He’s got the power…
Jaspal Bhatti’s movie Power Cut aims to not only highlight the issue of power failures, but is also a satire on those in power
Manpriya Singh

on a song: Jaspal Bhatti (pink turban) with the cast of the movie Power Cut

The title Power Cut and Jaspal Bhatti put together take care of a lot of explanations. The fact that the satirist takes his comedy seriously goes without saying, as also the fact that he likes to poke fun while passing a message. There’s more. “The word power stands for not just electricity but in this movie I was trying to deal with the other angle of power too,” he shares, while kick-starting the promotions from Chandigarh.

Nothing may be as irking as a power cut, but revolving a film around the subject was something of a challenge, “I like to deal with drier subjects and accept the challenge of making them juicier by deriving humour out of them.” Fitted in is a cast comprising three promising debutants and a couple of bouncy Punjabi tracks that easily match up to the bar, if not raise it! However, what we look forward to the most is the insinuations and the mockery of electricity departments against the backdrop of the political culture. Something, for which, he didn’t have to do a lot of research, because, “my father retired as the chief in the Punjab State Electricity Board, so I am very well aware of the working and functioning of these departments.” Nevertheless, it took about, “six to seven months of writing and getting the script ready.”

Son shines

At a regional level, he’s a star kid debuting with the right role and who is, “alright to any comparisons that people make with my father.” Jasraj Singh Bhatti has been more than involved right from the beginning. “I am acting in the movie and debuting with it, but that’s not it. I have been a part of it right from day one and ground zero, as an associate director, editor and the marketing man.”

He adds, “I am fond of direction and that’s what I see myself doing eventually. This was an interesting role that just came up and during this process I enjoyed acting as well.” Meanwhile, there’s Jaswinder Bhalla, high on the success of Carry On Jatta, playing the village jester, along with Jaspal Bhatti. Says Jaspal, “I play a consumer in the movie.”

The newcomers

Cut to the other two; there’s a Zafar Khan, a MAD Arts product and as Savita Bhatti puts it, “We are trying to cash in on the Khan name,” whose character’s called Current. Adds Jaspal Bhatti, “These days a lot of Punjabi movies are being made with singers playing the lead; he plays a singer.” Carrying the metaphor forward is the female lead Surilie Gautam, younger sister of Yami Vicky Donor Gautam, who plays a character called Bijli. Post the formal and indispensable “greetings and gratitude,’ they are keeping their fingers crossed for October 26, when the movie hits the screens — a time that’ll see a couple of big banners too. Nods Savita Bhatti, “The audience for a Punjabi movie is quite exclusive and loyal; provided you give them a good subject, which has been treated well.”

Up next

Female foeticide, environment, sinking water table... unfortunately, there are a host of problems to highlight in Punjab. What is Jaspal Bhatti eyeing next? He says, “Although I feel issues related to drugs and the NRI diaspora has been highlighted, they too were tackled seriously and never in a light manner. Our depleting water table has not been highlighted at all in the movies. And even environmental degradation. Let’s see, maybe I take up these issues.”

Speed Star: Neel Jani

Constantly travelling is Red Bull’s daring driver Neel Jani’s life. This 19-year-old Swiss race car driver had the adventure of his lifetime as he took up the challenge to take Formula 1 car to the world famous Khardung-La pass.

The tough drive — lack of oxygen on the high altitude (18,380 feet), roads not suitable for a formula car and extreme weather — tested this young racer’s resolve, but the experience turned out to be more than a memorable one for Neel, who flew from one race in Japan to another in Atlanta with his packed itinerary taking him back to China, this time in a week’s time. “I definitely want to race around every weekend in some corner of the world,” says Neel.

Khardung-La pass challenge was special for Neel for reasons more than one. “Preparing for extreme climate and driving a formula car on roads not meant for it was a huge challenge. It turned out to be an experience of a lifetime,” says Neel, who shares a deep bond with India.

Born to a Swiss mother and an Indian dad, he often visits Anand, Gujarat, to meet his extended family. “The six-day stint at the picturesque Leh was not only a challenging drive, but also gave me the opportunity to experience Indian way of life completely,” says Neel, who finds his profession as risky as any other.

