Getting naughty
Sergeant Nicolas Broody, a war hero, returns to his country and family in the English series Homeland. Now, everyone wants a bit of him. Okay, it ends here. Now is the time to draw an interesting analogy. Our man, the jatt returns home from the lush green fields; to his college, to his ‘modern’ beautiful lady and here again, everyone wants a bit of it. At least, Pollywood is in no mood of leaving him alone!
This time, they have called him to do an entertaining act and they’ve called it Naughty Jatts. A Multiline Entertainment Pvt Ltd film directed by Pankaj Batra of Virsa fame, this jatt is going to tickle your funny bone for sure (as you know and like you know) and also guarantee wholesome entertainment. This ‘naughty jatt’ will make sure he is different. Joining him in this are actors Aarya Babbar, Neeru Bajwa, Roshan Prince, BN Sharma and Binnu Dhillon. Each one of them have had their encounters with the jatt, save for Aarya Babbar.
Punjabi at heart
His role in Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola is still getting appreciation. And for sure, Aarya knows about it. “I am thankful that Vishal Bhardwaj gave me a part in the movie. I am glad I was a part of the project,” he says. Aarya loves Punjabi movies; with loads of good work to look forward to, this is his first encounter with the jatt. “I liked the initial title of the film Chandigarh Karey Ashiqui; I guess this one is interesting and offers a lot of promise.” Aarya is flooded with offers but he wants to take time before he gets on with another project. “I have worked with Pankaj Batra before, so we are hoping to create entertaining work again.”
Crazy jatt
Binnu Dhillon is no longer a name that will take time to register. You just can’t miss him. However, he tries to do something different every time. “I am inspired by people around; laughter is something that is hidden everywhere,” adds Binnu, who plays Laali in Naughty Jatts. His role in Carry On Jatta was worth remembering. “I am always different in comedy. Carry On Jatta was a comedy of a different kind; a good one, I am trying to do the same but through different characters.”
Director’s call
Pankaj Batra is the name attached with Virsa, a movie with more interesting songs! He says, “Jatt portrays our culture, it brings in fun and naughtiness; so the name Naughty Jatts. As the title of the movie suggests, there are lots of naughty jatts in this musical romantic comedy that will only leave the audience in peals of laughter.”
Roshan Prince is the name that is being talked about in the Punjabi film circuit. He is young, vibrant and can deal with the jatt. “This movie is not about a particular age group. It caters to one and all.” He laughs, “We are all naughty and chasing Neeru Bajwa in the movie.”
Lesser the better
Neeru Bajwa, Punjabi film actresss, has worked with maximum jatts and this time she hopes, “I think we are making an entertaining movie.” jasmine@tribunemail.com
All about teamwork
The lyrics of Naughty Jatts have been penned by G-Deep (USA) and the music has been given by Jaggi Singh. The cinematography of the film is being done by Vineet Malhotra and action sequences by Mahmood Bakshi, who gave stylish shots in Carry On Jatta and Yaar Anmulle.”

Starry eyed
Kirti Kulhari has made her way to filmdom and she is here to stay. With her four movies — Rise Of The Zombie, Jal, Single Chal Riyaa Hun, Sooper Se Ooper — slated to release this year, she is happy portraying all characters — from a simple village belle to the modern babe.
Having taken her first step in the glamour world with commercials, Kirti moved to music videos next. Theatre provided the training ground for acting. “For one whole year I did just theatre, putting everything else on hold,” says the actor who made a debut in the industry with Khichdi: The Movie. As of now, Kirti is kicked about Rise Of The Zombie, which releases in the coming month. “It is the first zombie movie ever in India. The challenge lies in introducing the new genre to the audience,” she says. Having played the multi-layered character of Tanya in Shaitan, playing Vinny in Zombie was not that challenging as it was a much simpler role, but she adds, “It takes as much hardwork and sincerity to pull through any role.” In Jal she plays a village belle Kesar, while in Sooper Se Ooper she enacts a girl Gul, who is totally in love with dancing. Movies have kept her occupied and life tosses up a new challenge each day. “The glamour industry is a tough place to make a mark in. Even kids born and brought up in star families have to struggle to find their way up, so you can imagine how much more an outsider has to do,” she says. To keep waiting for work, meeting challenging deadlines and remaining sane in the intense competition-driven world doesn’t come easy, and Kirti credits her family for it. “Discipline and sincerity are inculcated during one’s upbringing,” says Kirti.

