UT Home Secy, IGP get contempt notice
Allegedly defied CAT orders on sending constables for training course

Chandigarh, April 16
The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) today issued a contempt notice to UT Home Secretary Anil Kumar and Inspector General of Police RP Upadhyaya for defying the orders of the tribunal dated July 31, 2012. The petition has been filed by 11 women constables of the UT police, who have not been sent for the lower school training course at Madhuban, the last date of reporting for which is April 18.

Doon MLA’s bail plea rejected
Panchkula, April 16
Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary suffered a major jolt today when his bail plea was rejected by a court here. Chaudhary had applied for bail on the grounds that the documents in the chargesheet filed by the Panchkula police were incomplete and some of these were even missing.

Close shave for PU students
Chandigarh, April 16
The Honda Civic car that met with an accident on the PU campus on Tuesday. Reckless driving by two PU students, who were in separate vehicles, led to a major accident on the Panjab University campus in which one of the vehicles landed in a pond opposite the administrative block. Both students were reportedly racing on the main road of the campus towards the university market.

City sees 50% rise in gold sales in 2 days
Chandigarh, April 16
People buy gold at a shop in Secor 22, Chandigarh, on Tuesday. With a record fall in the prices of gold since July 2011, city residents were seen rushing to jewellery stores, brining the daily sales up by 50 per cent in the past two days. As the prices of gold slid by Rs 1,250 within a day, with Cyprus offloading its gold reserves, residents have been making the most of the opportunity to invest in gold, according to jewellers in the city.

Dr Atul Sachdev Dr Sachdev is GMCH Director
Chandigarh, April 16
In a significant development, Dr Atul Sachdev, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, has been selected as the Director-Principal of the institute. Confirming the development today, UT Home Secretary Anil Kumar said: “The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has recommended us to appoint Dr Atul Sachdev as the Director. We will issue the appointment letter in a day or two.”

Cops show scant regard for Mansa Devi temple sanctity

The ban on smoking in a public place was made a mockery of by none other than the enforcers of the law. Policemen were found smoking "beedis" at a sacred place like the Mansa Devi temple during their duty hours.

Chandigarh councillor initiates noble cause
Chandigarh, April 16
While the UT Administration is yet to give any compensation to the family of 33-year-old Harpreet Singh Sodhi, who died in a road accident involving stray cattle, a councillor today initiated a noble cause by announcing that he would give his one-month salary to the family. The councillor, Mukesh Bassi has also requested to all the 36 councillors (elected and nominated) to contribute to the noble cause.

Air passengers harassed
Chandigarh, April 16
Around 200 passengers of Chandigarh-Srinagar SpiceJet flight had a harrowing experience at the Chandigarh Airport today where they had been stranded for more than two hours. The passengers of the SG 151 flight, after the delay of half an hour against the schedule time of 1:10 pm, were asked to vacate the aircraft, which had developed some technical fault and was unable to take off. All the passengers were asked to get their boarding passes reissued from the airlines authorities.

The whistle blower in the sector 41 market booth scam, Dinesh Sood, has alleged that despite his repeated representations, the Estate Office has failed to issue him the copies of the reports of inquiries conducted by PS Shergill and a three-member probe committee, which submitted its action taken report to the UT Adviser.

Revised policy for senior citizens soon: Selja
Chandigarh, April 16
Union Minister Kumari Selja, Daljit Singh Grewal, CSCA chief, and Madhu Bansal, Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal’s wife, at a function in Chandigarh on Tuesday. The Central Government has drafted a revised senior citizens policy, which is under consideration and will be approved by the Centre soon. This was stated by Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Kumari Selja on the occasion of the 17th foundation day of the Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association (CSCA) and the launch of a unique project, ‘Kalpana’. The project will especially benefit the girls of the weaker sections of society.

Commuters were a harassed lot when around 2,000 members of the Sarv Karamchari Sangh blocked traffic on the main Panchkula-Chandigarh route for about three hours to press for the fulfilment of their demands.

80 violators challaned in two days 
Chandigarh, April 16 Continuing their drive against the misuse of water, the teams of the Municipal Corporation today issued as many as 35 challans to violators. In the last two days, the MC has issued 80 challans in all to the violators, who were found wasting drinking water by washing cars and watering lawns.

NIPER students continue protest

Panel recommends re-exam for BCom-II students
Chandigarh, April 16
More than 4,000 students of BCom-II at PU-affiliated colleges in Chandigarh and Punjab might have to appear again for the cost accounting examination as the referral committee of experts, which was constituted by Panjab University to look into the complaint made by students regarding the goof-up in the question paper, has recommended to the examination branch that the exam should be conducted again.

2 held for abducting girl

A day after a jilted lover, along with his two friends, abducted a girl in a car and later abandoned her, the police today arrested two of the accused. Mohali-based Harkamalpreet Singh, who is married, and 19-year-old Naveen Kapoor have been arrested.

The IPL match between Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders at the PCA Stadium in Mohali was unable to pull the crowds during the start. But by the evening the stands were filled to capacity as the match headed towards a thrilling end.
After two back-to-back defeats, finally Kings XI managed to secure a thrilling win. The strength of crowd was quite lesser as compared to the previous encounters.

Duty comes first for these fasting policewomen

Constables inspect a woman at the entry point of the PCA Stadium on Tuesday. The women police personnel deployed outside the PCA stadium were seen performing their duty with utmost sincerity despite that fact they were observing Navratra fast. "Duty comes first and after àll were here to do our job. We are happy to perform our duty and hardly feel hungry while doing it. We are having fruits and navratra's special food in between", Ayisha Rani, said female constable.

St Stephen's girl shines in carrom
Chandigarh, April 16
Tuba of St Stephen's School won the Girls' Junior Singles Final in the 41st Junior National and Inter-State Carrom Championship held at Varanasi (UP). Mohd Talib, who is also a student of St. Stephen's School, stood runners-up for the consecutive second year in the Boys' Junior Singles.
