Write from the heart
What happens when a Belgian writer born to professional puppeteers, a Swiss writer who travels but is not a tourist, and a French writer who was born in Teheran and brought up in Paris come together? Together, they promise a literary evening of contemporary writing in French. Soiree Litteraire 2013, a joint initiative by the Embassy of France, Pro Helvetia-Swiss Arts Council and Embassy of Switzerland, includes conversations and readings from books by the authors. Each of them bring in their own influences and in turn take back a dozen inspirations.
Personal note It wasn't tough for Chowra Makaremi to get to the heart of the Iranian revolution. Her debut work, Aziz's Notebook, talks about the turbulent times and the Teheran of the 1980s. "Even though I moved out of Teheran when I was six and escaped to Paris, it wasn't difficult for me to track back. Once you've experienced something, it's buried but it'll come back." She adds, "The book is a testimony written by my grandfather. It is about the decade after the Iranian revolution, set against the backdrop of a family where I was a child." The notebook recounts the tragic destiny of Aziz's two daughters in the Teheran of the 80s. "My aunt was arrested and executed despite being pregnant; my mother was imprisoned and tortured for seven years before being finally killed in the mass murder of political prisoners." Apart from the translation from Farsi to French, it was only the structure that she tampered with. "I've retained everything as it is, except for things like dividing the contents into chapters and naming each chapter. Only the footnotes are mine." Travel buff He often likes to take a trip down the memory lane and take the readers along in his expeditions. David Collin was born to an Indian father and you never know what's coming next. "In that sense, my trip to India has been very special and maybe I go back and pen something two years down the line," he shrugs. The way he did about his travels to Mongolia, Argentina and Shanghai. "I was there for three months and the hero in my book Memorial Circles travels to these three places to rebuild his memory and finds a way to return to his birth-place." It's fiction but the one inspired by reality. "I wanted to work and write something about memory as well as oblivion," shares the Fribourg-born author. His first work, Ghost Train, spoke of his travels too. "That was also my own story in conjunction with my father's. It explored a father-son relationship and how a person has many fathers. For example, your mentor is a father too." He adds, "It's very important for me to travel. It's not travelling to write, but for inspiration." Fiction man The Belgian writer Nicolas Ancion joins them a little later but well on time for the event. Having written fiction for adults, young adults, children and theatre plays, the author of The 35-billion Euro Man brings in his own elements on the table. manpriya@tribunemail.com

Purity of expression
Takers for classical arts amid the younger generation are few and far between. In the case of sitar player Manu Kumar Seen, who comes from Jalandhar to the city beautiful for a performance at the 43rd Pracheen Kala Kendra Nritya and Sangeet Sammelan, it is quite the opposite. Albeit being the son of renowned sitar player Ustad Lachhman Singh Seen music came in legacy, Manu sure has carved a separate niche with his hardwork and dedication.
Along with Akram Khan from the Ajrara Gharana on tabla, Manu creates magic on stage. He has learnt nuances of his art from the Etawah Gharana, which is a blend of Gayaki Ang (singing style) and Tantrakari Ang (instrumental style). Manu's soulful adherence to ragas has brought him much recognition in the form of medals and awards. "My family has been my ultimate motivation. My father is like a beacon for me," he says. Manu believes a virtuous teacher can act as a true alchemist and so did his guru, the legendary sitar player Ustad Shahid Parvez. "That was the period of true transformation," he adds while Akram Khan has a word of advice, "Give your child a musical instrument, take them to some classical concerts and see how they surprise you." Spring in step Kuchipudi dance has been a tradition since the 14th century and the couple, Guru Jayarama Rao and Vanashree Rao, enjoy each movement with elan. "It's usually tricky for a male to learn this art, but for me it's a family tradition and I value it," says Jayarama. With no background, Vanashree solely went with her instinct; rest was all about commitment and discipline. Vanashree and Jayarama have a very refreshing approach, "Indian culture has been alive for centuries but Indian classical forms have always had a very limited audience; we don't expect a crowd like that in a cricket stadium or a rock concert." Apart from major festivals in India, they have performed in over sixty countries, including USA, Europe, Japan and more. The couple hopes to maintain the guru-shishya parampara. "For this, we have demonstrated the beauty of Kuchipudi dance through lectures across the country," they echo. At their dance school in New Delhi, the couple is preparing Kuchipudi exponents for the future. All the best!

