Nothing controversial!
There are tomes of literature that exist on Veena Malik, perhaps each chapter covering a controversy and each one of them in sync with projecting a certain image. For reputation precedes the actress, item girl, reality show queen…controversy's favourite child. "I'm not unhappy with the image I have. It's not like I have control over my image. In reality, I'm a very reserved girl, don't like noise; don't like parties. But people think what they want to think," she shrugs, while adjusting her dull, mustard saree.
"I wanted to get ready for you guys at ease, with leisure. But this is what I could manage," adds Veena, who is in Chandigarh shooting for Punjabi film Jatts in Golmaal. "I'm just so busy, don't get any time. Never had the opportunity to go back to my country since you guys love me so much. Finished shooting for six films this year. I'd say it's a beautiful phase of my career." It's been a long journey since 2007, when 'she wasn't sure whether she wanted to stay here, forever' while shooting for her first Punjabi film Pind Di Kudi. "After 2007, I started taking my career seriously. At that time, I wasn't quite sure whether I wanted to be here." And that's how the second attempt at Punjabi film industry through Jatts in Golmaal came to be her debut. "I have a special appearance in the film. There's a lot of glamour in the role and that's all I can say." Blame it on the controversy or attribute it to the talent, since the reality show Bigg Boss, there's never really been a problem getting work. "I was bombarded with offers from reality shows, but I wanted to do something very different and exciting." For instance something that connects or divides the two countries - cinema and cricket! "I am honoured to have got the opportunity to host a cricket series. In both India and Pakistan, everyone is a cricket fan. It's like religion and it runs in our blood." Speaking of which, her country Pakistan, that is; the actress launches into an extempore for two minutes on the political instability back home. "Given the current political scenario, I doubt if I'd ever vote for anybody in the country. Maybe, Imran Khan raises some hopes but that could also be because he hasn't been tried so far…whenever there's a martial law in any country, it is set back by fifty years… but things are changing in Pakistan slowly." Meanwhile, she's happy with the India experience, working and expressing her opinions. There's a string of films that happened this year and are awaiting release. "I have Zindagi 50-50 coming up. Then I have Mumbai 125 kms, which has been shot in a 3D format. Then I have Supermodel lined up with good friend Ashmit Patel." That completes the circle and brings us back to yet another chapter of
her life…reminds of another controversy! manpriya@tribunemail.com

Together we can
Gigs, travel, live shows, collaborations…the life of a musician is definitely very busy. The days of sitting inside a recording studio, releasing albums and then waiting for them till the platinum jubilee are long gone.
Take a clue from Hari & Sukhmani, Folkelectronica Band from Chandigarh, which will be featuring in the upcoming episode of Dewarist (December 23), a music documentary travel show. They have a jam-packed travelling schedule that takes them to Norway next year, followed by loads of gigs and more live shows. Life of a musician did we say! "Musicians are now known by gigs, collaborations and live shows," shares Hari, sitting at Satva-26, Chandigarh. A quick photo-session and Hari is ready to set the music rolling. The band got wide acclaim after their live act at the Coke Studio Season 2. "Collaborations like these allow us to evolve as musicians. It helps us improve," they echo. Hari & Sukhmani jammed-in with Arshad Khan and percussionist Fakhroddin Gafri at Coke Studio 2. "For Dewarist, we jammed-in with Trilok Gurtu, who is a well-known international percussionist. It was a wonderful experience as we had to prepare the track from the scratch in flat three days," says Hari. The duo plugged in with Trilok where they plucked in lyrics from Bulleh Shah. "Trilok needs no introduction; he carries almost 150 kg of instruments; so you can well understand what an experience it would have been." Their up, close and personal moments continue with collaborations. "We collaborated with the Pakistani band Noori, which performed for the first time at Blue Frog, New Delhi. We have also done an interesting work with Mandeep Sethi, a San Francisco-based rapper. Collaborations are about bringing out the best," says the musician, who treats each song as a project. "The idea is to take it to the next level." The duo finds inspiration in Bulleh Shah and Kabir. It is the gratification that they take back home after such a creative venture. Smiles Hari, "I take back with me lots of confidence; collaborations have obviously made a lot of difference to us." Life gets busier, and music gets experimental with time. Hari would rather collaborate on a track; create something unique and different, than cutting an album. "Never say never; but cutting an album is a job where one has to be on television and in the news all the time," he adds. As the cliché for music goes, it doesn't know any barriers. Collaborations take it to the next level. "We jammed-in with Noorie, which is a rock band. So, each time we collaborate, musicians bring in their touch." Hari & Sukhmani will be performing at Satva on ear marked dates. “Our episode on Dewarist has been shot at Vaseela, and it was one of the best and most encouraging experience,” says Hari who looks good in his new makeover. The life of a musician as we say! jasmine@tribunemail.com (They will be performing at
Satva, Sector 26, Chandigarh, on Dec 19, Jan 9, Jan 23, Feb 6 and Feb 20)

