SSP Ravcharan Singh Brar (left) tries to pacify the crowd that gathered in Dhobi Bazaar after two youths were allegedly slapped by policemen on duty in Bathinda on Sunday evening

Bathinda, October 21
The drive by the police to enforce traffic rules in the city ran into a roadblock on Sunday when people vent their ire on the cops today after two youths on a bike were allegedly slapped by the constables of the newly-formed Eagle Squad, who were on duty at the Sadbhawna Chowk in the busy Dhobi Bazaar area today in the evening.

Local residents, most of them shopkeepers and youngsters, alleged that the youths had been slapped in full public view without being in the wrong.

The youths, reportedly the son of a jeweller and the son of the owner of a bike showroom, were asked to stop by the police near Sadbhawna Chowk. The youths claimed that they had all the required documents of the bike, still were slapped in full public view.

No sooner did the incident take place than a crowd surrounded the policemen who had slapped the two youths and tried to manhandle them.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ravcharan Singh Brar rushed to the site of the incident and pacified the residents who had turned up in large numbers, raising slogans against the policemen.

Later, talking to the media, the SSP assured that nobody would be allowed to take the law into their hands irrecpective of whether they were policemen, criminals or the commoners.

The SSP denied that he had given any instructions to the cops to beat up bike riders or the youths creating nuisance at random and said disciplinary action would be initiated against the policemen accused of thrashing the youths.

Brar, however, added that first an inquiry would be conducted into the incident after which action would be initiated. He asked the two youths, Jolly and Anmol, to meet him later to sort out the issue.

Local residentsm, Tinku, Vicky, Manoj, Rohit, Sushil and others argued with the SSP over the rising number incidents in which such incidents were taking place in the city.

They alleged before the SSP that those who do not possess any documents manage to speed past the police nakas while others having complete or nearly complete documents have to face such situations.

Aman Kumar, a roadside vendor, who witnessed today's incident, said he noticed two youths being stopped by the policemen. "Though I have no idea what went wrong but the cops first slapped the youths. When one of the youths shouted at the cops as to why they had done so, the youth was again slapped three or four times in full public view," said Aman. He added that the youths were ordered to reach the police station upon which a crowd gathered and threatened the policemen on duty.

He pointed out that the crowed had also tried to manhandle the policemen but heavy police force reached the spot within no time.

"Crime incidents are not going to reduce this way. Instead, it is fanning public anger against the policemen. This is the fourth such incident in the city in the recent past," said a city resident Vijay Kumar.

Earlier, the police was accused of beating up a shopkeeper near the Thermal lakes and a youth near the Ghorewala Chowk. Two deaf and dumb boys were also roughed up near the Tinkoni chowk," Vijay Kumar said.

He said though only one person had lodged a written complaint against the Bathinda police, others had failed to come up with similar complaints.

"The deaf and dumb boys were riding a motorbike and failed to hear the cops because of their physical disability. The cops instead of issuing a challan or impounding their bike, beat them up in full public view," Vijay Kumar added.

He said the relatives had brought the matter to the notice of Kotwali police but they had refused to lodge a written complaint.

The Eagle Squad of the police comprised two cops each on nine motorbikes and was formed to check incidents of eve-teasing, snatching and triple-riding among others.
