Sparkling ritual
If statistics are to be believed, spas worldwide have greater revenues than amusement and theme parks, box-office gross receipts and ski-resorts! What makes it an industry is the complete getaway it offers. What makes it an ‘experience’ is the welcome drink, the foot-bath ritual, selections of aroma oils; the wraps and scrubs options, sound elements like music, flower bath, after session refreshments, special room décor…need we say more?
Pamper yourself From the revamped menus to special summer treats, spas in Chandigarh have a lot in store. Lavender sounds good to begin with. The Oriental Ritual Lavender Spa, at Cleopatra, claims to cool and moisturise at the same time. “In this, we give you a mint wrap, which is a blend of milk and marine salts. This treatment increases the blood circulation and moisturises the body without making it oily. There are also anti-tan spas and treatment,” says Harveen Kathuria, the clinic manager. Never mind the marital status, for those who want to pamper from deep within, there’s Cleopatra Elixir Royal Bridal Spa. “We start with a herbal drink, which is detoxifying; then move on to marine food soak and Veda hair treatment, followed by full body polishing.” No wonder, a day out at spa makes for some of the most enviable social networking status! At Seven Seas Spa Lounge, there’s stress on the word customisation. Shares Madan, the manager, “We have the entire list segmented into International Spas, Oriental Spas and Indian Ayurvedic Spas. The International spas comprise essential oils while Oriental spas involve the use of techniques and pressure points.” Enjoy their signature spa that claims to combine the best of both worlds. He adds, “We customise a lot of things, right from the oils used to techniques applied. Before a spa is designed for a customer, we check for any problems; skin type and even blood pressure.” Now & then Every property worth its name has to have a spa to begin with. A place where you go to relax, detox and improve your well-being. “Our weekends are jam-packed. It’s only Monday mornings and office hours that are not crowded; most of the people that walk in for a spa are looking for a relaxing experience,” says Reena, the manager, Aura Thai Spa. And for those who travel a lot, it’s a must. She adds, “All the massages that we offer are from Thailand. There are dry therapies that are perfect for summer.” At Zivaya, the spa at Pride KC Royal Park, choose from body therapies from around the world, including Royal Siam and the Javanese Pampering, apart from what they call ‘the healing journeys’. About two decades back, we discovered the word spa and there’s been no looking back since then. Laughs Harveen Kathuria, “Nowadays, even when people go to the gym followed by a steam bath, they use the word spa. It is most exploited, but it is also the most resorted to.” manpriya@tribunemail.com
Destination luxury
There’s never a unanimous or exhaustive list of the best spas in the world, but here are some of the popular destinations. Como Shambhala They say it’s the place where Donna Karan comes to rest and rejuvenate. The spectacular spa in Bali also has a resident psychologist. Sense, The Carlyle The spa at this Rosewood Hotel in New York is the epitome of luxury. Think chandeliers at the reception and a glittering staircase leading up to the place. Sha Wellness Centre It is one of the spas with a view. The regime at this spa in Alicante, Spain, centres on anti-ageing and promotes macrobiotic therapies.

