MC can issue show-cause notices

The UT Estate Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner, in a communication to the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, has stated that the Municipal Corporation has now been empowered to issue show-cause notices for building violations and initiate resumption proceedings for the properties falling under its jurisdiction.

Send women cops for training: CAT

Acting on a petition filed by as many as 11 women constables, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) today issued orders that the constables be sent to Madhuban for the lower school training course as desired.

Residents move PCA against advocate
Chandigarh, May 8
A week after a girl filed a complaint of domestic violence against him in a court, advocate Arvind Thakur is in for more trouble as members of the United Welfare Association, Sector 44, have moved the Police Complaint Authority (PCA) against the advocate and his gunmen for misbehaving with former Mayor Harjinder Kaur and creating a ruckus in the area. The complaint has been filed against the SHO of the Sector 34 police station for his failure to take action against the advocate and not paying heed to the local residents' repeated complaints.

Incidence of TB in region alarming: Study
Chandigarh, May 8
A PGI study has revealed the incidence of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) in the Northern region is much higher than the WHO estimates. The study, which was published in the BMC infectious diseases journal in March this year, has found that the incidence of the MDRTB is 9 per cent among new patients compared to the WHO reported figures of 3 or 5 per cent. Cases of a total of 2,100 patients from across the region were studied.

Homoeopathy students boycott classes

Two arrested with poppy husk
Banur, May 8
The police today seized five kilograms of poppy husk from the possession of a truck driver at a checkpoint near SYL Canal on the Rajpura-Chandigarh Road. The truck from coming from Assam and was on its way to Ludhiana.

Firm’s directors booked for duping steel unit

The local police has booked directors of an Orissa-based firm, Surya Steel Iron Limited, for duping the owner of a local steel manufacturing unit of Rs 55.22 lakh.

Panchayat samiti elections: Four nominations rejected
Dera Bassi, May 8
After the scrutiny of nomination papers for the elections to 23 zones of panchayat samiti in Dera Bassi, nominations of 62 candidates have been accepted, while four were rejected. For the zila parishad poll in four zones here, nominations of 15 candidates were accepted and those of two were rejected. Returning officer-cum-SDM Inderjeet Kaur Kang said nomination papers of four candidates were rejected for the panchayat samiti poll because some discrepancies were found in their papers. The candidates whose nominations were rejected included Surjeet Kaur (CPI) from Nagla Zone, Jaswant Singh (Congress) from Kurli Zone, Bnarsidass (Independent) from Dheeremajra Zone and Dharmchand (Independent), also from the same zone.

Head cashier gets 8-year jail in another case
Chandigarh, May 8
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Nagpal today sentenced the head cashier of the UT Electricity Department, Mangat Ram, to eight years' rigorous imprisonment in a case of criminal breach of trust and corruption registered against him. He was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment in an embezzlement case yesterday.

Court papers snatched at gunpoint
Chandigarh, May 8
A Sector 36 resident alleged that his bag containing important court documents was snatched at gunpoint. Kamaljit Singh Walia claimed that the bag containing documents pertaining to a property dispute were snatched from him near the district courts in Sector 43. The 50-year-old victim said he was returning home from the Mohali District Courts in the evening when the incident took place.

Shivalik Public School to re-open volleyball academy

The volleyball academy of Shivalik Public School, Mohali, will be re-opening after its closure in 2005, here. Announcing the opening of the academy, DS Bedi, director, of the school along with a selection panel, comprising former International player Arjuna Awardee, Amir Singh, and Vijaypal Singh, general secretary, of the Chandigarh Volleyball Association, has selected 12 players to train under this academy.