Booty shakers on New Year’s Eve
Many a Bollywood newbie are shaking their hips to rake in the moolah at New Year's Eve performances. None of the A-list actresses are part of this gang. Read on to know how much these good-lookers are making by dancing for just a few minutes!
Parineeti Chopra
She slashed her performance rates to grab the attention of event managers. She will dance to the songs of Ishaqzaade and Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl with co-star Arjun Kapoor at an event in Lonavla and will be paid Rs 10 lakhs for that! Good going!
Prachi Desai
She will dance at a club in Mumbai and Rs 51 lakh will be her remuneration. Though she has got offers in the past, this is the first time she took it up. Her hit songs are from Rock On and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai and she has not had a film release in a long time.
Sunny Leone
She was flooded with offers and chose an event in New Delhi. She is being given a whopping Rs1 crore for her performance because she would not settle for less. She has no songs so will dance to item songs that have become popular this year like Fevicol Se and others. Expect a huge crowd to watch her!
Sameera Reddy
We do not understand what is so great about her but she has the odd hit item song every now and then! She is being paid Rs 50 lakhs for ten minutes at an event in Lucknow. That should take care of a few shopping trips to London and Paris and some of her sleepwalking treatment.
Shweta Tiwary
The television actress is the queen of Bhojpuri cinema and she will dance at an event in Dehradun for nearly 50 lakh INR! She has a few Bollywood item songs to her credit.

What's next for Sridevi?
After the super success of English Vinglish, both Boney Kapoor and R Balki want to do another film with Sridevi, but the actress hasn't made up her mind yet about her next step.
While Balki plans to cast the actress in a sequel to English Vinglish, Boney plans to produce another film that would do justice to his wife's tremendous on-screen presence. "Sri is not against doing another film right away, but she wants her next film to be as special as her comeback film. In fact, she is waiting for both to come up with a script that would take her beyond English Vinglish," said a source. Contrary to what is being rumoured, the actress observes, "I'd like to take a break, spend time with my husband and daughters. I've only been seeing them sporadically." According to a source, the actress just doesn't want to jump into any project but wants one that would take her comeback advantage to another level. English Vinglish should and must not be a one-off success for Sridevi.

Sister act
Priyanka Chopra and Parineeti Chopra are extremely close to each other and swear by each other. They consult each other and have pet names for each other. Contrary to popular belief, they are not competing with each other and always root for each other and mutually admire each other publicly, no matter what. And Parineeti is much junior compared to PC who has been around for a long time and is happy to advice and guide her cousin.
During the promotions of Ishaqzaade, Parineeti Chopra kept saying her sister is the best actor and she should get the best actor (female) award this year. Priyanka Chopra has been lauded for her performance of Jhilmil in Barfi and will be a front runner in the awards season. Similarly Priyanka Chopra during the promotions of Barfi kept lauding the performance of Parineeti Chopra in Ishaqzaade saying she should win the best debutante award because Ishaqzaade is her first leading role. Other sisters who support each other in Bollywood are Karisma and Kareena Kapoor but they are real ones. Kajol and Rani Mukerji are cousins and they do not exactly get along. Kajol's real sister Tanisha is not getting anywhere in her film career. Shamita and Shilpa Shetty also did not reach the top as actresses but they are close and supportive of each other too. Priyanka will be seen in Krishh 3, Zanjee next year along with her international music album's launch. Parineeti is doing Maneesh Sharma's next film as of now and several endorsements. She is still touted to be the next big thing because she is explosive as an actress on screen!

