Ganga canal to get facelift at initial point in Haridwar
The width will be increased Additional water for drinking, irrigation purposes
Sandeep Rawat
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, January 29
The 272-mile-long Ganga canal built by the British in 1854 under Colonel Probey Cautley will get a facelift for a few kilometres at it's initial point falling in Haridwar city periphery.

Irrigation Department of Uttar Pradesh, which is the operating agency of Ganga canal falling in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, has now decided to increase the width of the canal. This is to pave way for additional water capacity in it, which will cater to the growing demand of water for irrigation purposes.

Informing about this Vijay Veer Singh, Subdivisional Officer of Ganga canal Head Works, Uttar Pradesh, said that a detailed project report had been approved by the Uttar Pradesh government and soon work will get started.

He added that since the past few decades, owing to the growing population and demand of irrigation-purpose water supply surging, the need was felt for expanding the width, and thereby capacity of Ganga canal from it's starting point at Bhagirathi Setu, Har-ki-Pauri, and Mayapur situated at zero point in Haridwar.

Notably, Ganga canal’s current capacity is 10,500 cusecs, which will get increased by 3000 cusecs after completion of this expansion project in the 6 km area of Ganga canal from Mayapur till Jwalapur.

For this expansion work a new regulator will be built near the Mayapur-Damkoti state guest house on the Setu stretch.

This broadening work will affect the Kanwar patri (stretch) on which local people and millions of Kanwariyas walk during the biannual Kanwar fair.

“Kanwar stretch will also be cut to increase the width of this canal stretch. In the coming years National Highway 58 will become four-laned, the work for which is already going on. The Kanwar movement will not depend on the Kanwar stretch in the near future. The expansion work of Ganga canal will not have any impact on Kanwariya influx," said Singh.

Meanwhile, for the Maha Kumbh at Sangam in Prayag (Allahabad), in view of maintaining sufficient water supply, Uttar Pradesh head works has been releasing daily 2500 cusecs (cubic foot per second) of water from Ganga canal for the past one month.

This is in addition to the 250 cumecs (cubic metres per second) of water being released from Tehri Dam in Tehri Garhwal district by Tehri Hydro Development Corporation.

Ganga canal officials remarked that they had got specific directives to release and monitor water flow in the Ganga canal so that water scarcity is not visible at Sangam in Prayag.

“Even if we have to lessen the water level at Har-ki-Pauri, we have to ensure water supply at Kumbh. In case we get a directive for more water, we will release more water for Prayag Kumbh,”said SDO VV Singh.

Chaotic scenes witnessed at MC meeting
Uniyal, ward members blame officials for delay in works
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, January 29
The monthly Municipal Council meeting held on the council premises here today was marred by chaotic scenes, where the MC President and ward members blamed officials, particularly Executive Officer PS Rawat, for the delay in development works.

As the meeting began, ward members stood up from their seats and vented their ire on Rawat for not approving development works they had passed at previous meetings.

MC President OP Uniyal, disappointed at the non-performance of the officials, scolded them and decided to review the works that have been passed at the meeting today and earlier after 15 days.

The ward members warned that if the works proposed at the board meeting are not executed within 15 days, they would present their joint resignation letters from the board.

Ward member from Barlowganj Santosh Arya said despite giving warning at the November meeting, no work had been completed in her ward so far.

She said instead of speeding up the works, officials were creating unnecessary hurdles due to which they had to face the brunt of the people.

Another ward member, Jasveer Kaur, said the board had passed several development projects at the previous meetings, but officials had failed to deliver work orders and sign an agreement with the contractor, leading to a further delay which was uncalled for.

Uniyal said most of the officials were not doing the needful for the development of the town. He said two vehicles owned by the council were stolen due to the "callous" approach of MC officials, but no action had been taken so far.

He further said the officials had also failed to complete the papers for various vehicles under the MC, resulting in additional financial loss. "When it came to taking action against their own colleagues, the officials are silent on the issue. However, they are active in complaining about ward members and the president," he said.