Brothers in rhythm
It’s very seldom that two siblings create a symphony that borders on the sublime. In the case of brothers Madhusudan Barman and Gopal Barman, well-known for their tabla-sreekhol jugalbandi, every note that emanates from their respective instruments is music to the soul, literally.
The percussionists from Kolkata, in Chandigarh to delight the audience at the Tagore Theatre as part of 43rd Pracheen Kala Kendra Nritya and Sangeet Sammelan, are truly classical in every sense of the word. Musical world Hailing from a family of musicians, it was but natural that that Madhu and Gopal were born with a legacy. The rest was honed and chiselled through sincere hardwork and riyaaz over a number of years. From the very childhood, the duo was inspired by their father, late Barendramohan Barman, who was a music lover and a known instrumentalist. Once the interest germinated, it soon got translated into a passion under the guidance of their Guru Pandit Sankar Ghosh. “Interestingly, I refrained myself from sreekhol in the beginning thinking it was only for kirtans. However, once I understood the complexity of the instrument, I fell in love with it,” says Gopal. Bonding together A smile they always wear on their faces and a progressive attitude they always carry on their sleeves. “We are glad to be together in this expedition. Through thick and thin, we complement, support and strengthen each other,” says Madhu. Albeit they are brothers through ties of blood, music is more of a bonding factor for them. While the elder brother Madhu is an expert at the tabla, Gopal specialises in sreekhol, which is basically a traditional instrument used for folk and devotional music. The brothers have combined the two instruments to create a niche of their own and established themselves among the best exponents of classical arts. “Fusion is becoming a fad and with it we are able to reach out to a larger audience,” says Madhu. Growing talent Today, the duo is internationally recognised. Celebrating their achievement and hoping to woo the city audience, they echo, “It’s been a long time since we last visited Chandigarh, but the city is as beautiful as we remember it.” Proud of being titled as the ‘Sangeet Visharads’ of Pracheen Kala Kendra, they add, “It’s a great opportunity for talent across the country. We are lucky to have made it to the event here.” Classical thought “Classical is the root of music. More importantly, it’s our tradition. With all the intricacies and depth involved, mostly people think it’s hard to imbibe. Well, what isn’t?” says Gopal.

Sometimes a stark digression of thought is all that is needed to stir the composed exterior of wisdom. As Atish Mukhopadhyay, a Kolkata-based musician and sarod player, engages in an intellectual combat that chases the rich lineage of Indian classical music, he discusses various ways that could redeem its fading sheen. The young artist was in Chandigarh to perform a sarod recital with his band, Maihar, at the Panjab University on Tuesday.
A classical interlude "Sarod suffices for all that is needed to execute classical music. Also, I can play any kind of music on sarod, including jazz. A long time back, I forwarded an application to the New England Conservatory, Boston, thereby claiming that sarod be used for jazz. I wanted to pursue a Ph D course in sarod on that subject, but due to family obligations, I could not continue with the same," said Atish. He added, "I also play rabab, but not the Persian rabab. I like the dhrupad rabab because it's a rare instrument and I want to revive it." Critical acclaim Atish has performed across the globe, including Uzbekistan, Russia and USA. "However, some of my most distinguished performances were delivered at the International Music Fest in Uzbekistan. Also, International Music Fest at St Pertesberg was incredible," shares Atish. Music and culture Atish makes no attempt to sugar-coat his views about the global decline of classical music that resonates in the roots of one's tradition and culture. "I think that the government must take a serious stance when it comes to educating the youth about their music and culture. Music should be made a compulsory subject and the students must be acquainted with the history of music. Only then will the classical music retain its character and essence," he signs off.

Warm up first
Before starting any physical activity like yoga, dance, pilates or gyming, you have most likely heard your instructors telling you to warm up before the main exercise. But many people just ignore the instructions and skip the warm up part.
They avoid warm up session because of lack of time or it's just that they do not understand the importance of it. I would say a warm up session is so important that you cannot avoid it because of lack of time, but because of lack of awareness. Prevents injury There is a direct connection between warm up and injury prevention. A good warm-up session not only helps you to be prepared mentally and physically for the exercise but also reduce the chances of injury. Warm-up is a slow preparatory activity, such as small movements of joints, a slow jog or a few minutes of low-impact aerobic activity which should be done prior to the main exercise. Blood circulation At physiological level, warm-up session increases the blood circulation in the body which eventually raises both the general body and the muscle temperature. This increased temperature warms the muscles, ligaments and tendons and prepares them for high intensity workout. Warm up with aerobic exercise gradually increases the heart rate as well as the respiratory rate thus ensuring enhanced supply of oxygen to the muscles. Having understood the effect of warm up on the entire body, it is further pertinent to realize the importance of specific warm up. Specific warm up means warming up the particular muscle group before carrying out the intense workout involving them. This way the temperature is more effectively increased in the specific body parts that are to be used. Time frame Now the question is 'how long is the ideal warm-up session'? The answer will be dependent on the type and intensity of the workout, and also the weather conditions. For example, warm up before Power Yoga session should be longer because the intensity of workout is high and it also involves stretching exercise. If one stretches the muscles without proper warm-up, the muscles are cold and are more prone to injury, such as muscle tear or strain. But if the exercise is running then the duration and intensity of the warm up can be less, like a brisk walk or a slow jog for 5 to 10 minutes. Weather is another factor which also decides the duration of the warm up. Your body will take more time for warming up if the weather is cold. So an average of 15 minute Warm up is necessary. I would say it is one of the most important factors in injury prevention. So no matter how much of a hurry you may be in, always take the time to properly warm-up. (Juneja is a Chandigarh-based |

