PLSA raises legal awareness among school students
Tribune News Service

Faridkot, February 25
Piqued by the increasing rate of sexual abuses, particularly against the minor girls, and the crimes perpetrated by children and teenagers, the Punjab Legal Service Authority (PLSA) is imparting moral and legal education to school students with an aim to make them a responsible and law abiding citizens.

After establishing the Students Legal Literacy Clubs in all government high and senior secondary schools and selecting 25 students in a school as its member, the PLSA is organising seminars and meetings in the schools, educating the students to desist from the attitude or behaviour that brings them face to face with law, and also to make use of their legal rights at the time of need.

While teaching law to the students, the PLSA is not relying on an official format and is conducting question-answer sessions.

Students raise queries relating to their routine problems which they encounter in their social and family life, said Surinder Sachdeva, assistant district attorney, Faridkot.

With a dictum “ignorance of law is no excuse”, the young students are taught law in plain language so that they don't get involved in any act that may jeopardise their future.

The motive of these Legal Literacy Clubs in schools is to bring legal awareness and change in the society.

“In the day-to-day life, we have to confront legal situations. Therefore, it is must for us to know how to take help of law in our favour,” said Rakesh Mittal, secretary, District Legal Service Authority.

“There are laws governing every aspect of life but due to our general ignorance, we continue to bear with many problems. These clubs are educating the young girls and teenagers about the legal provisions and safeguards,” said Archana Puri, District and Sessions’ Judge Faridkot, while addressing girl students in the Government School for Girls in Faridkot.

“Crimes committed against minors leave indelible marks on the victims psyche,” she said.

In the first phase, the legal literacy clubs have been established in all government schools and these clubs are submitting their monthly report to the PLSA.

In the second phase, all private schools will be covered.

The clubs not only let the students understand the difference between real courts and ‘adalats’ that they see in movies or daily soaps, but also where and whom to approach for legal help.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today said that going by the "disappointing" track record of the UPA Government, there was no hope of anything good from the ensuing Union budget.

While talking to the mediapersons after presiding over a Kabaddi tournament here,

Badal said, "The unending saga of discrimination and step-motherly treatment against Punjab and its peasantry is a deliberate attempt to demoralise the state."

The Chief Minister further said that the apathy of the Union government towards Punjab could be well judged from the fact that the industry of the state has been ruined due to incentives provided to the neighboring states and now due to an exorbitant hike in the prices of agricultural inputs, the farmers of the state are in distress.

The Chief Minister said that they had been demanding that the states should be given at least 50 per cent share in the taxes collected from them so as to minimise their dependence on the Centre.

Rail Budget today
Region hopes its long-pending demands will be met

Ferozepur, February 25
It has taken several years for the Railways to bridge a distance of '37 km' between the strategic Khemkaran sector and Ferozepur, which has the potential to shorten the rail journey between Punjab and the distant Gujarat and Maharashtra, the two vital trade destinations, to a great extent. However, now the residents of this area are sanguine that their long-pending demand will be given the green signal during the Rail Budget, which will be presented by Union Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal in the Parliament tomorrow.

"This 37-km-long stretch between the two villages, Mallanwala on Jalandhar-Ferozepur rail track and Rattoke/Patti on the Amritsar-Khemkaran line,-separated with the partition of the country, will herald a new era of prosperity in the region besides the hitherto snapped Amritsar-Ferozepur rail link will be revived," said Ashok Bajaj, a retired ITO, who has written a number of letters to the Railway Ministry in this regard.

The residents are hoping that several other vital rail projects, including Ferozepur-New Delhi Jan Shatabdi via Fazilka and Muktsar, and a direct train between Ferozepur and Haridwar, which have not seen the light of the day, will be put on the fast track.

MLA Parminder Singh Pinki said he along with a delegation of local residents had called on Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal recently, who has assured to look into all long-pending demands.

Former MP Jagmeet Brar has demanded introduction of a new railway line between Kotkapura and Moga besides extension of Sriganganagar- Sri Hazur Sahib train to Ferozepur, Fazilka and Muktsar, and a new train between Sri Muktsar Sahib and Sri Hemkunt Sahib via Haridwar and Rishikesh. — OC