On the other hand, Rawat alleged that ward members were pressuring him to pass several contracts despite the fact that the MC was facing financial crisis. "The MC is already facing losses and being the Secretary of the council, it is my responsibility to manage the financial affairs of the council," he said.

He said some tenders passed at the council meeting were unwanted and he would act in accordance with the available financial budget and not according to the ward members. He refuted the claims that the officials were not serious towards the council and its works.

Later, the board passed several proposals at the meeting. A proposal to construct a sports and ice-skating stadium was also discussed and it was decided that a memorandum of understanding would be signed with the state government and then only the land will be transferred for the projects.

Uniyal also directed the officials to remove the horses plying on Mall Road without any delay and after identifying the encroachers, an exercise should be carried out to remove them from the council land in the town.

Ward members Sushil Kumar, Jai Kumar Gupta, Kanta Bisht, Nand Lal and others were present on the occasion.

Admission process in DAV college ends amid heavy security
Hunt on to nab ABVP members involved in Principal's manhandling
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, January 29
After the yesterday’s manhandling of the Principal by the ABVP led College Students Union office-bearers, admissions had been done at DAV (PG) College in the heavy presence of the police. Today being the last day for admissions, a large number of students rushed to the college to avoid delays.

The Dehradun district administration had made elaborate security arrangements in the college to ensure that peace was maintained on the college campus at all costs.

The administration had registered a case and was planning to take action against the students union leaders who were involved in the manhandling of the Principal.

The college authorities had already lodged an FIR with the police alleging that a group of students led by the students union president and AVBP leader Mahesh Jagudi was directly involved in the incident in DAV (PG) College.

DAV (PG) College Principal Dr Devendra Bhasin again asserted that there was no question of giving admission to students without verification of mark sheets. He categorically held that the college administration would not allow hoodlums to disturb the academic environs of the college under any circumstances.

Bhasin also pointed out that the college that had a total capacity for 12,500 students was already bursting on its seams with a total of 20,800 students already admitted to the college. He, however, ruled out disbanding the students union in the college asserting that the student unions were being operated in the college as per Lyngdoh committee recommendations.

Meanwhile, the back paper examinations going on in the college these days were also held peacefully.

On the other hand, the police was on a look out of the ABVP members involved in the manhandling but was yet to arrest the students leaders. Some of the supporters of the ABVP held a demonstration in the college in support of the student leaders but got little support from the student community.

Haridwar police launches anti-encroachment drive
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, January 29
The Haridwar police today launched a drive in the city to remove encroachment from roads. Encroachment by roadside vendors and wayward parking by vehicle owners have resulted in less space on roads for commuters.

On the initiative of SSP Arun Mohan Joshi, a drive was carried out at the city’s busiest commercial hubs of Ranipur, Chandracharya Chowk and the Shankar Ashram stretch and at other markets.

Traders who had encroached upon portions of roads were given warnings and directed to remove encroachment. As a result most of the traders kept their goods within their shops. Four-wheelers and two-wheelers parked beyond the yellow line on the roads were also towed away.

Penalty was also levied on traffic rule violators and the drive showed positive results as people were seen parking their vehicles at authorised parking zones. More than 30 two-wheelers were towed away while 20 four-wheelers were challaned during the drive.

By the evening the impact of the drive was evident as there was ample space on roads, intersections and parking zones in the markets where vehicles were parked in a systematic order.

Circle Officer, Traffic, Chandra Mohan said the police would continue the drive for the next few days and surprise checking would be done at regular intervals.

President of the Chandrcharya Chowk Vyapar Mandal Mridul Kaushik and representative of the Ranipur-Bhagat Singh Chowk traders Uday Ram Semwal lauded the police initiative. They assured the police of full cooperation in its drive that adds to the beauty of the city and ensured convenience to traders, commuters and tourists.