Weighty issues!
Rumour has it that Sonakshi Sinha had to opt out of Race 2 or was asked to leave because the role required her to lose weight and wear sexy clothes and look glamorous and Western, something which she would not (or could not?) do. The reason cited was date issues and Sonakshi refuses to talk about it!
Sonakshi maintains that she is very happy with her weight and plus size. She says that people find fault with her regarding her weight because they cannot hold her acting and dancing skills against her! Umm, she has not really acted in her mindless blockbuster movies. She is simply eye candy and some of her dance moves are pretty vulgar. She plays a mother-to-be in Dabangg 2 so the weight suits her role.

Three cheers for style
Most of us enjoy a unique sense of style. Shibani Chopra expresses herself by continually experimenting with her hair and dressing. This psychology honors student from DAV-10 Chandigarh is a cheerful and carefree person. Her take on fashion… Your sense of style? Smart and classy Latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories? Dress from Forever New and Gant Brand crazy or street pick-up? I am crazy for both branded as well as street stuff. I prefer something totally different and yet classy to fill my wardrobe. Who would be your style icon? Lady Gaga and Rihana, I love their style and uniqueness. Who do you think is the worst dressed celebrity? Ekta Kapoor. She really needs to dress up according to her age and I don’t understand what style statement she is trying to make. Which look would you prefer – sporty, chic or glamorous? I would prefer chic and glamorous look. One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension… Why girls wear dresses over jeans? That is so boring and not at all stylish. Your take on accessories.. I love to wear neckpieces and earrings and carry sling bags. Given a choice which designer would you like to be dressed by? Sabyasachi for traditional wear and Vikram Phadnis for the western wear. What gives you a high on confidence level? High waist pants or nice fitted dresses. — As told to Mona |

Over to Oats
Kandla Nijhowne Good health and oats go hand in hand, providing much needed fibre and protein to our diet. They help keep hunger pangs at bay and lower 'bad' cholesterol. I keep a powdered batch of oats ready in my kitchen cupboard. It’s a handy ingredient to thicken soups, sauces, even curries. Suddenly the market is flooded with oats' products! It seems the consumers have finally woken up to the goodness of these little grains. So get rolling! Pick a pack of rolled oats and cook this delicious batch of idlis. I add some chopped dill (soaa) to the mix. Suit yourself. Add methi leaves or fresh dhaniya if you want to. These steamed idlis are ready in a blink and go really well with a tomato garlic chutney! Eyes on you
Ritu Kolentine The eyes can speak for themselves; so it’s not surprising to note that make-up also focuses on the eyes. And there are so many things available nowadays to help enhance the eyes, including eye shadows, mascara and accessories such as eye extensions. Eye mascara enhances eyes by elongating the eye lashes and accentuating their natural beauty. Here are a few dos and don’ts. Applying eye mascara is easy. Often it is paired with an eye-lash curler. The eyelash curler is used first to help curl out or flip out the eye-lashes for easier application. Usually, the eye-lash curler is heated first so that it can curl out the lashes more effectively and ensure that the curl would stand for a long period of time. Curling the eyes usually takes a couple of minutes or so before it is taken off the lashes. You can then start applying mascara gently. You should only apply eye mascara when in front of a mirror, which effectively reflects your eye-lashes. Moreover, you should be very careful; one wrong move can cause you to stick the mascara right into eyes. Never share the eye mascara with another person. This is very unhygienic and can cause infections. (Kolentine is a Chandigarh-based make-up expert) |

