All that 0jazz
Generally it is the confused accent that bothers…but in this case the beginning was clear, very chaste and pretty much home-like! Gagandeep, the young artist from USA, has no fancy ideas about India, Punjab or music. Making his debut as the music director for Pankaj Batra's next Naughty Jatts, G Deep (as everyone calls him) has some interesting stories to share with us.
What's in a name? It is not unusual for any Punjabi staying abroad to jazz up their name. So when Gagandeep becomes G Deep it isn't startling! “I moved to America when I was nine years old and you know how firangs pronounce a Punjabi name! Besides, my friends would often call me G and so did my producer with whom I started working. This is how I became G Deep. And it's kind of cool,” he laughs. My first “I have known the director of Naughty Jatts for a long time, so when he offered me work I was all for it,” shares G Deep, who has worked with best international artists. G Deep has three songs in the film, which guarantee full-on entertainment. “I understand Punjabi film music has a different taste; all the same, I feel the director hired me because he knows that I understand what Punjabi and NRI Punjabi audiences like in terms of music,” smiles G Deep, excited about his fun-filled track. Spiritual sojourn He is pretty sorted out in his thoughts as well as work. G Deep is god- fearing and doesn't forget to thank his murshid. “I am here because of god and I feel it is his blessings that have still kept me on track. I came out with a spiritual album that re-defined me and brought me closer to existence,” says the music director who currently has three more movies on hand. Actor calling Being an actor comes naturally to a Punjabi singer. “I would love to act, but want to learn first. This is the way I do things - learn first. I like films like Shaheed Bhagat Singh; I am patriotic at heart so would like to do those movies.”

Stay connected
How many times do you find yourself guzzling down beer sitting alone at a bar or maybe watching a cricket match all by yourself? And how many times have you wanted to strike a conversation with a complete stranger at a restaurant? Well, we would have a good number nodding in approval.
If this has been the case, then Chandigarh-based young entrepreneur Abhishek Gupta has an answer to it. No he isn't setting you up for blind dates, but he provides you with an all new application Mink Me that makes conversation real quick! A Masters in Management from the Harvard University, Abhishek returned from the US last year. “I was sitting at a bar alone and thinking what is that one way through which I can connect to people in my city or people with same interests really fast. This is how Mink Me came into being,” he spreads the technical facts clearly. A really quick way of connecting application Mink Me is available on Android and Apple, and already has as many as 300 users in America. What's the story behind the name we wonder? “Fairly simple; it is something like Wink Me, but not everyone would have been comfortable with this name so we kept Mink Me,” shares this entrepreneur, who has a lot of plans for his application. “Mink Me has a separate ID; through the application you can see people who are sending you messages, but there is no notification for it. You can easily pick and choose the people you want to talk to,” adds Abhishek. Mink Me is an application that has been created to connect people in your city, in your building; those who share the same interests. Says Abhishek, “Moods is a feature that places Mink Me in a category of its own and allows you to set your mood, so that your friend is always there to share your happiness as well as sorrows. The app also allows you to connect to people from your area. One can see who is visible and wants to connect with you from the same location. The service has been aptly named Really Close.” Another option available in Mink Me is the 'Mink ID' to stay in touch with friends and peers without disclosing your identity. “In this, one can even hide his or her cell-phone number,” says Abhishek, who will be adding more features to the application. “We will be bringing this application on Blackberry once it catches up,” he smiles, checking for updates on his laptop. The icing on the cake is Minker: which helps you stay updated on Mink Me App updates related to new features, releases, events and parties. jasmine@tribunemail.com

RAP & roll
Once upon a time every Punjabi singer dreamt of releasing their tracks on foreign soil. The trend has just reversed; international artists of Punjabi origin are choosing their 'homeland' to not only release, but also create a big fan base.
The latest one to join the bandwagon is GOP Virk, an international rapper born in UK and brought up in New York. He hits Chandigarh for the promotion of his single Kee Gal. Before the talks of how, when, where and why get rolling, we needed to sort a small query regarding the name GOP. “My name is Gurvinder and my nickname is Gopi, so friends started calling me GOP,” he shrugs his shoulders. An answer we pretty much expected! Kee Gal…it is Gop's turn to do more explaining. “This is my new single which is already popular. It features Punjabi film actress Neetu Singh as the model. The video was shot in Punjab, Jagraon,” adds this rapper who had a clear reason for shooting the single in Punjab. “My friends back in Punjab would ask me to come here and so did my fans. Besides, my music always has an Indian element. So, this time I decided to shoot it in Punjab.” GOP is a rapper who has done collaborations with Juggy D and Dr Zeus. What separates his rap from the ones that we hear in Punjab? “I have a style of my own. The kind of rap I hear in Punjab is more or less the same,” he says. Does that mean very Bohemian style, talking about guns or drugs? He smiles, “A rapper or for that matter any artist can convey his or her feelings through their work if it is based on personal feelings. This is what inspires me as well. I always liked music and did not have any 'desi' influence when I was growing up. However, I still retained the element of bhangra, hip and hop in my style. You can smell desi flavours.” GOP plans to shoot his second single in Punjab too and do the must-happen-act in Punjabi films! “You never know, I might. As of now I am busy with the promotion of Kee Gal, which is a mix of east and west flavours,” shares the rapper, who wants to work with Gurdas Maan. For someone who wants to be close to his roots, this is definitely a thanks-giving! At the same time, it gives him a chance to peek into the evolving music scene in Punjab.

