Two killed in road accidents

Dera Bassi, October 18
A motorcycle-borne youth died in a road accident near Dera Bassi on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as 30-year-old Dharmender Kumar of Bihar. Dharmender was residing at Industrial Focal Point.

Sources said an unknown vehicle hit him around 11 pm and he died on the spot due to severe head injury. The Dera Bassi police has sent the body for the post-mortem. A case has been registered.

In another incident , a 60-year-old man was killed in a road accident near Krala village on Rajpura- Chandigarh road on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Amar Singh, a resident of Krala village. The accident occurred when the victim was trying to a turn towards his village and suddenly a car coming from Rajpura side hit him. He died on the spot and the body was handed over to the relatives after conducting post-mortem. The police has registered a case against an unidentified car driver under Sections 279 and 304A of the IPC.

People oppose dismantling of Banur police station

Banur, October 18
People of Banur area held a protest against the notification of the Punjab Government through which the Banur police station would be dismantled. Leaders and workers of all political parties assembled and formed a 21-member committee to oppose the government's decision.

According to the proposal, villages, which come under the police station, will be attached to Zirakpur, Sohana and Lalru police stations. They people have given an ultimatum of one week to cancel the notification. The people said the move would create law and order problem. Meanwhile, local MLA Hardyal Singh Kamboj said dismantling of the police station was an injustice to the people. He demanded that the Punjab Government should cancel the notification in public interest.

District-level girls' sports meet begins

Fatehgarh Sahib, October 18
The Sports and Youth Services Department in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India organised a two-day district-level girls' tournament under the Panchyat Yuva Krida Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA) Scheme of the Government of India today. The tournament is being held at BBSB Engineering College. Mansa Singh, former District Sports Officer, inaugurated the tournament.

Jasbir Pal Kaur Brar, District Sports Officer, said more than 200 girl were participating in the competitions. The winners will represent Fatehgarh Sahib at the state-level inter-district tournament. She said the new sports policy of the Punjab Government was being implemented at village level and youngsters were being motivated to adopt sports. — OC

116 donate blood

Dera Bassi, October 18
The local unit of Bharat Vikas Parisad organised a blood donation camp at Punjab College of Engineering and Technology, Lalru. Over 116 students of the college donated blood.

A team of doctors from the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, had collected blood. The camp was inaugurated by college director, VP Battra, and additional director, Vijay Arora. — OC

Apna Ghar case
Bail application of accused dismissed

Panchkula, October 18
The Panchkula CBI court today dismissed the bail application of Sheela, one of the accused in Apna Ghar case. Meanwhile, accused Satish and Jai Bhagwan refused to go for a DNA test till they get a copy of the statement of the girl, who reportedly got pregnant.

On August 7, the CBI had filed a chargesheet in the Apna Ghar case against seven accused. The accused were identified as Jaswanti Devi, her daughter Sushila alias Simmi, her son-in-law Jai Bhagwan, Satish, her brother Jaswant Singh, Veena and her cousin Sheela.

The accused had been charged under Sections 313, 376, 374 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The shelter home landed in a controversy when a team of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) raided it premises on May 9 and rescued its inmates.

The Apna Ghar shelter home was run by Bharat Vikash Sangh, an NGO, headed by Jaswanti Devi at Shrinagar Colony of Rohtak.

The inmates of Apna Ghar, Rohtak, had levelled serious allegations of rape and human trafficking against Jaswanti Devi, Sushila and the other accused.

As many as 103 inmates, mostly women and children, were shifted to other places after the incident.

Parents attacked, girl abducted

Mohali, October 18
The police has booked a resident of Ranimajra village on charge of kidnapping and causing hurt to a girl. In a complaint to the police, Gurmel Singh, a resident of Rasoolpur village, has said that Gurdeep Singh of Ranimajra village allegedly attacked him and his wife and abducted his daughter.

He forcibly took away his daughter on a motor cycle and they could not stop him as they suffered injuries in the attack.

He said they both were admitted to the Kharar Civil Hospital where they came to know that the kidnapper had released their daughter and she had returned home.

