A rocking affair
When Rakhi Sawant and Miss Pooja get together on the sets of soon-to-be-released Punjabi movie Pooja Kiven Aa, the atmosphere has to be electrifying. We dig in more…
Manpriya Singh

The noise and the commotion at TAO, Sector 26, Chandigarh, can put an industrial fan to shame; no, it’s not a Saturday night, but the set of Punjabi film Pooja Kiven Aa that is in progress! Clear hierarchies and random helping hands run through the site. All this is coupled with an army of assistants; there’s a larger-than-life statue of Buddha in one corner and it’s all falling into place till someone remarks, “It’s a set up for an item song starring Rakhi Sawant.”

Respect her or ridicule her, the self-made woman has mastered the art of being talked about and when it’s Rakhi Sawant, she’s worth the wait.

Breaking barriers

We’ve heard of a Punjabi track fitting in a Bollywood film, but an item song in a Punjabi film is a first. “Punjabi cinema is as it is breaking so many barriers and if an item song fits in the script, why not? It’s not a concept restricted to national cinema,” Nidhi Sharma, director, justifies. She adds, “It’s a story of three boys and an out-and-out comedy. I suggest that the audience keep their brains behind at home when they come to watch this film. The script cashes-in on the confusion throughout.” There’s a promise of a laughter riot and a guest appearance by a “very big Bollywood name.”

Item list

The lady enters wearing a black gown, which more likely resembles Bedouin robe, falters with the Punjabi greetings and asks to be excused for ten minutes before revealing bright pink and lime green look of the song. Hasn’t she had enough of item numbers? “As an artist I want to do everything. Moreover, this is not an era of Hindi film industry where once you do a certain role you’ll get typecast and not given other kinds of experimental roles.”

Speaking of which, experimental roles that is, the typical characters of Punjab are welcome with open arms. “I’d love to play a Punjabi village mutiyar wearing Patiala salwars and parandi and walk around in the sarson ke khet. I’d really love to do that.” Is there anything left? After the state, perhaps the Capital! “This time, I’m staying in Chandigarh for three days. I’ve been here before though.” But this once, there’s a festive timing! “No, I’m not fasting because there has to someone to keep the fast for.”

She laughs, “But yes, I can keep Karva Chauth for Salman Khan since I adore him.” The opinion and attention shifts to B-town, “I like Kareena Kapoor and congratulate her on her wedding. We met recently and posed together for the media too.” We bring it back to regional cinema. Has she seen any Punjabi movies or know any artistes? “I know Daler Mehendi, there’s Neeru Bajwa and we meet cordially; then there’s Sukhwinder Singh, Hans Raj Hans and of course Mika.” She winks, clearly signifying it’s a faint memory now!

Act wise

The songs, the movie and even the name of the character is dedicated to her. Everything else is self-explanatory and perhaps that’s why she refuses to elaborate. “The movie releases in February, so I fear I might end up revealing too much, but I play a very self-centered girl.” The comedy as a genre, she says, “It’s not too difficult to attempt, if you have the right script and guidance.” A combination that she hopefully gets right this time after the debut Punjaban and Channa Sachi Muchi. She nods, “When those movies released, it was not the peak time of Punjabi cinema. At times production and at times promotion, if anything is lacking, it’s difficult for a movie to do well.” Which is why, singing remains her first love. “It’s due to singing that I have everything, including the movie offers and all the adulation of fans.” Post the movie Cocktail, four songs in Masti II await as also a song with Mika!

Carrying forward a legacy…
Manpriya Singh

The mishap is unsaid but it still pervades the silence of the ‘pirated’ audio release of the movie Power Cut. The ‘handpicked pirates’ handed over the fake CDs to those present at the function, everything true-blue Jaspal Bhatti style.

A week after the tragedy, Savita Bhatti and Jasraj Bhatti are the perfect picture of strength and ready to take forward the thought process left behind by the comedy king. “Jaspal Bhatti was totally against piracy. If he stood up for common man’s right, he also stood up for artists rights.” She adds, “The title Power Cut literally symbolized a life-long disconnect in our lives.”

