Stress no more
Stress is all-pervasive in the highly competitive world of today. The idea is to beat it out of your system…
Mona

Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life…Chinese scholar Confucius gave this mantra centuries ago, but obstinate that we are, we all go to work each day. And earn apart from the salaries and perks, stress as part of the pay packet!

Workplace burnout is all-time high in industries across the globe and if you are feeling listless for a major part of your waking hours, well, you might be experiencing one. Well, the good news is that there is hope…we get you to meet different professionals and how they tackle this necessary evil at work.

Play on

‘Enjoy your work’ is the dictum they have picked up at CueBlocks as much as other things from Silicon Valley. The e-commerce agency started by the three youngsters Sarthak Aggarwal, Avneet Sethi and Pancham Prashar at Manimajra is modelled on Google headquarters. If the interiors here are minimal, they have a dedicated entertainment area with facilities for table-tennis, some books, Scrabble and more. An in-house chef prepares fresh meals for this team of forty-seven that represent five countries. If you have to opt for the one ultimate stress-buster here, you got to settle for the adorable Chatur and Carlos, two beagles that call CueBlocks their home!

“Here we have no fixed hours to use the entertainment area, many companies dole out such privileges only to pull them back. Here we have staff who work and play at their pace. We are proud that we all come here with a smile and leave with one.”

Soothing the senses

Due to the sheer nature of the hospitality industry stress is a given, but at Moksha Himalaya Spa Resort, they ensure a soothing working environment. Being at the top of the hill, pristine nature, close to the stars helps and so does proper training to tackle the challenges that might come on the way. Once every month is the party time for the employees as they get together to celebrate the birthdays in the month with cake, snacks and music. “We start with proper training and converse about work openly,” says Rajeev Verma, consultant training and administration at the resort.

Happy together

A government office canteen puts forth the picture of endless small glasses of tea in the company of a tray of samosas, but not anymore. Aaykar Bhavan – 17, Chandigarh, now boasts of its own plush café that serves, in addition to regular tea and usual food Rs 30 a plate, but also lattes, pasta, sandwiches and more! As envisaged by Garima Singh, additional commissioner, Income Tax Chandigarh, Café Mocha beats many a corporate places too.

Encouraged and supported by her seniors like Jaspal Singh, chief commissioner, Income Tax (northwest region), Garima Singh proudly says, “It is one-of-its- kind in a government set-up.” Prices are pocket-friendly. More than just food and drinks, it provides a happy place for employees to take a break.

High on life
Manpriya Singh

He’s long moved on from days of being in the news for all the wrong reasons and pins it down to simply, “being with the wrong people at the wrong time.” It was only a matter of overlooking a little and learning a lot. Spoilt brat, former Roadie, the news-maker, Ranjit Bajaj, neither denies nor declares and claims to have literally come a full circle.

Like all things else, making it to the Limca Book of Records 2013, “was never planned.”

“It feels great and especially because I never aimed for anything in return when I started out.” He adds, “I also made it to the India Book Of Records 2013, for the highest altitude swim by an Indian.”

Becoming the first Indian to swim in the Pumori Glacier Lake for 10 seconds, with temperatures falling down to minus 45 degrees Celsius, can get you a little high! Perhaps, as high as the 5,300 m that he performed the task at! He says, “We were wearing at least six to seven layers of clothing and the air was so thin. There was only 50 per cent or half the oxygen available to breathe…if you have a twisted ankle, nobody can bail you out, even if they want to. Once you are climbing up, you see a lot of frozen dead bodies around you because nobody’s been able to pick them up. It’s a scary sight.” Not to forget that the nearest medical facility is a three-day trek and no helicopter rescue is possible!

He adds, “Mountaineering is the biggest challenge known to mankind. The number of deaths is the highest.” Nevertheless, there’s no dissuading from the sport or the love for adventure. “I’d really like to make it to Mount Everest but that’s a lot of work, it takes you at least three to four years to only prepare…my next expedition is in October in Manali.”

The excitement for adventure goes way back. “The love for sports and adventure has always been there. I’m a certified scuba-diver, was a part of under-19 football team and played cricket too.” That’s where the extra-curricular activities come in. “I run my own cricket academy called Minerva Academy, where, now with the coming if IPL, there’s a scope of bringing in a lot of international players and making them interact with trainees.”

