whiff of casualness about it.

The USP: The place is known to serve the most chilled beer. With the pub staff dressed in cowboy dresses, Wild West Pub transports you to the countryside.

Drink n dine: In addition to the chilled beer, which is served in a boot-shaped beer glass, you can also dig into the authentic Chinese snacks.

On an average: In about Rs 600 two people can chill their throat and wet their palate!

Cool connection

You couldn’t go to Australia this summer, but Café Oz and Bar makes up a little bit by serving a beer chilled at sub-zero temperature!

The USP: Multi-cuisine food, Victoria Coffee from Australia, tea and beer and an easy lounge ambience… what else can you ask for?

On an average: Spend approximately Rs 1,200 (two people) and go back refreshed.

Brewing magic

Brothers in music
Tanya Malhotra

For twins Eash and Eashan Goyal, western classical music is their forte; while Eash plays the piano, Eashan plays the guitar. The twins have been featured in the Limca Book of Records 2013 and the India Book of Records 2013 for their achievements. Adding one more feather to their cap, they have recently been acknowledged as the Youngest Asian Twin Brothers to perform western classical music by the Asia Book of Records. They showcased their skill at the Record Breakers Festival 2013 at Indira Gandhi Kala Kendra Auditorium, Noida, in February this year followed by a concert at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

They tuned into music at the age of five, when most of the children are struggling to get their words right and now they have reached the level when music is acting as emotional, social and spiritual therapy for them.

So, how do they handle the pressure of studies and music? According to the twins, music acts as a catalyst in the academics and personal development of an individual and helps in building thinking skill. Looking at their excellent result in the Board examination for class X, it all seems to be working out!

"Music is a perfect stress buster," says Meeta Goyal, mother, "I guess my love for western classical triggered the interest in the twins at an early age." Besides playing the melodious tunes on the piano and running fingers on the strings of the guitar, these twins also sing with equal proficiency. They derive inspiration from great composers as Bach, Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Oscar Hammerstein, Johnny Mercer, Christopher Norton and Evanescence to name a few.

What's next? Says Meeta, "They hope to do engineering as their career. Also, they intend to do a diploma in their respective instruments. If they choose music as their profession, we will support them."

I confess!
The confession pages on social networking site Facebook have provided a new platform for the youth to speak up…

To confess something is to stop running from the truth and face the reality, whether it’s a feeling or something you did. It’s difficult to truly confess. Or is it? The recent trend of confessions on social networking site Facebook has given it a whole new dimension and made it all the more interesting.

Complimenting is considered as a ‘must’ in social gatherings. Don’t you dress up to look beautiful or handsome? Admit it or not, when someone compliments us, it just feels like the efforts were worth it and the day dramatically turns exciting. As many as ninety per cent of the youngsters whom we caught up with in Chandigarh agree that it’s alright if somebody compliments you and tells you about their feelings. DJ Deepak from Girl in the Café says, “Passing unnecessary comments on people at clubs or street calls for trouble. It’s a great idea to introduce chat pages.”

The most popular among the city youngsters seems to be the Geri route confessions and compliments page with 2,900 likes in a couple of months, and the Chandigarh Nightclub Confession’s page with 2,700 likes in a month. With the administrator participating and quirky comments, the pages have gained overnight popularity. And now people all over Punjab, Delhi and Chandigarh are speaking their hearts out. Other such pages are college and school confessions.

Admin 1 and 2 of Chandigarh Nightclub Confession’s echo, “It is how you control the pages; we have zero tolerance towards any abuses or negative language, so girls feel secure on our page. We talk; play games, chat and advise each other. Also we try to keep it mellow while keeping the humour alive. It’s difficult to go about it, but we have witnessed many lives changing through our page and the happy faces keep us going.” Sunmeet Gill, Deepika Arora and Mukesh Verma echo, “This page has given us some really good friends!” Sam Verma says, “The best part is that anytime you go to the page, the admins are available to talk to you, whether it’s an advice or just to lighten up your mood. I don’t know how they manage it!”

Starting from the confessions of life and relationships, to sharing general information like which phone to buy, which club to visit, best places in Chandigarh..Facebook games, including saying something about the person who commented last, truth and dare and dedicating a song; these pages have a lot to give. Tushar Verma, participant at Chandigarh Nightclub Confession's says, “I just have to read these messages before I sleep and even when I am working or taking a break, it’s like an addiction.” Says Karanvir Singh aka Kanfuje, participant at Chandigarh Nightclub Confession’s.

I love the participation of the admins in this page particularly.”

Filly Singh, who is on the page, says, “I'm going through the worst phase of my life but reading all the confessions leaves a smile on my face.”