German connection
Manpriya Singh She rolls out the red carpet in an unimaginable way, or in a quite imaginable way shall we say? “Whenever anybody comes to my house I tie a red ribbon to my German Shephard Macc,” Nimer, LLM student, reasons out. The double-coated, six-year- old, is anyway a champion at giving a grand reception. “No matter what time you come back home, and from where, he jumps about excitedly and gives a heart warming welcome.” The reciprocation of love is even more interesting. She laughs, “Whosoever walks in home, asks for Macc first, more than anything else.” Love me, love my dog
While the tiny pup may have grown into a full-sized dog, the name remains short and sweet. “My father named him Macc. In fact, before him also we had a double- coated German Shephard who was also called Macc. He was named so because it is a very easily pronounceable name.” The previous trail of pets shares similar characteristics. Before both of them we had a German Shephard only. But it was called Bruzy. The love for the breed perhaps matches the love for the pet. “I feel German Shephard and Labradors are the best breeds to keep. For instance, Macc is a friendly dog. It all depends on how you train them. Yours faithfully
The life of a pampered pooch is perhaps envied by many. “He’s a really pampered dog. We never tie him. He’s let loose in the house.” She adds, “Then you have to feed him by hand. He’s such a fussy dog when it comes to food. On the other hand, if we are having snacks, he’ll blackmail us into eating them.” Nevertheless, for a dog owner, nothing beats the joys of having one. “In today’s time, they are a perfect stress buster.” manpriya@tribunemail.com

Strings of legacy
Ustad Nishat Khan: A name synonymous with seven generations of classical music and a four-hundred-year-old legacy. The artiste has not only upheld the tradition, but transcended boundaries and touched diverse realms such as Western classical music, abstract jazz, Flamenco and Gregorian chant.
In Chandigarh, on the invite of SPICMACAY (Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth), Ustad Nishat Khan left the audience spellbound with a rare rendition of Raag Yaman on Thursday evening at IMTECH-39. The sitar virtuoso, who divides his time between Los Angeles, where he is visiting faculty at University of California, and Kolkata, he shares notes from his incredible journey. The beginning
I was playing the sitar long before I knew what I wanted to do. I gave my first concert when I was seven. Being legendary Ustad Imrat Khan’s son, Ustad Vilayat Khan’s nephew and Ustad Enayat Khan’s grandson comes at a price. It was way challenging to carve my own niche. I grew up with riyaaz. When at 14, I decided to drop-out from school my father granted it, provided I did riyaaz in lieu of all the time spent in school. I agreed. It paved the way for the passage that lay ahead. The journey
I feel fortunate to have got the opportunities in life; my struggle has been to make the most of it. Representing India at illustrious platforms such as Royal Albert Hall, London, Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York is a matter of great pride. That people who do not belong to India or know the language appreciate the concerts and demand more is indeed invigorating. I have taught at universities like Columbia, Stanford, Princeton and more. There is nothing that gives more happiness than passing on our rich legacy. Bollywood outing
Once again, I feel fortunate to have had the chance to try my hand at popular music. I have had friends in Bollywood for long, but it happened with Sudhir Mishra calling me to compose for Yeh Saali Zindagi. It was an all together new experience; an approach altogether different. I am glad that it got appreciated and gave me the first popular hit. I am working on a few more film projects and am quite relaxed working in Mumbai. Future tense
The world recognises us for our rich culture, but sadly the situation is tense at the moment. The younger lot is reluctant to embrace our tradition. It is time the artistes, society and corporate houses unite to preserve our legacy and restore it to the glory it deserves, not only on international platforms but also within our country. SPICMACAY is doing a great job and as an artiste I feel I am an integral part of it. mona@tribunemail.com