When we spell adventure, can the love for wildlife be far behind? “I run an NGO, which is dedicated to conserving wildlife. Apart from other things, we make sure that there are as many as 5,500 water tankers a year to fill the water holes and save these creatures.”

He adds, ‘I love snakes not just because of the fact that they are a farmer’s best friend but also because all other animals have people looking after them.”

The scandals and the cases appear like a fading memory now or at least the ones he’s trying hard to erase. “I credit my parents and my wife for the transformation.” Here’s a man who made mistakes and claims to have learnt from all of them!

the ‘in’ side
Out in the open
Sukhmani

Walk-in showers are elegant and functional. They give your bathroom a modern appeal and it will give you the possibility to efficiently use the space available. With open showers in bathrooms, the well designed and rich interiors of the shower area are no longer hidden and hence, they rightly jazz up the rest of the bathing space. If you are not worried about that 'privacy factor, then open showers can be the right option for your baths. These showers are often a preferred option when bathing for those with lessened mobility, such as elderly people or people on wheelchairs.

Most walk-in showers are constructed in a way that the bathing space looks very much a part of the bathroom, instead of being hidden or cut off. Such showers often have three walls with a wide open entrance which makes the entire shower space visible from any part of the bathroom. Best to add the shower panel over the background wall that is right opposite the shower entrance. The background wall over which the shower panel is fixed must be well designed to create an appealing effect.

Once you have worked on the layout and installed the minimal essential features, jazz up the space to make it look luxurious.

  • To start with, you can add some extra shower nozzles that will give you an enhanced showering experience.
  • Adding complementing decor pieces added to the entire space will further help farcify the bathing area.
  • Keep a colorful mat right under the shower. Select the bath mat in accordance with the rest of the bathroom décor.
  • Keep a few potted plants around the shower area, so as to separate it from the rest of the bathroom. Plants will surely lend an all together different visual appeal and aura to your bathroom.
  • To give the bathroom a spa like feel, you can add scented candles.
  • A grab rail can be added to add extra safety in the shower area.
  • See to it that the bathroom fittings and accessories that you use do not rust easily. As an open shower is much more likely to keep them wet than any other kind of shower design, invest in only high quality stuff for your bathroom.
  • Add a shower bench. Shower benches offer a space to sit and relax while taking a shower. This can be most useful while you are taking a shower after a tiring day.
  • Adding fancy led lighting inside the shower area is a great idea.

If you are thinking of renovating your bathroom, walk-in showers are the best bet as they are not only trendy, they are also easier to maintain.

Get physical
In your comfort zone
Vishal Thukral

The summer is here and so are the shorts, arm baring tops and the beachwear! It also means having to lose a few pounds to get into those trendy clothes. So, get ready with your own at-home boot-camp style workout. No requirement of a gym membership, fancy equipment or personal trainer.

This is what you have to do

The warm-up

Never forget to do the warm-up session for at least 5-7 minutes, which includes walking or slow jogging in place or riding a stationery bike.

The moves

Push-ups

Make sure your palms are flat and your hands are shoulder-width apart. Slowly lower your body to the floor, bending your elbows. Push back upward against the floor until your arms are fully extended. Repeat 12 to 20 times.

Cardiovascular exercise

After strength training push-up moves, do 20 to 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise. This could include from jumping rope to dancing to fast-paced music etc.

Jump rope

Start with short 30-60 second intervals until you can increase your endurance. Jumping rope intensely for 10 minutes has about the same calorie burn as jogging for 30 minutes.

Household work

Clean the house in record time. Heavy cleaning can elevate your heart rate to an aerobic level. Make as many trips up and down those stairs as you can, and try to rest as little as possible to stay in the aerobic zone.

Squats: Stand in front of a sturdy, armless chair. Place your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Extend your arms in front of you. Slowly bend your knees and lower yourself down until you're almost seated, taking care not to extend your knees past your toes. Slowly rise back to a standing position. If this move is too difficult, you can use your hands for help. Repeat 10 times.

Bridge: Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Contract your abs and glutes, exhale, and lift your hips off the floor. Inhale and lower down to starting position. Repeat 12 to 20 times.

