Following her stint in the Kingfisher Calendar Hunt 2012, model Sneha Upadhyay has done television and is now ready for Bollywood. We catch up with her…

What else is it if not a stroke of luck? Minus any strenuous auditions, competition from other contestants or references from well-connected people, Sneha Upadhyay was able to make it to the final list of the Kingfisher Calendar Hunt 2012. The producer of the show spotted her on Facebook, contacted her through the social networking site and gave her a slot in the final round. "It was easy only till the entry point; the actual test began later. The tasks were extremely tough. I didn't have any experience in modelling, unlike the other girls, who knew how to strike the perfect poses," says the model, who was in Chandigarh for the opening of a fine jewellery and trousseau store, Tashya. And she got her due for all the hardwork she put in after she won the first runners-up position!

Hailing from Kolkata, she shifted her base to Mumbai three years back and worked as a marketing professional in a private firm. "Life has changed a lot. I am a full-time model now. In fact, post the show I also took part in the Femina Miss India contest and won the Miss Fashionista title." The exposure she got on her first show helped her later on, "By the time Femina Miss India happened, I knew all the attributes that a model should have. I was trained and thus could last till the finals of the contest."

Life, she says, could have been even better. Going back in times when she was contesting for the Kingfisher contest, "The situation changed when Natalia Kaur, who had a raunchy item number in the film Department, came in as a wild card entry and won the contest." Besides the runners-up position, she has gained some good friends in the fashion industry, who she says, will help her go a long way. The list includes names of celebrity fashion photographers, Atul Kasbekar, Vikram Bawa, Daboo Ratnani et al, "They taught me how to survive in this industry. They instilled confidence in me that I can compete with experienced models and still excel."

Sneha has followed the regular course since then - model, television and 'ready for Bollywood'. She made a TV debut with Topper of the year-Suvreen Duggal. The role was cut short due to some personal obligations. Now with the experiences she has earned, she feels she is ready to jump on the Bollywood bandwagon.

"The industry doesn't have an actress who is good at acting and dancing at the same time like Madhuri Dixit or Sridevi used to be. Maybe I can fill that void." Oops! Is that
bordering on the line of over-confidence?

In store

Plush interiors, sparkling jewellery, exclusive trousseau wear, the newly opened Tashya gems and Jewellery store has a lot to offer from designer-wear to accessories. Designer-wear includes the likes of Anshu Modi, Monika Nidhi, Arnab Sen Gupta, Una Kanoi, among others. "It's a one-stop shop for people who want trousseau-wear or formals. The range begins from the affordable Rs 1,000 to Rs 3 lakhs," says Sandeep Goel, owner of the store. The USP of the store, he says, is exclusivity of clothes. "No two designs are the same. We want people to indulge without paying a heavy price for what they buy."

Couple chemistry
Husband-wife Karanvir Bohra and Teejay Sidhu, post a successful stint on television, are ready to debut in the Punjabi movie world with Love You Soniye
Manpriya Singh

One-and-a-half hours is late by even laid-back standards, but when Karanvir Bohra with wife Teejay Sidhu in tow, walk in with profuse apologies and amidst friendly banter while passing the buck, the delay sounds inevitable and the reasons plausible. "Guys, you should never travel by ****** airlines, board a train instead," shoots Karanvir. Chips in Teejay Sidhu, "I had thought I'd wear a parandi and dress up like a pretty Punjaban, but the late arrival watered our plans." As of now, while sitting at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, they are out to let Chandigarh know of their Punjabi plans.

"Our television serials have a significant fan-following in the North; we thought this was the right time to go ahead with our Punjabi film Love You Soniye, the shooting for which rolls in January. I would rather do regional cinema over Bollywood since Punjabi is my first language," says Teejay, having had her brush with popularity with Ekta Kapoor's Kinna Sona Tennu Rab Ne Banaya.

The cast

Other than the story-line, they let the star-cast do the talking. There is Hard Kaur, Raghu Ram, music by Juggy-D and Rishi Rich, while his wife plays a part too. The director, Sahil Kohli, hails from the city, "which is why we thought Chandigarh would be a great place to announce the start from." He adds, "Almost everyone we asked gave a nod to the project." The late Comedy King Jaspal Bhatti had a triple role to play in the movie. "This has been the most unfortunate part. His character tries to get us together in the film." Johnny Lever steps in place and tries to fill the void.