Call of
the wild
At times, it is important to push your limits and bite into your fears. Niall McCann is set to venture into the wild and this time, he will take it a notch higher. In the new series of the show Biggest and Baddest, to be telecast on Animal Planet, Niall, who is also a biologist, will be the host. You have seen him before in Lost in the Amazon, however, this show according to him, is very different. “Lost in the Amazon was more like a historical biography. In the new series of Biggest and Baddest, I will be exploring some of the most dangerous and interesting species of animals,” he says.
We wonder if his passion is more dangerous or his endeavour to pursue it? “During childhood, I was a wimp. There was always a lurking desire to challenge the boundaries of my fear and that is the reason why I chose this profession. Honestly, I don’t want to be scared of anything.” While talking about his encounter with fear, Niall recollects an interesting incident from the shoot in Nepal, “None of my team members were keen on accompanying me into the woods so I decided to go alone. I was not so long in the forest that an elephant came charging upon me. That was my moment of sheer fear. It must have been a matter of good judgement that I hid behind a tree. The elephant came towards me; I could feel its trunk sniffing me and remained motionless. I only got out of the situation once the best moved; I ran as far as I could.” Niall likes every bit of the adrenaline rush though, “I am very fond of animals and nature. India in my opinion is one the countries that has a variety of flora and fauna. As a biologist, I feel that everyone should cultivate interest in wildlife. Remember when we were kids, the smallest of things would excite us; the worst thing that we as individuals do is kill the child within us. We should all generate ‘interest’ towards conserving wildlife, which is more of a responsibility that each one of us should shoulder.” He also makes a humble request regarding conservation of wildlife, “In Nepal, the government has recruited its armed forces to safeguard the fauna of that area. I think, instead of fighting with each other, the countries should focus on preserving their resources. We choose our own government and if we press them to ensure proper implementation of animal rights as well as trigger plans regarding conservation, we can go a long way in keeping our environment safe and secure.” Niall’s thoughts are incredibly inspirational — it’s only those who believe in their dreams that have the will to achieve them! amarjot@tribunemail.com

Accessorise your staircase
Sukhmani Staircase railings were earlier designed to serve a practical purpose, to help make your trip up and down the stairs easy and safe. Today, in addition to its functionality, railings add a great deal to the look of your stairs and home. They give stairs a visual presence and make a staircase a work of art. There are various options to choose from that will suit your decor and style. WOOD: Wood is the most traditional option for a staircase railing. Using wood you can create any look, ranging from simple to elegant to ornate or bold. Gone are the days when wooden railings were just limited to a traditional decor style. Today they come in clean straight lines and can be installed in any modern home. From different stains to different woods, wood railings boast of a modern twist and the various options of colours prevent it from being boring. You can also combine wood with other materials like metal or glass to make them unique. WROUGHT IRON: Metal railings provide design opportunities that will blend with many architectural styles. Wrought iron railings are very versatile where the design element is concerned. They make decorative railings that are highly ornate, with intricate curves and scrolls. Those that feature swirling, romantic designs are ideal for an Old World style home, while those with thicker, more basic twists are an ideal fit for a home with a rustic design scheme. GLASS: If you prefer an ultra modern look for your staircase, a glass railing may be the best option. Unlike other railings that feature spindles, balusters and banisters, a glass railing is usually made up of panels of glass that provide a sleek and seamless look. They make the home look larger and don't block much of the view. For an interesting twist, you can use stained glass or frosted glass panels. Frosted glass panels help create an air of sophistication in the house. However, glass railings may not be the best choice for your house if you have small kids. STAINLESS STEEL: A stainless steel staircase railing is an alternative to glass that still provides a modern look. While these may be more common in commercial settings, stainless steel railings can add contemporary flair to homes as well. These are available in a variety of finishes and can easily be customised to match your home style. (Sukhmani is an interior and landscape designer) |

Pair up please! Bollywood has its share of super directors and super actors. We bring you a list of those who must collaborate with each other Ayan Mukerji and Priyanka Chopra: Ayan made Wake Up Sid! and is currently working on Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. He is a new but capable director and the versatile Miss Chopra has been working with older, established directors for a while now and she has done serious movies. So Ayan should direct her in a romantic comedy or a light-hearted movie.
Gauri Shinde and Vidya Balan: Gauri Shinde's direction in English Vinglish was exemplary and original. She extracted a fine performance from Sridevi. Now, Vidya is a spectacular actress and she only chooses scripts worthy of her talent. So you can very well imagine how super-duper this jodi and their movie will be. Expect an award-sweeper! Hrithik Roshan and Imtiaz Ali: Hrithik Roshan is a powerhouse of talent who is capable of sweeping awards for action movies as well (he did that with Dhoom 3 and took the movie to another level). Imtiaz is a magical and whimsical yet grounded director who extracts flawless performances from his actors (except Nargis Fakhri). So, just imagine how awesome their collaboration will be, a match made in cinematic heaven, indeed! Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Kareena Kapoor: The talented and powerful duo has been trying to work together since a long time and Raam Leela almost happened but Kareena's marriage got in the way. So, we do hope Sanjay Leela Bhansali gives her a role of a lifetime in an upcoming project. Anurag Kashyap and Shah Rukh Khan: Anurag Kashyap has proved his mettle as a director time and time again. The duo has been planning to work together since ages and it is high time the collaboration happened. This movie, whenever it is made, will be a feather in SRK's acing cap. And he will promote it unlike anything else which will make it the biggest hit on AK's career. That is what SRK does! Party time: Deepika Padukone is very happy with the success of Race 2 and all the praise showered on her. She had barely landed in Kashmir with the cast and crew of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, when she threw a lavish party for them complete with authentic Kashmiri food. The party lasted till the wee hours! How amazing! |

