Five quintal of sweets destroyed

Ambala, October 23
A team of the Food and Security Department, led by Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr VK Sharma, conducted raids at several sweet manufacturing units in Ambala City today.

The raids were conducted to check adulterated sweets in the wake of Dasehra and Diwali festivals. The team raided a “petha” manufacturing factory and destroyed around 5 quintal of “petha” kept in unhygienic conditions. The team found that the workers preparing sweets were not wearing any gloves. The team also raided a shop where a large quantity of “petha” was stored in its godown. –– OC

Children celebrate Durga Navmi

To mark the ninth day of Navratris, Durga Navmi was celebrated with full zeal at DAV Public School, Bhupindra Road, Patiala. School Principal SR Prabhakar was the chief guest on the occasion.

The function commenced with an invocation to Goddess Durga and Lord Rama. A fancy-dress competition was held for the students of Classes III to V. The students adorned the attires of various characters from the Ramayana and enacted scenes like Shravan Katha, Shabri Ke Ber, Sita Haran, victory of Rama over Ravana in an impressive manner.

It was followed by ‘Kanya Pujan’, in which approximately 200 angels of pre- primary wing were worshipped as ‘Kanjaks’. Many students spoke on the significance of the festival.

SR Prabhakar congratulated the teachers and the students for putting up such a magnificent show. While addressing the students, he highlighted that Goddess Durga is an epitome of power, piousness and ferocity. The festival of Navratri is celebrated to imbibe these virtues in one’s life.

He very aptly added that though the effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhkaran are burnt every year but the real monsters of corruption, communalism and terrorism still prevail in the society.

There is an urgent need to eradicate these vices from society. The function concluded with the burning of the effigies of corruption, communalism and terrorism.

First Dussehra Cup begins tomorrow

First Dussehra Cup (U-15) Invitational Cricket Tournament will begin at the Black Elephant Cricket Ground from October 25 to 28. Four teams from the north zone, including AGA Amritsar, Dronacharya Cricket Foundation, Delhi, Chandigarh Cricket Association, Sector 16, and Black Elephant Cricket Club, Patiala, have confirmed their participation. All matches will be of 50 overs. The final will be played on October 28.

Three drug peddlers arrested

Fatehgarh Sahib, October 23
The district police today has arrested three drug peddlers from different places and recovered 60 kg poppy husk from them.

SSP HS Mann said CIA staff caught hold of a person and recovered 10 kg of poppy husk from him. He was identified as Rajwant Singh, alias Babbu, a resident of Amloh.

Similarly, anti-narcotic cell during a naka arrested two peddlers. They were identified as Kallu Sharma, a resident of MP and Rajat Bansal, from Rajasthan. The police recovered 50 kg of poppy husk from them.

All the accused were booked under the NDPS Act and produced in the court. They were also sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

Road Rage
Accused identified, Gypsy impounded

A day after the assault of a law student at the Leisure Valley in Sector 10 following a road rage incident, the police has identified all the six accused in the case and raids are on to nab them. The police said the accused had been involved in similar incidents of road rage in the past too and they are absconding.

A law student of Panjab University was seriously injured when youths in a gypsy beat him up with baseball bats last evening.

The injured included Sahib Singh Mangat, who is a close relative of a Punjab Minister. He was rushed to the hospital with injuries on his head and the police had registered a case of attempt to murder at the Sector 3 police station.

The BMW car number PB 24 D 0001 of Sahib was making rounds of the road opposite the Leisure valley. They were confronted by youths in a Gypsy who were also racing on the road.

A heated scuffle ensued amongst the youths in a Gyspy and the four occupants of the BMW, including Sahib, who was on the driving seat. The assailants then took out a baseball bat and smashed the windowpanes of the BMW and then attacked Sahib on the head with the bat.

DSP Ashish Kapoor said the accused would be behind bars soon and their Gypsy had been impounded. “We suspected it to be the handiwork of same youths who had conducted similar ruckus last month. We raided their residence and they were found to be abscnding. The victim has identified the car as the same one and all the accused will be nabbed soon,” he said.

Chandigarh academy lift trophy

Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA) overcame Dalbir Football Academy, Patiala, to lift the 10th edition of UT Administrator Football Cup for Boys (U-17) at the football stadium in Sector 17 today. In the most excited encounter of the tourney, the local stars defeated their rivals by a solitary goal. The team showcased a perfect combination of skill and presence of mind.

Although, the visiting side, dominated the first half, they failed to convert most of the chances.

The team almost took the lead but their star striker Jaspreet failed to divert a half-volley shot inside the nets.

In the second half, the team started playing short passes and landed the rival defense in trouble. International player Danial helped the team win in the 84th minute.

Earlier, Mahilpur Football Academy secured the third place after defeating Gorkha Training Centre 3-1. The winners got Rs 2,00,000 and runners-up bagged Rs 1,00,000. The team finishing third were given Rs 50,000.

Sandeep shoots bronze

Sandeep Sharma (21) clinched a bronze medal in the recently held Singapore Open Shooting Championship held at Singapore. Sandeep scored 577 points out of total 600 in .22 rifle peep sight (-3P) to bag the honour. 

A total of 18 countries participated in the competition organised by the Singapore Rifle Association in association with the Singapore Sports Council. Sandeep has also won a number of national championships in Ahmedabad, Pune, Delhi and Dehradun. Sandeep credited his coach with his success.

Cricket: Punjab script facile win against J&K

Punjab batsman Bhupinder Singh scored 151 off 141 studded with 15 boundaries and six sixes against JKCA in the ongoing Vinoo Mankad Trophy.

With his brilliant knock, the team scored a total of 282 runs and defeated the rivals. Vicky Sharma contributed 28 runs and stitched a 99-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Bhupinder. In reply, JKCA were bundled out on 126 for 6 in 41 over. Paras Sharma scored unbeaten 50 off 99 with three boundaries while Mohd Hazik Bhatt (29) was the other main contributor. For bowling side, Siddharth Sharma grabbed 2 for 22 while Amrit Pal Bajwa and Vinay Chaudhary claimed one wicket each.

In the second match at GMSSS, Sector 26, Delhi defeated Himachal Pradesh by five wickets and garnered four points. Batting first, Himachal were bowled out for 171 in 46.3 overs. Ankit Kalsi (56 off 84) and Nakulraj Sharma (36 off 55) were the main scorers. For Delhi, Sarang Rawat was the highest wicket taker with 3 for 31 while Shivam Sharma and Nitish Rana claimed two wickets each.

In reply, the winning side scored 175 for 5 in 49.2 overs. Akarshit Gumail after scoring 47 runs guided the team to victory. Bowler, Arjun Sharma took 3 for 34.