The event, that was originally supposed to happen at Jalandhar, finally took place in the city. Puts in Jasraj, “He discussed this idea first and foremost with me. Piracy is such a profitable industry that before anybody else does it, we might as well do it and make some money.” He adds, “For the old fashioned music lovers, who still believe in originality, the original CDs will be available from Monday onwards.”

Among the songs by Mika, Sunidhi Chauhan, Lehmber Hussainpuri and Master Saleem, those by Saleem border on the sad and touching genre. He shares, “When Jaspal Bhatti sir made me listen to the songs, I couldn’t stop laughing, thinking how will sad songs fit into a comedy film but I’m so glad I got an opportunity to work with him. Ever since, I was a nobody I’ve wanted to work with him.” Meanwhile, there are songs playing in the background, some are powerful and touching while the title song, Power Cut, is foot-tapping with lyrics dotted with trademark Jaspal Bhatti sarcasm. She requests, “Please listen to the songs and have a cup of tea before leaving. I have to answer Jaspal Bhatti, he’d be really angry with me, otherwise.” While son Jasraj, assures of ‘actually trying best to take forward his legacy and going forward with all the ideas that his father had’.

Life can be summed up in three words, “it goes on.”

RAP & roll
Chandigarh-based rap group Raptilez 101, which has reached the semi-final stage of television reality show India’s Got Talent, draws inspiration from life itself
Jasmine Singh

Rehan De…the two words instantly caught the fancy of one of the judges, Karan Johar, on the television reality show India’s Got Talent. As for the other two judges, Kirron Kher and Malaika Arora Khan were concerned, they smiled, foot-tapped and gave a ‘yes’. It was the moment of a lifetime for Chandigarh-based rap group Raptilez 101, which has now reached the semi-final stage of the show.

Three boys Gaganpreet Singh (Nugget), Udaibir Singh (Mista-Rider) and Daanvir Singh Mavi (Tu-Bonez) are now rhyming and rapping their story. “It started almost three years back when Gaganpreet made us listen to the music he had made. Thereafter, we started penning down our own lyrics and rapping,” says Mavi, who can’t believe that people are now talking about this rap group.

Roses, guns, drugs, street fights; most rap stories revolve around these, but this trio takes inspiration from just one thing - life. “Life is beautiful; we are not inspired by an individual rapper or stories, we make tracks that can be sung, are party-type, foot-tapping and true.” Mavi sounds tired! The group has shot for the semi-final round and is now waiting for it to be relayed on television.

With no album to their name, the rap group Raptilzes has released 14 singles on social networking sites and Youtube.

“Now that we have got a platform through India’s Got Talent; it makes sense to work on an album now,” adds Mavi, who along with the two members dresses absolutely normally! No earrings, no falling jeans! “We are rappers; we don’t have to dress up to be one.” What makes them different from the other group is that they believe in being true to their lyrics.

“We blend rap with hip-hop or with classic music. In fact, music plays an important role in rapping, then come lyrics and finally blending them well,” Mavi winds up the conversation. It’s time to head for a jamming session, a time when the three rappers whip-up stories!

The grand stage

The Chandigarh Theatre Festival is an annual feature of the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi to promote theatre as well as artistes. The 7th edition of the festival will be held from November 11th to 12th and then November 14th to 18th at the Tagore Theatre, Sector-18, Chandigarh. The festival aims to promote both regional and Hindi language theatre. As many as seven theatre groups from the region will be participating in the event, which will be dedicated to the memory of Jaspal Bhatti, Dinesh Thakur and AK Hangal. Following is the itinerary.

November 11: Yeh Ishq Nahi Aasan.

Directed and adapted by KNS Sekhon.

Yeh Ishq Nahi Aasan is a story that revolves around three people in different states of mind and trapped in different shades of love. The play depicts true horrors of how we as human beings can act towards one another. Yeh Ishq Nahi Aasan is not about love; it’s about everything in between. It’s a mix of absurdist humour and a slapstick comedy.

November 12: Nithalle Ki Diary.

Directed by Sudesh Sharma.