The cool-down: The cool-down requires a less intense moves, such as walking around the room, then stretch the major muscle groups you've just worked. This process must include another five to 10 minutes.

The payoff: This type of workout may burn up to 250-500 calories an hour, and it also strengthens your muscles and improves your endurance, while having fun in the process. As with any fitness routine, check with your health care provider before beginning.

Eat right: Eating balanced foods shortly after a workout helps to replenish your energy stores and repair muscle tissue after the exercise. This may include a small bowl of low calorie mix fruit salad or a handful of nuts.

Lawn ranger
Satish Narula

In summer the foremost task for a gardener is water management, considering that there are restrictions on the supply. However, one thing that is also important is to prepare the soil for the lawn. But why should one carry this operation during the summer?

The lawn is the most important part of the garden. It is like a canvass on which the plants are dotted to give colour. If the lawn is not good, whole of the gardening charm is lost. Even when the judges come calling during the flower and garden competitions, their first consideration is the lawn.

A lawn shabbily maintained or the one with weeds kills the beauty of the house. In small home gardens where a lawn is laid in small area, the redoing is needed in at most three to four years. This is due to the repeated treading on the limited area making the area compact. The grass starts drying or yellowing.

While laying out a lawn, most of the time we hurry it up and finish the job within a day or two. It is easy to scrap, dig, level and do grassing in a day or two but it is as good as not done. Within no time the weeds appear and overpower the grass defying the purpose of re-laying. If you want to have a good lawn that lasts longer, you will have to show patience and follow a procedure.

In case you want to plant a new lawn you will have to add fresh soil that should be free from malba. The soil is evenly spread on the ground and deep digging is done to mix the soil added with the soil below. In case you want to do re-grassing in an old lawn, then the lawn is dug deep, say at least a foot deep, and then cleared of weeds and old grass. In both cases, after deep digging, it is advisable to give water at least once. This will encourage the growth of weeds that could be removed by repeated digging and weeding.

But why do we carry out this operation now? Summer months are most suitable to carry out such operation as when the soil is repeatedly exposed to the heat, most of the insects and obnoxious weed die.

This operation of repeated weeding and digging should be carried out for at least a month and a half at 10 to 15 days’ interval. In the last week of June, fertilizer like superphosphate should be added to insect repellent powder like follidol 2 per cent or gamma BHC to keep the white ants at bay. Never add manure to the soil or you will end up cleaning weeds for the rest of the time. After adding fertilizer etc, mix these well with the soil and level the ground giving it a natural and gentle slope. Wait for the first shower and if you find any water stagnation in the ground, make the level to correct the fault. After you are satisfied that the level is made, plant grass at four inches distance.

Jumping for joy

Come summer and while most people look forward to relax, rejuvenate and refill, there are some who need to escape, vent out and break free. Jumpin Heights, an extreme adventure zone in the mystic land of Rishikesh, caters to those that thrive on the high that only an adventure can give.

“Earlier, a lot of people would reach foreign shores just to undertake such activities, but now we try and give them the experience that subscribes to International standards and yet is affordable,” shares Brig SP Singh, the marketing director. He adds, “We’ve successfully completed three years and soon we are looking at expanding.”

As for Jumpin Heights, the place offers an array of extreme adventures like bungee jumping, flying fox and giant swing. Situated at Mohanchatti, a village 15km from the Lakshman Jhula, they claim to have executed all three activities with expertise of specialists from New Zealand.

Picture rubber chords tied to your ankles, while you feel the adrenaline rush. Before you experience the thrill of the jump, there’s some screening that everyone has to go through. He shares, “First criteria comprises the age. Only people from the age group of 12 to 45 are advised to try the sport. Moving on, they have to be within the range of 40 kg to 110 kg. Then there are a lot of medical requirements like no recent surgeries, no hypertension.”

He adds, “We first brief them about the sport and then make them sign a disclaimer form.” For those skeptical of security, there’s “internationally qualified crew and a team of dedicated Army veteran officers to implement the safety procedures.” What’s more? One can keep alive the experience forever by procuring merchandise with the logo and DVDs that capture your activities live. — Manpriya Singh

Two men in Kiran’s life

Kiran Rao is not someone who gives interviews all the time and she does not even talk a lot. The star wife and director opens up about her equation with Aamir Khan and their son Aazad.

