Hip Hip(py) hurray
There is something about the 70s. And to recreate the magic, you might have to pull out an old pair of John Lennon-framed goggles from the most cherished belongings in your parents' closet. Let's look at it through the translucent sepia-coloured glass; it's a peculiar sort of brown study that will lead you on to a better understanding of the era. The first that comes to notice, during the delightful chase down the memory lane, are the bell-bottom pants and the beautiful fringes, which compliment the brown ringlets. The 70's emerged fresh out of the socio-political commotion across the globe that stirred the aching need for revolution and peace, thereby the ideology — 'power to the people'.
The decade witnessed the rebels of a sort — the Hippies. The sentiment of peace during the 70s finds a resounding cry in the second decade of the 20th century in terms of both social and political democracy. Perhaps that reasons the urban hippie's fashion statement. Be it the harem pants that took over the fashion choice of the youth a few years ago or the loose natural-blown heavy curls with fringes, we are heading rapidly to the 70s when it comes to fashion. "Hippies have a very individualistic approach to dressing up that translates into their ideology. It essentially involves a lot of local elements, including the silhouettes, wooden jewellery, unkempt hair and needless to say, the loose pyjamas," says Nida Mahmood, a Mumbai-based designer. She adds, "The best way to pull out a hippy look is to wear a pair of zouave pants with a floral tee that compliments the flower power era. The main idea is to feel relaxed." Aryana Vala, whose proximity with the hippies is distinct, says, "We love colours and loose clothes. Also, long flowing hair is the way to hippy fashion. However, I believe that more than fashion, hippie culture is about cult. You either are a hippie or you are not." Raoul Lornie, a city-based photographer, adds, "Being hippie is a non-conformist's language that's translated into fashion. It is not a matter of dress, behaviour or economic status. Rather, it's a very philosophical approach to life that stems from the idea of freedom, love and peace. Hippie clothing is earth clothing; it has nothing to do with the production lines or designer wear. One can wear a lot of colour, head bands and beaded necklaces to support the look." Amit Kashyap, a Delhi-based designer, opines, "Hippies are all about being different, colourful and interestingly, most of them convey the idea of being natural through their clothing, which is either cotton during summer and woollen ponchos with loose pants during winters. They are intact with culture of the places they visit and it reflects in their vagabond look." Hippy fashion finds its roots in the culture that is essentially related to peace and love; it is a way of life that an individual opts for. It finds close proximity with nature and being natural never fades out of fashion. It defies all barriers that Oscar Wilde talks about when he refers to fashion as ugly and so intolerable that we have to change it every six months! Here's the seventies, embrace it or leave it, the truth is that you can never ignore it. amarjot@tribunemail.com

The voice lives on...
If only seeing is believing, anybody who did not have the good fortune to attend a Jagjit Singh concert would actually never understand the magic he cast on his audience! Ask those who had the pleasure to be a part of one such concert and they would not need to try hard to recollect every moment. It resurfaces from the sub-conscious to the conscious mind naturally, just at the mention of Jagjit Singh's name! What follows are instances of how beautifully he sang, the ghazals he picked up for a particular concert, how people regaled every moment they spent listening to him and how the music weaved magic around them.
Jagjit Singh's birth anniversary on Friday is the perfect occasion to remember him. People from Chandigarh who knew him personally share anecdotes of the times spent with him. The morning prayer of the Strawberry Fields School has been composed by Jagjit Singh, forming an eternal connection with him even after his demise. Atul Khanna, director of the Durga Das Foundation, fondly remembers him, "Even children connected to his style of singing, which is usually thought of as the privilege of true music lovers." Sensitive to all causes that the Foundation supported, Atul recalls how Jagjit used to give him surprise calls in the morning, "He often called just to ask when you are inviting me for a meaningful cause." His ghazal Tere Aane Ki Jab Khabar Aayi tops the list of Atul's favourites. The maestro's ghazals beautifully expressed the most profound human emotions, love and sorrow, which is why his work has immortalised him. For someone like Kamal Tewari, who knew him for almost 45 years, his voice had depth that nobody else from his generation or even the present can match. "I was lucky enough to sing with him in the Kurukshetra University where we were together in 1964-65. Later in 1977, we sang together at a concert that was dedicated to Shiv Kumar Batalvi. We kept on meeting every now and then; he was always the humble ghazal singer." What made Jagjit Singh different from other singers was the fact that it wasn't his genre of music that made him popular; rather it was the other way round. Jagjit Singh single-handedly made people fall in love with ghazals. The effect was such that many filmmakers, besides the popular forms of music, began including a ghazal in their music albums. "He still remains our role model and will always be so," Kamal adds. If his fans world-wide are one measure of his popularity, another is that he held concerts on at least 300 days in a year! Dr SK Punia from Chandigarh, Jagjit’s close friend, recollects the four o'clock poetry sessions. "Poetry was as much his love as ghazals. He always wanted an excuse to visit Chandigarh because he had many friends here who shared his interests; then began the unending poetry sessions." Now when the same set of friends gather, the poetry sessions begin with a short payer for the departed soul. ashima@tribunemail.com