As for future goals, he says, “Being happy by doing what I like and making a difference wherever I can.”

Catch him on Khardung-La: Race Car Extreme that premieres on Sunday, October 21, at 8 pm on Discovery Turbo.

The exhibition, Le Corbusier 125, highlights the design elements of two cities La Chaux De Fonds and City Beautiful
Manpriya Singh

Each canvas celebrates the beauty of sectoral grids and the structures that are so characteristic of Chandigarh and its architect. Le Corbusier 125, the ongoing exhibition at Alliance Francaise, is a parallel between two cities—La Chaux De Fonds and Chandigarh--a place where Le Corbusier was born and a place where he was redefined.

Shares Claude Aubsburger, the curator, “This exhibition has been inspired by the chessboard design of La Chaux de Fonds, which was his birthplace and City Beautiful.”

About 30 works by the students in graphics and multimedia from the School of Applied Arts of La Chauds-de-Fonds, a place where Le Corbusier studied and taught, are on display. “I had to select about 30 works from among 200. It was tough but I was looking for colour and also for quality in terms of composition.”

The chessboard-inspired designs celebrate some colour amidst straight lines. There is a an orange lying parallel to a pink, cut and dried cemented structures, plan of the city of La Chaux De Fonds, Government College of Art, Chandigarh, a portrait of Le Corbusier bordering on the abstract and a white house. “This white house is actually one of his early works called Maison Blanche. It’s a place that he built for his parents in 1912. Not many people know but Le Corbusier wasn’t a student of architecture. In fact, he studied engravings,” says Aubsburger.

He adds, “The biggest sensibility in his works lies in the fact that he felt the relationship between paintings and architecture.”

On till October 31Alliance Francaise.

It will soon become the official uniform of the Indian women--the anarkali suits. Different colours, different designs, it is difficult to pass a stall at JW Marriott without noticing the attire. The on-going two-day exhibition Celebrations- The fashion Festival at JW Marriott seems to have attracted buyers.

Neatly put up stalls in the lawns of the property have quite a few things which you would need for the upcoming festive and wedding season. Designer suits from Delhi, predominantly anarkali and designer duppattas are part of the ethnic collection. Completing the look, is the traditional jewellery made from precious and semi- precious gemstones.

Pet passion
When Goofy-ing up is fun
Manpriya Singh

Jerome K Jerome could never emphasize enough about his lazy dog Montmorency in the famous Three Men In a Boat. He perhaps, never counted the four legged fourth character, on board too, “whose ambition in life was to get in the way and be sworn at.” Laughs Aarti Talwar, BA, 2nd year student, “My dogs are so lazy. They do nothing all day but sleep. Even now they are sleeping.” She too can’t emphasize enough the characteristics of her both six-year-old labrador and basset hound.

She adds, “In fact, during the day they are lolling about all the time. So much so that they won’t even get up to smell anybody entering the house.”

Love me, love my dog

Even while not doing anything, the duo never failed to cheer her up when she lost her first dog last month. She chooses to begin with the golden brown labrador called Bruno.

“It was gifted to me by my brother’s friend. And Bruno is very possessive about my mother. He just won’t let anybody come near her.” She adds, “Bruno’s also very hyper, he’s always ready to go out of the house.” It’s a bitter sweet relationship. She adds, “I keep troubling him because he doesn’t listen to me and if I call him, he doesn’t come.” Then there are ways they more than make up for the follies. “They give you a grand welcome every time. Even if you are coming back from the market, just the car’s horn is more than enough to make them receive you.”

Yours faithfully

Over to the other among the two, the white, brown and black Basset Hound called Goofy. “He was again gifted by my cousin.” A gift she’s treasured for six years now. She laughs, “The thing about Goofy is that he stinks a lot. Apart from that he’s lazy. If he weren’t, there would be lots of stuff to share about him. But sleeping tops his priority list. It’s at night that these guys bark at anybody coming towards the house.”

