Beyond the comic
An action drama makes a foray into Punjabi cinema with Bikkar Bai Senti Mental, which hits the screens on April 19. Preeti Jhangiani and Jassi Jasraj, the lead pair, talk about this 'different film' that they have to offer.
Pretty in pink After Sajna ve Sajna, this is Preeti's second outing in Punjabi cinema and so much better. "The young cast and crew is putting in best of efforts and the market is huge today," says Preeti, who gained and lost close to ten kilos for the role. Playing a mother came easy; she relates well to the role as she is also the mother of a two-year-old. However, the role is way different than her real self. "Jeeti lashes out on things that she feels strongly about and is very different than what I am." Weight gain had been easy, she just banked on paranthas; losing was a bit tough for she had to toil hours in the gym and zip up her mouth, but most challenging was staying away from her son for shooting. "Bikkar Bai Senti Mental has a pan-India appeal. In times when we have to fight for every right - be it child's admission or more - each one of us would be able to relate to it." Singer to actor Jassi Jasraj is another singer-turned-hero and this one is a 'he man' with a pava (bed's leg). Power packed dialogues called Bikkar bani, action sequences and this Jassi is ready to roll in another role. "I will always write and sing and if by God's grace the audience accepts me as an actor, I will do more films." He is thankful to the producer for giving him a chance and hopeful that though comedy rules Punjabi screens, his film will also strike a chord with the people. "Audiences have shown 110 per cent support for our film, and I am glad for it's our state as well as our language that is gaining in prestige, not to mention so many employment opportunities it has generated." A dedicated team The film produced by Sandeep Bansal and Kamaljit Kaur, has Rana Ranbir, Shahbaz Khan, Sardar Sohi, Kanwalpreet and Bobby Sandhu in the cast. "When I got the story, I knew that I had to make a film," says Sandeep. Bobby Sandhu, who has acted as well been part of script and dialogue writing, says, "We have worked on each and every dialogue of the film and tried to give a flawless narration that's rich in metaphors and symbols." The team is passionate about the film and sing in unison about the dedication of Kamaljit Kaur who as a producer was always on the sets, sometimes even for eighteen hours at a stretch. "When producers show faith in you, you have to give your very best," says Jassi Jasraj. mona@tribunemail.com

Sibling revelry
It's one of the most popular shows on television and the protagonists are not scheming, manipulating, pan-caked bunch of characters in designer dresses but doting kids. In fact, it's more of camaraderie than melodrama that makes Veeran-Ek Veer Ki Ardas a bit different from other primetime daily soaps on television. While most shows make their moolah playing around with romantic angles and kitchen politics, this show has a sweet story of a brother and sister, looking out for each other in the thick and thin of life. In Amritsar, the star cast, including the child actors Bhavesh and Harshita who play Ranvijay and Veeran on the show, respectively, along with actors Sneha Wagh and Kapil Nirmal visited the Golden Temple. The cast, which was there to shoot for some sequences in the current storyline as well as promote the show, interacted with the media and fans and even got mobbed, especially the two kids. The team has a shooting schedule lined up in holy city as the show is currently based on Amritsar. "We shot at the Golden Temple, which was an amazing experience as we also got to do langar seva and serve the visitors. Then we had a blast eating out at the famous dhabas and interacted with the fans. It's a very lively city and since our show is based in Punjab, we enjoyed every aspect of being a Punjabi, both on and off screen," says Sneha. The senior actors maintained their composure and the child actors had a little fun while shooting - whether it was impromptu lassi drinking competition between the two kiddies or playing various fun games. The show has touched many hearts and made the audiences cry as well as laugh on the unconditional love of Ranveer and Veera on screen. The show has been praised for being different, the sensitive portrayal of a brother-sister relationship and its child actors. Producer Yash Patnaik says, "The show had started with a new concept in mind and we have maintained the story line till date. About the show's Amritsar connection, he says the holy city always had a special part to play in the story. "Golden Temple is an iconic religious place for Sikhs. Earlier it has been shown in the show that Ranvijay always visits the gurdwara for his Ardaas." Talking about the experience of shooting there and managing the crowd, Yash shares, "The people were very co-operative. It has been an amazing experience for the entire team to shoot in Amritsar. People are very organised and disciplined inside the Golden Temple. They supported us." neha@tribunemail.com

