Three killed in road accident
Ropar, December 27 The victims have been identified as Bhupinder Kaur, Surmukh Singh and Jagir Kaur. The injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital. Inspector Manvir Singh Bajwa said an Innova car coming, from Ludhiana collided head on with a three-wheeler along the Sirhind Canal. Two of the victims died in the on the spot while another seriously injured died at the local Civil Hospital. The police has registered a case under Sections 279, 304A,337,338 and 427. |
Couple surrenders in court
Chandigarh, December 27 The UT police had rescued the manager from the kidnappers and arrested three persons in the case, while Kajal and Vijay were absconding. The police had then arrested Ajay, Ashok and manager of an Ambala-based Hotel, Devki Nandan. The police had said the prime accused, Kajal and Vijay, who are member of a dance group, had a dispute with the hotel manager over a deal of Rs 3 lakh and thus planned to kidnap him for ransom. Kajal had been employed with Dhiresh Shah six years ago. She had called the manager to Chandigarh to select girls for dancing. Dhiresh had visited Chandigarh on November 4 for a business deal. At 8 pm, when he made a distress call to his assistant manager Mohan at Bangalore from his mobile and said that he was in trouble as he was detained by some persons who are demanding a sum of Rs 20 lakh from him for his release. The hotel owner Thimma then reached Chandigarh on November 6 and came to know about the incident and had lodged a compliant with Sector 31 police station. The UT police team reached Ambala and after working on various leads it was found that the kidnappers detained Dhiresh in Abhinandan Hotel situated in Ambala Cantt. — TNS |

Man held on charge of kidnapping daughter, son-in-law
Chandigarh, December 27 The police arrested Dhani Ram, a resident of Yamunanagar, in the case and rescued his son-in-law, who had eloped and married his daughter Shalu and had also obtained protection from the Punjab and Haryana High Court last month. Shalu is yet to be recovered. The police claimed the girl was in her maternal house in Rajoli village in Ambala district. The couple was abducted from near their rented accommodation on December 24. A Yamunanagar resident had complained to the police that his brother Gurjit and his wife Shalu, both 25, were kidnapped from near Maloya by the girl’s father. A police party then went to the Yamunanagar residence of the girl where her father Dhani Ram misled the police and said they were not aware of the whereabouts of their daughter and her husband. Investigations by the police revealed that Gurjit and Shalu had married in 2010 against the wishes of their parents. Shalu’s parents had also got a case of kidnapping registered against the groom. The girl’s father then arranged the marriage of his daughter with someone else and the wedding was scheduled to be held on December 10. The girl left her home with her husband on November 24 this year and the couple took shelter in Kajheri village in Chandigarh where they also arranged an advocate and moved the High Court for protection. The girl’s father got to know of the couple’s whereabouts and kidnapped them on December 24. Gurjit was kept in confinement in a poultry farm and allegedly beaten up all these days. His father-in-law was coming to drop him in Chandigarh today when a team of the Sector 39 police station traced the taxi and arrested him. He will be produced in court tomorrow. A case has been registered at the Sector 39 police station. |

19 booked for illegal mining
Mohali, December 27 Out of the 19 persons, against whom cases have been registered so far, 15 have been arrested the police. Cases under Section 379 of the IPC and 4(1) of the Mining and Minerals Act, 1957, have been registered against them in this regard. According to reports, while most of the suspects were allegedly resorting to illegal mining of sand from a choe, some of them were lifting earth from agricultural fields in violation of the law. Vehicles carrying sand and earth have also been impounded. In one case, seven vehicles carrying 8.40 lakh sq ft of sand were impounded and a case was registered against six persons, all hailing from different parts of Haryana. All of them were arrested on December 22. In another case, five persons were arrested on charges of theft and illegal mining on December 22 and five vehicles were impounded. While three of the persons were from the Rajpura area, two again were from Haryana. Their vehicles were found carrying 24,000 sq ft of loose earth and 24,000 sq ft of sand. It is learnt that during a checking by Lakhmir Singh, SDM, Mohali, it was found that loose earth was being sold at Rs 300 per sq ft by some persons and large-scale digging was going on in some villages. Digging at a depth of almost 10-ft had allegedly been done in parts of Paton village, harming the topography of the area. Hi-tech machines, which could fill up a truck in minutes, were being used to remove earth. While some of the cases were registered by the police, the others were done on the directions of Lakhmir Singh. Strict action is being initiated against those indulging in illegal mining after the state government gave the powers of mining officers to SDMs concerned in the first week of December. |

Mohali, December 27 “During investigations, we have found that the Sunny car bearing registration number PB65R-8600 (in which the accused were said to have come) belonged to Jodhveer Singh Shergill. The vehicle is in his (Jodhveer) wife’s, Gurparkash Kaur, name. Now, we are investigating the role of Jodhveer Singh Shergill in the case,” said the police. In his complaint, Harpreet Singh alleged that a group of five-six persons, who came in a Sunny car, thrashed him with hockey sticks, while brandishing a pistol at him. “My head was knocked by the pistol by one of the attackers,” said Harpreet, who had nine stitches on his head at the Civil Hospital, Phase 6, that night. Meanwhile, Jodhveer, a nephew of Akali leader Arjun Singh Shergill, held a press conference in this connection alleging that he was innocent and the police was trying to drag his name in the case wrongly. Jodhveer said Harpreet, along with his friends, was consuming alcohol in front of the gurdwara in Phase 5. “He, along with his friends, ensued fight when he was asked to leave the place,” alleged Jodhveer, adding that someone had broken the windowpane of his car, which was parked in front of the gurdwara. The police has registered a case under Sections 342, 323 of the IPC and Sections 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act against Harvinder Singh, alias Minto, a resident of Phase 7, Lucky and an unidentified person in this regard at the Phase 1 Police Station. The police claimed that a case was already registered against Jodhveer Singh at the Phase 1 Police Station. “Raids are on nab the accused,” said the police. |

Camp venue sHifted; players suffer
Chandigarh, December 27 According to sources, now from Saupin School, Sector 32, the camp has been shifted to Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19. Adding more to the misery, the department handed over the camp to a PT teacher after the appointed coach refused to accompany the team, citing personal reasons. Notably, the same coach had refused to head the cricket team, girls’ (U-19), after attending the camp for initial days. The boys’ camp was earlier handed over to cricket coach Nagesh Gupta but later it was given to Deepak Lothia. “The camp was shifted there but only for net practice. The appointed coach refused to accompany the team to the match venue, so we have appointed other person to accompany the team,” said Amarjeet Singh, sports organisers, UT Education department. The camp was earlier handed over to cricket coach Nagesh Gupta and the team was undergoing regular practice sessions at the cricket ground of Sector 32. The team is scheduled to represent the city in the upcoming 58th edition of School National Games’ Cricket Competition to be held in Delhi from January 2 to 8. “Due to some personal reason, I have refused to accompany the team but the officials could have continued the camp at the ground of government school, Sector 32. To maintain the team’s combination, there is no need to shift the base of the camp. The department has not informed me anything regarding this. If I am not accompanying that doesn’t mean, I cannot provide my services, to the young players,” said Nagesh. On other hand, Deepak Lothia, PT teacher, said: “The camp is shifted only for net practice due to non-availability of the turf at the GMSSS 32.” Notably, Lothia’s nephew is the member of same team and his name has been mentioned as third on the final 16-member list. “We are having the best of turfs and the camp was shifted just to make the entire team familiar with the turf. For running and other purposes, the team will move to GMSSS-32,”said Deepak. |
