Lack of power, water supply fan residents’ anger
Tribune News Service

Jammu, June 6
It was protest of a different kind. Activists of the Dogra Front and Shiv Sena today protested with earthen pots, taps and hand fans in their hands. They accused the administration for failure to ensure uninterrupted power and drinking water supply.

Protestors, including women, led by Shiv Sena state president Ashok Gupta, assembled at the Parade Ground and took out a march which passed through Shalamar road before culminating at City Chowk.

The protestors raised anti-government slogans and accused the ruling parties of turning a blind eye towards the problems faced by the city residents.

They also lodged their resentment against the pending bills of ministers and bureaucrats running in crores and said they were getting special lines of electricity and water connections while the people who had been paying their bills regularly were being forced to face 8-12 hours power cuts in rural and city areas amid sizzling and sultry conditions.

“The government employees have been asked to get no-objection certificate from power development department and public health engineering department to get their salaries and on the contrary, ministers who have huge amount in pending as bills, are getting round the clock supply of electricity and water,” Gupta said.

He said the people were having sleepless nights due to power cuts during night hours and the problem had become perennial but the authorities have failed to mitigate the miseries of the people.

Gupta also lashed out at the government’s decision of increasing power tariff and said it was bereft of logic and rationale as the power department was yet to improve power supply position both in the urban and rural areas. “Every year during summer, residents of Jammu face the same problem, but nothing has been done to address their problems,” he alleged.
