VOICE of conviction
He has delighted us with the likes of Chaiyya Chaiyya and Jai Ho. And now, well-known singer Sukhwinder Singh is on a singing spree
Ashima Batish

The career span of celebrated singer Sukhwinder Singh can be divided into two distinct periods: the last six months and eleven long years prior to them. During the last six months, he has worked with a different strategy and has been open to all offers, sang for new music composers. As a result, he has sung some seventy tracks in this time-period as against just ninety in over a decade!

The decision to change the approach was made after keenly observing the new music directors’ passion for music. “I have always been very choosy about picking songs but in the last one year, I realised that the music industry in Bollywood is experimenting and evolving. I wanted to be a part of the whole process and hence contributed in the best way possible,” says the singer, who is all set to perform at the closing ceremony of Kabaddi World Cup in Ludhiana.

Besides his favourite composers, Vishal Shekhar and AR Rahman, he is now working with names that are unheard of in the industry. “For example, I sang Banjaara of Ek Tha Tiger, which was composed by Sohail Sen.” Almost every film that has released in the last few months has at least one track by him, be it Singham, Bol Bachchan, Kya Superkool Hain Hum or upcoming films Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola as well as Dabangg 2. “I want to share my knowledge and experience with those struggling to make a mark in the industry. I love working on new ideas and young directors have plenty of them; the execution part is tough because they lack the experience and that’s where my role becomes important,” Sukhwinder shares the reason behind the shift in his career.

The singer who made a contribution to Slumdog Millionaire’s Oscar run two years back doesn’t hold a grudge against AR Rahman anymore. However, he doesn’t deny that there was a cold war between the two. “Rahman got the award for the Best Song category, which was always received by the singer earlier.” But all’s well that ends well! The two are working again, performing live together and Rahman has even asked him to sing those tracks that were earlier sung by others.

With live shows, recording a number every alternate day and travelling around, life has become extremely busy for Sukhwinder but he doesn’t rue it. Known for his forthright attitude and flamboyance, without mingling words, he shares his de-stressing formula, “I love flirting. I flirt with my friends for two hours every morning and then I am set to work. If mornings are loaded with work, then the flirting schedule shifts in the evening, but I don’t miss out on it.”

At the closing ceremony of the Kabaddi World Cup, he has plans to treat his fans with one of his oldest tracks Munda South Hall Da. Even if the popularity of Kabaddi doesn’t match that of other sports, he feels, in Punjab it helps fight drug abuse. “It sets an aim for youngsters and enables them to channelise their energy positively.” His ever popular Chaiyya Chaiyya and Jai Ho will of course top the list of songs he will perform at the event.

Direct to the point
Manpriya Singh

You can either make a good film or a bad film; you can’t make a hit film…movie-making is a business of magic rather than logic…it is more important to have luck rather than talent…there have been bad films that have done well…while there have been some good films that haven’t done well at all…the pearls of wisdom for the entertainment industry are never-ending.

“You follow the rules and you can never make a film,” Ravinder Prashar, Chandigarh-bred, Mumbai-based assistant director, who is back to attend a workshop at the Morph Academy for acting, tries decoding as to what goes into making of a good film. “I’ll be teaching them that presentation is the key to success. It’ll be right from the history of motion pictures starting from 1895 to the art of presentation till 2012.”

It’s just a low-down to some of the tricks of the trade that he picked up while on the job. Says Ravinder, who has been an assistant director to Mahesh Bhatt during the making of Jakham, Dushmam and Sangarsh, “We have given the film industry an industry status, but it is not an industry. Nobody will offer a loan if you want to make a film. Whereas banks will easily finance if you want to start any other joint venture.”

There are no rules, no formulas, no recipes, only some frantic shots at hitting the bull’s eye, mildly guided by public tastes at the moment; for instance, the current inclination to jump onto the Punjabi comedy bandwagon. “I’ll be making a bi-lingual film, Punjabi and Hindi, soon. It will be an out-and-out comedy and will feature all the fresh faces from this region.”

He adds, “I debuted as a director with Kumar Sanu’s film in 2009 titled Yeh Sunday Kyun Aata Hai…how your film runs…is all about magic on the audience rather than logic of the makers.”