On the panel
Sukhmani Wainscot is a panelling applied to the lower 2' to 5' of an interior wall. It runs along the lower sections of the walls of a room, similar to an over-sized baseboard trim. Wainscot instantly adds character, style and a sense of history to a home. Installing these elements also enhances the architectural decor of any room. It is a great option for adding architectural and dimensional details to a space without having to make elaborate structural changes. In our modern age of minimalism, it's hard to imagine the use of any interior detailing, associated with earlier eras. The word "wainscot" immediately brings up images of traditional Victorian interiors with massive chandeliers and overstuffed furniture with ruffles. But by using simplified lines, and doing away with flowery ornament, wainscoting can be right at home in a modern home. Selecting a style: It is important to select a style that matches your decor type. For example, in a sleek, modern-style living room, wainscoting with simple, linear horizontal borders would work well, while wainscoting with lavish ornamentation and complex patterns would work well in a traditional setup. Wainscoting panels were traditionally made of wood, like oak, which gave the walls a very rich and cozy look. In today's interior designing, these wainscoting panels are made of a number of other materials, for ease of installation and low cost values. You can use a traditional wainscot with sleek and modern furniture to achieve a beautiful blend of the old and new. Height: Most wainscotings are installed between 32 and 36 inches above the level of the floor. As a general decorating rule, you should match the height of the wainscoting you use to the height of the room. In a room with low ceilings, stick with short wainscoting; otherwise, your walls may appear cluttered and space cramped. For rooms with higher ceilings, use taller wainscoting, as it will help anchor your space. The wainscot must always be less than half of the height of the wall. Colour: Wood tones and shades of white are the safest and most common options. However, you can use darker colours provided you use a light, neutral shade for the rest of the walls in your space. Avoid bright and ornate wallpapers, as they, in combination with the wainscoting, will make your walls appear busy and overbearing. Modern wainscoting consists of tongue-and-groove boards used on the lower section of a wall. The top edge is trimmed with moulding to create a stunning and distinct break on an otherwise plain surface. Stairways are an excellent and overlooked place where designing with wainscoting can achieve new heights. The pattern of choice is one of smaller vertical pieces of wood bordered on top by molding that reflects the height and slope of the post railing. Outsmarting time
Nishtha Anand Just when we thought technology was reaching its plateau, companies such as Apple, Samsung and Motorola seem to be working hard on giving us a watch that will practically know well, our heartbeats! Phones and tablets are passé for tech lovers. They are now waiting for a gadget that will become part of their daily routine-the smartwatch. Gadget or assistant Smartwatches, as they have come to be known, will work like a virtual assistant for you. They will be able to make calls on your behalf, check for missed calls, give you social media updates and even monitor your heart rate while you jog. With the smartwatch, companies will be able to bring the browser to your wrist. Let's see what the existing ones do: Sony Smartwatch The smartwatch from Sony can initiate calls, can text pre-saved messages, view status updates and messages and suggest music. It also uses a training app to monitor your heart rate and launch a countdown clock. This is as good as it gets. MOTOACTV This smartwatch is a boon for the fitness conscious. It is able to monitor your heart rate, calories, lap time and pace. The GPS on the watch also tracks the distance of your run. It comes with a smart music player to play just the right music for your workout. You can also take calls with this one! I'm Watch This one was developed by an Italian start-up. And boy, it stands every chance against the smartwatches I have suggested above. I'm Watch has better features than the Sony Smartwatch or MOTOACTV. For instance, it has the ability to check emails and social media updates, dial calls for you, set up appointments and provide music of your choice. What to expect? With three leading players in technology lurking around there is a lot of excitement for the tech guzzlers out there. (Nishtha is a Chandigarh-based technology expert) |

