Natipora accused seeks bail
Srinagar, December 9 The Natipora murder case involves killing of 65-year-old Ghulam Mohammad Shah of Budshah Nagar, Natipora allegedly by Almas Ara, her husband and two sons in July this year during a fight over dumping of garbage. In the bail application moved through her counsel, Almas has submitted that she is suffering from many ailments and her health may deteriorate further if she is kept under continued judicial custody. Following Shah’s killing on July 4 this year, Almas was arrested along with her husband Dr Maqsood Hussain Khan, his two sons - Sadat Hussain Khan and Fahad Hussain Khan, and sent to jail for allegedly murdering Shah. Almas, who is currently under judicial remand at District Jail Baramulla, in her bail application, has further stated that she has been falsely implicated in the case on the basis of a false and frivolous complaint. Her bail plea has been opposed by the complainant family and the local welfare committee, saying that granting her bail at this stage may influence the trial. “Our belief is that if the above mentioned accused is bailed out, she will surely tamper with the evidence of the case as well as influence the witnesses. We have full faith in justice and judiciary of the state and therefore appeal to the courts that she should not be set free on bail,” the local welfare committee has said in statement while objecting to the bail of accused Almas, which is listed for further hearing on December 11. Following the incident on July 4, the J-K Police had registered a case against the accused family under Section 302 (murder) and produced a chargesheet against the four accused of the family before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar. Subsequently, the CJM committed the case for trial to Sessions Court on September 8. The killing

Property worth crores destroyed in a major fire at Baramulla
Baramulla, December 9 Several furniture shops in the complex added fuel to the fire as the entire complex went up in flames in a few minutes, eyewitnesses said. A computer institute and an office of an NGO were also destroyed in the fire. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained, reports said. The Army soon pressed into service its fire tenders and the fire was brought under control after four hours. The locals hailed the efforts by the Army in dousing the flames. The fire tenders, the affected shopkeepers alleged, took more time than anticipated in reaching the spot. “The fire tenders had to cover less than one km but they took at least 40 minutes to reach the spot. The loss could have been minimised had the fire-fighting team reached the affected building in time,” said Habibullah, whose shop was destroyed in the fire. The incident set off panic in the town during the night hours and locals rushed to the spot. Another shopkeeper Bashir Ahmad said, “The fire could have been brought under control had the fire tenders reached the spot in time. The phone of the main fire station in Baramulla was not working and fire tenders from Delina station, 6 km from Baramulla, reached first.” The affected shopkeepers said the fire inflicted a loss of around four crore rupees. Meanwhile, in two separate fire incidents, at least five structures were gutted. According to police, timber shop of Mohammed Yousuf Najar at Fruit Mandi, Parimpora on the outskirts of Srinagar was complete damaged in the fire in the wee hours today. The fire was brought under control with the help of fire tenders and local police. Parimpora police has registered a case. The day temperature in the city was recorded at 12.9 degrees Celsius, which is three degrees above the normal for this time of the year. The weather department forecast suggested the minimum temperature around the city on Monday night will fall further to minus 2.0 degrees Celsius. Most parts of the valley had recorded a warm last night, with mercury remaining above the zero degree mark across the plains. At Pahalgam resort in south Kashmir, the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 3.0 degrees Celsius. The Ladakh region remains cut off from the rest of the state for most of the winter as heavy snow along the Srinagar-Leh road shuts access to the mountainous Ladakh. Kashmir valley is gearing up for a harsh winter, which is set to begin 11 days later, when 'Chillai Kalaan' - a 40-day long harshest phase of the season - begins. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in frontier Kupwara town in North Kashmir was recorded at minus 1.7 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature in South Kashmir’s Qazigund town was recorded at minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, the official said. Kashmir University goes for cost-cutting
Srinagar, December 9 Highly placed official sources told The Tribune that at a meeting chaired by the VC, Prof Talat Ahmad, it was decided that the facility of private vehicles would be withdrawn in case of HoDs, Deans and senior faculty members, as the university is reeling under an acute financial crunch. “Although a formal notification is yet to be issued, the private vehicle services are most likely to be barred from the next week onwards at the varsity. It had become pertinent as the university was unable to pay its employees their salaries on time,” an administrative official, wishing anonymity, said. After the directive is enforced, the private vehicles would be used only by the trio of VC, Registrar and Controller of Examinations. The decision, meanwhile, has not gone down well with senior teaching and non-teaching faculty members of Kashmir University. “Even in Jammu University and other state universities, senior staffers have been allotted the vehicles for private use. The university should come out with a way to tackle the crisis and not bar officials from using the facilities,” a senior faculty member said. |

‘Minor’ has been
languishing in police stations for 12 days
Srinagar, December 9 The boy, a resident of old city’s
Gojwara locality, has been detained under seven sections of the RPC. The
counsels on Friday moved a bail application at a local court and pleaded
that the boy was a juvenile under the law of land and international law. “He
is a law-abiding child. He never committed any offence or involved in
any activity prejudicial to the security of the state,” the
application stated. Makhdoomi said the court had granted bail to the
boy but ‘when his parents went to the Nowhatta police station, the
officer in charge rejected the bail application’. “This is not the
first time the police has violated the law, they should have sent the
boy to the juvenile home but instead they had kept him in the lock-up
for 10 days where he was beaten and tortured,” Makhdoomi claimed. No senior police official was immediately available for the comment. A police official at the Parimpora police station confirmed the boy is in their custody but said he has no idea about his age. The state government has come under criticism from human rights groups, including Amnesty International, for arresting teenaged boys and locking them in facilities which have no special childcare support. Last
week, the Amnesty International issued a statement asking the
authorities here to ‘halt the practice of arbitrary detentions in the
state, in particular of children’ and reiterated its call to the JK
government to amend the Juvenile Justice Act to bring it into a line
with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. |

Muharram mourning continues
Srinagar, December 9 He said the main procession at the summer capital would be taken out at the Shalimar area besides other Shia-dominated areas across the Valley. Members of the Shia community take out several processions throughout the Muharram month to mourn the sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his companions. However, the main procession is taken out on the 10th Muharram (Ashura). With the Ashura procession, which used to pass through city centre Lal Chowk, being banned by the government after the eruption of militancy
in the state, the Shias now take out processions in the interiors. While the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions is also mourned by the Sunni community, especially during Friday sermons, the Shias hold religious functions in this regard on a larger scale. Meanwhile, in view of tomorrow’s scheduled procession, the government has issued traffic restrictions at several parts. “Srinagar-bound vehicles from north Kashmir--- Kupwara, Handwara and Sopore--- will move via Hygan to Sumbal to HMT. Vehicles from Pattan will move to Srinagar via the Hartarth bridge to Khanpath to Shadipora to HMT. Heavy motor vehicles moving towards north Kashmir from Srinagar will move via Narbal and Magam to turn right near the SDPO office, Magam, to Kungumdara to Khore to Hanjiwara to Pattan,” a police official said. “Light vehicles moving towards north Kashmir from Srinagar will move to Baramulla via Narbal to Khanihama to Nooripora to Archanderhama to Gund Kjoja Qasim to Singpora Pattan,” he said. |
