Parents protest against fee hike

Ambala, April 16
The parents of the students of Saint Paul School, Ambala City, protested against the hike in tuition fee and other funds. They raised slogans against the school administration and alleged that the school was violating the CBSE norms.

The guardians Tarun Gupta, Gurmukh Singh, Sanjay Kumar, Navneet Kumar, Sunaina, Anita and Reena said that when they met the school management in this regard they were not heard properly. They further said that no proper arrangement for drinking water was made in the school and the school had been charging a huge amount in the name of annual fee.

They also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner in this regard. It is learnt that Deputy Commissioner has referred the matter to ADC, Ambala, who has summoned a meeting of school management and the guardians on April 22.

Meanwhile the guardians of another school, Saint Joseph Public School, had also protested against the fee hike but the matter was resolved after the intervention of Deputy Commissioner and Education Department.

Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery

In an incident of theft , the thieves decamped with cash and gold jewellery. The miscreants committed the crime in the wee hours at 8:30am today , when Dharmparkash a resident of Shiv Colony , Pinjore had gone out to drop his children to school. 

When he returned after half an hour, he found, the thieves had stolen a gold chain, key rings, two mobile phones and cash Rs 4,000 by breaking open the Almirah. The police had registered a case and was investigating the matter.

Students get tips on MBA entrance test

Dr Amar Inder Singh, associate professor at School of Management Studies, Punjabi University, delivered two lectures on "various job options after MBA" and "how to prepare for MBA entrance test" under the aegis of Career and Counselling Cell of Government Mohindra College, Patiala.

These lecturers were organised to aware the students about the various career options available to them after MBA and also to help them prepare for CAT/MAT tests. Dr Sangeeta Handa, convener, Career Counselling Cell, introduced the guest speaker to the students. The college principal, Dr Sukhbir Singh Thind presided over the function.

2 held for abducting girl

A day after a jilted lover, along with his two friends, abducted a girl in a car and later abandoned her, the police today arrested two of the accused. Mohali-based Harkamalpreet Singh, who is married, and 19-year-old Naveen Kapoor have been arrested.

The accused yesterday abducted the girl, who was staying as a paying guest in Sector 21 and later abandoned her at some distance. They slapped and molesting her in their Swift car.

The police had received a call last night from the girl.

The police said Harkamalpreet Singh, alias Banni, had called up the 21-year-old girl in the evening but she didn't pick up the phone. They had known to each other for the past few months. Later, the girl had stopped talking to the him following a rift between them. Harkamalpreet insisted the girl talked to him but she refused. He, accompanied by his two friends, called her, but as she refused to go with him. Harkamalpreet forcibly pushed her into the car while she was going to a market.

A passerby noticed the girl shouting and called up the police control room for help. The caller also followed the car. The girl alleged that the accused slapped and threatened her while his friend was driving the car. The girl also cried for help. She claimed the boy dumped her in a residential area of Sector 21 B after 15 minutes as they feared being followed.

Couple presented in court

Mohali, April 16
A couple arrested by the police on the charge of supplying heroin to a 'drug den' in Phase III-A was presented in the Kharar court today. The man was remanded in police custody for two days and his wife was remanded in judicial custody.

The CIA staff had seized 400 grams of heroin and Rs 4 lakh from Dalip Singh and 100 grams of drug from Jaswinder Kaur.

The police said the two were staying in a rented accommodation in Khanna and were allegedly coming to Mohali to supply heroin when they were arrested at the Balongi Bus Stand.

The police had registered a case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act against them.

Earlier, the police had arrested three persons from a house in Phase III-A and seized 30 grams of heroin from their possession on April 13.

They were identified as Harjit Singh, Tejinder Singh and Inderpal Singh. Seven other persons were also arrested from the house on the charge of taking drugs.

2 girls kidnapped from Mohali

Mohali, April 16
The police has booked unidentified persons for allegedly kidnapping two girls, including a minor, with the intention of compelling the girls to marry them.

A resident of Ballomajra village complained to the Balongi police that some persons had kidnapped his minor daughter and 20-year-old niece on the pretext of marrying them.

He said his two daughters and niece were sleeping in a room. When his wife went to their room to wake them up around 5 am, she found the minor daughter and the niece missing.

