Jail inmate chews off fellow’s thumb
Ludhiana, March 21
An inmate of the Central Jail chewed his fellow inmates thumb off following a fight on the jail premises today.
The victim, identified as Rajiv Jain, was rushed to the Civil Hospital for treatment. The police was planning to take him to the PGIMR, Chandigarh, or Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, for surgery.
Robbery case solved, 6 held
Ludhiana, March 21
With the arrest of six persons, the city police claimed to have busted a gang of robbers. The accused had allegedly robbed Rs 3 lakh from an employee of a gas agency on February 27.
MC nets Rs 1.9 cr from parking lot auction

In a history of sorts, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation today netted a whopping Rs 1.90 crore from the auction of the parking lot at the city’s business hub — Feroze Gandhi Market. This is the highest ever amount that a MC has ever yielded from the auction of a parking lot.

3 held for sneaking cellpone into jail
Ludhiana, March 21
Three persons, including an inmate of the observation home, were booked for trying to sneak in mobile phones in juvenile home in the Shimlapuri area.
Women helpline launched

The Sidhwan Bet police under Ludhiana (rural) police today launched a women helpline number for protecting them crimes against the women. This women helpline has been launched with the aim of providing better security to the fair sex.

The tall claims of state government of bringing reforms in the education system have fallen flat due to apparent callousness on part of the Punjab School Education Board. A number of students of class XII failed to appear for their Punjabi exam on March 18 as they had to appear for their Maths Examination (compartment) of class X under the "Golden-Chance", at the same time given by the Board. Unable to appear for two exams at the same time, these students would carry a compartment in Punjabi exam in class XII.

1,100 students
conferred degrees in govt college

Annual Convocation of Government College for Girls was held here today. As many as 1100 graduates and Post graduates were conferred degrees in the faculties of arts, science and commerce, including honours degrees in arts and commerce. Sakinder Singh Maluka, Education Minister, Punjab, was the chief guest on the occasion. Principal Gurminder Kaur accorded a warm welcome to the worthy guests and read out the annual report of the college for the session 2012-13 highlighting the achievements in the field of academics, extra-curricular activities and sports.

VAT target goes up by 25 per cent
Ludhiana, March 21
Punjab Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa today announced a Voluntary Compliance Scheme on VAT and excise duty.
VAT target for the state has been increased from Rs 14,900 crore to Rs 17,760 crore which is 25 per cent. Lauding the move, Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner Kanwalpreet Brar said, "The scheme will motivate people to pay the taxes," Brar said.

Suicide bid by woman
Ludhiana, March 21
A woman,who was dumped by her husband nearly two months after their marriage, tried to commit suicide by consuming sedatives.
The woman identified as Shveta was rushed to the Civil Hospital last evening and her condition is stated to be stable. She said she tied the knot with Rajiv Katoch of Himachal Pradesh at a local temple in Jamalpur on November 11. She said after a few months of marriage her husband deserted her.