Nithalle ki Diary is a play adapted from a series of short stories written by the noted satirist and humourist of modern Hindi literature Harishankar Parsai. The plot is a portrayal of various chapters from his diary. Each chapter is sarcasm on the myriad aspects of our inefficient public administration system. The drama highlights the deteriorating ethics, corruption and the superstition prevalent in the present society. The notable feature of the script is that without preaching, the writer aptly conveys the root cause and the measures required to improve upon our ways.

November 14: Shaweta Jivit Hai.

Directed by Jagdish Chandra Tiwari.

The play is based on mafia gang leaders who connive with bureaucrats to run a business of alcohol and drugs, which ruins the life of a common man. Here the drug mafia bargains with the police system to work in their definite area. In the whole process, a man exposes the nexus.

November 15: Baldey Tibbey.

Directed by Umesh Kant.

The Punjabi play Baldey Tibbey has been adapted from one of the most enduring plays of the American playwright Eugene O Neill titled Desire under the elms by late Balwant Gargi. The story has been provided a typical Punjabi dimension and showcases the tragedy involving a jatt farmer’s lust for zar, zoru and zameen.

November 16: Bobby Breaker.

Directed by Geeta Aggarwal Sharma.

This is the story about the struggle of a young boy Vishwas Joshi whose nickname is Bobby. He is a hardworking, sincere and talented guy working in bank, but the only thing that makes him feel inferior is that he stammers and hence people call him Bobby-Breaker. However, Bobby is lucky to have a friend (narrator of the play) who cares for him.

November 17: Hum to Aise hi Hain

Directed by Manish Joshi Bismil

This is a heart-rending story of an artist’s relationship with his art. Manish Joshi Bismil’s play is about an artist’s ambitions, social stigmas, struggles and the ultimate triumph of the relationship that he shares with his craft.

November 18: Karmawali

Directed by Sunita Dhir and Gursharn

The play Karmawali, written by KL Zakir, depicts the tragedy of the Partition of India. It reflects the trauma of a woman who faces the horrible moment at that time.

Web of fashion
The world of fashion is big. And making it bigger is the Internet, where online stores are becoming a huge hit with the buyers...
Ashima Batish

If what is seen more, sells more, why should designers limit themselves to two seasons and four major fashion weeks a year? The regional fashion ‘so-called’ weeks help to some extent, but it’s the virtual presence that is introducing them and their designs to a larger number of fashion followers. The videos of a fashion week are uploaded on Youtube, the photographs are posted on Facebook; an event is described at length in 40 characters on Twitter and add to that the online stores of fashion designers or tie-ups with fashion portals. If Ritu Kumar has an online store of her own, Sabyasachi has a tie-up with Pernia’s Pop-up shop. Virtual is as powerful as the real world of fashion!

A picture of every creation that Mandira Wirk has presented on the ramp from 2007 onwards can be found on her website, www.mandirawirk.com. Even whatever comprises her collection for the ongoing Blenders Pride Fashion Tour has been added. “Mere showcasing creations on the ramp and getting critical applause is not enough.

What’s more important is getting buyers, but at a fashion show you get a limited audience. A strong presence in the virtual world connects you with more people.” The client base also becomes more eclectic. From corporate sector, businessman, bureaucrats to even those in the glamour world approach because they are able to view all collections from different seasons.

Physical boundaries too stand diluted. It gets easier for fashion designers to lure customers from across the world. In that case, it doesn’t matter if a designer doesn’t showcase his stuff at the fashion weeks. Consider Reema Godhwani for that matter, whose brand, Zooni, has never climbed the ramp but marks its attendance around the world. “Besides the stores that we have, we sell through our website, www.zooni.net,” says Reema. The online store was launched a year-and-a-half back and Reema is getting almost the same number of customers online as she gets in her stores.

“When time is a luxury, it’s not easy for people to travel for a few hours and then shop. Online shopping might deprive the customer of actual experience, but one gets to see a variety of products; more than one can actually go through.” The best part about online shopping is that you get bulk orders. Otherwise, how many creations can one buy in a store at one go? No wonder then, a day’s count easily touches 14 outfits.