There may be a lot of criticism, but there are no complaints. “The best thing about owning pets is that you can talk to them, anytime. If you are a bit low, their presence takes care of a lot of things. They are always there to give you company.” We guess that universally sums up all the pet owners.

it’s rocking
It’s got the Style

Music indeed has no language. The track Gangnam Style which is a single by South Korean rapper PSY (Park Jae-Sang) has become the talk of the town, nay, talk of the world! The song was released on July 15 as the lead single of his sixth studio album—PSY’s Best 6th Part 1 and it spread like a wildfire through Internet. Till October 13 the music video has been viewed over 460 million times on YouTube, and is the site's most watched K-pop video. PSY's music is a satirical take on the shallow lifestyle of Gangnam residents.

Addictive song

It was through my friends’ status on Blackberry messenger that I got to know about this song,Gangnam Style. I love the hilarious dance step and the video. You don’t understand the lyrics but the video makes you addicted to it.

Akshay Handa, young entrepreneur

Dancing beat

If one hasn’t heard of Gangnam Style one is surely not from this planet. In fact, if you don’t know about this track you are looked down upon. But after listening to it you will not stop talking about it. I can only understand Hey Sexy Lady, Oppa Gangnam style. And the best part is the horse dance.

Parul Sharma, student, MCM College

Absolute fun

You just can’t stop laughing when you see the video even if you don’t understand a word of it. The music cheers you up. I think it’s like Kolaveri Di where the track becomes famous because of its concept.

Golden hues
Former Miss India Nikita Anand showcases the abiding lure of the yellow metal on her show Oh My Gold on TLC…
Ashima Batish

People down South seem oblivious to the soaring prices of the metal. They don't necessarily look forward for occasions to buy gold, they buy it whenever they want to nikita anand

How does it matter if in the last one year gold prices have shot up roughly by 3,000 rupees? People might fret over the fact, but that's what is intriguing about the yellow metal. It sells and people buy, no matter what. Nikita Anand, former Miss India, once again voluntarily takes up the charge to solve this mystery with her show Oh My Gold on TLC. The show will enter its second edition from October 22 and this time it focuses on Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram for jewellery trends.

Beginning her research from South India, she came across certain interesting facts, "People down South seem oblivious to the soaring prices of the metal. They don't necessarily look forward for occasions to buy gold, they buy it whenever they want to," says Nikita. Besides figuring out the trends, this time, she is trying to understand the sensibilities of people while buying gold. "People aspire for the metal for various reasons; it is an excellent investment. It serves the dual purpose of creating an asset and ornamentation."

Those who buy the metal just for the love of it are the ones for whom all the experiments with the design are being done. "White gold is as much in demand as the yellow colour. While a few years back, people thought diamond jewellery might replace gold, it failed to do so; courtesy, the designer part." The show also discovers how significance of gold varies in different regions of India. The filigree art of Kolkata is still as popular. The wire-works in fact have been adapted by designers across the country to modernise jewellery designing. "Then there is emergence of crochet jewellery, where the intricate work makes it a hit with youngsters."

No wonder, she says, there is a jewellery week dedicated to the cause of designing. "The sources of inspiration are several." The gold-laden temples of South India indicate the love for the metal since centuries. The craftsmen of West Bengal also have a story to tell. The heirloom pieces are referred to every now and then. And the India International Jewellery week is another added factor. "Gold makes for a great subject for the series." Indeed it does!

Crawling glory
Manpriya Singh

For someone who has a collection of reptiles and amphibians — a few Mediterranean tortoises, spotted turtles, geckos, skinks, snakes and even an axolot — life is pretty sorted! When children his age were visiting zoos, he was hiding all the creepy crawlies at home. Nigel Marven didn't have to think hard for future; the wildlife enthusiast, film-maker and television reporter just had to be where he is. "I've always been fascinated by nature and wildlife. As a child, I drove my parents mad with all the animals and creepy crawlies I kept in our house."

It is October and a 'Nigel Marven Month' on the Animal Planet — a selection of wildlife programmes in which the adventurer encounters some of the world's most interesting and sometimes misunderstood creatures. No wonder, even now the collection of pets at home comprises reptiles, amphibians and the like. "I also have a couple of owls-Oscar, an eagle-owl and Misty, a great grey." Among the travels and wildlife adventures that take him far and further, very few areas remain unexplored. "I'd love to explore Madagascar; it's such a unique place and full of fabulous animals like chameleons, lemurs and many birds found nowhere else on earth."