Aamir worship

Aamir has a great sense of humour and no starry airs. He is knowledgeable and has a very different way of looking at things. We have the same value system and feel a big responsibility towards our community and have faith in the civil system. We are grounded people. Aamir is very easy to talk to and I connect with him. Aamir tends to get lost in his own world sometimes and his mind is always working which can be frustrating. He can go hours without talking and loves one-on-one company. I used to be very talkative earlier. Aamir has a passion for movies and storytelling and he has a gift to gauge which scripts and stories will do well because he always listens and judges from the point of view of an audience member.

Son-shine

I am so obsessed with Azaad that I do not know what I was doing before he came into our lives. I am not maternal as such but I wanted a child with Aamir. There was insecurity about the baby because there is no law on surrogacy in our country, only a bill. And people may sign contracts but may choose not to honour them. My angel through the surrogacy has been my doctor Feroza Parekh whom I met at Anil and Nita Ambani’s residence. She guided us through the entire process and she was monitoring the baby and mother regularly. For sometime, I was totally into Azaad but I am now learning to extricate myself from Azaad and get back into scripts and direction.

No comparison please!

Controversial Pakistani model turned actress Veena Malik, who came into limelight with her Bigg Boss stint, is making news quite often for her hot photo-shoots for movies. The actress, who has been tagged as bold and hot, finds those adjectives unjustified for her.

She said, “Why do people talk about me all the time? I have not done anything that others haven’t. Am I the only one to wear a bikini, or to kiss on screen or for that matter give a backless shot in my films? So many actresses, even A-listers, have done all this. Then why only I’m being targeted? I am really puzzled about this.”

On comparison with Sunny Leone, she said, “Well, it’s totally unfair to compare me with her. I am not a porn star. I have never given a frontal nude shot. People always misunderstand this. There is a difference between a backless scene and a frontal nude scene. I don`t understand why people compare me with her.”

Veena added, “I am targeted because I am from Pakistan. My recent comment on Sarabjit’s case led to bad comments by people on social networking sites. If there is peace between the two countries, I will be happier.”

Sanjay Gupta ko gussa kyun aata hai?

Sanjay Gupta Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta isn’t the one to take criticism kindly. It seems that the Shootout At Wadala director has taken the criticism to his chin. “Mere bachchon par koi aankh uthaayega toh cheer daalunga. Mere liye meri film mere bachchon se kam nahin,” he tweeted.

Nonetheless, he has reasons to rejoice as the film is doing well. Gupta also received a bike from actor John Abraham as a gift.

“I am now a very proud owner of The Yamaha V Max Motorcycle thanks to my hero John Abraham. Can’t wait to go on a really long ride on my new beauty. Thank you John. This is the best gift ever. The sweet bike of success :-),” he added.

Sanjay also announced the sequel to the film. “Just asking... My next should be Shootout 3 or something else. And then maybe come back to the Shootout franchise. I’m ready with both,” he updated.

The Reluctant Fundamentalist not about 9/11: Mira Nair

Indian-American director Mira Nair says her latest film The Reluctant Fundamentalist is not about 9/11 but a coming-of-age story of a young man struggling to find his identity in America post the terror attacks. The film, Mira says, is also her first attempt at a thriller. She is happy to finally bring the film to Indian audiences.

"The film is essentially not a 9/11 movie but a coming-of-age story of a young man who finds out who he really is in a polarising universe. I made the film because I lamented that post 9/11, there has been a real lack of conversation between America and the rest of the world. It is my attempt to create a bridge and dialogue between the two sides," Mira said.

The film stars British-Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed as Changez. Hollywood stars like Kate Hudson, Liev Schreiber and Kiefer Sutherland play key roles in the movie besides Indian actors —Shabana Azmi and Om Puri. Mira, 55, is happy to have brought together talent from different parts of the world to tell the story of her movie.

"I think a film like this has not been made before therefore not seen before. Also, there is no other film that has a brown person in the lead and supported by A-listers from both Bollywood and Hollywood. I have also introduced a lot of talent from Pakistan," the director said.