After the bi-lingual, it’s time to venture to crossover cinema. “I would really like to make a film on the lines of works by Mira Nair. I’m really inspired and influenced by her. We are working on the subject, but that’ll be my fourth or fifth film.”

In between, there is yet another trivia. “Do you know that more than 80 per cent of the portfolios that come to Mahesh Bhatt’s production house are those of Punjabis?” Taking a cue, he is here to cater to those who can’t afford to go to Mumbai.

Colour code
From bright hues of orange to neon shades to the ever popular black, the colour palette for winter outfits is varied
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

From transparent spring hues to rich autumn colours to deep drak shades of winter, 2012-13 is replete with exquisite colours. It is shades of orange, purple, blue, auburn, canary-yellow, red and of course black that are popular for the season. And considering that this is Christmas time, the colour palette of male and female outfits is much broader than the general trends.

"Winter in last two years was dominated by shades of black, grey and purple but this season we see a burst of colour. Colour blocking is a rage internationally, but we are slowly lapping it up; the trend of coloured denim leggings and trousers has especially caught the fancy of fashionistas," says designer Abhi from the designer duo of Abhi and Rahul.

He adds, "The fatal elegance of black is still in vogue and nothing can change it, but one can use it as a contrast for bright colours this season. Orange is another hot colour and this one is going close to the tangerine colour or subdued like the dry autumn leaves."

Well, the 'pop colour' concept gets pronounced this season and internationally we see garments in lime-green, bright-pink, canary-yellow in vogue, but back here we find lot of ochre, dusty-pink and terecotta brown on display. "We see a lot of cardigans, sweaters and knitwear in deep blue, teel, black and grey this season. Neon shades are also in and it's the auburn 'Venetian' shade of red colour that is quite a hit this season," says an employee of Benetton.

While the fashionable acid-neon yellow colour changes to a deeper and warmer colour of mustard this season, velvet hues too are a trend to keep an eye on. The palette ranges from milky to black haze with deep emerald.

"Royal dark blue colour competes with a piercing turquoise and both are popular. Orange, magenta, fluorescent green, yellow and dark to dull green are the colour of the season," says Indeep Sukarchakia from The Closet, Sector 11. While designers have diluted bright and juicy colours with neutral shades; gentle peach, light beige are the most fashionable shades to team up with bright hues. And, as always, the scale of grey colour is extremely popular — from the most light to almost black shades, so pick your shade for a chic yet chilly winter.

Wing Commander (retd) Vinay Puri shares notes on his debut project — Sadi Gali Aaya Karo — as a producer
Jasmine Singh

It is his love for his brother, love for the people of Punjab and faith in the dreams of others that made retired Wing Commander Vinay Puri produce his debut project Sadi Gali Aaya Karo, set for a December 14 release.

When other producers around sit down to organise money matters, this man doesn't have to fret and fume. "It is all thanks to my background that helps me in organising and keeping everything in place. I might have not been liked by many on the sets, but I guess they got used to it eventually," he says.

Sadi Gali Aaya Karo, a romantic comedy directed by Pali, has an interesting take on the issue of both the states of Punjab and Haryana trying to get Chandigarh as their capital city. "It is a very different story and the treatment has been unique, very Bollywood kind. I made sure that the entire project, right from the start, was handled by the best people in this industry."

Quiz him on an ex-defence person making movies and he laughs, "My brother, Anuj Puri always wanted to act; even when he was pursuing his engineering in Pune. So, I decided I had to do something for him. Sadi Gali Aaya Karo is the launch pad for him." The movie stars Anuj Puri in the lead along with Nav Bajwa and Zoya Afroz.

Tri bandhas

The Sanskrit word bandha means to hold, tighten, or lock. Traditionally, bandhas are jaalandhar bandha, uddiyana bandha and moola bandha are practiced in the throat, abdomen and perineum regions in our body. When practiced all together is known as maha bandha. Bandhas may be practiced individually or incorporated with mudras and pranayama practices. The aim is to lock the pranas in particular areas and to redirect their flow into sushumna nadi for the purpose of spiritual awakening.

Moola bandha (Anal lock)

Moola means 'root' or 'source' in Sanskrit. The other meaning of moola  is also 'anal'. The first chakra, Mooladhara chakra, resides at this location and moola bandha activates this chakra. Once the chakra is activated the pranic energy starts rising fast towards the top most chakra.

