Lachiwala flyover opens today
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, February 2
The 173-meter-long Lachiwala railway overbridge connecting Dehradun, Rishikesh and Haridwar will be open to the people tomorrow. A total of Rs 43 crore was spent on the construction of the railway bridge that took four years in the making. The Uttarakhand Public Works Department (PWD) and the Railways have jointly constructed the bridge.

The railway overbridge will replace the century old railway underpass at Lachiwala, a major bottleneck for Dehradun-bound traffic coming from different states.

The traffic flow was hampered as it had to pass through a narrow railway underpass.

It took four years for the completion of the bridge. The construction would also reduce the frequent traffic woes of Haridwar-bound commuters from Chandigarh, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.

Earlier, the construction was to be completed by December 2009 in view of the Mahakumbh that took place in January 2010, but the deadline could not be met.

The Public Works Department (PWD), a major partner, jointly constructed the four-lane overbridge at a cost of Rs 39 crore in association with the Railways. The Railways undertook the construction of the main structure while the PWD was responsible for the approaches connecting both sides.

The existing old underpass is not wide enough and its height too barely allows passage of a bus or a truck. It is considered a nightmare for the commuters as traffic gets held up for hours. The problem compounded during rains in absence of any water disposal system. The need for an overbridge was felt due to manifold increase in the traffic volume after Dehradun became the capital with the creation of Uttarakhand.

Shooting of 'Hello Uttarakhand' begins in Mussoorie
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, February 2
The shooting of a short film titled "Hello Uttarakhand" highlighting the various aspects of rampant corruption that has affected the state for the past 12 years began in Mussoorie today.

The film is directed and produced by Pradeep Bhandari, president of radio and television association of Uttarakhand, and consists several songs through which the exploitation of government officials and politicians would be shown.

According to Pradeep Bhandari, this film is not only being made to make people aware but also to highlight the corrupt system that has taken its roots since the formation of the new state.

Bhandari further said most of the politicians instead of working for the important issues of jal, jungle and zameen(water, forest and land) had themselves turned into biggest land mafias and were looting the state with both hands in connivance with officials of the state. Therefore, a need of short film was being felt here.

The film also raises several questions and proposes to make education mandatory for the electoral representatives in the elections.

Bhandari also said the issues as migration and selling of the resources to people from outside by the government would also figure prominently in the film.

He further said through the short film inordinate nexus between politicians-mafia and the government officials would be highlighted prominently.

Kanta Prasad, Sandeep, Sanjay Bhatt and many other artists from local industry are playing an important part in the film.