The Indian connection

His visits have taken him to mystery lands, far-flung places, every nook and corner and some god-forsaken belts. As for India, he's experienced quite some things. "I've been to India about four times, but I'd like to come back more. I've been on holiday to Goa; I love India." He adds, "Well I'm a vegetarian, so it's fantastic food in India. I always like going to India, because of the lovely food. It's one of the best places on the earth to see birds very closely."

If you happen to be a snake-lover, this is it. "I'm a great snake-lover and the Nag Panchami in Shirala, Maharashtra, was something that I will never forget. People bring out cobras from the field and basically worship them." Needless to add, he thinks, "It's a nice place to visit," and wants his future film to be shown in India as well. He shares, "The film is about following grey whales on their migration." And what's premiering in India right now is the series he is very proud of, "It's called Untamed China, which is about the wildlife there." manpriya@tribunemail.com

Campus tales
Campus movies can be watched at any age and they warm your heart. With Student of The Year releasing this week, we bring you a list of college campus movies you can watch over the weekend

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander
: Mansoor Khan's movie is a cult classic. With all the usual elements such as rich and poor students, simple girl, glamorous girl, rivalry and more, the highlight was the nail-biting cycle race climax of the movie. Pahla nasha from this one still rules hearts.

Student of the Year
: Karan Johar has made yet another sweet and entertaining movie about campus friendship and romance with three newcomers: Alia Bhatt, Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan. Yes, it has its larger-than-life elements that we love about KJo's cinema.

Rang De Basanti
: Aamir Khan led a gang of aimless, good-hearted students who never wanted to grow up. And then they found their calling and laid down their lives for it. The engaging narrative was enhanced by AR Rahman's youthful score. The title track became sort of national anthem.

Rockstar
: We loved Janardhan Jakhad's transformation into Jordan and it all began with him singing, playing the guitar and meeting Heer Kaul (Nargis Fakhri) on the Delhi University campus. The Junglee Jawani scene is the highlight of the campus shots.

Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na
: Abbas Tyrewala's romantic comedy captured campus friendships and best-friend romance wonderfully. Who can forget the lovely song Kabhi kabhi Aditi shot at St Xavier's College, Mumbai? Pappu ruled the charts as well. Imran Khan won many hearts with this one.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai:
This is the movie that gave Karan Johar an identity and boost to the careers of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. KJo infused new life into Bollywood with this evergreen movie.

Sridevi talks English Vinglish
Sridevi is absolutely delighted with the spectacular response to English Vinglish. She talks about the movie and her future plans.

Success tastes sweet: Sridevi

Promoting picture

I am still promoting it. We made it on a budget of Rs15 crore and it has made more than Rs 40 crore in just two weeks. I think people liked it because they could relate to it. There were expressions, no melodrama and it was sensitive.

Dazed state

I am not feeling anything at the moment. I am still dazed. I am not able to perceive what is happening around me. I guess it will still take some time to realise it. It felt very different to shoot after fifteen years. So much has changed here.

Taste of success

After the release of the movie, the box-office numbers are the distributors' and producers' domain. For me, of course, the success of the film matters, but the first thing is how the audiences are going to receive the film. The success then follows. You can never get used to success. Every time it is a new thing. Every time you feel different.

Script matters

It's all about the script. I don't want to do something which makes me feel uncomfortable. It should suit my image and age. Boney Kapoor is really involved. We share everything. He also read the script of English Vinglish. We think alike and this makes it easier.

New films

I have some scripts that have been given to me. I will read them soon after I finish promoting English Vinglish completely. I haven't signed anything else.

Justin, Jessica Biel get married

Man and wife: Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake

ctor-singer Justin Timberlake and fiance Jessica Biel tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Italy. The couple have been together for five years, and have enjoyed a ten month engagement. "It's great to be married, the ceremony was beautiful and it was so special to be surrounded by our family and friends," the couple said in a statement. They enjoyed three days of celebrations, which began on Wednesday at a beach party that included fireworks and live music. On Thursday they hosted another party which included anti-pasti and open fires. Both Biel and Timberlake had been honest about their wedding and relationship to the world.