Chatter box
Natasha Sharma, who was last seen in the famous show Na Aana Is Des Laado, is looking forward to making a comeback on television. However, the actress has high expectations post Laado. We caught up with her for a quick chat.
What kept you away from television all this while? Laado has given me all the success I have achieved till date. So I have to take up something that is performance oriented and will help me become a better actor. What are your expectations? I would love to do a commercial family drama, with a good channel and production house. A good production house really matters a lot as every project is about team work and you need good writers, directors and crew to make a show successful. You were also seen on Comedy Circus. Any plans of switching over to comedy? No. Apart from Comedy Circus, I don't think there is anything good when it comes to comedy on television. It is very difficult to execute exactly what you have in the script. What are you favourite TV shows? I love Junoon- Aisi Nafrat Toh Kaisa Ishq. I love to watch Bigg Boss; it is extremely entertaining. Another show I like is Balika Vadhu. What's next for you? At the moment, I am busy with a friend's wedding in Delhi. Once I return to Mumbai, I will start looking for a better role.
Vrajesh comes clear!
Vrajesh Hirjee is quite happy with his journey in Bigg Boss. Now that he has been evicted, he talks about his stay in the house and co-contestants. Did you enjoy your stay? Yes, I did. I am very grateful to the Bigg Boss team for getting this opportunity. Admittedly in the beginning, I was a little hesitant. But I am glad that I took it up for I really feel that I have moved a step forward in life on the personal level. What other change you saw in yourself? Staying inside the Bigg Boss' house helped me get close to nature. The house is in Lonavala and it's very quiet there. I felt the need to connect with my spiritual side. My time in the Lonavala made me contemplate on the same. What do you have to say about Rajeev's PDA with his ex-wife Delnaaz Irani? I told him that what he is doing is ridiculous and you should not discuss your life on television. What do you have to say about your fight with Sapna Bhavnani? I only screamed back at her for she raised her voice. Also, I can't understand her volte-face. For six weeks, she kept screaming that she wants to go home and then suddenly she wants to stay on to protect Karishma Kotak who came back. But it's ok, she wants to win but then why not say it openly. Just stop pretending. Who do you think will win? I think Niketan. Rajeev isn't aware of what Niketan is doing. I guess he is keeping his sanity intact which is normally difficult to maintain in a pressure cooker situation. He is the best bet according to me.
Another high for Karan
Karan Kundra, the youth icon who is currently seen in Channel V's show The Serial and Gumraah, has been rated the third most loved non-fiction TV personality among youth in the recent Ormax Media Report survey on Characters India Loves. What is incredible about this achievement is that he is just behind Amitabh Bachchan (KBC) and Salman Khan (Bigg Boss)! While both of them have a long repertoire of films and therefore a huge fan base, it is really praise worthy for a young TV actor to have made it to this position right behind them.
New found love
His split from wife Danielle Spencer was made public a few weeks ago, but it looks like Russell Crowe is already moving on after he was spotted cuddling ex-wife of Billy Joel. The 48-year-old is said to be "casually seeing" TV food critic Katie Lee - ex-wife of Joel. The pair was spotted cuddling at the Greenwich Hotel in New York at 3am on Sunday morning. Lee wed Joel in October 2004 when she was 23 and he was 55 after a one year courtship. However, it appeared the 32 year age gap eventually caused problems and they split in 2009. Meanwhile, Crowe's apparent romance comes just a few months after it was revealed he had quietly separated from singer wife Spencer after nine years of marriage. — PTI
Feeling blessed!
Samiksha Bhatnagar, who is currently seen in Baal Veer on SAB TV and Veera on Star Plus, is on a high these days with two most popular shows in her kitty. She might not have enough time for herself, but manages to do what she likes when she is not shooting. Talking about it, Samiksha says, "I am super busy with both my shows. But I am enjoying this phase of life. I love to read, watch movies and hang around with friends. I love to shop too. I feel blessed to be part of shows like Veera and Baal Veer. Children are very talented, and are a bundle of energy. They are fun to work with" On her future plans, the actress states, "I am focussing on my television career at the moment. TV is the fastest growing medium and I enjoy being part of it. Hope I will be able to contribute well to it."
No nonsense girl
Actress Sonarika Bhadoria, who plays Parvati in Devon Ke Dev Mahadev, seems to have taken her role of the powerful Goddess a bit too seriously. The actress, like her on-screen character, can create a chaos if you irritate her. In fact, we hear that the entire unit is cautious of getting into her bad books. She recently got a spot boy fired from the show after he dared to crack a joke at her. "Sonarika had asked the spot boy to get her some chocolates. While giving her the chocolates, he said, “Chocolate khaogi, moti ho jaogi”. This comment made in a light mood was enough to annoy the actress. She yelled and hurled abuses at him and straight away ordered the unit members to fire him. The poor guy lost his job," informs a source from the sets. After repeated attempts, Sonarika remained unavailable for comment.

