Mulayam raps Akhilesh, says UP Govt not doing well
Tribune News Service

Lucknow, March 23
With an eye on 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav today rapped the year-old Akhilesh Yadav government over the knuckles asking it to get down to business.

Serving his son’s government in Uttar Pradesh a five-month ultimatum to improve its working, the party patriarch said slackness and incompetency is not acceptable at any cost.

Addressing a massive public function to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, Yadav Senior did not mince words to flay his party’s ministers. He said the ministers were busy in “mauj masti” (merry-making) and were not serious about their work.

Expressing unhappiness over the performance of his party’s government, he said, “I have reports about each one of the ministers. If I ask party workers to rate their performance, the situation will become embarrassing. Remember the Samajwadi Party has come to power because of the atrocities suffered by our workers during the BSP regime. Those who today are ministers did not fight it out on the streets and should not take their job for granted.”

Yadav recalled that BJP leader LK Advani had told him that the image of the UP Government was not good. “I know Advaniji for years. He is an honest man who never tells lies. He told me that about the corruption in UP. We have to deal with this firmly-I want to know how many people have faced action for corruption in the government?” he asked.

Not even sparing his son, he said, “I want to tell Akhilesh that he should not be happy when people call him good-hearted and simple. To run a government you should be stern and firm and not just simple,” he said.

He warned the Chief Minister that if he fails to improve the working of his government, the chances of his returning to power would be negligible.

Ministers busy in ‘mauj-masti’

SP supremo said the ministers were busy in “mauj masti” (merry-making) and not serious about their work. “I have received reports about each and every minister. If I ask party workers to rate their performance, the situation will become embarrassing.

Hope J&K people won’t heed to separatists' call: PC
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 23
Finance Minister P Chidambaram today rejected the suggestion that tourism in Jammu and Kashmir was “back to zero” after the execution of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. Hoping that the people of the state would opt for peace and a sense of security than respond to the call of separatists, the FM was certain that the backbone of the state, the tourism industry, that has been suffering due to the recent situation in the Valley would recover by April-May to reach the boom it enjoyed in 2012 when pleasure and religious tourism touched a record high.

“I don't get the impression that we are back to zero. After the execution of Afzal Guru there have been some protests and a rise in the level of violence. I sincerely hope that violence will subside. I have consistently told Jammu and Kashmir that peace is the way for development. Unless there is a sense of peace and security, J&K cannot develop. I am confident that the present phase of uncertainty will come to an end,” the former Home Minister said at the National Editors' Conference here.

Chidambaram said changes were visible in the state. “I am told yesterday was relatively peaceful. There was no curfew yesterday. I sincerely hope that people of the state will not heed the call of separatists and heed the call of government and civil society and try to help restore peace and order in sense of security. I am sure in the month of April-May we will restore sense of security that the people of J&K want,” he said.

Beni Prasad at it again

Lucknow, March 23
Days after apologising for his offensive remarks, Union Minister for Steel Beni Prasad Verma was back to his ways as he attacked Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav saying one who “keeps looking after the interests of his own family cannot be a true Samajwadi”.

Verma said Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi were true Samajwadis as they kept the nation above their family. On the contrary, Mulayam was busy looking after his own family and therefore could not be termed a real Samajwadi. Addressing a dharna organised by the UPCC today, Verma said he would not quit his ministerial post until he ensured that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi became the Prime Minister.

“Some people are dreaming of becoming the PM by winning merely 60 seats. Their dreams will remain dreams,” he said hinting at SP party patriarch's reported prime ministerial ambitions. — TNS

Lucknow, March 23
Deoria Assistant Superintendent of Police, who yesterday made an offensive remark about a rape victim, has been transferred as the ASP CB-CID to Kanpur leaving critics guessing if the move was reprimand at all.

ASP Keshav Chandra Goswami was caught on camera disparagingly asking the rape survivor’s husband why anyone would rape an elderly woman like her.