Enchanting moves
"When you manoeuvre a slow dance form, you have to keep the audience interested," begins Methil Devika, a mohiniyattam dancer, who hails from Palakkad district of Kerala, as she sips on a cup of masala chai at the low-lying sitting area outside Class 9 at St Stephens School, Chandigarh. The intensity of her bucolic South-Indian features and her poised disposition make the interaction all the more heartening.
Nevertheless, she continues to describe the intrinsic characteristics of mohiniyattam as she continues, "Mohiniyattam is the dance of the enchantress and the most peculiar aspect of this form is that it is a solo act, essentially performed by the women. Also, the methodological content of this dance traces its roots in the mythological connect when Lord Vishnu donned Mohini's avatar. It therefore leaves much creative space for improvisation as the artist creates an illusion while she transforms into various characters during the solo act." She adds, "There is always an element of Natyadhari, the stylised dance and the Lokyadhari, the element of realism, which intertwines to define the character of each dance form. Mohiniyattam has a rather generous ratio of Natyadhari element." On why she chose the lesser known dance form, Devika shares, "I chose this dance form because it is not that popular and contributing to the fact that it is so powerful, it needs to be explored in relation to the taals and the heavy lineage of various symbols, including tantrik symbols, which are used to execute this dance form. During my thesis, I have studied the symbols, their orientation and origin." Devika started learning dance at the age of seven and she is adept at Kuchipudi as well. However, among various dance festivals where she has performed so far, there is one that Devika cherished the most, "I loved performing at the Madras Music and dance festival where my work was much-appreciated. I think that it is an artist's responsibility to educate and inform the masses through one's art but unfortunately, pure dance forms have lost their sheen due to the fusion. Therefore, artists these days should shoulder the concerns of preserving the authenticity of dance forms." Devika has performed across the globe and the only difference that she finds in the audience there while pitching it along the close proximity of Indian masses is their perspective and methodology, "I am a research scholar and among various books that I have read about this art form have been authored by people from the West. I think that they are more particular about the methodology of art as compared to us Indians." amarjot@tribunemail.com

Zara haat ke
Have you ever wondered what happens when the natural and rustic is married to innovation amidst a million social concerns? Explore the horizons of the urban-rustic charms of different regions across the country and the sub-continent as the Dastkari Haat Craft Bazaar at Kisan Bhawan launches its first ever exhibition in Chandigarh.
The variety at the venue holds the capacity to beautify your house while giving it a natural appearance. The idea behind organising this exhibition in the city is to cultivate a group of potential handicraft buyers, who would advocate for the authentic and ethnic beauty of local crafts. The motive behind organising this exhibition is to capacitate the local craftsmen and women with financial independence that could go a long way in uplifting them. Among various stalls at the exhibition, the stalls for silver filigree works from Odhisa, textile from Rajasthan, tussar silk from Kolkata and handicraft from the Kutch pull a number of visitors. Meanwhile, the woollen and cotton carpets, starting at Rs 3,500 at the stalls of Mirzapur, and natural grass organic mats of West Bengal within the range of Rs 350 to 650 are a relief from the mundane. A special stall from Delhi that offers a huge range of station clocks, neem-wood combs, telescopes, brass key rings and Gandhi pocket watches is a huge draw. The wall clocks start from Rs 600 and the table clocks are available at Rs 400. The key chains are available at Rs 150. The textiles and fabrics from Rajasthan in block print can be availed in different products, including suits, dupattas, bedsheets, cushion covers and sarees. These can be availed within the range of Rs 150 for cushions and Rs 900 to 600 for dupattas. While the sarees at the Madhya Pradesh stall are available within the range of Rs 900 to 2100, the ones in bandhini and tie-and-dye are available within the range of Rs 800 to 2000 at the Disha Shekhavati stall. Also, the purely organic tusser silk stall at the exhibition offers a wide range of suits and dupattas that are available within the range of Rs 1,400 to 6,000. If you are the kind who fancy junk jewellery, then head out and cut through the jostling crowd at the Jaipuri Jewellry stalls where you can purchase an abundant variety of earrings, necklaces, anklets and bajubands starting at Rs 50. The Madhubani paintings, Rajasthani sling bags in red and brown leather and Kapra Kabi ceramic show pieces at the Mumbai stall make for an enticing exhibition, while proffering it with the traditional craft that is beautified with improvisation that will surely suit your tastes. Besides, the prices can be negotiated too! On till March 8

Call of the Oz
If it’s not budgeted, target it as value for money. An Australian holiday, just a case to point. “Our biggest rival, I’d say is Europe and whereas we offer so much more than any of European countries, for example, sunshine, English speaking population and tropical climate,” shares Paramjit Bawa, country manager, India, Destination NSW, “We target all travelers into four segments namely, leisure, business, visiting friends and relatives and students,” he shares, while in the city to take a seminar at Ekido Holiday.
There are a couple of statistics that speak volumes. He questions, “Did you know that there are as many as 1,100 Indian restaurants in just Sydney itself?” The ones that serve from the great Indian dhaba food to fine dining options. As for the typical tourist things, options galore. Nods, Kapil Malhotra, director, Ekido Holiday, “When it comes to offbeat destinations in Australia, we target the second time travelers who to explore.”