All’s well with Mika & Honey
The song, Punjabiyan Di Battery, has become an instant hit with the audiences. The song is tracking big time on music charts and radio.
Mika Singh and Honey Singh are renowned singers. They both have a huge fan-following and their songs are a part of most parties and weddings. Both the artistes will be part of Yash Raj Films's next film, Mere Dad Ki Maruti (MDKM). In fact, the duo will be singing together in a popular track of the film called Punjabiyan Di Battery. Few media reports recently suggested that Mika was annoyed with Honey Singh for all the credit he's getting for the MDKM song. However, sources close to them confirm there is no bad blood between them. "Mika Singh and Honey Singh have known each other for more than five years. In fact, it was Mika who recommended Honey for the song to Yash Raj Films in the first place," says a source. Mika was called on board for singing Punjabiyan Di Battery. However, the song needed a variation of voice and Mika was sure Honey would be the perfect fit. The source adds, "Mika suggested Honey's name. The two are practically like brothers. There is no issue between the two at all." Mere Dad Ki Maruti is Yash Raj Films' next starring Ram Kapoor, Saqib Salem and Rhea Chakraborty.

Welcome Sara!
Sara Khan is never far from controversy. After a big public wedding in Bigg Boss, Sara came face to face with her ex- husband Ali Merchant on the reality show Welcome. He came to her house as a guest and shocked everyone. Sara talks about her experience and more...
How did you feel when you saw Ali on the show? It was a huge shock for me. I couldn't believe it. But I shot the episode as I am a professional. But the producers of the show replaced him in next episodes? Yes, they did. I am glad they got my good friend Vinduji Dara Singh. Your other show The Serial is doing well and you are looking good. How is that experience? The show is scripted and we don't go through the stuff that is being shown on TV. The real part is in terms of our behaviour, attitude where there's not much acting. Yes, it seems more natural… The dialogues are natural and we are given situations where we have to react. We don't need scripts and go with the pointers. It's a different experience. After doing two big daily soaps, it's great to be doing this show. You have started a production house recently? Yes, I have big plans for my production house. I have launched a film and working out some formalities. It is a big dream and I can't wait for it to come true. Tell us about your boyfriend Paras… He's a wonderful person. Someone, who I can trust. Everything I wanted in a man.

Get, set, romance!
Very few actors get to romance more than one girl on a television show and Shashank Vyas is one of those lucky few. The actor will be seen romancing a new girl yet again in Colors' Balika Vadhu.
Soon after the leap in the show, he was seen romancing Pratyusha Banarjee aka Anandi. From here, the story progressed and his character Jagya fell in love with Gauri aka Anjum Farooki. However, the story is taking yet another twist and as seen so far, Sriti Jha has been roped in to play Gauri, the girl opposite him. Currently, the track is going pretty slow where it is being shown that Jagya just cares for Ganga, but soon he will develop a feelings for her. We contacted Shashank to check if he really finds himself lucky to which he replied, "It's more of a task as when you have to romance three different girls on the same show, you cannot repeat your emotions." When asked about the actress he is comfortable romancing with, he stated, "Pratyusha is a brilliant actress and Anjum is focused. So, it's been wonderful working with both of them. Sriti has an experience of four to five shows and I am just one show old. So, she is senior to me.”