Fashion and You introduced the concept of online shopping by selling designer creations. The concept then gained popularity with a dozen portals following suit. To name some, Ebagsfull, Jabong, Yebhi, … but they aren’t necessarily selling designer products. Niket Mishra of the label Niket and Jainee, is selling through four different portals, each dedicated to different segments of fashion.

“We are selling bridal-wear on one and casual on another, which guarantees a better display and attention for our products,” says Niket. To begin with, he was a bit apprehensive of exploring the option, “It makes copying a design easier as anybody can access it on the Internet.” Niket’s mindset changed when he realised that his NRI clientele is growing, courtesy the online portals he has collaborated with. Various internationals brands that created a huge market in India became a case study for him. “Then all you need is high resolution pictures and some details about the fabric, work and style of the outfit mentioned alongside. It cuts down expenses on the actual space.” Who knows the ‘virtual’ gets the better of ‘real’ in the coming times!

ashima@tribunemail.com

On the line

From Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, Anamika Khanna, Sabyasachi to Shantanu and Nikhil, there is a huge list of designers who are retailing through fashion portals. If the trend gains further strength, in the times to come, we might see designers design an exclusive collection for the portals!

When time is a luxury, it’s not easy for people to travel for a few hours and then shop. Online shopping might deprive the customer of actual experience, but one gets to see a variety of products.

Reema Godhwani

Mere showcasing creations on the ramp is not enough. What’s more important is getting buyers. A strong presence in the virtual world connects you with more people.

Sing along
Mona

Fate plays different games. Maninder Mahi, who left Punjab two decades back to pursue a career in singing, is back on his home turf. Opportunity in the region, with a boom in Punjabi films, has made this Punjabi singer open up an office in Zirakpur. Singing, which had rather been a passion for this national-level boxing champ, turned his profession when he couldn't see any future in the game.

"Music is in my blood," says Mahi, who has trained the Gurus of Patiala and Gwalior Gharana. Playback singing in Bollywood happened rather by chance for this singer, whose first album Hoya Akh Da Ishara was released by HMV in 2001.

"I was with other Punjabi singer friends when music director Sachin Gupta asked me to move to Mumbai," he says. The learning continues as do stage shows that take him across the world.

"In the last 20 years, I have come for shows here but hardly been able to meet my family. I am enjoying that phase now," he signs off.

first-day-first show
Action-packed week

Cast: Daniel Craig, Xavier Bardem, Judy Dench, Ralph Fiennes & Naomi Harris

Skyfall is the twenty-third spy film in the James Bond series. It features Daniel Craig's third performance as James Bond, and Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva, the film's villain. The film is directed by Sam Mendes.

In the film Bond investigates an attack on MI6; it transpires that it is part of an attack on M by former MI6 operative, Raoul Silva. The film sees the return of two recurring characters after an absence of two films--Q, played by Ben Whishaw, and Miss Moneypenny, played by Naomie Harris.

Craig dazzles

Daniel Craig looks as handsome as ever. This was the much-awaited movie, and it has the right amount of action. The story about the agents keeps one hooked to the screen till the end.

Harman Deol, student

Total entertainment

Almost all James Bond movies are good. Skyfall is a heavy dose entertainment and action. Javier Bardem as the villain has done a good job, though he hardly looks like a villain. There are no boring moments in the film.

Sunpreet Singh, fashion designing student

Predictable story

More than Daniel Craig, I liked Javier Bardem. He is somehow more convincing in his role. The story is a little bit predictable, but those who have been following Bond movies, this comes naturally.

Dheeraj Sika, employee

Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana

Cast: Kunal Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Munish Makhija

Omi Khurana (Kunal Kapoor) has just returned to his hometown in Punjab from London. Well, to be more precise, he escaped from London to save himself from a dangerous UK gangster (Munish Makhija) to whom he owes a lot of money!

Aye for Kunal

It is a total fun film. I am seeing Kunal Kapoor in a comic role for the first time, and he has done a decent job. The actress Huma Qureshi doesn't look appealing in her de- glamorous look.