Simi Waraich, psychiatrist, puts forward her opinion, “Naming somebody on a social networking site may affect the person’s reputation, the good part is that most of these confessions are anonymous and they can help shy or troubled youngsters form a support group, which is socially acceptable.”

Confession time

  • It truly has become a small world, I can’t believe I saw a very old friend on the geri route. I didn’t even remember his last name. I just randomly went to this confession page, and mentioned his name and he replied. It wouldn’t have been possible to find him without this page.
    Deepika Chauhan
  • I saw a girl in Blue Blazer, saw her again in a mall and then at Girl in the Café, three week in a row. What a co-incidence! I don’t know who she is, but I think she noticed me too. It’s getting a little filmy.
    Harman Sawhney
  • CNC (Chandigarh Nightclub Confession) is one big family for me. I always used to think I have no friends and now I have 2,800 of them who are always there for me. I am able to move on from a very bad phase of life due to you all.

Vidya Balan is no crusader
Vidya Balan does not believe in giving out social messages through her movies. She just wants to act and do roles she likes

Social message on reel

Siddharth and I don't discuss cinema at all. I have stopped reading news about myself and do not take brickbats seriously. I don't feel the need to give a message with every film I do. In The Dirty Picture, Silk was unapologetically sexy. After the movie many women came and told me that they were okay being curvy and plump. All my movies don't have to give a social message.

Rules of life

Ghanchakkar will release 15 months after Kahaani and somebody brought this to my attention. I am not following any rules and I am here for a lifetime. I feel no pressure.

No reservations

I am here to do all kinds of cinema and work that interests me. I decided four to five years ago that I would only do films that I liked and it has worked very well for me. I don't want to do only women-centric films. I have a substantial role in the movie. I don't want any limitations or restrictions.

Cannes & criticism

I was unaware of the criticism of my clothes at Cannes. I came to know when I returned. Honestly, I felt awesome walking the red carpet and being a jury member and interacting with Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee and Christoph Waltz and so many other great people. I used to attend MAMI during my college days and this was a dream come true.

Madness is fun

I was surprised that Rajkumar Gupta offered me Ghanchakkar after we did the very serious and hard-hitting No One Killed Jessica. I didn't want to play a loud and boisterous character again but he said that he wouldn't make it without me. I read the script and I loved it so here we are. I am happy that this movie came my way as I was dying to do a comedy.

Brand crazy or street pick-up?

Suitability is the key word--brands or street wear don't matter.

Who would be your style icon?

Sonam Kapoor any day.

Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity?

Neha Dhupia and Sameera Reddy.

Which look would your prefer - sporty, chic or glamorous?

Glam all the way.

One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension?

Just don't like printed jeans.

Your take on accessories?

I am not much of an accessory person - the minimum the best!

What gives you a high on the confidence level?

When my comfort level is high, the confidence level is also high.

Doc Talk
Sun block
Dr Vikas Sharma

Our skin is our shield against the environment. When excessive temperature threaten to overheat our body, our skin protects the delicate inner organs and maintains a steady body temperature. However, in the process it bears the brunt of the heat and gets sunburned, tanned, wrinkled, blemished or damaged. Learning to protect the skin in the summer is thus very important!

Summer make-up

  • Keep it light! Layered foundation not only drips with sweat and looks patchy, but clogs the pores and aggravates pimples. Go for sheer loose powders and powder bronzers instead.
  • Avoid using hot steams during your facials to clean your pores. Instead, use a high concentration of essential oils that will help to stimulate circulation and open your pores.

Of UVA & UVB

The sun produces both visible and invisible rays. Invisible rays known as ultraviolet-A (UVA) and ultraviolet-B (UVB) cause most of the problems. Both cause sunburn and sun damage. UVB is more hazardous than UVA, but there is no "safe" UV light. Harmful UV rays are more intense in the summer.

UVB causes the skin to go red, and if unprotected for long enough, to burn. It also stimulates skin's pigment-forming cells, a natural protective measure. UVB is the main cause of skin cancers and premature ageing.

Effects of the Sun

Sunburn: Your chances of getting a sunburn is greatest between 11.30 am and 3 pm, when the sun's rays (UV-B) are the strongest. It is easier to burn on a hot day, because the heat increases the effects of UV rays. If skin is exposed to sunlight for too long, redness may develop. Severe sunburn causes skin tenderness, pain, and blistering. If you develop a severe sunburn or a fever, report to a dermatologist.

Aging: Their skin invariably becomes wrinkled, droopy and leathery, causing them to look older than they are. The sun can also cause large freckles called "age spots" and scaly growths.

Ranveer, Anushka are friends now?

If sources are to be believed, Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh and actress Anushka Sharma are no more at loggerheads with each other.

