11 injured as five vehicles collide

Fatehgarh Sahib, October 30
As many as 11 persons including, three women, were injured when five vehicles collided with each other near Chorwala village on the Sirhind-Patiala state highway.

According to information, a truck was parked on a road and its driver, Diwan Singh, was changing the tyre with all the four indicators turned on so that the vehicles coming from both the sides could be notice the truck. A Maruti Zen car, driven by Dr BK Goel, coming from Samana side hit the truck from behind injuring his wife Romilla and daughter Ritu.

The truck driver said when he tried to save the injured persons, a driver of the rashly driven bus coming from Patiala side lost the control over the vehicle and hit a tractor-trailer coming from the opposite side, injuring the passengers of the bus. A Qualis car coming from behind also hit the truck resulting in minor injuries to its four passengers.

The police said all the injured were been admitted to the Civil Hospital, Fatehgarh Sahib. — TNS

One killed in road accident

Ambala, October 30
A mini-truck, carrying around one dozen buffaloes, collided with a tanker on the Ambala-Chandigarh road near Ambala City today. As many as 6 buffaloes and the truck driver died on the spot.

The deceased was identified as Sabu, a resident of Bagpat, Uttar Pradesh.

According to information the mini-truck was coming from Bagpat and was on way to Dera Bassi and near Sadopur village, close to Haryana-Punjab border, where it collided with a tanker. — OC

Punjab villages to get potable water, says Valtoha

Fatehgarh Sahib, October 30
To curb the menace of Cancer, the state government has decided to supply 70 litres of clean drinking water per person per day in 600 villages of the state for the present financial year for the residents particularly in Malwa region may get pure drinking water. Besides, the government has also chalked out a comprehensive plan for the over all development in the urban as well as in the rural area simultaneously and Rs 10,000 crore have been earmarked for this purpose.

The development works will be completed in the coming four years and approximately Rs 100 crore will be spent on each constituency irrespective of political representation, said Chief Parliamentary Sectary rural water supply and Sanitation Virsa Singh Valtoha, while addressing the gathering after inaugurating development works in the district at village Ferozepur, Jandali and Chano today.

He said that Rs 8,750 crores have already been approved for 142 cities of the state to provide 100 per cent potable water, sewerage system and other facilities. He added that the department of water supply and sanitation has completed water supply work in 3,280 uncovered and 3455 partial covered area of the state. Besides, the government will spend Rs 1.34 thousand crores to provide potable water in 2481 villages in the coming two years. He said that the villagers would be provided clean drinking water by December 2013. — OC

Dadu Majra murder case
Charges framed against nine

Chandigarh, October 30
The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Preeti Sahni today framed charges of murder against nine persons who had killed a Dadu Majra resident in May.

The Court framed charges under Sections 302, 506, 147, 148 and 149 of the IPC against Arjun, Gurmit, Sonu, Taranjit, Sanjay, Monty, Gautam, Krishan and Sanjeev, all colony residents.

Three other accused in the case are juveniles and their case is being heard in a juvenile court.

On May 15, a 22-year-old youth, Alok Nath, was stabbed to death at Dadu Majra in a well-planned attack by 12 persons, including the nine accused and three juveniles.

As per the prosecution case, the accused, Arjun and his friends, attacked Alok outside a house at Dadu Majra.

Arjun allegedly took out a knife and stabbed Alok to death. He allegedly stabbed Alok at least seven times.

Alok, in an attempt to save himself, barged into a house. But Arjun and his friends had then dragged him out of the house before thrashing him with rods and baseball bats.

The police said prior enmity was the reason behind the murder.

The police has placed the offence in the category of pre-meditated crime.

Attempt-to-murder case registered

Mohali: Local police registered an attempt to murder case against unidentified persons, who today pelted stones at the house of Gurjit Singh and smashed all windowpanes of the house, located in Sohana village here.

The attack was an outcome of a tiff between the complainant Gurjit Singh and two youngsters. The tiff had taken place during a wedding on October 19 at Kambali village. Gurjit Singh alleged that he had lodged a complaint at Sohana police station in this regard, but the police did not take any action.