Light up your room
Sukhmani Lighting is often an overlooked piece of the interior design puzzle. Properly planned lighting can transform a room from dark and drab to bright and beautiful. Gone are the days when lighting was a purely functional decision. With the vast selection of designs available today, lighting has become a key part of the overall design scheme. Here are a few lighting trends that you will see in the year 2013: Sculptural lights: These light fixtures combine function and art with unique abstract designs. Sculptural fixtures are usually very detailed and feature unique shapes, accents and colours. Much like the pieces of art, design inspirations for these types of fixtures come from sculptures and other artwork. An elaborate light fixture can be the focal point, whether it's hung over the dining room table, kitchen buffet, or in the foyer. Refined rustic: These are a combination of country meets industry, bringing a modern, urban touch to a comfortable, casual rustic design. This trend brings together rustic finishes with modern shapes, fabrics and accents for a more refined look. Mixed materials: If your style is hard to categorise, a lighting fixture with mixed materials-glass, crystal, metal, wrought-iron -may be the decorating solution you need. Like a vintage broach, a light fixture adds that special touch to each room. Colour infused glass: Fixtures made of solid glass appeal to homeowners with a modern eye for design. Soft, neutral colours accent the room without overwhelming it. Shades: The addition of luxurious fabric shades to elegant chandeliers is like adding an enviable accessory to an already perfect outfit. The result is breathtaking. Fabric shades also soften the glow of the light source, illuminating the room in a warm glow. Crystal: There has been a huge resurgence in crystal lighting over the past couple of years and it continues to grow. Crystal lighting is often associated with expensive, traditional luxury design. Today's crystal designs come in a wide variety of styles that can add glamour to any room--both traditional as well as contemporary. brass: Brass is making a comeback in home decor accessories and lighting for 2013. To avoid creating a dated look, choose pieces that offer contemporary designs. Chrome and polished nickel:: These are going to be the most popular finishes for lighting fixtures in 2013 with homeowners and designers choosing these shiny finishes over their matte, brushed counterparts. Energy efficient: One of the key trends in home lighting in 2013 will be upgrading fixtures to those which save energy. The solution to this is the much coveted LED lighting. Recessed lighting : Aesthetics-wise, 2013 will see a continued trend of the use of recessed lighting as it facilitates better control of light disbursement as well as looks better. Track lighting : This type of lighting is said to be excellent for its flexibility - you can move, swivel, rotate and aim the individual fixtures in any direction along the track, giving you the versatility to change the lighting scheme. Track lighting will continue to be popular in 2013, especially for people who have unique lighting needs. (Sukhmani is a Chandigarh-based interior and landscape designer) |

Anushka to romance Hrithik?
If the latest buzz to be believed then actress Anushka Sharma will romance Hrithik Roshan in Shekhar Kapur’s much-awaited Paani. Reportedly, Paani is Shekhar Kapur’s dream project, which revolves around a future world where water wars have broken out, and water is owned by international corporations who use thirst as a weapon of control. The poster of the film Paani will bear the message, “2040 AD, when the well runs dry. We will realise the worth of Paani.” However, Kapur denied approaching her for the role. “Anushka Sharma is an outstanding actress and I would love to work with her. But there’s been no talk with her on Paani," he said. |