Yet to be totally functional, you will see major brands by the month-end and Hyatt will open 213 keys hotel by the year-end in all likelihood! British Council will be here too from May and many other embassies are in talk for space. Bowling Alley will be here too as would be a gaming section for kids. Why Chandigarh for Elante? Shrikant Joshi, chief executive of L&T Realty, answers, “People here have money to splurge and no proper retail so far.” Elante has opened up to a warm response, people walking out in with shopping bags in hand though it’s only a few stores that are functional. “It’s heartening to see that brands have outdone themselves to be part of Elante,” adds Joshi. Safety and comfort have been kept in mind while designing Elante by Woodhead, ace architectural firm from Australia. Says Awadh Vashishta, COO, Elante, “We have women guards on duty to make the fairer sex comfortable. They are our prime clientele for we know men will follow them too.” Elante would soon be shopper’s paradise as promised players open their doors. Well, just wait and watch.

Creative journey
Vishal Bhardwaj's production Ek Thi Daayan releases later this month. He talks about movies, scripts and more.
Sense & sensibilities I only work with producers I share some sensibilities with. I have turned down producers with whom I felt no connection or matching wavelength. Nobody has the power to curb my creativity. I would rather not make a film then. Dealing with failure I failed when I composed music, so I try to not repeat those mistakes. The script is the beast and all my life, I feel threatened by this beast. If a film fails, then you are back to square one. I get scared while writing, not while directing. On retrospect I hated the make-up they used on Priyanka Chopra's older characters in 7 Khoon Maaf. People took the black and intense humour of the film very seriously. That is why people did not like the movie. As for Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, I knew I was on a mad trip and I made the movie just because I wanted to and I liked it. I followed Javed Akhtar's advice. I know I cannot please everyone. Like Maqbool was liked by so many but Naseeruddin Shah hated it.

Common people, uncommon stories
Who says filmmakers do not give a chance to aspiring actors? Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap have cast common people in their latest ventures. For his segment in the soon-to-be released Bombay Talkies, Karan has cast the daughter of an office peon at Yash Raj.
It so happened that in one of his many visits to the studio, the noted filmmaker who heads Dharma Productions, came to know that the daughter of a certain peon nurtured the dreams of acting in a film. She had already requested her father to put in a word to Johar, even if it was in a blink-and-miss role. An insider informed, "Having wanted to see herself on the big screen, she had told everybody in her home town that her dad works for Yash Raj and her friends often asked her if she would ever be seen in a film. The peon managed to put in a word with Aditya Chopra, who in turn put in a word with Karan Johar to help her out." And what a coincidence, Johar, who needed a girl next-door for one of the pivotal roles in his movie, decided to audition her. She got selected for the role. However, no one of in Dharma Productions is willing to divulge the name of the actor before the film's release. That's not all. Anurag Kashyap, on the other hand, has cast Amitabh Bachchan's gatekeeper in his segment in the same film. Another source informs, "Anurag's story revolves around a guy who wants to meet Amitabh Bachchan, as he's a big fan of the star. He lands up outside Bachchan's house every day to try and catch a glimpse of the star. And while trying to get closer to the house, the guard at the gate and the fan manage to interact. But Anurag did not want a professional actor to do this role. So he spoke to Bachchan and sought his permission to let him cast his real security guard in the film. Bachchan agreed, and as a result, the guard will now make his acting debut." Bombay Talkies is an Indian anthology film consisting of four short films directed by Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar and Dibakar Banerjee to celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema.

Shahid Kapoor and Ileana D'cruz:
The good-looking duo will be seen together in Phata Poster Nikla Hero, a commercial masala film directed by Rajkumar