Treat for the mind
Midnight's Children Here's a film that Rushdie has spent two years faithfully adapting from his own 1981 Booker Prize-winning magic-realist novel. Acting as scriptwriter, he also served as executive producer and selected director, Deepa Mehta, an Indian filmmaker best known for her Elements trilogy (1996-2005). Midnight's Children tells the story of Saleem Sinai, played as a boy by Darsheel Safary and as a young man by Satya Bhabha. Saleem is born in Bombay to a pauper family at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947: the day India became an independent nation. He and Shiva (Purav Bhandare), a child born to wealthier parents, are switched at birth by a nurse whose interpretation of the maxim "let the rich be poor and the poor rich" is slightly over-literal. An amateur's play Rushdie is a writer--of books. This, however, is his first attempt at screenplay, and his novelistic approach of storytelling has resulted in an unfocused, rather baffling adaptation of events. All in all, it's a good attempt that would possibly set a milestone in giving a cinematic rendition to books. Anuj Khanna, businessman Intellectual's retreat It is a story of the rich, the poor and the misguided. It is fiction and fantasy delightfully wrapped within the folds of the political scenario of the three countries, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. I liked the movie and I guess anyone who fancies intellectual cinema will. Pranav Behl, Businessman Must see It is definitely a must-see. I enjoyed the movie. However, it would be unfair to compare it with Life of Pi or Slumdog Millionaire. It does cater to the audience of specific interest; nevertheless, it did a good job to sit well with the tastes of its audience. Amarinder Singh, Student, Chitkara College David David, an action-thriller, is directed by Bejoy Nambiar, starring Vikram, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Vinay Virmani in the titular roles, alongside Tabu, Lara Dutta, Monica Dogra and Isha Sharvani. The plot revolves around the lives of three different men named David, intend to take a step that will change their lives forever. Well done Neil The film is about retribution, love and forgiveness. As the film repeatedly moves from the sublime to the absurd, it courts the risk of going out of control but thankfully, this one doesn't. Also, Niel besides looking good, acted really well. Shrishti Singh, Student Too long I quiet loved the way the film rolled through the mystery. However, it was stretched way too long. Thematically the movie is strong. The segment of the film that is woven around a struggling Mumbai musician's thwarted ambitions and his rediscovery of a misunderstood father took on stark political overtones rooted in the theme of religious fundamentalism. Himanshu Kappal, musician — As told to Amarjot Kaur |

The year ahead
If your birthday is FEBRUARY 2...
Expect some surprises, but keep an eye out for little miracles and meaningful coincidences. Even if life seems dark at the moment, you can be sure things are about to improve. The tide is turning in the universe again; everything will soon be going your way. You will want to avoid negative people as you will be too sensitive to dark vibrations, so surround yourself with positive people and things. You will be able to help others with your natural healing touch, but don't let people take advantage of you. If you wish to undertake something new, you must consider difficulties that will arise, especially at the beginning. Patience and faith in your goals will help you but will not be enough: you must choose someone who can help; accept the advice of others with benevolence. There will be sudden, new developments at work that could necessitate a change in strategy. You will still be able to follow your goals though they will be postponed or revised. An overseas business opportunity is also predicted for some of you. Several opportunists will try to jump on to your bandwagon for personal gains, but you should simply ignore them. In fact, it will be wiser for you to work independently to safeguard your position. A respected teacher or expert is impressed by your positive attitude and will offer you a job as an assistant. Getting paid to write and perform research is your idea of heaven. You will be able to set your own hours and work independently. Be ready to take an ethical stand if you see someone being bullied. It's the only way to put a stop to this outrageous bad behaviour. You'll be more eloquent than usual and this will make you more confident both in your personal life as well as professional life. You can expect little help from friends and must walk the path alone. Those married will have a better rapport and understanding with their mate. Those in love will find delightful moments in the company of their beloved and make the best of forthcoming festive season. Those travelling will meet an interesting person. You'll be very determined, will overcome all difficulties and make changes that will lead to increased earnings. Mood: Uncomfortable at times. Compatible signs: Virgo, Capricorn, Leo. Lucky colours: Maroon, White. Lucky days: Saturday. Lucky numbers: 1, 8, 17, 20, 28.
You share your birthday with Shamita Shetty (February 2, 1979, Mangalore), who is the younger sister of Shilpa Shetty. She made her debut in the year 2000 with the Yash Raj Films blockbuster 'Mohabbatein'. Since then she has mostly found success in item numbers, including "Sharara Sharara" in Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai (2001) and "Chori Pe Chori" in Saathiya (2002). Later, she found success with her first solo-hit Zeher. According to her stars, Shamita will not be as successful as her sister.