Then there's a reference to 'baddest' guy of non-fiction, Raghu Ram. "He is more than excited and agreed instantly. We have all fresh faces in the film, but all known faces."

The couple

It's been six years of togetherness, both professionally and personally. "We still feel like we are dating each other." Laughs Teejay, "I had to part with half my wardrobe space and that's the only compromise I have had to make." While Karanvir Bohra calls the shots in acting, his better half does the same in language and diction. "You see when a husband and wife duo are cast in the movie, you have to produce it yourself," laughs Karanvir, while pegging the budget at somewhere between Rs 1.5 to 2 crores. "It's a romantic comedy, a family entertainer and a complete fun film; even the humour is in the form of everyday conversations," he adds.

Is it not an endeavour to jump onto the bandwagon and cash-in on the sudden upswing? "Generally, a boom period comes once in a while and everybody starts making films on similar themes, but we want to maintain our class." Perhaps, they refer to the recent string of successful films! "We've seen all the Punjabi movies, Jatt and Juliet, Carry On Jatta, Dharti; you name it and we've seen it." They seem to have their benchmarks right!

Tradition calling
Go ethnic with your gifts this Divali season…
Jigyasa Kapoor Chimra

Gifts are the order of the day as we approach Divali. Although there is no dearth of choices available in the market, what we suggest are traditional gift items for an ethnic festival of lights.

Rangeela Punjab

Punjab Government Emporium or Phulkari (as we know it) in Sector 17 is a good place for picking up some great ethnic gifts. While you can select phulkari dupattas and juttis for your near and dear ones, for regular gifts there are wooden, brass and metal items. "The latest festive addition is the handmade diya. Other than that, we have the gold-inscribed marble Ganesha, brass bells with Goddess Lakshmi and Ganesha inscribed on it, wooden carved temples and silver polished white metal utensils," says an employee of Phulkari.

Tradition intact

Right from multi-coloured wall hangings to traditional Gujarati thorans at Gujari in Sector 20, Chandigarh, you have an array of ethnic stuff to choose from. "Jharokas, gem-stone paintings, table-lamps, wooden candle-stands, photo-frames, pedestals; white metal surahi and hukka are some of the best selling traditional stuff this festive season," says Rajnish, manager, Gujari. Another shop to try for some ethnic stuff is the Orissa Handicraft and Handloom Emporium in Sector 35. Here you can pick brass gifts, traditional hand-worked cloth lamps, appliqué work paintings, wooden idols and more.

Price range: From Rs 200 to Rs 20,000.

Fab deal

For all those people looking for some chic gifts, all roads lead to Fabindia and Westside Mall in Industrial Area, Chandigarh. Here you have a wide range of traditional gifts to pick from. "From candle-holders to metal-lanterns, lamps, platters, ceramic pottery like vases, platters to picture frames in metal, wood, leather and cloth; we even have organic gift hampers for Divali. This includes organic food hampers and skin products," says an employee of Fabindia. At Westside, you can pick metal and glass lanterns, wooden pedestals, wall-clocks, brocade and silk-lined wooden trays, antique-looking frames and other decorative stuff to suit your gifting platter.

Life as he sees it…
Belgian photographer Douglas Vanherpe likes to capture the beauty of simple things that he finds in his surroundings
Manpriya Singh

Douglas’ work depicting life's metaphors
Douglas’ work depicting life's metaphors

Rows of empty chairs outside a cafe is a passable sight, till someone decides to freeze it into eternity. Nobody would give a second glance to a woman carrying a child at the door step, and then it's turned into a photograph. A captured moment becomes a reason to reflect and ponder. While a few frames depict life's metaphors, others of the 41 photographs by Belgium's globe-trotter photographer Douglas Vanherpe cover a wide spectrum of subjects.

In the photo exhibition, In My Parents' Eyes, there's fashion, street art, everyday life, things out of the ordinary.

"I shot this series in 2008. They are a very small selection of the pictures I had sent to my parents that year," shares the artist. He adds, "I started taking pictures because I wanted to share my life with my parents as I have been living in different foreign countries. I wanted to share what I was experiencing. I wanted to have them closer to me. I wanted to become my parents' eyes."