Warming up
Khiladi 786 was among the year's biggest releases but it is taking time to set the box office on fire. It has time till Dabangg 2 releases on December 21. It has collected more than 35 crore so far because of the music, decent reviews and good word of mouth publicity.
Game is on
The next leg of the schedule of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will be shot in Thailand. It is a crucial sequence in the film where Farhan's character will be shown training and taking part in an international race. So the entire crew will be there for the shooting and Farhan is paying even more attention to his diet and exercise regime.
Secret Santa
Aamir Khan has delayed the shooting of Dhoom 3 so that Katrina Kaif can visit her family in London for Christmas and New Year's Eve which is something she looks forward to every year as it is the only holiday she takes. She is touched by his sweet and kind gesture.
Going Glam
Deepika Padukone does not like it at all when people say that glamorous roles do not require acting from the heroine. Well, one has to work hard on the body and styling and then just pout and flutter eyelashes and look pretty! How hard can that be for a supermodel! Sometimes she says silly things and she has been harping on this for a long time! Go on honey... |

The year ahead
If your birthday is December 13...
A chance to spend some quiet time with your own self will suddenly present itself. Resist the urge to fill this gap in your schedule with errands. Instead, take a nap, go for a walk, or update your diary. A class will cost more than you expected. You might want to consider dropping out. It's not fair to hit you with hidden charges. If you protest, the powers that be might revert to their original price structure. Taking out an insurance policy is strongly advised. Protect your resources. This birthday should help make you a better manager and organiser, but it may also give you a tendency to dominate people a bit. You will be more responsible and self-disciplined. A stagnant phase of 2013 will bother you. Do not let this put you down as things will soon go smoothly once more. You'll be very attentive to things that seem significant and try to take the right measures to improve your relationship. A situation that you've been passing over deserves a closer look. If something seems a little out of the ordinary to you, mention it to your partner. Studying a subject you love gives you a new lease of life. Although you're not a fast learner, you never forget a skill or fact once you've acquired it. Right now, using your artistic talent to create beautiful environments is your greatest passion. Whether this means studying landscape design, interior decorating or Feng Shui is immaterial. The important thing is that you find an outlet for this impulse. Your studies can launch a lucrative career. Career issues will be as usual. Do not get upset and bide your time, as very soon you will get an opportunity to present your side to the seniors. A quiet and calm approach will sort out things to the satisfaction of all concerned. You will get slimmer this year. Regular health checkups and evening walk will keep you fit. By 2015 you will build your own house. Mood: Excited and really pumped. Compatible signs: Libra, Leo, Aquarius. Lucky colours: Crimson, Dark-grey. Lucky days: Wednesday. Lucky numbers: 4, 15, 24, 40, 45
You share your birthday with Amy Lynn Hartzler (née Lee; born December 13, 1981), best known as Amy Lee, who is an American singer, songwriter and classically trained pianist. She is co-founder and lead vocalist of the rock band Evanescence. Along with her contributions to Evanescence, Lee has also participated in numerous other musical projects, including Walt Disney Records' 2008 release of Out of the Shadows.