From shy to funky
Prachi Desai has the image of a shy Indian girl. She surprised us all with her funky hair avatar in the song Kisike Haath Na Aayega from the movie I, Me Aur Main. She had a baby doll avatar in the movie too. She talks about her new image.
Surprise element When I first saw the song, Kisike Haath Na Aayega, I was surprised at how different I looked. It was not outwardly sexy but still funky. My character in it is quite similar to what I am in real life. I have a naughty side, I am chirpy, light-hearted, and love having fun with my friends. It helped me show a different side of myself. Looking good When one is the limelight, we have to look good 24X7 and the people who help us do that become our family because we spend so much time with them. My hairstylist is Tina and now she is my friend. I feel the hairstylist community is very trendy and passionate about their work which shows in their looks, clothes, and tattoos and body language. Hair care I feel my hairstyle in Rock On gave me a new image. I like to wear my hair in braids be it mermaid braid or plain messy knots or a ponytail. I even like up-dos and buns which are great when you hair does not feel soft and shiny.

Tamannah’s dreams
Tamannah Bhatia is a North Indian girl who made it big down South. She also starred in the remake of Jab We Met. Her actual Bollywood debut film sank without a trace. So, Himmatwala is her mainstream debut in Bollywood. She talks about her Bollywood dreams.
Variety work I am looking at good work. I wouldn’t do an art film for the heck of it because we make films for people to watch and appreciate. What is the point if no one watches the movie? An actor’s popularity depends on the audiences. I want to a variety of roles. Pick & choose I got many offers for Hindi films in the past but I chose the Himmatwala remake because that was something I personally would have liked to watch. There is a lot of positive energy on the sets of the movie and that will show on screen. So, that way I am choosy. Media support When you are in the public eye, controversies are a part and parcel of your life. We cannot do anything about it even if the controversies are baseless. Fortunately for me, the media has been supportive. I communicate with my fans through the media as I am not on any social networking site. Character and changes My character is the same as Sridevi’s in the original but there are many changes in the film. Sajid’s focus is commercial entertainment for families for three hours. Rick Roy has worked hard on the costumes to make them authentic to the 1980s. Future plans My next film is with Akshay Kumar and I am super excited because I have never met him and he is such an amazing star! I am a big fan of his. It is produced by Tips. I couldn’t have asked for more.

Jolly good show
Jolly LLB has become the surprise hit of last weekend as the film has collected nearly Rs13 crore so far. Mere Dad Ki Maruti got good reviews but the collections have been good only in the North. The budget of MDKM has been recovered through the car brand tie-up. We hope that good word-of-mouth increases the collections of both movies. 3G has been a washout with no hope for redemption.

Sizeable opinion
Raveena Tandon Thadani feels today’s actresses are too thin and when they dance, it looks like two dandiyas are dancing. She says she is happy with her healthy size. She should realise that these girls are almost half her age and have a burning desire to make it in the limelight.

Sridevi, Anil Kapoor team up again!
Twenty seven years has passed since Mr India had captured the imagination of Indians, but the Mr India legacy just doesn’t seem to fade. Sridevi, who created waves with her comeback in English Vinglish and Anil Kapoor, one of India’s global stars, have confirmed their presence in the sequel to the cult film.
That’s not all. Fans will also be delighted to experience the magic of Mr India in Manmohan Shetty’s ambitious theme park - Adlabs Imagica. However, the most interesting part is that Sridevi and Anil Kapoor have lent their voices for the project. “Sridevi, Anil Kapoor and Satish Kaushik (who played Calendar in the film) recorded lines for our ride. We are using the popular line ‘Mogambo khush hua'. Besides, we have worked on an entirely new story and dialogues for the ride which aren’t similar to the ones in the film. Everyone, including Sridevi and Anil, have been excited to be part of the project," informs Aarti Shetty, creative director, Adlabs Entertainment Ltd. About the concept behind the ride, she says, “Basically, the simulator ride will give fans a chance to team up with Mr India, Seema and a robotic version of Mr India to take on one of the greatest villains of all time - Mogambo. Since Mr India was an iconic film, audiences will immediately identify with it," says Shetty. The amusement park will take some time before it opens its doors to the public. “Right now, the ride is in its testing stage. If all goes well, the theme park and the ride will be functional in a few months’ time," adds Aarti. The ride has been made using 6 Doff technology and it has nine cars that can accommodate 144 members.

