What a scare!
It’s Halloween Day and time to fill each moment with the scariest of thoughts and spookiest of outfits
Jasmine Singh

Talking about evil spirits, a partial thanks to how the country and individuals operate, we have loads in the form of corruption, drug abuse and poverty, among others, already around us! Oh, before you get too confused, simply look at the calendar - it’s Halloween Day and we must acknowledge the real evil spirits. A popular Western concept, discotheques in Chandigarh have also decided to go scary!

Party time

Skeletons dangling from the walls, shinning eyes of pumpkin, mannequins with black faces; the scene at some city joints gets really spooky.

The 10 Downing Street celebrates Halloween by giving its interiors a scary spin. DJ Sameer plans to whip some dub-step tracks, asking people to come dressed in their scariest best! As for Vertigo Lounge of Hotel Himani, Sector-35, you could even win a prize for being the best dressed Halloween or even get a discount on your evening bill if you have numbers like 13 or 31 figuring in your final bill.

Says Ankita Gupta, director of the place, “Even though it is not a popular concept, Halloween night is picking up with each year.”

She smiles on the fact that most youngsters wouldn’t know why the day is celebrated, but give them something like ‘a day’ to celebrate and they are all for it. Ditto goes for Kava in Sector-26, where The Halloween Night will see people dressed to the theme.

Costume drama

Bed-sheeted ghosts, masks, black gowns…costumes are a big part of Halloween. Chandigarh-based television and stage artist Gick Grewal provides the best Halloween costumes, “I pick Halloween stuff from UK every year, which includes masks, gloves, hats etc. I also make some costumes myself,” she adds. To Gick, youngsters need a reason to celebrate, and if this is one why not!

The legend goes…

The concept of Halloween has changed, as it has become more fun for kids. It is an occasion to dress up as monsters, ghosts and witches.

Over time, the custom of adults dressing up as demons changed and the children took over. As they went from house-to-house they would knock at each door and cry “trick or treat”. People would then give the children apples or buns and later candy to keep away from the tricks.

As far as the legend goes, Halloween is celebrated on the evening of October 31st, which is the evening before the Christian feast of All Saint’s Day.

The Celts believed that at the end of summer, Samhain, the lord of death becomes powerful and overpowers the sun god. On October 31, Samhain assembles all the evil spirits who had died the previous year and allows them to return home to visit the living. There are different ways in which it is celebrated; for instance in Ireland and Britain, Halloween was also celebrated as Mischief Night when villagers were allowed to play pranks on each other. Aditya Khurana and his friends from Sector-34, Chandigarh, all practicing engineers, have had a chance to celebrate Halloween Night last year in Ireland.

Aditya is quick to add, “It is a big event, where people dress up in horror dresses and move around in the cities. It is a day for non-stop parties and fun. People there believe that ghosts or spirits cannot see their own reflection. Hence, if a demon saw another creature looking suitably horrible, they would run away in terror.”

Shining affair
Jewellery designer Mira Gulati believes if the designs are great, the market is automatically created
Ashima Batish
A creation by Mira Gulati
A creation by Mira Gulati

If not buyers, fashion weeks, ensure overnight popularity. That is how a designer is referred to…a participant in a major fashion week of India. Mira Gulati, a jewellery designer and owner of high-end jewellery brand, Mirari, on the contrary, distanced herself from the India International Jewellery Week after showcasing her work once at the event in 2010. “I realised that the fashion week doesn’t suit the sensibility of my brand. It just welcomes everyone; from a designer to a retailer to just about anybody who wants to use the platform to create his or her reputation,” says the 27-year-old jewellery designer and entrepreneur, Mira, who was in Chandigarh on Tuesday to hold a two-day jewellery exhibition at Taj.

For a brand that’s just five-and-a-half-year old, Mirari has come a long way, not just in terms of the outlets she has in the best of markets in Delhi, DLF Emporio and GK M-block, but also the clientele. For that matter, consider its brand ambassador; no, it’s not a Bollywood actor like with other leading jewellery brands. “We signed up Anoushka Shankar. Each piece that we make is a work of art and Anoushka complemented that. Also, we didn’t want a face that was too commercial,” adds Mira.

Mira’s pieces at the exhibition are the right mix of ethnic and contemporary. The ethnic part is element based as Polki has been excessively used; the contemporary bit is designing. Although she started with the very modern designs, inclusion of traditional stones was made to suit “the typical Indian jewellery lover.” The brand has used peacock as the base of its design many a times. At the exhibition too, she has brought polki and diamond jewellery studded in gold. Other precious stones have also been used, “They help create colourful jewellery and people have started appreciating colours.”

Experimenting with new material is something Mira always prefers. The latest addition to her collection is of leather bands and rings that have been embellished with precious stones. The high-end leather, Galuchat, is taken from Stingray fish; snake-skin is used for the same purpose as well. “The demand for Galuchat rings is increasing, given the fact that they are very price-effective beginning from a reasonable Rs 10,000 going up to Rs 20,000.”

As for the higher range, the jewellery here touches the Rs one-crore mark! “There is a market for jewellery in every price range, provided the designs are great.” And she is sure to find it in Chandigarh and Ludhiana. “I came here because a lot of clients from both the cities visit Delhi to buy my stuff; I thought why not reach them with the same stuff.” Considering the number of walk-ins at her exhibition, you can’t doubt her claim. And then there are Louis Vuittons, Guccis and Coaches along with the sparkling stones that dot the Capitol Hall of the Taj!

