Bhagat Singh's house seeks attention
Our Correspondent

Nawanshahr, March 19
Though the construction work of a new museum at Khatkar Kalan, ancestral village,of Sardar Bhagat Singh, is going on, the martyr's house as well as the park set up adjoining the house are in dire need of proper upkeep.

The foundation stone of the new complex of the museum was laid by then Union Tourism Minister, Ambika Soni.

Besides, the construction of the museum, Khatkar Kalan was to be developed as a tourist complex under the project. But the project was started at the fag end of the previous year. Earlier, a beautiful park was set up near the ancestral house of the martyr at a cost of Rs 1crore in 2005. But it has been lying in a neglected state for want of proper funds. Even, the electricity bills of the park have not been paid for the past two years.

Amolak Singh, president, Lok Sabhyacharak Morcha, and convenor Desh Bhagat Yadhgaar Committee, Jalandhar, said here today that though the government had been spending crores on developing Khatkar Kalan into a tourist spot yet nothing was being done to preserve the martyr's ancestral house. "It is a pity that his ancestral house which has historical importance is lying in a neglected state",he said. Kashmira Singh Nihang, president of Shaheed Bhagat Singh sports Club, Khatkar Kalan said several requests had been turned deaf ears by the state government.

"The political leaders belonging to both the SAD-BJP alliance and the Congress make big promises every year on the occasion of martyrdom day on March 23 but forget afterwards", lamented Nihang.
