Cabinet clears death for rapists in rare cases
Approves ordinance on crimes against women Word ‘rape’ to be replaced by ‘sexual assault’

The Union Cabinet today approved the promulgation of an ordinance that introduces tougher jail terms for crimes against women, including death penalty for extreme cases of sexual assault.

Diesel rates to go up 40-50 paise per month
New Delhi, February 1
Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily on Friday Diesel prices will be hiked by 40-50 paise per litre every month till losses on the nation’s most used fuel are completely wiped out. "Until further orders, oil marketing companies can increase it (diesel price) by 40-50 paise (per litre) every month," he said.

Crime continues to be a way life in the land of khaps and honour killings with Haryana recording three murders, two rapes, four kidnappings and three dacoities daily last year. In fact, the state reported 983 murder and 687 rape cases last year, slightly less than the 2011 figures of 1,061 murders and 723 rapes.

HC no to institution tax in Punjab
Chandigarh, February 1
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has quashed a February 2, 2011, notification of the Punjab Government for levying institution tax. A Division Bench held the notification was violative of the Constitution of India. Notices raising demand from the institutions and commercial buildings outside the municipal limits have also been quashed.