Anyway, the complicated status of their love-hate relationship has been the most interesting piece of gossip in Bollywood.
Anushka Sharam and Ranveer Singh
All’s well: Anushka Sharam and Ranveer Singh

The pair shared the screen in their debut movie Band Baaja Baaraat in 2010. Since then there were news of romance between the two. In the last three years the couple has come closer and separated a number of times.

Last time they separated, Anushka tried every bit to maintain a distance with Ranveer. At a Filmfare Awards Nomination event earlier this year, Anushka was seen avoiding Ranveer.

An onlooker said, "Anushka and Ranveer's cars arrived at the same time. As she realised her ex-boyfriend was there, she refused to exit her car. She only came out when Ranveer had finished his media bytes and entered the event arena."

The actress went to the extent of sending his man to check if Ranveer was seen around. Only when she got a confirmation that he was not around, she stepped out of her car.

According to a source, "Anushka maintained a safe distance from Ranveer throughout. Considering that Deepika Padukone, who has been linked to him lately, was also there she made sure there were no awkward bump-ins."

However, the scenario has changed and guess what? Their patch up has been initiated by actor Arjun Kapoor who is said to be dating Anushka.

At a special screening of the movie Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, organised by Karan Johar, actor Arjun Kapoor helped break the ice between Ranveer and Anushka. Arjun and Ranveer are doing a film together titled Gunday.

After an awkward silence from both the sides, few pleasantries were exchanged and they warmed up to each other. Ranveer is a ‘gym buddy’ of Arjun Kapoor. When asked about this, Arjun confirmed, "Yes, we do work out together but we don't throw dumbbells at each other!"

Well, great sense of humour Arjun!

An untold love story
Uday Chopra
project next: Uday Chopra

YRF Entertainment is set to produce a film based on Seducing Ingrid Bergman.

Uday Chopra and Grace of Monaco writer Arash Amel have come together again to produce the untold story of Ingrid Bergman, one of Hollywood's legendary names.

Seducing Ingrid Bergman, a novel by Chris Greenhalgh, dramatises the real-life affair between the actress Ingrid Bergman and the war photographer Robert Capa. Arash Amel will adapt and will produce with Uday Chopra, as they did together on the Olivier Dahan directed Grace of Monaco, a film being released later this year by The Weinstein Company.

Speaking about this, Uday said, "There are certain untold stories which on hearing, one realises that not only is it a very moving story of a woman but it also seems to deliver a message which goes deeper than the life of just one woman. It seems to talk about all women through her, creating in her an icon. Ingrid Bergman was just such an icon and her romance with Robert Capa, the legendary war photographer, is a story that needs to be told.

"I believe that Arash Amel, who also wrote Grace of Monaco, is the perfect writer to bring this story to life and I'm very excited to have YRF Entertainment bring it to the world."

In Seducing Ingrid Bergman, we have one of the greatest undiscovered love stories of the twentieth century. The epic, star-crossed romance of a real-life Casablanca between war photographer Robert Capa and screen legend Ingrid Bergman — two legendary figures whom destiny brought together but fate would try to keep apart, in a sweeping love affair from Paris to Hollywood during World War 2, the Cold War and Hollywood's darkest hour of the McCarthy witch-hunts.

The script is near completion and other details will soon be revealed as and when the director and cast are locked.

Far from perfect

Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha has said that she feels that she is far from the perfect. The actress feels that being perfect is boring and wants to continue to grow with every film.

Learning curve: Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi, who is known for the hit films like Rowdy Rathore and Dabangg, said at the music launch of her film Lootera: "I am far from perfect. I regard perfect as boring."

The film has been directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and stars Sonakshi and Ranveer Kapoor. "Vikramaditya Motwane has done a fantastic job of directing the film and brought out the correct emotions," she said.

The actress also added that when she was narrated the script, she could not think of anyone else who could do the part. "Usually I can picture other actresses when I am being narrated the script. Here I could only picture myself. I felt that the role was written for me. I knew that this would be the most challenging film for me," she said.

Talking about preparation for her role, the actress said that she never really prepares for her characters. "I don't really prepare for my roles. I can't act unless I am in front of the camera. My character goes through a lot of ups and downs and the best preparation was to talk to my director and understand the character," she said.

Sonakshi also added that director Vikramaditya Motwane was the best director she has worked with.

"I am here to admit that Vikram is the best director I have worked with so far," she said. — IANS

"My knees were shaking. I shared the tip with 15 of my colleagues," she added.

The 49-year-old ordered $1,000 worth of a menu including sushi, salad, yakitori chicken and soup for himself, Jolie and their six kids - Maddox, 11, Pax, nine, Zahara, eight, Shiloh, six, and four-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