“Today about 40 persons, most of whom are from Sohana village, came to my house and started pelting stones at my house. At that time my mother, sister-in-law and her four-year-old son was present in the house. They had a narrow escape,” said Gurjit Singh.

DSP HS Riar reached the spot immediately and directed the officials to register a case.

10-year-old raped in jungle

In a shocking incident, a 10-year-old girl was raped by a youth in a jungle near Colony Number 4 yesterday evening. The victim, who had gone to the bushes to attend to nature’s call, was abducted by the youth. He dragged her into the dense forest and raped her.

The minor girl, who was found in a semi-nude condition and profusely bleeding, was rushed to Government Multi-Speciality Hospital where medical examination confirmed that she was raped. The police has registered a rape case under Section 376 of the IPC at the Industrial Area police station.

In her statements to the police, the minor girl stated that she had gone to the jungle where the youth forcibly took her to the interior of the jungle. He then removed her clothes and raped her. The girl initially felt unconscious and later managed to reach home at 11 pm. Her mother rushed her to the hospital and called the police as well.

The police recovered the girl’s salwar and undergarments from the jungle and have videographed the area. “The girl has stated that the accused is a colony resident and she can identify him, he will be arrested soon,” said a police officer investigating the case.

38-year-old man commits suicide

Panchkula, October 30
A 38-year-old man today committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence in Abhaypur, Sector 19, Panchkula. The victim, identified as Jai Inder, was suffering from dengue for the past many days and was in depression ever since. He was rushed to the General Hospital, Sector 6, where he was declared brought dead.

Inder runs a fast food rehri near his residence. The deceased hails from Nepal and is survived by his wife and four children.

According to Kul Bahadur, the father of Inder, the latter was in severe depression ever since he was suffering from dengue. “Today morning his mother went to call him. They were supposed to meet the doctor today. She found the room locked and felt suspicious. When we peep through the window we saw him hanging from the fan,” said Kul Bahadur.

“No suicide note was found from the spot and a case has been registered. Our investigations are on,” said ASI Ishwar Chand of the Sector 19 police post.

Youth held with 90 gm of opium

Panchkula, October 30
A youth was arrested from Chandimandir toll plaza by Panchkula police for carrying 90 gm of opium this evening.

The accused, identified as Ravi Kant Sharma, was nabbed with the drug in his car by the Panchkula Crime Investigating Agency. Sharma is reportedly a worker of the HJC Youth Party and a resident of Sector 11, Panchkula. He was on his way to Panchkula from Pinjore when he was arrested, said police. “We laid a trap and the accused was caught with the opium on his dashboard. He had a sticker affixed on his car stating the HJC Youth Party,” said In-charge of the CIA, Inspector Surinder Singh.

He further added, “Sharma will be produced in the court tomorrow.” The police is yet to investigate about the customer links of Sharma where he used to sell the drugs. According to the police, he had a big network and many other big names can be revealed.

“Sharma also used the name of a known political leader on the spot when we nabbed him. He said he is special person and can easily get us grilled. But we arrested him,” said another police on the condition of anonymity. –– TNS

Tennis champions get suitcases, not medals

The lawn tennis team of Panjab University, after securing the second position in the North-Zone Inter-University Tennis Tournament, was awarded with suitcases instead of medals and certificates by the Deenbandu Chhoturam University of Science and Technology, Sonepat (Murthal), today.

According to the director sports of the university, the team was awarded with suitcases as a gesture of love and pride. “We have awarded them suitcases because medals are of no use. They will get the certificates in the all-India edition of the tourney. They can use the suitcases in any way they want. We are not authorised to give any certificates. It is better that they should be awarded with a materialistic thing than a cheap medal,” said Dr Birender Hooda, director of sports.

The first three position holders of any recognised tournament are expected get certificates, which will helps them to avail all benefits. “We were shocked to learn that this is the only prize we are being awarded with. A certificate holds more importance than these materialistic things. We don’t know why they have awarded us with this suitcase,” said Rupinder Singh Saini, coach of the team.

Prabhsimrat Kaur Sandhu, a player, said, “This is the third time I am representing the Panjab University in the north-zone and all-India level games. I have never come across such an incident. Certificates are importance and moreover, in every inter-university competition the orgainser award certificate to the position holders. These certificates are the only proof of our achievements.”
