Their worst performance was when they finished last in 2011 winning just four of their 14 matches. The only other time they have failed to be in the top four was when they finished fifth in 2010.

Led by a new commander in Mahela Jayawardene, Delhi Daredevils would look to right the wrongs and go the full distance in the tournament's sixth edition.

The biggest strength of this team is their top batting and bowling line-up. With batsmen like David Warner, Virender Sehwag and Mahela Jayawardene, the Daredevils are capable of taking on any bowling. With Morne Morkel, Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav in their ranks, Delhi have one of the most fearsome pace battery. Delhi Daredevils will have to avoid complacency, they have always done well in the group stages but they have been awful in the knockouts. Kevin Pietersen will be a big miss and if another of the big three gets injured, Delhi will be in a fix. New recruits: Johan Botha, Jesse Ryder, Jeevan Mendis.

Players to watch out for: Virender Sehwag, David Warner, Mahela Jayawardene, Unmukt Chand, Morne Morkel and Umesh Yadav.

Squad: Ajit Agarkar, Andre Russell, Arisht Singhvi, Ashish Nehra, CM Gautam, David Warner, Gulam Bodi, Irfan Pathan, Jeevan Mendis, Jesse Ryder, Johan Botha, Kedar Jadhav, Kevin Pietersen, Mahela Jayawardene, Manpreet Juneja, Morne Morkel, Naman Ojha, Pawan Negi, Roelof Van Der Merwe, Royston Dias, Siddarth Kaul, Sujit Nayak, Shahbaz Nadeem, Umesh Yadav, Unmukt Chand, Varun Aaron, Venugopal Rao, Virender Sehwag, Yogesh Nagar.!.

Viru, Mc Cullum doubtful for opener.

Virender Sehwag is a doubtful starter for Wednesday's IPL opener due to a back problem. "He is having back spasm. We have no idea when he's joining the side. We will take a call after he's here," coach Eric Simons said hinting that the team is prepared to play without the swashbuckling opener. The team will also miss out on last season's Purple cap holder Morne Morkel for the first game. The tall speedster bowled Titans to a semis place in South Africa's domestic cricket T20 Challenge."They are playing semis tomorrow and if they make final (on April 7) we may miss Morne for another game," Simons added. The Daredevils are already missing Kevin Pietersen who had been ruled out for the entire season. — PTI

Patil quits as Mumbai selector

Mumbai, April 2
National chief selector Sandeep Patil has resigned from his post as chairman of the Mumbai Cricket Association's selection panel. "I have received a letter from him stating he is resigning, but the letter has to be tabled before the managing committee and it has to be accepted," said MCA joint secretary Nitin Dalal.

Dalal said Patil has cited his inability to watch local matches as the reason for quitting the job.

"He has said in his letter that he is unable to watch local matches and he is quitting on moral grounds," said the MCA official. Patil confirmed to PTI that he has resigned without elaborating.

MCA president Ravi Savant said that Patil has not yet spoken to him on the matter.

"He has not spoken to me yet," Savant said in a text message when PTI queried him whether Patil has quit the MCA selection panel.

Patil's resignation would not have a major impact immediately as the current domestic season has already concluded with Mumbai having clinched the Ranji Trophy title for the 40th time.

The former middle-order batsman took over the reins of MCA's senior selection panel after he was unexpectedly pitchforked as the new chief selector of the national five-member panel by the Cricket Board last September.

The ex-national coach was handpicked by BCCI chief N Srinivasan to head the panel when the new national selection committee was chosen at the Board's last AGM.

Meanwhile, MCA has appointed former India stumper Chandrakant Pandit as chairman of its newly-formed technical committee which has replaced the erstwhile cricket improvement committee. — PTI

Gayle and Dilshan had their first net session for RCB after they had arrived yesterday late night. Both of them batted with the same vigour as they normally do out in the middle. They spanked bowlers mercilessly.

Former captain Daniel Vettori, who is coming into the team after recovering from an injury, also rolled his arms over. The Kiwi looked relaxed and fit, unlike Zaheer Khan who is also recovering from calf-muscle injury and was absent from the session.

Zaheer had sustained injury during Mumbai's Ranji Trophy game against Gujarat last December and was then dropped from the Indian Test squad against England.

In the afternoon, Mumbai Indians practiced in the stadium with Kieron Pollard and Dwanye Smith took guard at the nets to bat. Sachin Tendulkar, Ambati Rayudu and Rohit Sharma also batted at the nets.

Prior to get some batting practice, Mumbai Indian players concentrated on fielding under the watchful eyes of South African great Jonty Rhodes. Jaydev Unadkat, Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha bowled to almost all the top Mumbai Indians batsmen. — PTI

"There is no reason why India should not win the tie, especially after having Leander and Somdev back into the squad. We always count on Leander who has been doing it for us for last 20 years. Somdev is in great form as well," Yuki told reporters here after the practice session at KSLTA stadium here.

Yuki said that the Indians are not taking Indonesia lightly, but are confident of pulling off the tie, especially playing in home conditions.

"We are playing the tie under home conditions which always is an added advantage," he said.

Yuki said the surface here has been relaid which suits the Indians, but only thing they have to get used to the condition and the bounce.

"However, courts around the world are generally similar. We have two more days to get used to it. I think it should be fine," he said.

On personal front, Yuki seemed happy that he remained injury-free till now and it provides him with a great chance of getting higher-up the rankings. "One of the key concerns for me is to be able to play a full season," he said. — PTI
