Flower growers face losses as hailstorm wreaks havoc
Jammu, March 19 Areas affected include RS Pura, Marh, Nagrota, Katal-Batal, Dhok Wazira villages and several areas in Kathua and Samba districts. “Losses are heavy and farmers are also not getting expected yield. It has affected the profit margin as the rates are linked to the quality of the flower,” said Tejinder
Singh, president Flower Growers Association. Singh said farmers were also not expecting any help from the government. “It costs Rs 2,000 per kanal to cultivate flower plants but the compensation is provided at the rate of Rs 200 per
kanal. There is pick and choose policy at every stage, which is quite discouraging for the cultivators,” he said. A cultivator from RS
Pura, Ranjit Kumar said, “It has changed our life as the profits are high but this year we have not got the desired yield as the flowers are small due to the hailstorm. Over recent years, huge profit margin from farming has raised the economic status of hundreds of families who have invested in this sector.” At present 400 people are associated with flower cultivation in the state and products worth Rs 2 crore are exported annually. Jammu is spread over an area of 1 lakh sq km with and net cropped area of 3.86 lakh hectares. Farmers usually grow maize, wheat, paddy, vegetables and fodder, but under the concept of crop diversification programme, the government is encouraging the cultivation of flowers over recent years. Around 700 hectares of land is under the cultivation of marigold, jasmine, aster, rose, chrysanthemum and tuberose in the state. Growers feel the shortage of infrastructure to process flowers as the state does not have cold storage facilities, refrigeration vans and green houses and the cultivation process is still very old making it difficult for the cultivators to reach out to the international market. bunch of trouble
