2,110 cases settled in lok adalat

Fatehgarh Sahib, December 16
A lok adalat was organised in the District Courts here under the chairmanship of Kuldeep Singh, District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, Free Legal Aid Authority. In this lok adalat, 2,110 cases were settled on the spot amicably out of 2,190 cases. Compensation worth Rs 11.47 crore was awarded to the beneficiaries.

Addressing the litigants, Kuldeep Singh, District and Sessions Judge, highlighted the importance of lok adalats.

He said all cases related to civil, criminal, bank loans, matrimonial disputes, bouncing of cheques and accidental claims were heard and settled amicably at lok adalats.

He called upon the litigants to take the benefits of these lok adalats as they would save their time, energy, money and unwanted litigation.

Kuldeep Singh said during the past five years, 26,078 cases were presented in the lok adalats organised in Fatehgarh Sahib and out of them, 13,973 cases were settled amicably and settlements worth Rs 46.55 crore were awarded.

He said the District Free Legal Aid Services Committee had nominated certain lawyers on the panel who would provide free legal aid to those litigants who could not afford and had nominal income.

Varinder Sandhu, Assistant, District Legal Attorney, also addressed the litigants.

3 drug peddlers arrested

Fatehgarh Sahib, December 16
The district police has arrested 3 drug peddlers during a routine checking here. The police also recovered 7 grams of smack, 1,100 intoxicant tablets, 50 injections and a knife from their possession.

SSP HS Mann said during the checking, the Amloh police arrested one Munish Kumar Mishra, a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh, and recovered 7 grams of smack from his possession.

The police arrested one Ashok Kumar, a resident of Morinda, and recovered 1,100 intoxicant tablets and 50 injections from him.

The police nabbed one Pardeep Arora, a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh, and recovered a knife from his custody.

Pardeep Arora was also involved in various looting incidents.

All accused were booked under the NDPS Act.

The SSP said the campaign launched by the district police against drug peddlers and anti-social elements was yielding good results as people were coming forward 
to provide information about them.

Man killed in road accident

Banur, December 16
An unidentified person was killed in a road accident near Banur after being hit by an unknown vehicle yesterday night. The dead body of the victim had been kept at AP Jain Hospital, Rajpura, for 72 hours for the purpose of identification.

As per information, the accident occurred when an unknown vehicle hit the victim on the Rajpura-Chandigarh Road near Giansagar Hospital at 11 PM on Saturday.

The victim died on the spot and the driver of the vehicle fled from the scene. A case has been registered.

Drug  peddling
Nigerian sent to 14-day judicial custody

Four days after the UT police had arrested a Nigerian for carrying 30 gm of cocaine, the accused was sent to judicial custody of 14 days today. The police has written to the Delhi police to arrest another Nigerian Atol, who is his accomplice.

Godwin Ulo Awa (42) was arrested with 30 gm of cocaine on December 12. The value of the drugs is estimated to be Rs 80 lakh in the international market. The police suspect the accused to be a part of the gang busted in Amritsar, two months ago, when heroin worth Rs115 crore was seized from a goods train.

The accused was staying as a paying guest in Sector 69, Mohali, and smuggling drugs since the past few years, the police said.

The police of the Industrial Area police station laid a barrier near forest nursery, Daria village, Chandigarh, and nabbed the accused while he was coming in his car number CH 52 2T 4110. During search it was found that he was carrying 30 grams of cocaine.

The police recovered two sealed samples of five gm each and another packet containing 20 gm of cocaine. During the interrogation, the accused disclosed that he smuggled drugs along with his accomplice Atol, who is also a Nigerian, and is based in Delhi. The police has dispatched a team to Delhi to arrest the accused.

100 boxes of liquor recovered

The crime branch of the Chandigarh Police arrested Amit Chauhan, a resident of Mani Majra, with 100 boxes of liquor. The police also arrested Basant Kumar and recovered 200 gm of charas from him.

The police was on patrolling duty near Fun Republic when they got a tip off that Amit Chauhan, who purchased the liquor from Chandigarh for sale in the nearby states of Himachal at a high rate, would be coming in vehicle no CH03Y-4566.

Acting swiftly, the police nabbed Amit Chauhan. On searching the vehicle, the police recovered 100 boxes of liquor. The accused was asked to produce permit or license regarding the recovered liquor, but he failed to produce any such document.