'The Reluctant Fundamentalist', based on Pakistani author Mohsin Hamid's book of the same name, is being released in India by PVR on May 17. It will also hit the screens in Pakistan on the same day. — PTI

It’s Rocking
Visual treat

Sunny Leone & John Abraham in the item number Laila
Sunny Leone & John Abraham in the item number Laila.

Sunny Leone takes the cake, the bakery and in fact the baker’s son when it comes to pulling off a Bollywood dance act. And she proved this right in the recent track, Laila that is featured as an item song in the movie, Shootout at Wadala. One has to admit, she made all the other ladies in the B-town look pale when it came to shaking a leg with John Abraham and Tushar Kapoor. The song that has been sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, Mika Singh and Anand Raaj Anand, is topping the Bollywood charts.

Desi tadka

I am a Bollywood fan and I really liked this item number. Considering that this is Sunny Leone’s first item number, I really think that she has done wonders with it. Firstly, she looks like a million bucks in the video and dolled up in a desi avatar. She makes the song look good.

Karan Arora, student

Rowdy feel

The song has a very rowdy and rustic touch to it. The lyrics and music complement each other and I like John and Sunny’s chemistry in the song. I think it has all the elements of being an instant hit with the masses. Meanwhile, I love the beats and the video of the song too.

Natasha Sharma, student

Theme matters

I have seen Shootout at Wadala and I think that the song goes with the theme of the movie. Sunny Leone qualifies to be a gangster’s girl and I think she looks very pretty in the song. Though the lyrics don’t quite make much sense to me, I’d rather just stick to the theme.

CHATTER BOX

Rumour mill bugs Sonarika

No replacement: Sonarika BhadoriaSonarika Bhadoria, who plays Parvati in the Life Ok show Mahadev, is miffed with reports that she will be replaced. Talking about the same, she expresses her surprise and shock. Read on.

It was reported that you would be replaced in the show, is it true?

That is a baseless rumour. I don’t know where it came from. I have been giving the show my best and some people who are hell-bent on creating trouble have spread this false news. I am not being replaced.

They blame it on your tantrums and unprofessional attitude…

My unit, production team and producers can vouch for me and my behaviour on the sets. When the news came they told me such a thing was reported. It was surprising and shocking. I read it and even clarified with them. We all laughed about it.

Do you feel your co-star Mohit Raina, who plays Lord Shiva, gets star treatment on the sets?

Mohit and I play Shiv and Parvati; the show Mahadev is about both of them. He has worked really hard to be where he is, the show has worked because of a collective effort and he deserves all the credit. I don’t have any problems with him.

But we haven’t seen much of Parvati off late…

The story and the tracks have to keep changing in a daily soap and currently the Jalandhar and Shiva story is working very well. While Parvati is working on regaining her memories, there’s an interesting track coming up.

What else are you doing?

I would love to do more, but there is hardly any time left post the shoot.

I’m thankful to Zee TV for once again taking me on board to rejoice in this dance mania. The auditions have seen some very good dancers and validated our belief that a platform was required to salute mothers who loved to dance. I am absolutely looking forward to the show and can’t wait to shake a leg again with my favourite people, Jay (Bhanushali), Marzi and Farah (Khan) and of course the amazing ‘mummy’ participants, who will showcase their dancing skills and make India proud! My grand salute goes to the family members of these courageous ladies who are the real strength behind each of them and have encouraged them to realise their passion. Salman KhanSallu’s new girlfriend

It seems Salman Khan has a girlfriend and she is blonde this time. We hear that Salman Khan has been dating Romanian television personality Iulia Vantur for about a year and the duo has now thrown caution to the wind and spotted at restaurants, cafes, and five-star hotels in Bandra, suburban Mumbai. We wonder where this will go.

Iulia VanturBig bash

Siddharth Roy Kapoor held a bash for the completion of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. It was attended by Ranbir Kapoor, Kalki, Aditya Roy Kapur, Ayan Mukerji and other cast and crew members. Deepika Padukone was missing as she was too busy shooting for other movies.

Interestingly, Katrina Kaif was present there for her ‘good friend” Ranbir.

Slowly making its way

Slowly Slowly from Go Goa Gone was actually composed by Sachin-Jigar for another movie but the director rejected it. Directors Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru included it in the movie and now it has become a big hit for them.
