Demolition drive: MC under fire

Despite opposition from temple committee, MC remains steadfast
Ludhiana, March 20
Although the management committee of a temple situated in Talaab Bazaar has announced it would not allow the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation to carry out a demolition drive scheduled tomorrow, the MC officials are steadfast on the issue.

Local industry feels ignored

The Budget announced by state Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa has left the local industry high and dry. Nothing was announced for the industrial sector, which, in actual, is the backbone of the state. The long-pending demands of setting up an exhibition centre in the city and the abolition of VAT on cycles have not been met.

With the state Finance Minister abolishing the value added tax (VAT) on items used by children and announcing various schemes for them, including free tablets for Class XI students, it was a welcome budget for them.

Sipping a bottle of soft drink or puffing a cigarette will now cost more as the value added tax (VAT) has been increased on soft drinks from 13 per cent to 20.5 percent and on cigarettes from 20.5 percent to 50 per cent, with an additional 10 per cent charge.

The city police has a reason to rejoice as the state government has given the go-ahead for the Safe City project to be initiated in the city. The state government, in its annual Budget announced today, aims to spend Rs 135 crore on this project.

GLADA auctions 6 residential plots for Rs 4.45 crore

The Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) today sold through public auction six residential plots in Dugri Phase II for Rs 4,45,65,000 at a premium of around 26 per cent over the reserve price of Rs 3.54 crore.

Acid thrown on two women
Ludhiana, March 20
A jilted lover threw acid on a woman after she objected to his visit to her house. The woman's maid also suffered burn injuries in the incident. The duo was rushed to the Civil Hospital. They have suffered burns on the face, neck and hands.