Sneha Chawla, homemaker

Filled with flavour

Those who like food will definitely enjoy this movie with so much of Punjabi flavour. The dialogues are funny and hilarious. The songs have a Punjabi touch too but they are not very interesting.

Harpreet Brar, businessman

Fun film

I like the actor who plays Kunal Kapoor's uncle Titu. He is the funniest character in the entire film. The story becomes little boring but overall it is a fun film.

Hardeep Singh Aujla, businessman

1920: Evil Returns

Cast: Aftab Shivdasani, Tia Bajpai, Vidya Malvade

1920: Evil Returns is a supernatural thriller which revolves around Jaidev Verma (Aftab Shivdasani), a famous poet who lives the life of a loner as he is unable to meet the love of his life. He stays with his sister Karuna (Vidya Malvade), who is his support system until he meets Smruti (Tia Bajpai), whom he finds near the lake under mysterious circumstances of being possessed.

Out of place

It is scarier than Bhoot. Aftab Shivdasani looks out of place in the whole film. I don't think he was the right choice for an actor.

Neeraj Chandel, graphic designing student

More to music

The only thing I liked about this so called horror film is music and beautiful exotic locations. I did not get scared for a minute.

Sandeep Bir Singh, model

Horror moments

I must say, I am seeing horror after a long time. 1920, Evil Returns has many spooky moments. The actress Tia Bajpai has done a scary good job.

Suresh Wadhwa, student

TRENDSETTER
Cute is hot!

Trends come and go, fashion changes but being stylish is a constant factor. A stylish person draws a second glance and isn’t that what we all are looking for? The power to attract lies in the ability to carry oneself suitably. Let’s see what young B.Com student Preetika Goyal has to say—

Your sense of style?

For me, style means to be in sync with what is latest and not outdated while dressing appropriately according to the occasion. I would rather go in for the ‘cute’ look rather than the ‘hot’.

One latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories…

My purple jacket from Levis.

Brand crazy or street pick-up?

Brands preferably, but some smart pick-ups from the street are good too.

Your style icon would be…

Sarah Parker and if I can add I like my mom’s way of dressing too.

Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity?

Each to his own. But I think Rakhi Sawant would fit the bill!

Which look would your prefer – sporty, chic or glamorous?

Glamorous it would be.

One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension…

Hot colours in pants don’t gel with me!

Your take on accessories?

Bangles and hair accessories are favourite accessories?

Given a choice which designer you would like to be dressed by?

Surely Manish Malhotra!

What gives you a high on the confidence level?

First of all I have to like myself and then of course compliments always give a high!

Star track

Following in superstar sister’s footsteps

Katrina Kaif's little sister Isabella Kaif is going to make her presence felt in the film industry. Let’s see how she fares as compared to her superstar sister…

Indian versus foreigner

Katrina Kaif is gorgeous. Of all her siblings, she is the only who looks Indian. Her features are sharp too. Isabella looks older than Kat and her features are not Indian. She looks like a foreigner.

Mane magic

Both the gorgeous girls have lovely, long, and thick hair! Runs in the family, we believe! Lucky they are!

Debut flicks

Katrina Kaif did not have it easy. Her debut Boom was a debacle and she looked like a sex bomb in it. Had Salman Khan not intervened, she would have been just another foreign import who did sleazy acts! Salman Khan has had huge role in making her the polished and proper girl she is today. Isabella Kaif has had it way easier and her debut seems respectable and fit for a firang like her.

Youtube videos

Katrina Kaif's scenes from Boom are a rage on Youtube. Meanwhile, Isabella Kaif apparently did a sex video which went viral on the website and kind of made her notorious.

Training ground

Katrina Kaif had no formal training in acting. She is a star who works hard but not yet an effortless actress. It depends on the movie and the role. Isabella Kaif has undergone extensive training at the prestigious New York Film Academy.

Body basics

Both the girls are tall and have shapely figures! Yes, God has been generous with the Turquotte-Kaif family in the beauty department!

Recreating Dhak Dhak moments

Bollywood newbie and fashionista Evelyn Sharma is gearing up for her new movie Nautanki Saala, where the suave Rohan Sippy is attempting to recreate the Dhak Dhak magic.