Dance pe chance!
She has danced her way into the top four contestants of Nach Baliye Season 5 and you've seen her shaking a leg while donning a beaming smile on her face. Now that the competition gets a notch higher, so does her will to win. We are talking of none other than Chandigarh girl Sargun Mehta, who paved her way into the television industry and is battling it out on the stage of Nach Baliye with her partner Ravi Dubey, who also proposed her during the show. Read on as she spills the beans about the show and her future plans.
The beginning As she recollects how she got into the show, she says, "I received a call from the producers of the show, which is one of the biggest dance reality shows on television and I was more than excited to do it. One I signed it, there was no looking back. However, it was not a cakewalk; performing requires expertise for which we have been working very hard." Frozen moments Sargun has fond memories to share, "The best moment that I experienced during the show was when Ravi proposed to me on national television. Also when we performed on the song Aaja Nachle and the judges gave us a standing ovation, it was indeed overwhelming." However, she has also been through tough times during the show, "Although I am not the kind of person who blanks out on the stage, as I did not get to sleep for over four consecutive nights there was a time when I blanked out for a couple of seconds," she says. Top shot Sargun makes no qualms about her intentions of winning the show and hopes that the audience will vote for her, "Considering that we work round-the-clock, our joints bear the brunt of it all. We have been on pain-killers for a long time now and have not been able to spare even a day to see a doctor." She adds, "I really want to win this competition because I've given it my hundred per cent. I am certain that the audience will notice it." Future plans "After the show ends, the first thing that I will do is hit the spa," she quips. Sargun also confesses that she might tie the knot with Ravi, "My mother is very keen on getting me married and I think that by the end of this year or the beginning of the next, I will get married to Ravi," she signs off. Watch out for her! amarjot@tribunemail.com

Young & vivacious
"I think I am still a nikamma and for my parents, I will always be one," Saqeeb Saleem, the nikamma Sameer of the much-appreciated movie Mere Dad Ki Maruti hasn't taken off after the success of his movie. He isn't calculating, he hasn't decided and he definitely wouldn't want to foresee, but Saqeeb sure feels he has just turned on the ignition and it is a long drive ahead. "I am glad that audiences liked Mere Dad Ki Maruti; we put in our best and now it feels good to see applause coming our way," says the actor, who comes to Chandigarh with the lead actress Rhea Chakraborty to say thanks to the city folks for being there!
"We never wanted to make a Punjabi film, all we wanted to put forth was a light-hearted film that can be enjoyed by one and all," says Saqeeb, who can share his wish-list marginally. "Yash Raj Films have given me a chance, which is awesome. I would like to work with Raj Kumar Hirani and I want Aditya Chopra to direct me in a romantic movie," adds Saqeeb. Rhea takes over, "I am ecstatic seeing the response; we shot the film in Chandigarh and it's great to be back." jasmine@tribunemail.com

Wedding designers
What makes a wedding special is the rasams and rituals. And here are these two young girls who are working hard to make these rituals more interesting and memorable.
From the vanity boxes to chowkis to sit on while performing such rituals, from the fruit and sweet tokris to the jewellery and accessories boxes for the bride, from suitcases to 'matkis', from jaago to trousseau packaging-everything is being designed with elegance by this designer-duo. Nanaki and Shagun started Pattaree some eight months back. Coming from the background of architecture, Nanaki wanted to make a mark in the business world 'through something ethnic and vintage'. Shagun, from the IT background, also had a keen interest in designing. Their common passion brought the two friends together to start this venture. "As I have had basic training in designing, I wanted to implement it in into some thing culturally-rooted and ethnically-rich," she says. "We try to make our products different. We innovate while remaining within the bounds of tradition," she adds. Their wedding packaging is in sync with the theme. The products are made to order and customised according to one's requirement. The detailing of the concepts extends even up to products such as shagan envelopes. Even the small oil bottles for the welcoming ceremony of the new couple are exquisitely designed. Participating in The Woman, a fashion exhibition, this Chandigarh-based duo works together to design the products. "We infuse freshness and richness to the wedding heritage," says Nanaki.

