Theft at four shops
Ambala, November 21 The burglars targeted a jewellery shop near the Jagadhri gate. The owner of the shop, Omkar Verma, said that he found locks of the shop broken when he came to open the shop this morning. He said that three jewellery sets and 20 silver bangles were found missing from the shop. The thieves also took away a cash of Rs. 4,000, he added. Thieves broke into three other shops in the area too, and took away cash. The police has registered separate cases and has started the investigation. Administration imposes ban on digging of wells till Jan 15
Fatehgarh Sahib, November 21 Deputy Commissioner Yashveer Mahajan issued an order under the Section 144 of CrPC in this regard. It mandates the permission of XEN, Water Supply and Sewerage Board, for undertaking any such work. These orders would remain in force till January 15. The orders were issued to avoid any mishap while digging of wells. Meanwhile, keeping in view the increase in number of accidents and deaths due to drowning in the canal and to prevent any untoward incident by the anti-social elements, the DC has also banned the movement of vehicles on the banks of the Bhakra canal. Mahajan has also directed the cyber cafe owners not to allow anyone to use internet services without a proper ID proof. He has directed the owners to save the activity server log on the main server for six months. The DC has also directed all the house owners, who have given their houses on rent, to inform the nearby police station about their tenants. Similarly, information has to be provided about any hired domestic help. Protection home for runaway couples
Acting on the directions of Punjab and Haryana High Court, the DC has earmarked two rooms in the Bachat Bhavan as protection home for runaway couples. The home will provide protection to those couples who opt for inter-caste marriage without the consent of their parents. The Deputy Commissioner said that the newly wedded couples belonging to the district can stay at the bhavan, and they will be provided security as per the directions of the court. The DC has directed the LPG agency owners to ensure a regular and uninterrupted supply of cooking gas to consumers. Addressing a meeting of District Food and Civil Supply officials, gas agency owners and other officials here yesterday, he said that the consumers should not be harassed and must be properly treated while delivering gas cylinders. He directed the owners to display the rates of gas cylinder, stock and other information for the convenience of the consumers. The meeting was called after the administration received complaints about overcharging, harassment and non-supply of gas cylinders. District Education Officer and Child Development Project Officer complained in the meeting that gas agency owners were charging commercial rates on cylinders meant for the mid-day meal and the anganwaris. ICICI Prudential told to pay Rs 2 lakh compensation
Chandigarh, November 21 The UT Consumer Redressal Forum has directed the insurance company to pay Rs 2 lakh to the complainant as compensation for causing mental agony, holding it guilty of deficiency in service and indulging in unfair trade practice. The complainant said while selling the policy to him, the insurance company's agents made tall claims of high returns to the tune of 20-25 per cent of the amount invested by him. The complainant had started inquiring about the status of his investments and the agents continued to give him assurances about the status of the policy. The complainant paid an amount of Rs 3,00,000 in all and the policies were issued in his name in 2007. The complainant thereafter continuously remained in touch with the agents, reminding them about the commitment and also registering his grievance. "On not getting a proper response from that end and finally feeling disgusted, he had once again mentioned that no complete information was forthcoming," stated the judgment of the forum. The complainant claimed he did not wish to continue with the different policies he had subscribed for on the advice of the opposite parties but under compelling circumstances preferred to revive the policies, after going through the required formalities of filling up the form, as well as undergoing a medical examination, as advised by the official of the opposite parties, no response was forthcoming from the respondents. |

Youth stabbed to death near Dhanas village
Mohali, November 21 Ranawat, who was working as a cash collector for Vaishno Trading Company (dealing in liquor business), was with his colleague, Parminder Singh Mann, when the incident occurred at around 8.45 pm. Police sources said, Ranawat and Parminder were collecting cash from a liquor vend near Dhanas when two unidentified youths, standing in front of the vend suddenly drove their motorbike past them. Presuming that the duo had taken away their cash, Parminder and Kaushik chased them. At some distance both the youths were caught following which the foursome indulged in a fight. During the fight, one of the youths stabbed Kaushik while Parminder sustained injuries on his thigh and chest. Both the accused managed to flee from the spot on their motorcycle. A case of murder has been registered against the unidentified youths at the Kharar Police Station (Sadar). |

Rs 4 lakh stolen from Hotel Mountview
Chandigarh, November 21 The family members reported the matter to the police after a delay of 24 hours, and it was only today that the case was registered. A case was registered at the Sector-3 police station. Over 15 such incidents of theft have occurred at weddings in the city in the past two months, and the UT police has failed to solve even a single such case. A Mohali resident, Sukhwinder Singh, former employee of the Punjab Food and Supply Department, had booked the hotel for his daughter’s wedding on Monday. The bride’s mother, who was holding the bag containing envelopes, left it unattended on a table while greeting a guest. When she returned, she could not find the bag. Surinder Singh reported to the police that the bag contained shagun envelopes and mobile phones of his wife and daughter. The incident occurred around 9 pm. The police scrutinised the CCTV cameras installed at the hotel and also the video recording of the wedding, but the footage failed to provide any clue. Police also questioned private security guards of the hotel. A police officer said a gang of juvenile thieves, who come dressed in formal dresses, is active in the city. Last month, a similar theft was reported during a wedding at Hotel Park Plaza in Sector 17. Thefts have also been reported at community centres across the city in the last one month. |

Stadia guards brave winter chill sans equipment
Chandigarh, November 21 A total of 52 private security personnel have been deployed at nine different coaching centres, on different shifts, to look after the belongings and surroundings of the arena. During a night visit to these stadiums, the personnel were found performing their duties without equipments. “We have sticks to safeguard the arena. No torches or any other equipment is provided to us to safeguard the arena or ourselves. Moreover, now the nights will get foggy and a stick to work with will remain the most dangerous and tedious job for us,” said a security personnel. “To cover this entire stadium, we have two halogen lights, a stick and nothing else. I am looking after gym, the store rooms and two other rooms. Now, one can easily understand the effort and concentration one needs for this job. Moreover, we have no sheds. Sometimes I catch many people doing illegal activities here and later hand them over to the police. But I always live with a fear, what if they come back and attack me,” said another private security personnel. On other hand, Chaman Lal, supervisor, security, said: “All the security personnel are provided with security equipments to safeguard the arena. Their main job is to protect the equipments and the belonging of the stadium.” But when told, about the pictorial proof, he said: “Few security personnel like to patrol without security equipments” When asked about any gear provided to security personnel to safeguard themselves from chill, he said: “They area provided with sweaters,” whereas the security personnel denied this. “The security personals do not need torches to safeguard as we already have enough lights inside the stadiums.
