Bathinda, April 2
The Weekly Iron Folic Supplement (WIFS) scheme has been launched in the district with an aim to arrest anaemia in the adolescent population. The target population under the scheme will be given the first dose of medicine tomorrow.

Students as well as staff members of the government schools, government-aided schools, Adarsh schools and model schools will be covered under the project, which is part of a nationwide campaign of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) under the school health programme.

District School Health Programme Officer Dr Kundan Pal said the iron folic acid tablets would be given to the students of classes VI to X. All the batches of medicines have already been made available to the respective school authorities through the District Education Officer (Secondary). "Every Wednesday, students will be given these tablets and tomorrow they will take their first dose," he said.

The in-charges of the listed schools have been designated as the nodal officers for the project.

Further, Anganwari workers have been directed to cover the adolescents who are not studying.

It may be mentioned that the government has been running a similar programme to provide iron supplement to the students of primary as well as secondary schools. While the same project continues in primary schools, secondary school students have now been covered under the WIFS scheme.

The changed folic acid tablet being made available under the WIFS scheme includes 100 mg of elemental iron and 500 micrograms of folic acid.

The primary school students are given folic acid twice a week after mid-day meal. Since November 1 last year, double fortified salt is being used in mid-day meals to fight anaemia. Instead of iodised salt, double fortified salt is being used and is being made available in the ration allocated for mid-day meals.

Bollywood curious about success of Pbi films: Preeti

Bathinda, April 2
“I would rather sit at home and take care of my son than doing every Bollywood film that comes my way,” said actress Preeti Jhangiani, when asked why she was not seen in any big-budget Bollywood film after ‘Mohabbatein’.

Preeti, who was in the city to promote her Punjabi film ‘Bikker Bai Sentimental’, added, “Unlike many other actresses, I like to do films of my liking rather than doing two-bit roles. In the meantime, I did Kannad and Tamil films. And now I am doing a Punjabi film. Regional films are doing very well and Bollywood is quite curious about the success of Punjabi films and has been closely following it.”

Preeti, who is not fluent in Punjabi, said she had to work hard on her dialogues. “I did not let the language barrier trouble me. Initially, I had a tough time remembering the dialogues but gradually I was at ease. I have done the dubbing in the film myself,” she said.

When asked if the audience was prepared to accept an actress who is not only married but is also a mother, she said, “I can vouch for the fact that the audience is ready for married actresses. So many Bollywood actresses, who are doing great work even as they are married and have kids. It is the chemistry between the protagonists that works for or against the actors. The same is true for Punjabi cinema as well.”

“Gone are the days when the actresses used to turn reclusive after getting married. The taboo attached to married actresses does not exist anymore. The filmmakers no longer have a perception that the audience would not like to watch a married actress on screen. If we present a good story, I do not think the audience will have a problem,” she added.

Jassi Jasraj takes a dig at rapper Honey Singh

Bathinda, April 2
“Honey Singh has time to sing lewd songs but he does not have time to honour his promises and collaborate with singers who are doing meaningful work,” said Jassi Jasraj, a Punjabi singer who was recently in news for his song ‘Tezaab’ which openly derided the rapper for the lyrics of his songs.

Recalling his tiff with the rapper, which also led him change his name from Karan Jasbir, Jasraj said, “We worked together in 2001 and when our album got popular he started boasting that I had made a name because of him. I told him that I will change my name and make myself popular once again. I had paid him to rap for my song for the album ‘National Villager’, but he later failed to honour his promise.”

Jasraj was in the city to promote his maiden Punjabi film ‘Bikker Bai Sentimental’.

Talking about transition from singing to acting, he said, “Many singers are making foray into the film industry. For me, it was a natural progression as I was a member of the Film Writers’ Association, Mumbai, since 1999.

One is more capable of emoting the scenes and dialogues one writes. And that is how I moved on to become an actor.”

“Bikker Bai Sentimental’ is an action-packed film about a common man and his daily struggles against inflation, corruption and several other social ills. Every single person belonging to the middle class will identify with the story of this film,” he said.

Talking abut the competition that the other Punjabi films releasing around 'Bikker Bai Sentimental' would pose, he said, “I welcome strong competition. There is no fun running alone and winning a race. If our film does good business despite stiff competition, then we would feel like patting our backs.”

Incomplete road ‘serves’ as parking lot
A stretch on Bathinda-Mansa road is dotted with four-wheeler showrooms
Megha Mann
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, April 2
An incomplete stretch on the Bathinda-Mansa road, from near Roshan Lal Oil Mill to the railway under bridge near Focal Point, has turned into a "parking lot" for the showrooms of four-wheelers, including cars and tractors, that dot the road.

For the past around one year and a half, the right side of the road is unmotorable due to which the entire heavy volume of traffic moves in a single lane. Taking advantage of the incomplete patch, showroom owners park the vehicles meant for sale in the open space in front of the showrooms.

A local transporter, Surinder Bansal, said parking of vehicles along the road should be stopped. "Though heavy vehicles cannot ply on this incomplete stretch, two-wheelers can, thereby easing the congestion in the single lane. With vehicles parked on this stretch, those riding two-wheelers do not have any other option but to use the single lane, which adds to traffic congestion," said Bansal.

Industrialist Raman Watts, who commutes on the road daily, said a number of accidents have taken place on the stretch. "The government is not bothered about people and their safety. The area is so badly congested that it becomes impossible to cross the stretch without hitting another vehicle. It seems that the city police is more busy earning revenue by towing away wrongly-parked vehicles rather than paying attention towards the grave problem on this road," he added.