Iron out those wrinkles
Dr Alka Dogra Ageing is the decline in the power of self-maintenance, the increase in susceptibility to disease and the growing probability of death as age advances. Ageing skin droops and develops wrinkles, lines and furrows. The severity of these changes in an individual depends on one's genetic tendency, skin type and exposure to environmental factors. Dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons often use Glogau's classification when describing these ageing changes. Mild: Few wrinkles, requires little or no make-up for coverage. Moderate: Early wrinkles, sallow complexion, requires little makeup. Advanced: Persistent wrinkling, skin dis-colouration with broken blood vessels and solar keratoses. Wear make up to hide it. Severe: Severe wrinkling and furrows, solar keratoses. Wear make-up but it may not hide the ageing changes. How do facial lines and wrinkles form? Facial lines and wrinkles (rhytides) form because of the following factors like Ageing processes, sun damage, muscle movement, gravity, injury, surgery, acne, smoking and other skin diseases with a tendency to scar. There is often a degree of asymmetry to the lines, as people tend to smile or frown more on one side than the other, or consistently sleep on the right or the left cheek. Fine lines: Fine lines and wrinkles arise because of irregular thickening of the dermis and because of a decrease in the amount of water held by the epidermis. This is mainly caused by sun damage and exposure to environment toxins such as tobacco smoke. Furrows: Deeper lines or furrows are classified as dynamic or static. Dynamic lines appear with movement i.e. the activity of facial muscles. Static lines are unchanged with muscle movement. Eventually dynamic lines become static.
What to do
Remarkable changes in facial appearance can be obtained, giving a younger appearance and improving complexion. Often combinations of different cosmetic procedures are required for the best results. It is most important to protect the skin from the sun life-long using sunscreens on exposed areas daily, and to avoid smoking and exposure to passive smoking or other pollutants. Anti-ageing formulas
Many face creams may include so-called anti-ageing ingredients. These may include anti-oxidants and or exfoliants including:
With the exception of the topical retinoids, the effectiveness of many of these anti-ageing ingredients is unproven. Moisturisers
Ageing skin feels and looks better when moisturizers are applied regularly. These improve the water holding capacity of the skin. Choose one that feels nice to apply, doesn't sting or burn or provoke acne.
Resurfacing
Resurfacing refers to various techniques in which the top layers of the epidermis are peeled off using chemical or mechanical means. They can improve fine lines and static furrows but have no effect on dynamic lines. There are different types of resurfacing:
Other modalities include implantation (temporary or permanent fillers or grafts), botulinum toxin which is a temporary method i.e. 6 months and cosmetic surgery. (Dr Dogra is a Ludhiana-based skin specialist) --As told to Poonam Bindra

Enjoy the journey
Simmi Waraich I have been married for seven years and have two children. My in-laws are quite demanding but my husband is understanding. I try to go out of my way and do all the work. However, I also want to pursue my masters degree. My in-laws say there is no need to study further as there is no need to work. I have lately started feeling stressed. I feel I may get any disease that someone else has or I read about. Monika, Chandigarh First see why you wish to do masters and M Phil. Is it just for your own self or do you want to work later? If you want to work, rather than studying for MA and then M Phil where it will take another four years to get a job, there is something else that you could do, like B.Ed or NTT etc. If you are quite sure you wish to do MA and M Phil, then go ahead. At times, we cannot please everyone around us so if your husband is supportive, be patient even if your in-laws criticize you and slowly set up a system at home where most of your work is done in the morning. Slowly make the children independent like making their bags, polishing their shoes, etc- It's okay to study further but enjoy the journey too. It should not be that you worry about that constantly and in the meantime miss out on your life now. Have some playtime or easy time with your children too. I get very anxious and do not get along well with boys my own age. I don't trust people. I also do not get along with my parents and brother much. As a child I faced sexual abuse from another boy older than me and I did not tell anyone. Now, I am confused as I get attracted to both men and women physically. Is there something wrong with me? Vineet, Chandigarh Since you have said that you have a problem getting along with people and do not trust them that may be maintaining and exaggerating your problems. Also facing sexual exposure at a young age leads to an early awareness of one's sexuality and at times a person may be attracted to both sexes. Many people are bisexual. However, I would suggest that you get a full evaluation, including a personality test, by a trained psychologist and then get regular psychotherapy in order to get more comfortable with yourself. That can also help in building up your relationship with your family so that whatever differences you had are put behind. (Waraich is a Chandigarh-based psychiatrist) |