A case under the Excise Act was registered. During a checking near TPoint Indira Colony, Basant Kumar was nabbed with 200 gm of charas.

Mohali, December 16
Delhi’s Bobby Bhogal retained his title of the OYA Thunderbolt Autocross and Motocross Championship in the four-wheeler’s category. The event concluded at the YPS Grounds here today.

Defending champion, Bhogal completed the 1.5-km dirt track in 1.23 minutes. In the Padam Chevrolet Off-Road Challenge, Karan Bali finished first with Sachin Verma securing second place. The team Thunderbolt won the maximum number of prizes.

In addition to four-wheelers, the event also had high participation of bikers. Abhishek Mishra of Jaipur straddled across both categories of four-wheelers and two-wheelers.

Ropar club wins football cup

The Ropar Football Club won the fourth edition of the JLPL Football Cup held here. In the final match, the title winners defeated Friends Football Club, Mohali, by 2-1.

The team was awarded with a cash prize of Rs 25,000, along with gold medals, whereas the runners-up team was given Rs 15,000.

HS Bal, chief organiser, said the tournament was conducted under the supervision of IP Negi, NIS coach, Patiala.

Earlier in the semi-final matches, the Crazy Football Club lost to Friends Football Club, Mohali, by 0-1, while the Ropar Football Club registered victory over Palhyan Football Chamkursahib by 1-0.

The soccer team of St. Stephen’s School, Sector 45, defeated Ashiana Public School, in a one-sided affair of the Molly Carver Memorial Football Tournament held here today.

The winning side pipped the rivals by 4-0 with Anirudh Thapa contributing two goals, while Pankaj and Rishab scoring one goal each.

In another match, the team of St. Stephen School, Togan, beat Delhi Public School by 4-3.

Chandigarh Golfing Tour from December 21
 76 players from 11 countries to participate

A total of 76 golfers from 11 countries have confirmed their participation in the 8th Chandigarh Golfing Tour to be played in the tricity at the Chandigarh Golf Club, Panchkula Golf Club and the Forest Hill Golf Resort from December 21 to 23.

The Chandigarh Golf Association will witness a huge turnout of NRIs for the championship.

DP Azad, chairman of the Media Committee, said the entry list was expected to cross the seventh edition mark of 110 entrants. Players from Australia, Singapore, UK, Dubai, Brazil, France, New Zealand, Netherlands and Kuwait had already confirmed their entry.

The event will begin with a staggered tee-off at the Chandigarh Golf Club on December 21. The tournament will then shift to the nine-hole Forest Hill Golf Resort for the second round with the Panchkula Golf Club hosting the third round and the prize distributing function on December 23.

Besides the gross scoring for the overall champion, there will be contests in the 0-14 and 15-24 handicap categories, with winner and runners-up prizes in each category, both gross and net.

In all three rounds, there will be prizes for the longest drive and closest to pin. The overall best gross scorer will be declared the overall champion. Besides, the team scoring the best gross and net will also be awarded prizes.

The Tagore House won the overall championship during the Annual Sports Day of KV-1, Chandimandir Cantonment, held here. The Shivaji House and the Raman House stood second and third, respectively.

The meet began with a march past. Later, various field and track events, including long jump, shot put, cricket ball throw, 800 m, 400 m, 200 m races and relay races, were organised on the occasion.

Chandigarh, December 16
The cagers of CRPF defeated Air Force by 72-46 to win the men’s title of the Senior State Basketball Championship held at New Public School, Sector 18, here today.

The team sealed the first quarter at 35-25. Pawan (23 points) and PC Rajesh (19 points) guided the team to victory, while RK Sharma (12 points) and Santosh (13 points) were the main contributors from the losing side.

The Jugraj Coaching Centre attained third place in the competition.

In the final of the women category, the GGSCW Club defeated the GNPS Club, Sector 36, by 59-30. Kiran (18 points) and Harkiran (12 points) scripted win for the team.

The team of the PGGC Club, Sector 11, secured third place in the competition.

In the match of girls (U-14) event, Kirti Soni of Hansraj Public School routed Ishdeep of Carmel Convent School by 6-2. A total of 75 students from various schools and clubs participated in the tournament.