How to do

  • Sit down on the floor.
  • Come into siddhasana.
  • Your left heel should press against the perineum. Then focus the awareness on the perineal region.
  • Look in front or you can keep your eyes closed.
  • Aware of the natural breath for few breaths. Now exhale slowly.
  • Contract your abdomen to lock the anal opening.
  • Immediately contract the external and the internal sphincter muscles strongly.
  • Simultaneously draw the sphincter muscles up.
  • Intensify the contraction process.
  • Hold the contraction for 10 seconds.
  • Slowly relax the sphincter muscles and do normal breathing.
  • You can start with five rounds and then increase by one per week to raise the turns to 10 times.

Benefits: It energises the mooladhara chakra and thus helps to awaken the kundlini shakti. It bestows many physical, mental and spiritual benefits.

  • Urogenital disorders get cured with this bandha.
  • This yoga bandha is beneficial for piles, fistula and prostatic hypertrophy patients.
  • The pelvis and organs of this region can benefit from moola bandha.

Uddiyana bandha

The word uddiyana  means to rise up or to fly upward.  This lock helps to direct prana into sushumna nadi so that it flows upward to sahasrara chakra.

It can be practiced in a standing position or in padmasana or sukhasana. Perform it only on an empty stomach, and only after an exhalation.

How to do

  • Stand erect with the feet about half a meter apart. Keep eyes open.
  • Inhale deeply through the nostrils.
  • Bend forward from the waist and exhale completely. Try to empty the lungs as much as possible.
  • Keep the spine straight and bend the knees slightly. Place the palms on the thighs just above the knees. Make sure the arms are straight.
  • In this position there is an automatic contraction of the abdominal region.
  • Bend the head forward but don’t press the chin against the chest.
  • Ensure you don’t inhale.
  • Hold this position for a comfortable length of time without strain.
  • Release the abdominal lock and relax the chest, straighten the knees and raise the head to come to standing position. Now inhale and exhale through nostrils.

Benefits

  • Strengthens the abdominal muscles and diaphragm.
  • Massages abdominal viscera, the solar plexus, and the heart and lungs.
  • Increases gastric fire; improves digestion, assimilation, and elimination; and purifies the digestive tract of toxins.
  • Stimulates blood circulation in the abdomen and blood flow to the brain.
  • Stimulates and lifts the energy of the lower belly (apana vayu), to unite it with the energies localized in the navel (samana vayu) and heart (prana vayu).

Jalandhara Bandha

Jalan means ‘net’ and dhara means ‘stream’ or ‘flow’. This bandha is the lock which controls the network of nadis in the neck.

How to do

This bandha can be practiced after inhalation or after exhalation here it’s explained with inhalation.

  • Sit in padmasana with head and spine straight.
  • Place the palms on the knees.
  • Close the eyes and relax the whole body.
  • Inhale slowly, deeply and retain the breath inside, bend the head forward and press the chin against the chest.
  • Keep your arm straight, hunch the shoulders upwards and forward, retain this position for 10 seconds. Do not strain. Raise the head and exhale.

Benefits

  • The bandha is beneficial to thyroid and parathyroid glands.
  • Regular practice of the bandha can get rid of a double chin.
  • Blood circulation in the throat and adjacent region is increased.
  • People with throat problems can apply this bandha for treatment.
  • Spinal nerve centers are stimulated.

A still from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

A journey to reclaim the stolen treasure makes for the plot of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Director Peter Jackson’s film stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage. Based on JRR Tolkien’s work, this first part of the trilogy opened to high expectations this Friday.

Just fine

I found the book better. The plot has many twists and turns which have not been that well captured. Compared to Lord of the Rings, I found it dull.

Sidhant Suri, class X student

Adventurous tale

It is quite a bit of adventure. I enjoyed it thoroughly, specially the awesome use of technology.

Saurabh Sharma, anchor

Little lengthy

I found it an average, good one-time watch. It’s the unyielding storyline that slows down the otherwise interesting plot.

Sandeep Singh, entrepreneur

Humorous take

It’s a fun film, high on humour. Dwarfs and the strange people keep one engrossed.

Amanjeet Singh, govt employee

Just awesome

This movie has it all — thrill, suspense, adventure and comedy.