Leading by example
Pop sensation Lady Gaga did not let her hip injury get in the way of fulfilling a promise she made to a terminally-ill fan. Gaga was forced to cancel her Born This Way Ball tour earlier this week after she was diagnosed with synovitus, a severe inflammation of the joints, and she is likely to undergo a surgery for it too, reported a publication. However, she made sure not to cancel a scheduled meet-and-greet with five-year-old Kaylee Gurbynski, who has an inoperable heart condition. Gaga flew down to Illinois for a surprise visit. "She (Gaga) can't do the show due to joint pain. She can barely walk herself and in spite of the fact that there's no show, she made an effort to meet Kaylee. I've never seen that happen in my history of being in radio," said local radio personality Tony Waitekus, who helped arrange the visit. "It just goes to show that no matter what you say about some of these stars, many of them do have huge hearts and put them to good use sometimes, and that happened here. She did the right thing, and she did it because she wanted to do it. I just can't say enough about her for doing that," Waitekus added. — PTI Inner beauty: Lady Gaga |

No awards for Sridevi!
Sridevi was absolutely brilliant in English Vinglish. The makers and many others expected her to sweep the awards this year but that has not happened, to the shock and dismay of fans and critics. Sridevi has definitely been sidelined at the awards this year despite a smashing performance in a wonderful movie.
A source says, "Sridevi felt she had an edge and an advantage. Karisma Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit's comebacks Dangerous Ishq and Aaja Nachle were disasters. Her movie was met with unprecedented success critically and commercially. So the team of English Vinglish has been shocked that the film has hardly won any awards. It has been a clean sweep for Vidya Balan with her pregnant act in Kahaani." The source continues, "Actresses like Kareena Kapoor to Karisma Kapoor and Deepika Padukone were rooting for Sridevi to win because they adore the veteran star and also her performance in the movie. They have expressed their shock."

Vivek’s new avatar
Vivek Oberoi will now don a new role as he debuts as a judge on Zee's show, India's Biggest Dramebaaz (IBD). Vivek will be seen judging the acting skills of kids on the show.
Why did you accept this show? I had gone to meet the head of Zee TV to work out a way to promote my upcoming film on their channel when they told me about this show. I love kids and this concept really interested me. Soon we worked out the modalities. Also, the co-judges, Sonali Bendre and Anurag Basu, were very understanding as they were on the show before I came along, yet at times, they adjusted their dates because I was in the middle of promotions and shooting for my films. This was indeed an emotional decision for me. How was it an emotional decision for you? My father (Suresh Oberoi) made his television debut with Zee in a show called Dastaan years ago and now I am making my TV debut with IBD. It's a big deal. What is the purpose of this show? Kids who come on the show will not only get a chance to showcase their talent, but it will boost their confidence also. Moreover, there's a winner's prize at the end of it. Would you want your son to be part of such shows? Yes, if he's interested and inclined towards acting, then I would definitely say yes.

The year ahead
If your birthday is February 18...
Finally, you have achieved what you desired. Its time for you to now maintain what you have built. You'll be able to enjoy this phase by slowing down and simplifying your life. You are fascinating and sensual so, it'll be easy for you to conquer others and start a new relationship if you are single. As far as investment matters are concerned, except January 2013 to March 2013, other months will be quite good for parking money. However, take a wise decision and think logically before investing. You are energised and inspired creatively and emotionally on birthday. You express yourself more freely, playfully, and spontaneously. Moreover, you are willing to take chances. The dramatic and performing arts, sports and games, or other forms of self-expression and entertainment appeal strongly to you now. Meanwhile, disappointment in a business associate and/or the realisation that you have been neglecting your own needs and doing more work than someone else on a project arises now. You may feel put-upon, neglected and under-appreciated. Perhaps you are sacrificing your personal life for the sake of achievements or to meet responsibilities. You get more real and serious as March begins. Open-mindedness is a tremendous business asset. Get out ahead of the curve and find the thinking and/or methodologies that are relevant; bring it back and present it and voila, you're a star. After July, things will pick up positively. The wind favours you and you'll finally feel in harmony with those around you. If you work independently, you'll be favoured by fate, especially if you work in the field of medicine, psychology or paramedics. Avoid contact with Leos. Trust your gut feelings. Also, you must get rid of the negative signals that you are giving to yourself. 2013 is going to be a mixture of many feelings and experiences all at once. Your success at work place will take you to the cloud 9. Mood: Angry
