Linemen hold protest against arrests: A number of unemployed linemen here on Monday took out a protest march demanding release of their 57 associates, including 24 women, who were arrested on Sunday for protesting at the SAD's Maghi Mela rally when the Chief Minister was about to start his speech. The linemen, who have been demanding jobs, also burnt an effigy of the state government at Kotkapura

Sarpanch suspended for encroachment: The Director of Rural Development and Panchayats has suspended a sarpanch for allegedly encroaching upon government land. Residents of Malakpur village had lodged a complaint with the authorities alleging that sarpanch Jaswinder Singh had illegally occupied land measuring 3 kanal and 10 marlas belonging to Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd. While the Distirct Development and Panchayat Officer has been asked to get the encroached land vacated, the Ropar ADC has been ordered to investigate the matter.

11-yr-old asphyxiated in Malerkotla: Eleven-year-old Sukhwinder Kaur alias Sukhi died allegedly of asphyxiation while her parents Bilaldeen (37) and Baljit Kaur (33) fell unconscious due to inhaling of gas from a coal fire pot kept in their room on Sunday at Malerkotla. Station House Officer (city) Devinder Singh said the incident occurred as there was no ventilation in the room.
Sunam man tests positive for swine flu: A resident of
Sunam, Satish Kumar, has tested positive for swine flu. He is under-treatment at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital,
Ludhiana, for the past about a week. Civil Surgeon Dr HS Bali said Satish was "responding well to treatment".