The song was filmed on none other than ex-superstar Madhuri Dixit during the nineties and formed a part of the movie Beta.

The song featuring the entire cast of the film will have the half-German half-Indian Evelyn dressed in an ultra-glam sari.

She will be seen gyrating her hips with Ayushmann Khurrana and Kunaal Roy Kapur to the beats of composer Mickey in the film, which also has a cameo by none other than Abhishek Bachchan.

The newbie admires Madhuri Dixit but she is keen on infusing the song with her own charisma and charm.

Evelyn Sharma is completely up for the challenge.

Emraan goes to Hollywood

After making his mark as an actor in Bollywood, actor Emraan Hashmi is all set to star in a Hollywood film.

The film is going to be directed by Oscar-winning director Danis Tanovic of No Man’s Land fame.

Confirming the news, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt tweeted: “Breaking News: Emraan Hashmi to play the lead in a Hollywood film. Academy award winning director Danis Tanovic who made No Man's Land is directing this film.”

The film is going to be joint venture by various production houses, including India’s Anurag Kashyap Films Pvt Ltd.

Gaga impresses Kinney

It was not the wigs and meat dresses that attracted actor Taylor Kinney to his girlfriend Lady Gaga — it was because she reminds him of his mother.

Brought up in Pennsylvania along with three brothers by his mother, dental hygienist Pam, the 31-year-old Vampire Diaries star admires a strong woman who works hard to achieve what she wants.

"I look up to a strong woman, maybe that is why I fell for Gaga. She works incredibly hard and is very strong and inspirational like my mom, with a great work ethic," Kinney said. — PTI

Shekhar denies rumours

According to the latest buzz, Danny Boyle who directed Slumdog Millionaire will be producing renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur’s ambitious project Paani.

But Shekhar turned to Twitter and vehemently denied the reports. “All these rumours Danny Boyle producing Paani !! Wish someone would check with me first?” he wrote. It's confirmed now that A R Rahman will be composing the music for the film whereas no official announcement has been made about the cast. It is said that actor Hrithik Roshan will be playing the lead.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is November 3...

Long ailments should not be ignored as they might cause some problems. Investment should be avoided today. If communications and discussions don’t go well, you could lose your cool and say things, which you would regret later. Think before you speak.

Don’t get upset when you confront a tricky situation. As food owes its flavour to salt-some unhappiness is essential only then you realize the value of happiness. Watch your tendency to live for the day and to spend too much on entertainment. You will have difficulty in getting your point across to people who matter the most in your life. This is a good year for romance.

Scorpio is ruled by Mars and number 3 by Jupiter. Mars was the God of War in ancient Roman mythology and is the first ruler of Scorpio. In India, Mars is associated with Lord Hanuman ji. So, when coupled with other planets it makes for people who are motivated, penetrating and aware. Scorpions don’t miss much, since they are highly attuned to the vibrations of others. They are intuitive, probing and focused on knowing who’s who and what’s what. Scorpios can lose their temper when someone gets in their way, so it’s best to give them plenty of room. Look out for overlapping assignments and general duplication of effort. A little attention to how the work has been divided, now gives you more bandwidth for bigger things. Don’t forget to look at past performance now—it’ll impact your current thinking as well as projections and plans. Make the most of 2013, create contacts, which will help you in the near future. Things will go smoothly for those born after 1980. You’ll meet important people who’ll propose interesting business deals. There will be too many loose ends for you to tie up without a helping hand or two. If you try to untangle the knots by yourself, you will create an entanglement which will be a difficult one. A mistake is possible when it comes to personal family finance or banking; double check everything. Financial condition won’t be satisfactory. There will be a big opportunity in your professional life. You will observe necessary precautions in this regard. Express yourself more freely and others will find you quite interesting.

Mood: Vulnerable at times.

Sonali Kulkarni (November 3, 1974, Pune) made her appearance on the tinsel screen in a Kannada movie titled ‘Cheluvi’, and thereafter has appeared in a total of 32 movies, including one in Italian titled Fuoco Si Di Me for which she won an award in Milan International Film Festival.