Information is the antidote
Simmi Waraich
How can I talk to my child about drugs? Is it useful to talk to them? Yes, definitely having information on something is better than no information. Teenagers learn about drugs in many ways, TV, movies and magazines. They may have seen people they know using drugs such as alcohol, tobacco and prescribed medicines. Telling kids about drugs helps as they learn the importance of a healthy lifestyle while they develop and practice skills that will help them stay safe. What should chuildren be told and when? From grade 7 to 10th, it is useful to have discussions with schoolchildren about alcohol and illegal drugs. Even in primary school, there are guidelines on how to talk to children about drugs. It helps to consolidate and extend what they have learnt in primary school about legal drugs, including tobacco and alcohol. Some issues discussed are passive smoking and consequences of alcohol use. Children should learn that drugs such as marijuana may be harmful in many ways, including affecting concentration, causing depression and is not a purely recreational drug as many believe. It helps them to get rid of misconceptions that it is okay to have hashish (marijuana or pot) once in a while. Talk about how drug use can affect a person, their family and friends. For example, how to say no if they are offered a cigarette or how to avoid getting in a car with a driver who is affected by alcohol or other drugs helps them to practice ways to respond to an emergency situation involving themselves or someone else. Also discuss the laws relating to legal and illegal drugs, including the laws about driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs. Peer pressure is important in children–just as there are many singers and actors who use drugs, there are those that do not-talking about them can be useful. Discussing such issues makes children more aware. My boyfriend is rude to me and does not talk to me much. Even when I call him he says he is busy. I try to avoid calling him but after some time I do that again. My friends tell me I should leave him. I have got into a lot of trouble because of him. please advise me. Often people may treat us badly because we are more dependent on them than they are on us. So, first make yourself independent— identify your priorities. Write down a plan of what you want to do—your studies, what you want to be in life. Then write — why is he important to you? Is he giving you emotional support when you need it? When you are with him, does he make you feel good about yourself- does he help you to decide what you want to do in life? If he does not and instead only puts you down or is rude to you, then have a talk with him. Tell him he needs to treat you with respect and see his reaction. If he continues to be the same, for a week note down in writing his responses to you when you call him. If those are largely negative, you need to say a goodbye to this relationship. Switch off your phone, give it to a friend and ask your friends to help you out. Analyse why you find it difficult to break away—how is your relationship with your parents and friends? Work on that. Life is what you make of it, not what your boyfriend makes of it. (Waraich is a Chandigarh-based psycho therapist) |

Gala affair
Jay Bhanushali threw a party to celebrate his wife Mahhi Vij's birthday as well as their recent win in Nach Baliye. The party with a theme of 'bling' saw many from the television industry, including most of the Nach Baliye couples, get together and have fun. Actors present at the party included Gautam Rode, Roshni Chopra, Ankita Lokhande, Krystal Dsouza, Mouli Ganguly, Smita Bansal, Ravid Dubey, Karan Mehra and Nisha, Kushal Tandon, Rahul and Dimpy Mahajan, Gurmeet-Debina, Bhaktiyaar-Tanaz, Shaleen-Daljit, among others. Mahhi was seen cutting a 3-D doll cake with hubby Jay Bhanushali by her side along with her parents. Conversations at the party swung from Roshni Chopra talking about her son Jai to Gautam Rode speaking about coming right from the sets of Saraswatichandra. Actors from the television fraternity were seen dancing and having a gala time till the wee hours.
Negatively positive! Why did you take up Dastaan? Very few times in life you get characters that have depth. So when Mittali Bhattacharya, producer of Dastaan, offered me this role I knew I had to do it. The role would carry on for long, so I knew I had much to do in the show. Have you taken a fancy for negative roles? Well, negative roles perhaps have something more. I like challenges and don't want to get fed up doing similar roles. So, just like I took Uttaran, I took on this role. Are you enjoying these roles? It is all about the characters. I even did comedy Zindagi Kahe … Smile Please in between, but the show didn't work. So timing is also essential as is the plot, character as well as the story of the show. We didn't see you on television for a while. Why? I have been offered many shows, but I didn't take them on as nothing engaged me. Today producers want to play safe so that they can make money and get decent TRPs. When I get a role that has some value in the show, I take it up. You must have been offered roles like Om? Yes. Many offers like Om's character came by, but I didn't want to repeat myself.
A night to remember The crazy duo will make everyone roll on the floor with their quick wit and funny antics. There will be performances by some of the biggest names—Bollywood diva Priyanka Chopra on the journey of Indian music from its evolution till now, the gorgeous Anushka Sharma on a Bollywood mash-up, AR Rahman will enchant everyone with his vocals and music, the Punjabi cool dude Yo Yo Honey Singh will rock the stage with his biggest hits, among a host of other things. Farhan Akhtar, Vishal Dadlani, Sonu Kakkar and Clinton Cerejo's vocals will add to the celebrations. The biggest surprise of the evening will be a 'never-seen-before' collaboration between international hip-hop superstar T Pain and bhangra sensation RDB. It sure can't get better than this! There will also be a felicitation ceremony for musicians across 17 diverse award categories right from Bollywood to regional to international. Don't forget to catch the first-ever MTV VMAI as it goes on air on April 7.
A grand bidaai This will be an overwhelming experience for Anandi. Furthermore, Jagya (Shashank Vyas) and Ganga (Sriti Jha) will also dance for her. Sanchi will join the duo to grab Jagya's attention. The bidaai sequence is set to be a grand affair and it will be shot over four days.
Sheikh on telly Buzz is that Farooque Sheikh is in talks with producer Saurabh Tiwari for a role in a television serial.
Tiwari, who is the producer of the ongoing hit show Madhubala, is planning another on Life Ok. It is a story of a Kashmiri girl and a Hindu boy. Sheikh has been approached to play the father of the girl.