A new chapter begins
Sayantani Ghosh
INSIDE OUTSIDE: Sayantani Ghosh

Sayantani Ghosh is happy with her exit from the Bigg Boss house, but at the same time she is also excited to go back to work.

How are you feeling on being evicted?

I am eagerly waiting to meet my family. Now, I will eat lots of non-vegetarian food and get good sleep. I had a great time inside the house. I also made some good friends. I wish I could stay in the house for a longer time.

Why do you think you got eliminated?

This happened because of the change in the nomination process when people had to save the contestants; I guess I got trapped there. I used to work the most in the house and participated in all the tasks. I got along well with everyone.

You were hardly heard in the house. Do you think if you had been quarrelsome, you could have got visibility?

Not really. I never threw tantrums or got involved in any of the fights. So I guess people thought I was indifferent.

Would you want to return to the house again?

Yes, I would. I hope that I get a chance to go to the house again as a wild card entrant.

How would you look back on your experience in the Bigg Boss house?

The Bigg Boss house is indeed a life changing experience. I know that it is just a game and one day everyone has to come out. I'm looking forward to meeting my friends and family. I will definitely follow the rest of the season and wish the housemates all the best, and may the most deserving contestant win.

Dial the backswing with the shoulders
Jesse Grewal

In the last week's article, the relationship of the length of the backswing to the length of the shot was explained. The clock system is used as a reference for both the backswing and the follow through. But the length of the backswing in not the sole determining factor for the length of the shot. The rhythm and tempo of the swing affects the speed of the club at impact. To create a smooth accelerating swing or good tempo the body must be the engine or the driving force of the swing. Rotation of the shoulders and hips provide centrifugal force which in turn make the arms passive and help in their swinging motion.

The first move of the backswing begins from the left shoulder. The turning of the shoulder under the chin moves the arms back. For a 7 o'clock backswing the shoulders would turn little. At the 9 o'clock position the shoulders would have turned approximately two thirds which would be around 60 degrees. If at these positions the shoulder turn has not taken place and the backswing has been done with only the lifting or lateral action of the arms we will not get the desired distance and it would not be repeatable. The downswing is initiated with the turning of the hips to the target. This is controlled by the left side of the body. The left hip and knee return towards their starting positions thereby pulling the shoulders and the arms which in turn bring the club to the ball. The right side has little role. To achieve consistent distances in your shorter approach shots, use the body to move the arms to the desired position during the backswing and let the hips propel the forward swing. The arms are passive and swing the club and do not attempt to hit the ball.

The boom-boom of Diwali crackers has yet to begin but the wedding season sure has started with a bang! Chicken tikka, butter chicken, murgh malaai, chicken steak....I've eaten so much chicken, I'm almost beginning to cluck! You know what I crave? Something green, fresh and crisp, boiled to the perfect point beyond rawness but before the onset of sogginess. A steaming bowl of soup sounds perfect!

Asian noodle soup

1 tbsp cooking oil, 4 spring onions, including green tops, chopped, 4 cloves garlic, minced, 2 tbsp chopped fresh ginger, 2 tbsp soy sauce, ½ tsp chilli flakes, 3½ chicken of vegetable stock, 4 carrots, cut into ¾ inch slices, ½ a cabbage head or bok choy, shredded, 1 cup torn spinach, ¾ cup sliced mushrooms, 60 gm sliced babycorn (optional), Grated zest of 1 lemon, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 200 gm noodles, 1 tsp sesame oil, 1 cup shredded cooked chicken

Method

Heat oil in a large saucepan. Add the chopped white onion portions along with ginger and garlic. Cook till fragrant. Ad the soy sauce, chilli flakes, 3½ cups water and stock. If you want a kick in the soup, scatter some peppercorns in too. Tip in the carrots, lemon zest and salt. Cook for 5 minutes before adding the cabbage or bok choy. Add lemon juice and babycorn if using. Cook for 4-5 minutes. Check seasoning. Boil a large pot of salted water and cook the noodles until just done. Drain. Return the noodles to the pot and toss with the sesame oil. Divide the noodles, spinach and mushrooms into 4 bowls. Add chicken if using, then ladle in the soup.

Anurag is nostalgic

Director Anurag Kashyap got nostalgic as he was shooting at the Hotel Watson, Esplanade Mansion in Mumbai where he shot his unreleased directorial debut Paanch in 1990. “Shooting in the same place all night where I shot the first day of Paanch 12 years ago. Hotel Watson, where the first moving picture was shown,” he tweeted.

Named after its original owner, John Watson, Hotel Watson was the first to show moving pictures as the Lumiere Brothers, the inventors of cinematograph, unveiled six soundless short films at the hotel in 1896. Despite being declared as heritage structure, the building is now in a dilapidated state.

Alia Bhatt
Defining boundaries: Alia Bhatt

Actress of substance

Alia Bhatt says she won't expose for the heck of it or kiss for the heck of it. She was comfortable wearing a bikini in SOTY as she has worn bikinis in real life. She wants to prove herself as an actress and stick around. She says her filmy background gives her a platform but she must prove herself.

Whether she exposes or not, totally depends on the demands of the character and the script. She says that she will strictly go according to the script.

Huma Qureshi Happy & sad

Huma Qureshi won an award for her first film Gangs of Wasseypur at the South Asian Rising Star Film Awards in New York. She could not go to collect it because she is busy promoting Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana and shooting Ek Thi Daayan. She was a bit disappointed but sent a video message to the festival. We are sure she will win many more.

A-trocious rule?

Television channels have refused to air adult-rated movies in any form because of the strict Censor rules. Producers are livid because so many movies are rated A' and a chunk of the revenue comes from television premieres.