The winds of change
Arhaan Behl gained much popularity after portraying Krishna in Pratigya. The reticent actor is anticipating a change of pace as he will be hosting Fear Factor on Big RTL Thrill.
What do you feel about your new show? I've been watching Fear factor regularly and it feels great to be associated with it. While hosting the show, I will present the Indian perspective of the series, which will be a mix of the seasons that are aired in UK, USA and Russia. Is it true that you made an entry at a press conference in a chopper? Yes, and it was very filmi indeed. I guess the promotion of the show called for a grand presentation. Knowing that you would not have any interaction with contestants, why did you choose to anchor the show? I took it up because it was different. Moreover, after acting in a daily soap, hosting a stunt-based show is refreshing. We will shoot in different locations, which will be exciting for audiences to watch. Will you be doing any stunts? No, I won't. How did you feel when your show, Pratigya, ended? I think it ended at the right time and I've been relaxing since. Though I have a few offers for TV shows, but I will take up something that excites me. I want to do quality work. We hear rumours that there will be a sequel for Pratigya, are you going to be a part of it? Yes, they approached me for the same, but I turned down the offer because it won't be challenging enough to play the same role again. What's next? I have signed a Punjabi film titled Desi Dude and it was great fun for me to shoot that.

Being a chef, his love for food drove him to Tirupathi, where he enjoyed the meal while wearing a lungi like the rest of the community.

Community concerns
Considering the concerns voiced by Sikh organisations, including Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) and Jathedar Akal Takhat Sahib, over the title of its upcoming fiction show Gurbani, Colors has changed the name of the show to Bani-Ishq da Kalma. The channel said, "Colours would never do anything to hurt or disrespect the religious sentiments of any community. In fact the producer of the show is a Sikh herself. Gurbani, the name of the lead protagonist, symbolises what is pure, cultural and spiritual. Gurbani is a girl who lives for everyone but herself. She is the kind of girl who will be an inspiration to all. It is through her that we showcase purity, sacrifice and love, love for family and mankind."
They added, "Our team has travelled across Amritsar and Delhi for promotional activities and no one raised any objections to the show's name then. In fact, we held press conferences in both the cities and the media including the Punjabi press reacted very positively to the show, which can be seen in the positive coverage the show has received. With utmost respect and humility we request the complainants to view Gurbani as merely a name and in context of a fiction show that endeavours to bring a social issue to the fore. However to respect the sentiments of the people, we have decided to change the name of the show."

Your loved one will criticise you for incorrect behavior, which will hurt your self-esteem. Even if usual tasks seem tiring, there will be no lack of interesting occasions. Otherwise, they'll be neck-deep in work at the office. Whereas, it is wise to restore your strength, it is foolhardy to get lazy. If you neglect any urgent matter, it will cost you more in the longer run than you can now possibly imagine. Delegate duties wherever you can and keep the family 'informed' so that no 'bad attitudes' develop. Financial growth is on the cards. So take good care of your health and follow a healthy diet pattern. Mood: Distracted easily and vulnerable Compatible signs: Gemini, Sagittarius Lucky colours: Yellow Lucky days: Tuesday and Sunday. You share your birthday with Rani Mukherjee (March 21, 1978), who made a debut with a supporting role in a Bengali film, Biyer Phool (1992). She began a full-time career in Bollywood with Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat and subsequently featured in Karan Johar's, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), which won her a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. She won her first Filmfare Critics Award for her work in Saathiya. Bunty Aur Babli, No One Killed Jessica and Talaash are some of her recent films.