The endeavour to capture everyday life, turned into an affair of a lifetime. "Beauty lies in the simplest of things. Things we don't notice anymore in our daily lives. We just walk by them only seeing the big picture and forgetting to bother about small details."

Never mind the French captions, most of the photographs speak for themselves. A tree against a neon pink wall and a child dressed in a similar hue, little children struggling to climb up the stairs, a woman smoking in the balcony, a bird about to take off, a dew drop on a leaflet, a maple leaf on the street above the imprint of a man's shoe, the carefree beauty of a woman in a traditional colourful robe, a lonely narrow street, some vintage cars and equally picture perfect road.

There's a play of light and shadow in a lot of the frames, a few reflect life's everyday metaphors and some the high street fashion that France is associated with. "I left my country 17 years ago. Since then I feel at home wherever I go and a stranger everywhere else. I have started to look at things as if I saw them for the first time, focusing more on details and differences between cultures."

Aneesh Bhanot and Sudeep Rawat chronicle the history of Chandigarh temples

 Aneesh Bhanot & Sudeep Rawat
Aneesh Bhanot & Sudeep Rawat

Chronicling Chandigarh and its people is what Aneesh Bhanot loves. Now, he is out with his latest book Temples of the Tri-City Vol I.

Having written already on the leading personalities of Chandigarh and its Gurudwaras, for this book he has collaborated with colleague Sudeep Rawat. Thirty in total, this book brings out their brief history, programmes and charity work done by the temples in and around Chandigarh.

"The process has been incredibly challenging," says Aneesh. The most difficult task was to chronicle the history of the temples, for there are so many versions. This duo scoured through the temple records to establish it. And, this process was spiritually uplifting as well, they assert.

"Our city has lot many temples and such varied ones, right from Pracheen Shiv Mandir to Ayyappa Mandir, Kaalibari and ISKCON," offers Sudeep.

The book has simplified text and is high on pictorial quality featuring the edifice, idols as well as worshippers. The book was released in Sanatan Dharma Mandir-23, recently. The temple is known to be the first temple built when Chandigarh came up as a city.

In order to reach out to the maximum, this book is available in three price versions - hardbound coffee table format for RS 950, paperback for Rs 650 and base version for Rs 150. Keeping Diwali in mind, it comes with a gift packet with candles and posters.

While Sudeep is already working on the second volume of the book, Aneesh is working on another 40 projects in association with other writers. And, not only on Chandigarh. "I am doing some books on successful Indians abroad and many more interesting ideas," says Aneesh who finds the process of writing pretty self satisfying!

TRENDSETTER
The right choice

Sanna Dhiman
Chic choice: Sanna Dhiman

Every person has a sense of style in his/her own right. Yet there are only a few who'd attract the second glances, who have the power to make the camera go zoom on them. It could be tousled hair, it could be torn jeans. Our this week's face in the crowd is Sanna Dhiman, post-graduate student in marketing.

Your sense of style is…

Style is something that defines you, hence I believe "choose right to feel right". As it's also dynamic, I like to keep myself updated with the change in fashion trends.

Latest addition in the wardrobe

My pink heels, a Zara dress and a Chambor orange lipstick.

Brand freak or street smart?

Both. I believe you have to be smart and select wisely--be it top brands or the street as the choice out there is endless!

Choose one-- sporty, glamorous or chic?

Chic, as it's more about being smartly stylish.

Your style icon?

Gauri Khan as she has a classy dressing sense, a classy lifestyle and also a classy man.

Who's the worst dressed celebrity around?

Vidya Balan (mostly in westerns). Just can't relate to her. Rani Mukerji comes in a close second!

One fashion trend you don't understand…

Using leggings as pants. Leggings are comfortable but using them as pants with short tops is a big no.

Your take on accessories?

One should not to go overboard. Sometimes a simple neckpiece can change the whole look. I think hair bands and bracelets add to the charm.

One thing that boosts your confidence

My favourite dress, my favourite heels, my hair well done and compliments from my favourites.

Which designer would you love to be dressed up by?

Given a chance I'd like to try them all, but to narrow it down--Manish Malhotra as he brings out the best in a woman.

STAR TRACK
Naseeruddin Shah unplugged

Naseeruddin Shah calls a spade, a spade. Read on for his funny and blunt opinions on everything.

Actors and movies

I am fond of Boman Irani, Arshad Warsi, Ranbir Kapoor, Irrfan, and Manoj Bajpai. I think they are very talented. I can barely tell one actress apart from the other. Sorry!