Play on
A short story by Rabindranath Tagore makes the basis for the play Munna Ki Wapsi and the interjection of Kabir's dohas makes it special. Adapted and directed by P Chandrashekhar, Munna Ki Wapsi makes constant comparison between materialism and devotion, commitment and nonsensical sentimentality. A Centre for Education and Voluntary Action (CEVA) production, it is the second outing of this play; the previous one was staged in August last year. "The response was heartening," says GS Channi, honorary director, CEVA. The group aims to have at least 20 performances this year. "It takes huge effort to prepare the play. We are all open to stage it in colleges, schools, hostels and even house terraces so that it can reach maximum people," he adds. The play will be staged on Friday at the Tagore Theatre-18 from 7pm onwards. — Mona |

Building a dream
Mona Growing up in a rather small place Sunder Nagar in Himachal Pradesh to winning an Award for Excellence in Built Environment in the residential category from the Indian Buildings Congress, Archana Chaudhary is a story of hardwork and persistence. Presently the architect-planner with the Housing Board Haryana, Archana has slowly yet steadily built her body of work and she has an enviable list of awards to her credit. "When I first take up a new project, I step into the shoes of those who are actually going to live there. Keeping in mind the constraints of the site and the requirements, I begin the work," says Archana. She shares her success mantras. Keep working hard This is the first and the last quality one needs to be a winner. Born to an engineer father and a home-maker mum, I worked hard at each step. Topping CBSC in class 12, I studied in Chandigarh College of Architecture on scholarship. A gold medalist there, I continued with full gusto in the government job I opted for. Ten hours is the minimum that I give to my profession, including on weekends, when I also travel for seminars and more. Slog…if you really want to make a difference in life! Commitment is essential There was not much on offer in Sunder Nagar when I was growing up. A neighbour pursuing architecture became my inspiration and I have not looked back since then. Studying in Chandigarh one could not escape Corbusier's influence. Right from my graduation days, I have spent hours in Capitol Complex and returned each time with a significant new detail. On my travels around the world, if I am interested in one thing - it is just how the construction has taken place. Assembly Building by Louis Kahn in Dhaka always intrigued me. One cannot fathom from the outside what lies inside, it's amazing to explore the mysteries once you are inside. Having said that, I make it obvious that I am not for glass facades at all! Remain updated Reaching on the top is easy; what's difficult is maintaining the position. What has helped me in my career is that I have always been updated on the latest in my field; be it material or technology. Family bonding Things at the professional front are way smoother if one has family support, especially if one is a woman trying to make a mark. I found support in ample in my engineer hubby and young daughter Poshika, who happen to be my best critics as well. They are so independent; it gives me liberty to pursue my profession with an open heart for I know that they will do well. It also prepares you better for the challenges that life throws at you. Keep exploring Being part of Indian Institute of Architects has given me the platform to put my varied ideas into practice. Next, I am all for more supportive environment for women in architecture. I have made a beginning for the same and got a positive response. Take any field today— business, Hollywood, Bollywood — chances are you would find five women in the top ten list. I wish to see that happen in my field as well! mona@tribunemail.com |

Jessica Alba can't stand gymming
Actress Jessica Alba hates working out and prefers dancing and running at home to keep herself in shape. The 31-year-old, who has two daughters —Honor, four, and 18-month-old Haven with her husband Cash Warren - said in an interview: "I like doing dance classes. That's fun. I like hip-hop class, mixed with like core Pilates-type exercises."
"And sometimes I do sprint intervals just because I hate working out. Anything where I have to do something but I can get my mind off of doing it, that's so much better for me than anything that's repetitive. Or the music has to be
loud and I have to be moving," Alba said. "So when I'm at home and I'm working out and I don't have a partner with me, I like to put bad television on. Usually a pretty embarrassing reality TV show and I do sprint intervals. So I'll sprint for a minute and walk for 30 seconds and do that on and off for 20-30 minutes usually," she added. —