Doc Talk Dermal fillers are materials that we use to replace and augment skin tissue. Majority of our skin is made up of collagen bundles and a hydrating material between those. These create the shape and fullness that we see. But skin tissue can be lost because of heredity, sun exposure, muscle action, pressure, sleep positions, smoking, and weight loss or just with age. As this tissue is lost and there is less natural filler underneath, the skin becomes less taut. This can leave wrinkles, folds, depressions, grooves and sagging skin. Refilling these areas restores normal contours and rejuvenates the area and the face. Several kinds of dermal fillers have been developed to replace that tissue and different ones are best for different people and areas. Temporary and permanent dermal fillers have been approved for plumping up soft tissue, filling in facial wrinkles and smoothing the skin. Many patients require more than one injection to achieve the desired effect, with results typically lasting only six months or so. There are different types of dermal fillers : Collagen - suitable for deep lines and some scars. The effects last for about four to six months. Hyaluronic acid - suitable for thin surface lines, such as those that occur around the mouth and across the forehead. The effects last for about one year. Hyaluronan (a form of hyaluronic acid) - suitable for deep lines and acne scars. This product can be used as an alternative for people who are allergic to collagen. The effects last for about six months. Polylactic acid - suitable for skin depressions and deep lines. The polylactic acid prompts the treated skin to produce collagen. Polyacrylamide - suitable for deep lines. Once injected, the product forms a soft and permanent implant. Fat injections - fat tissue is taken from other areas of the body using a thin needle. The fat is sterilised and injected into the facial line or wrinkle. Effects can be long lasting. Touch-up injections may be needed in some cases. This treatment is also known as 'microlipoinjection'. Watch out The adverse fallouts which can occur due to fillers are infection (most common at the injection site), temporary bleeding, lump, bumps and in rare cases permanent disfigurement. Exercise caution If you choose to have this type of cosmetic procedure, exercise caution — get dermal filler injections only under the direct supervision of a licensed, dermatologist or a cosmetic surgeon who is skilled in its use and trained to handle unexpected problems. Deepika: Ranbir is still possessive about me!
Former lovers Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor have graced the screen together in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The beautiful actors talks about their journey, chemistry and more. On romantic possibilities Deepika Padukone: Both Ranbir and I thought a lot before signing the film. We are great friends now and there is nothing romantic between us. All the permutations, combinations, calculations, possibilities had been analysed before signing the film. Ranbir is still possessive and protective about me. Growing up Ranbir Kapoor: Bachna Ae Haseeno was our second film and our first film together. We both were quite new at that time. I feel Deepika has grown tremendously as an actress and as a person. It is very easy to pretend that you are in love with her because she is very nice. I mean look at her smile, it is so easy to love this smile! Career graph Deepika Padukone: Ranbir and I have known each other since our debut film. Of course, Ranbir has gone onto do some very fine work in fine films and he has swept the awards for Rockstar and Barfi! What I have seen and learnt from him is that he is a very relaxed and chilled out guy. On Ayan Mukerji Ranbir Kapoor: Yah Jawaani Hai Deewani is Ayan Mukerji's baby and we are glad to be a part of it and lend our talent to it. It is a mad and an irreverent film. If anything goes wrong, we will just blame Ayan (laughs). Ayan is my closest friend. |

Priyanka's style essentials
Priyanka Chopra has transformed into the ultimate bombshell. She is a style icon now and someone who always turns heads for the right reasons. Would you like to know Priyanka Chopra's style essentials and secrets? Read on to know more.
It's a holiday I love my holiday clothes which are shorts, ganjis, bikinis, chappals, hats and glares. I have a shelf, in my wardrobe, dedicated to holiday clothes. I go for holiday to beach locations and I never go to cold places like mountains. I love the beaches. Skin deep I buy lingerie and shoes wherever I go. I am quite a collector. Good shoes and lingerie are extremely important as they can make or break your look. Moreover, they feel good too. I love the girly stuff. I encourage women of all ages to pay as much importance to shoes and lingerie as they do to their clothes. Bare necessities Whenever I leave home, I take my cell phone and my backpack, which has money, make-up and the book I am reading. I need these things wherever I go. When I am on the move, I do a lot of work on my cell phone. And I have my staff with me wherever I go. What would I do without them? I am so blessed to have them. Hair and there I cannot style my own hair at all; I cannot even make a ponytail! Thank God I am always working and I have stylists who are always looking after my hair. Left to me, I would just leave it loose and wear a hat. The LBD I love little black dresses whether they are sexy and formal or playful and casual. If I could, I would wear black all the time. I would even wear a little-black-dress on my wedding day but I know that will not happen. I will have to wear a fancy ghaghara choli with a shimmering long dupatta. I will include some black in it, maybe.