I also do not understand the concept of remakes! Some movies that should not have been made in the first place are being remade. For instance, Agneepath was a piece of crap that could have been skipped altogether.

Learning new things

I am over 60 now so I have to learn new things to save myself from Alzhiemer'sNaseeruddin Shah Disease. So I am learning to read and write Urdu and also carpentry. I have taken a break from acting in movies. If it weren't for fame and money, no one would do it as it is a soul-destructing job and makes one miserable. I prefer and enjoy theatre much more.

Lessons in life

I am not cut out to make movies. I made one movie and failed. I could not get my message across. I learnt my lesson. I also don't like giving interviews and doing film promotions where we have to talk about ourselves. I like movies and acting but not talking about how I feel regarding various subjects.

Fearless Deepika

Actress Deepika Padukone is all set to dabble in out-and-out action for Abbas-Mustan's thriller Race 2.

To make her character more convincing, this time around the 26-year-old actress has decided to shoot the hi-octane stunts without a double, which includes a thrilling car chase sequence.

"Abbasji-Mustanji (directors) have mastered this genre. I was a bit nervous during the first couple of days since this is the first time I have attempted an action thriller, but they gave me a lot of confidence and made me feel comfortable," said Deepika, who looks sizzling on the poster of the film, in a white gown with a thigh-high slit and scarlet lips. — PTI

Redefining SRK

Shah Rukh Khan returns as the ultimate lover boy (at 47) in Yash Chopra's Jab Tak Hai Jaan. He says he has done five romantic films out of 75 films in his career. He talks about romance, his brand, and more.

Branded boy

I feel that more than the brand, I just try to enjoy my acting. I have been enjoying it since 20 years. I don't think I will stop soon. Till the time I get happiness, I will do it. Very few people get the chance of doing what they want to do...and very few get the chance of doing new things every day.

Reel perception

You only know who I am from the impression you make of me from my films. You never get to know how I really am because you don't know me, neither do you spend time with me. And my larger than life image is so big that if I romance well, you feel that I am a romantic. My image is so big already that whatever you think of me is based on your perception of me from my films.

True romance

You should sit with who you love...you don't need anything else...beach, candle, a car or anything. When you love someone, you don't need anything else. The fact that you do need other things means that you don't love that person.

Interpretation of love

Yashji wanted to make love stories. He said that we have had enough of these fighting films. I believed in him...... (with this film) he said he wanted to make aShah Rukh Khan simple yet complicated film on human relations. It is a very modern interpretation (of love). (But) I think love remains the same.

Acting bug

People call me a romantic hero but acting is my forte. I like singing, dancing, fighting, romancing, going to new places. I try to make my roles different and exciting by doing a variety of movies. I like adding new elements to my roles and take them up as challenges.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is November 9...

You'll carefully analyse your ways and try to correct previous errors. This will remedy a stagnant situation, which is not in line with your expectations. Your beloved will feel ignored and want you by his or her side. Be as understanding as you can at this delicate time.

Resolution on your birthday - having meaningless relationships is useless. Number Nine is a tolerant, somewhat impractical, and sympathetic vibration. Ruled by Mars, you are jack of all trades - humanitarian, sympathetic, helpful, emotional, tolerant, active and determined. If expressed negatively: financially careless, moody, bullying, overly emotional, sullen and restless. As lovers, you will be involved and helpful. You've had some fantastic ideas lately and now the time for action has arrived. In 2013, think about the benefits of lending a hand and building relationships.

Stars recommend acting with patience and resolve, focusing on precise objectives. Beware of a jealous Virgo colleague. Self-employed people will have new ideas. Some ties are meant to be broken, regardless of how tight they may have once been. There are those who would try to trick you into believing the disaster was your fault. Your charm, willingness to cooperate and sense of humour make a big difference. Solving personal issues with or for members is very likely, but don't 'push or press' for results; patience is your best ally, especially after the problem has revealed itself.

Investments made are likely to bring gradual profits. Creative interests, recreational activities and children's affairs will also engage you attention. Your health might experience ups and downs; take care of your dietary pattern. Sometimes lethargy takes control of you. Some old relative's death may trigger sadness. Toning down your usual enthusiasm and tempering your strong will can help build successful relationships.