The police has registered a case against Gurdeep Singh under Sections 365, 323 and 506 of the IPC.

2 of immigration firm booked

The police has booked two persons of an immigration company functioning from Phase VI here on charge of duping people of Rs 19.25 lakh.

According to the police, Gurdeep Singh and Gurwinder Singh had complained that they had given Rs 19.25 lakh to Deepak Arora and Karandeep Singh for sending them abroad. The company neither sent them abroad nor returned their money.

After taking the district attorney’s opinion, a case was registered against the two under Sections 406, 420 and 120 B of the IPC.

2 held for blackmailing model

Zirakpur, October 18
The Zirakpur police has arrested two youths for blackmailing a model of Kalka after taking her pictures when she was changing her dress in a changing room of their film studio at Zirakpur.

The women strongly objected when she came to know about the hidden camera but instead of returning her the video clips and pictures, the youths started blackmailing her. It was some time back she came in contact with Sandip, alias Sonu, a resident of Pilibheet, Uttar Pradesh, who was running a film studio at Zirakpur.

On his invitation, she had come to the studio last week and was asked to change her dress when the accused took the pictures and made video clips. When the model noticed the camera and demanded the pictures and video clips, the youths pressurised her to have physical relations with them. Later, the girl approached the police. After receiving complaint, the police arrested Sandip and his accomplice Tejinder Gupta of Ambala. A case under Sections 294, 509 and 420 of the IPC. Later, both the accused were sent to14-day judicial remand.

Gorkha Training Center register impressive victory

The soccer team of the Gorkha Training Center, Shillong, thrashed JJ Institute of Soccer, Bangalore, in a one-sided affair, during the 10th Administrator's Challenge Cup All-India Football tournament, being held here today.

The team registered a 19-2 win over the rivals. Roshan Singh opened the account for the wining side after scoring the first goal in the 45th second of first minute. Rober Metei (6 goals), Noaba Meetei (5 goals), Japis Singh (3 goals), Md Ajmir and Pillercom (2 goals each), were the main goal scorers for the team.

In the second match of the day, the Madhya Pradesh Football Association defeated Haryana Football Association by 19- 0. L Nakul Singh of Madhya Pradesh Football Association scored 12 goals including two hat-tricks. Saifuddin (3 goals), Md Danish (2 goals), Avinash Thakur and Chander Pal Singh (one goal each) were the other goal scorers.

Sahayatri Football Club, Howrah, overcame Football Coaching Centre, Assam, by 1-0. Saha scored the wining goal in the 71st minute of the game after a goalless first half.

500 participate in annual sports meet

GGS-Sachdeva Group of Institutes, Gharaun, organised 5th Annual Sports Meet-12 on the college campus. Around 500 students of B.Tech participated in the meet. The sports meet was flagged off by Surinder Pal Singh Sachdeva, Chairman, GGS-Sachdeva Group.

The main highlights of the event were 100 mt and 200 mt race, long jump, shot-put, discuss throw, relay, sack race, one leg race and three legged race.

GMSSS-35 win handball tourney

The handball team of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, (GMSSS-35) won the ongoing Inter-School Handball competition for boys (U-19), being held here today.

The GNKS School, Sector 30, and DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, secured second and third places, respectively. AKSIPS School, Sector 41, finished fourth in the competition.

Results:

DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, beat AKSIPS, Sector 41, by 18-13; Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35 beat GNK Senior Secondary School, Sector 30, by 30-29.

Sacred Heart-26, DAV-8 emerge victorious

The Sacred Heart Sr Sec-26, and DAV-8, won the finals of girls and boys category, respectively, during the concluding day of the North-Zone CBSE Handball Championship. The meet was held at Gian Jyoti Public School Phase-II, here today.

In the girls (U-19), Army Public School, Delhi Cantt, and DAV-Narayangarh, Ambala, secured runners-up and third place, respectively, while Guru Nanak Khalsa Sr Sec School-30, and SD Vidya Mandir, Ambala Cantt, finished 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Results: Girls (U-14): 1) Genius International School, Roopnagar. 2) Saint Marks Sr Sec School, Delhi. 3) Shivalik Public School-41.