The turning point
Actress Gwyneth Paltrow says a dramatic overhaul of her diet changed her as a person and also had an impact on her marriage to Chris Martin. The 40-year-old actress, who has children Apple, nine and Moses, seven, with the Coldplay front man, undertook a dramatic cleanse a few years ago, which saw her cut out wheat, dairy, sugar and processed foods. She says that altering her eating habits made her a better person, reported a magazine.
"You feel lighter and your emotions get smoother. Before, I had a lot of unexpressed anger. I made everyone else's feelings more important than my own. I'd suck it up and then be alone in my car yelling at traffic or fighting with hangers in my closet when they got stuck together," Paltrow said. "You're not learning anything unless you're having the difficult conversations. Dealing with things directly changed my relationships. Sometimes, when you get clear about who you are, others get less comfortable because they liked who you were. It's changed my marriage, too, but he's up for the challenge," she added. —PTI

A woman’s world Sony Entertainment Television (SET) has always highlighted various facets of the progressive Indian woman. And keeping up with the tradition, SET is proud to present a new-age woman-oriented fiction show called Chhanchhan. Produced by Optimystix Entertainment, Chhanchhan is the story of a vivacious girl Chhanchhan (played by Sanaya Irani), who is by profession a dog trainer. She is a free-spirited, independent young woman; modern in her thought but still deeply rooted in her culture. She stands up for what is right and raises her voice against all that is wrong. In complete contrast to her is the strict disciplinarian Umaben (played by Supriya Pathak), who takes all the decisions in her household and sets the rules for her family. Chhanchhan is indeed a story that will touch many generations of women. Says Vipul Shah, producer, Optimystix, "We have had a long and fruitful relationship with Sony Entertainment Television while working on some landmark shows together. Chhanchhan is the story of a young, feisty woman of substance. She is someone who loves listening to rock music, but at the same time will recite the Gayatri Mantra every morning. She is someone who stands for what she believes is right and will not shy away from voicing her opinion. She is very much the Indian woman of today and we hope that our viewers will love every bit of her character." Set in Ahmedabad, the show explores how the vivacious Chhanchhan applies her intelligence, plays her cards well and puts a dysfunctional family that she marries into, back on track. The cast includes a strong ensemble of actors led by the veteran Supriya Pathak, the vivacious Sanaya Irani, who is paired opposite newcomer Farhan Khan.. Starting from March 25, on SET at 9:00 pm every Monday to Thursday. |

Time to bid adieu
When Gulki Joshi debuted with Phir Subah Hogi, little did she know how her journey would pan out. The show that starred with a bang soon lost momentum and after being shifted to the late night slot, it went for a toss. Now that the show ends soon, Gulki looks back.
How are you feeling now that your show is ending? It is the last day of my shoot and I have mixed feelings. The good thing is that from tomorrow I will be able to spend time with family and friends. I will get some breathing space, but I am feeling bad that a good show like this is ending too early. I will miss the actors and the sets. Do you feel the changes in the time slot affected the ratings? I don't know. I don't pay attention to TRPs or time slot. I give my best to each shot and the rest isn't in my hands. What you will remember about the show five years from now? That it was a different show that started on a good note. There were great expectations from the show and we worked hard to match up to them. We did lose the plot in the middle, but had given some really cool twists. What's next for you? A long holiday; nothing is planned though. I might just chill for a while before heading out. Are you seeing someone? No. I don't have the time. Work keeps me very busy.