"I think it's important to remember that you go into something like marriage knowing that you don't know very much about it at all," Timberlake had said.

The wedding was awash with security, and reportedly guests were required to sign a non-disclosure agreement to protect the privacy of the newlyweds.

Both Timberlake and Biel have a long history of Hollywood dating, with Timberlake famously dating Britney Spears, as well as a highly publicised relationship with Cameron Diaz. Biel has dated Ryan Reynolds in the past. — PTI

Image makeover

Mass appeal: Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor is in need of a hit film. He is also open to an image makeover. After going rugged for Kaminey, becoming a pilot in Mausam, and donning three avatars in Teri Meri Kahaani, he will get yet another new look for Prabhudeva's film titled Namak.

A source says, "Prabhudeva is all set to give him a more mainstream look because he is an expert at catering to the masses and Shahid wants to widen his appeal. The director is taking a keen interest in Shahid's look and styling. Salman had a casual look in Wanted and Akshay Kumar made a statement with bright pants and shirts. So that way something unique is being planned for pretty boy Shahid." The source adds, "Shahid will also get a signature move from Prabhu Deva. Shahid is a fabulous dancer anyway and the songs in Prabhu's movies always are big hits. Salman Khan had a collar step in Wanted and Akshay Kumar had a unique hand clap in Chinta ta in Rowdy Rathore so something like that will be designed for Shahid too to make him the darling of the masses." This project rolls soon. Shahid is also busy with another three movies.

Stars are born

Student of the Year is all set to be a blockbuster. The media loved it and it is the big release this week. The music is a hit and shows are going house full. Karan Johar and the entire team is all smiles and stars are born!

Strange name

Name game: Rhehan Malliek and Preity Zinta

We just found out that Preity Zinta's name is Ishkq in Ishkq in Paris and the guy's name is Akash. That is a strange name for a girl. We wonder what the explanation is. Gotta say that PZ looks good!

Dubbing issues

Zilla Ghaziabad was stuck for a few months as Sanjay Dutt had not dubbed for the movie. Now the producer Vinod Bachchan can heave a sigh of relief as Dutt has completed dubbing for it. He even liked the movie when he saw it.

Cricket craze

Another venture
Riteish Deshmukh

Riteish Deshmukh has bought a team in the Celebrity Cricket League. He has named his team Veer Marathi and will be roping in the leading actors from the Marathi film industry.

The year ahead
Madan Gupta Spatu

If your birthday is October 21...

Your birthday falls this year on the seventh day of auspicious Navratras. A person who seeks you out deliberately to talk to you seems to know a lot about an incident they had no involvement in. You suspect they're being fed information from someone at work. Before you give away any further information, ask yourself why they are so interested in a topic that should be of no concern to them. It could be someone is using them to find out how much you know.

Put the time to good use. Although you won't want to work round the clock, you'll still enjoy spending a few hours of activities that you consider to be important or urgent. A conversation with a colleague or relative will help you to sort out certain problems.

Family life is quite exciting. You will feel slightly run-down mentally and physically. A little rest and nutritious food will go a long way in lifting your energy. Control your expenses. Take advantage of the free time you have to help your family members. Sudden change in romance will upset you. Defer new project and expenses. Your brain is working like a well-oiled piece of machinery, and it's a pleasure to use it because the results will be so worthwhile. You will have to devote a significant amount of time for official travel. You need to ensure financial safety. Certain changes in family life may occur. Good health is indicated.

You'll soon be able to overcome all your difficulties but try not to invade co-workers' space if you don't want to be criticised. Your interest in a new friend will make your partner angry, so expect spiteful remarks.

Support your big idea with analysis and projections as the week begins. Show how it'll work in the real world. Then get ready to excel if your work is related to sales. Aim high and you'll surprise yourself; and no matter what your arena is, do not miss the cosmic opportunity to sell your image. If you let your heart rule, you will make a disastrous decision.