The camera footage shows him publicly asking the woman and his husband of how many children the woman has. Hearing the answer he comments,”Her oldest child is 17-18 year old. Itni purani aurat ka kaun balaatkar arega? (Why would anyone rape such an elderly woman?) While the SO and another policeman have been sent to the police lines, the officer who actually made the distasteful remark has been transferred to a bigger town and better job profile.

CBI concludes arguments in trial against Sajjan Kumar
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 23
The CBI today concluded its arguments in the trial against Sajjan Kumar in one of the cases relating to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, rejecting the Congress leader’s claim that he had no role in the killing of five persons in Raj Nagar area of Delhi Cantonment.

Sajjan Kumar was very much in Delhi during the period October 31-November 3 when the massacre took place and “there is not an iota of evidence that he even raised his little finger to save innocent lives or to intervene in a meaningful manner,” CBI counsel RS Cheema argued in the court of J.R. Aryan, Learned Additional District and Sessions Judge at Karkardooma.

The contentions of Sajjan Kumar were “factually incorrect and logically unimaginable,” the CBI counsel said. According to the CBI, the Raj Nagar area incident was part of a conspiracy that had led to the riots in other parts of Delhi.

Armed marauders carefully targeted only Sikh homes and selected Sikh males for liquidation and the mobs were assisted and abetted by a partisan police force and had the patronisation of the political class.

“Not only were the Sikhs the only targets, the members of the majority community who dared to help them were threatened with dire consequences,” the CBI said.

The case relates to the murder of Kehar Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Narinderpal Singh, Raghuwinder Singh and Kuldip Singh.

Besides Sajjan Kumar five others are facing trial in the case for allegedly inciting a mob against the Sikh community in Delhi Cantonment area.

Victims’ Counsel HS Phoolka today said the court would now decide on March 28 on the application of the victims to take two newspapers dated 8.11.1984 and 25.11.1984 on record. Also, Sajjan Kumar’s lawyer had been given the final date of April 3 to add whatever he wants to add to the arguments.

Will explore every option for Sanjay, says Priya Dutt

Mumbai, March 23
Congress MP Priya Dutt today said that their family would explore all the options to seek clemency for her actor-brother Sanjay Dutt.

“As a sister, as a family...we will always stand by him (Sanjay). That is what any loving family will do. It is only logical that as a family we will explore every option,” Priya said in a press statement issued here.

“If the purpose of incarceration is reform and punishment for crime committed, then I believe he has undergone both,” she added.

Stating that the Dutt family has accepted the Supreme Court judgement, Priya said, “We stand strong together in this trying time to give each other strength and courage.”

“A 20-year ordeal has finally come to an end. Twenty years is a lifetime for most people. In Sanjay's case this has been a lifetime of tension and anxiety...a lifetime of repentance and reform...a lifetime of punishment and trial,” she said.

She thanked the media and the film industry for their support.

“For Sanjay, versions of verdicts have been passed on him throughout these years. He has been judged by all during these 20 years and sometimes in the most harsh ways,” she said.

“Yet, he has stood strong and firm, normalised his life, served the society, helped and stood by his colleagues, friends and family and is today one of the most dependable people in the film fraternity,” Priya added.

Kapurthala, March 23
The Railways will recruit 1.52 lakh new employees in a phased manner to run its work efficiently. Union minister of state (MoS) for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury stated this during his visit to Rail Coach Factory (RCF) here today.

To a query regarding the recent hike of 5.7 per cent in freight charges to be implemented from April 1, Chowdhury termed the hike necessary. He stated that the Railways was left with no option but to make this hike for providing better facilities to the general public.

He stated that the Railways was bearing the burden of Rs 25,000 crores per annum for providing cheaper journey to its passengers. It was for this reason that the department decided to hike the freight rates.

Chowdhury said a number of prestigious projects were in the pipeline and the department required Rs. 4.5 lakh crore to materialise these.

It will take a few months to install Anubhuti coaches in some trains, he said.