STAR TRACK
Anushka Sharma lashes out!
Anushka Sharma
Fiery red: Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma is not amused at all by the stories comparing her to Deepika Padukone and other actresses. She pours out her feelings.

First Choice

None of my "friends" talk to papers and say I was X's first choice or Y's first choice. I am just really happy that I am working with Yash Chopra, Vishal Bhardwaj, Rajkumar Hirani and Anurag Kashyap back to back and I have signed (or done) their movies. I never pull anyone down. I don't throw garbage at anyone, so I would like people to stop throwing garbage at me. I cannot do what other actresses do and they cannot do what I do.

On Deepika Padukone

There is no comparison or link between us. She has been around far longer and has done more movies. I have been choosy with my movies. I have not snatched any brand endorsement from her. I have enough brands and I do not need to reduce my fee because they pay me what I demand, happily so! My brands have renewed their contracts with me and I don't think that is happening with too many other heroines.

Emma Stone
Emma Stone

Actress Emma Stone hit rock bottom after suffering severe break-outs as a teenager. She was put on prescription medication to combat her spots. Her pimples returned as she struggled to shoot her first lead role in Easy A.

"I am actually pretty interested in skin care, because I had bad hormonal acne when I was 17, and they put me on acne medication for it," a website quoted Stone as saying. "After two months of medication, I went off of it, and since then, my skin, my mouth, my lips, my eyes are all so dry. Then, I had stress acne when I was 20, when I did Easy A, which they kindly video-airbrushed out of the movie. "But I realised how debilitating and embarrassing it can be to have cystic acne. So, I am really interested in the biology of what makes up acne and how to work on it from the outside, too," she added. —IANS

Call of the wild
Poster of Ek Thi Daayan
Animal kingdom: Poster of Ek Thi Daayan

Vishal Bhardwaj and Ekta Kapoor's forthcoming, Emraan Hashmi-starerr, Ek Thi Daayan, is a spooky take on witches. However, director Kannan Iyer was in for a surprise as the set seemed to have become a visiting ground for animals.

When Kannan first began shooting for the film, at Film City (which is a thickly populated forest area), the sets were infested with reptiles from nowhere.  The entire set had to be cleaned which meant that a lot of time was wasted and the shoot was delayed.

The snakes were followed by a leopard, who made its way on to the sets and forest officials had to be called to finally trap the animal. This was not the last time. Another leopard was found for the second time when the crew members came on the sets early in the day. The shoot had to be cancelled till the ferocious animal was taken away.

Then a pack of monkeys also came on the sets and created a lot of ruckus. Finally extra security was called in to control them and get them out of the sets.

Tanuj Garg, CEO of Balaji Motion Pictures, says, “We had to call in extra security to get them out. But in a few minutes, they were back. There was some delay, but we couldn’t help it.” Filmcity is a popular shooting area for the film industry and no film set has ever seen such large number of visitors from the animal kingdom.

Romantic saga: Taylor Swift

Country star Taylor Swift says she is obsessed with love. The 23-year-old singer, who is currently said to be dating Harry Styles from One Direction, has had bad relationship experiences, but says they have not put her off wanting a fairytale end to a relationship, reported a publication.

"I think about love all the time. I have done since I was able to comprehend what love was, I daydream about it all the time. There was a relationship that was an extreme let-down, one that was a betrayal, one where I got cheated on, one where I had my self confidence chipped away piece by piece... But even after your heart explodes into a million pieces and you're thinking, 'Why did this have to happen?' You make eye contact with someone across the room and it clicks – and bang, you're in love again," she said.

Despite her various romantic failures, Swift has learned something from every relationship.

"I'd like to think I don't have to learn the same lesson twice. As I move on from men who hurt me, or were just not right, I think I can start to narrow it down. That's the hope anyway," she added. —PTI

Karan Tacker, the chocolate boy from Ek Hazaron Mein Meri Behna Hain, is a man of his words. The actor, who is the host of Star Plus' Sau Saal Cinema Ke, a tribute to the Indian film industry on completing 100 years, had to leave the shoot midway because of some family emergency in Pune.

Knowing that the shoot had to be completed in a day, Karan went to Pune and came back the same day directly on the sets.

Not only did Karan shoot the entire night and finish his part, but he also made it certain that his next day shoot schedule of the show was not disrupted.