While the road falls under the Building and Roads (B and R) division, the Bathinda Development Authority (BDA) has been asked to lay it till Kotshamir village.

The superintending engineer of the BDA, JJ Kumar, said an estimate of around Rs 40 lakh to Rs 50 lakh was being prepared to lay a road on the stretch, which is around 800 metre long and 11 metre wide.

He added that the work was held up as a sewer was to be laid. "We decided to stop the work so that sewer could be first laid on the stretch. Had we built the road without the sewer, it would have resulted in wastage of money and resources," he said adding that the work would begin in the next two to three months.

However, sources in the BDA said that after the SAD-BJP government took over for the second time in March last year, it ordered a Vigilance inquiry into some works of the BDA in Bathinda that left the officers, who were not involved in the scam, de-motivated. Even the contractor refused to finish the work and left the project in between.

Now that the higher authorities have given a green signal, the work is expected to begin soon, the sources said.

9 lakh MT of wheat expected to arrive in district mandis

Tribune News Service

Bathinda, April 2
Close to 9 lakh metric tonne (MT) of wheat is expected to be procured in Bathinda district this rabi season as compared to 8.25 lakh MT procured by various government and private agencies last season, says District Mandi Officer (DMO) Gurmeet Singh.

The district administration and the government is making arrangements for procurement ahead of the arrival of produce in grain markets, which is expected within 10 days or so.

A visit to the local grain market today revealed that none of the farmers brought his produce to the mandi so far. However, 5 to 10 per cent of the cotton brought to the market was still lying there.

Local arhtiyas said weighing cotton had become unbearable for labourers due to rise in mercury. The cotton lying in the mandi was likely to be lifted within the next one week, they added.

Meanwhile, farmers said the present weather was ideal for the standing wheat crop and harvesting would begin within the next one week or so.

Harvesting has got delayed due to intermittent rains during the past some days. However, procurement season officially began today.

Farmers said the delay in harvesting of wheat was due to untimely rains which delayed ripening of grains.

"But now the weather has improved and if it continues to remain favourable, wheat growers are likely to get a better yield this season," said, Gurdev Singh, a farmer at the grain market.

A local businessman and an arthiya Ashok Dhunikke said the government was trying to make proper arrangements at various grain markets so as to ensure smooth procurement of wheat.

He said the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat was Rs 1285 per quintal last season. However, various procurement agencies would purchase wheat at Rs 1350 per quintal this season.

District Mandi Officer Gurmeet Singh said farmers have been advised to bring dried wheat to grain markets.

"The moisture content in wheat should be between 12 and 14 per cent, which would be checked by moisture meter, a device every grain market has been provided with," the official said.

He hoped that payments would be made to the farmers within 48 hours of purchase and lifting would be done within 72 hours.

Cancel helpers' transfers, demands Anganwadi Mulazim Union
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, April 2
Members of the Anganwadi Mulazim Union today held a meeting on the premises of the Zila Parishad office.

Jasbir Kaur, block head of the union said, "Last week, the District Programme Officer and the Child Development Programme Officer inspected the centres and transferred some of the helpers to other centres."

"The helpers who had been working at a centre for the past couple of months were suddenly transferred. Not only they are facing problems while settling at new centres, the children at the new centres also feel alienated from them since they need time to get comfortable with the anganwadi workers," Jasbir said.

"They also accused us of pilfering milk powder. Every centre gets four kilograms of milk powder for a month. The anganwadi workers have to use the stock judiciously for making 'kheer' and 'dalia' for the children of the centre. Now, the officers also want us to give five grams of milk to every child for breakfast. How do they expect us to manage all this with only four kilograms of milk?" she asked.

"They alleged that we had misused milk powder. We are arguing that we don't have enough milk to use, then how will we misuse it. They also accused us of making fake enrolment of children," she said.

"The union is demanding that the helpers should be transferred back to the centres where they were working earlier and the accusation of the misuse of milk powder and fake enrolment of children should be withdrawn. We have given the officers concerned 15 days time to settle the issue. If they fail to fulfil our demands, we will chalk out our plan of action," she said.

What Union Demands

  • Transfer the helpers back to the centres where they were working earlier.
  • Withdraw the accusation of the misuse of milk powder and fake enrolment of children.

Tribune News Service

Bathinda, April 3
World Autism Awareness Day went unnoticed in the city today. The day was supposed to meant for creating awareness about the ailment, which afflicts two children per thousand, but none of the non-governmental organisations in the city observed the day.

Paediatrician Dr Satish Jindal said as per studies, the incidence is higher in male children than females (with a ratio of 4 is to 1).

He said he had not received new autism cases in the past six years. “We are only following up the old cases. In most of the cases, it becomes difficult to assess the intelligence quotient (IQ) of the child. The child has to be referred to PGIMER, Chandigarh, for the assessment of the IQ,” he said.

Paediatrician Dr Ajay Gupta from Health Street Hospitals said most of the parents were unable to read first signs of autism, which usually develop around the age of two years.

“The autistic children lack of social interest, lack of communication and have inappropriate behaviour. Such children do not share their toys, are more at ease by themselves and prefer to be lonely. They have delayed speech, do not play with other children and are different from the usual children,” he said.

He said the need of hour was to create awareness on the ailment. We should also plan for an education institute for these children.