Members of the family tried to look for the girls all over, but failed to trace them. The father suspected that certain youths had kidnapped the two girls. The police has registered a case under Sections 363 and 366 A, IPC, in this regard. — OC

Mohali IPL tie fails to attract crowd

The IPL match between Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders at the PCA Stadium in Mohali was unable to pull the crowds during the start. But by the evening the stands were filled to capacity as the match headed towards a thrilling end.

After two back-to-back defeats, finally Kings XI managed to secure a thrilling win. The strength of crowd was quite lesser as compared to the previous encounters.

It was still a high voltage affair between the two teams but it was the home side that held the nerves and ended the winning draught.

From Manpreet Gony's debut to Sunil Narine's Hat-trick, It all happened this afternoon. "The crowd may be lesser but the spirit of our teams is same as before. We are here to enjoy the game not to measure the audiences.

I think, back-to-back defeats effected the interest of the audience. But our team played well and we enjoyed the game", said a group of youngsters, at the terrace block. On other hand, the match started at 4 pm which remained the other reason for the low turnout, as compare to last clash. "We just came to enjoy the match. I am not even aware of player's name but just entered the stadium to spend an evening with my family", said Nidhi Sharma.

Local boy cheers the crowd

After Manan Vohra it was Manpreet Gony, who made his presence felt, against the Kolkata Knight Riders today evening. The player who was bought at a whopping price of $5,00,000 by the kings XI Punjab team was finally given a chance in the playing squad, after three matches.

Justifying his place, he played an all-rounder innings and made a quick fire 42 off 18 balls studded with 4 boundaries and 3 sixes . He also claimed the important wicket of Gautam Gambhir and returned the figures of 18 for 1 in his four overs spell with an economy rate of 4.50.

He was adjudged as man of the match. "He was the entertainer of the evening; He saved the home team with his precious contribution, with both bat and ball. His blasting shots helped the team in achieving a respectable total", said Amit Kumar, a fan.

"This is my first season with Kings XI Punjab and I am happy to do well and helped my team in winning such an important match", said Manpreet Goni.

Juhi Chawla in town

Like last year, everyone was expecting that Shah Rukh Khan would mark his presence at the PCA Stadium to cheer his team. But it was Juhi Chawla, his business partner, who came up to cheer the Kolkata Knight Riders. The see-saw moments in the match witnessed both Preity

Zinta, co-owner of Kings XI Punjab and Juhi Chawla of co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, in different moods. Preity completed her signature run, after the first innings, while Juhi opted to sit at the pavilion.

Navratra Fast
Duty comes first for these fasting policewomen

The women police personnel deployed outside the PCA stadium were seen performing their duty with utmost sincerity despite that fact they were observing Navratra fast. "Duty comes first and after àll were here to do our job. We are happy to perform our duty and hardly feel hungry while doing it. We are having fruits and navratra's special food in between", Ayisha Rani, said female constable. While her counterpart, Harmanpreet Juneja added, "It is for the first time that I am observing these fasts and to be honest I am not facing any problems in doing my duties even while being on fast."

There were a total of 100 female police personnel, deployed across the stadium at various checking points of entry-gates. "Its all about balancing everything. We get appropriate support from our seniors and subordinates in performing our duty", said Aman a women constable.

St Stephen's girl shines in carrom

Tuba of St Stephen's School won the Girls' Junior Singles Final in the 41st Junior National and Inter-State Carrom Championship held at Varanasi (UP). Mohd Talib, who is also a student of St. Stephen's School, stood runners-up for the consecutive second year in the Boys' Junior Singles.

The Chandigarh boys and girls team secured the third place in theBoys' and Girls' Team Championship.

Amongst Boys Mohd Talib and Mohd Hassan secured the second and fourth National Rank while Tuba, Manu Gupta and Priya Sharma secured first, fourth and seventh National Rank amongst girls. In the Girls' Junior Singles Final Tuba outclassed Neelam (Maharashtra) in two straight games, while she defeated Kajal (Bihar) in the semifinals and A Aishwarya (Tamil Nadu) in the quarterfinals. Mohd Talib lost to Shibu of Jharkhand in the final of the boys singles while in the semifinal he defeated Mohd Hassan, his team mate from Chandigarh.
