Diligent students
The actors in the upcoming movie Student Of The Year, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra have a story to tell and each of them narrate it well…
Ashima Batish

If behavioural studies are anything to go by, then that’s how it has been; at least in most such cases. For a ‘star’ kid to qualify as one, it’s mandatory to have lots of confidence, loads of attitude, a mindset that unapologetically believes that throwing tantrums is a birth-right; then comes good looks and an ‘in-shape’ body.

So, we put the cast of Student Of The Year under the scanner and test Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan for their ‘star kids’ symptoms. And voila, they fail, thankfully on two counts — attitude and tantrum-throwing capabilities! Along with Siddharth Malhotra, they came to Mohali to promote their film on Wednesday. Add to that their interaction with youngsters present at WWICS and you know Gen-Next stars realise that performance precedes background!

Talking film

Varun Dhawan will be seen essaying the role of Rohan Nanda, son of business tycoon. “There is a family discord and he thus looks for support outside the house.” The film is about love, friendship and a sports competition. Siddharth will play Abhimanyu Singh, who hails from a middle-class family and has got admission in a school on the basis of a scholarship. “It’s important for me to win the competition to get scholarship for a further course.” And Alia’s part, besides dancing in the film, is of a happy-go-lucky girl, Shania Singhania.

Their story

Each of them have had their bit of struggle — if for Varun and Alia it was losing flab, for Siddharth it was getting a break. First generation of actors always have interesting instances of life to share, “I came to Mumbai five years back and tried hard to get into the industry. I don’t have anybody back home whom I can turn to for advice. That’s where the disadvantage of being an industry outsider comes in.” He began by assisting Karan Johar on the sets of My Name Is Khan.

As for Alia, counselling was readily available but if she wanted it any easier, she could have entered with father Mahesh Bhatt’s film. “I rather preferred to audition with 400 girls for this role. It doesn’t sound nice when people assume that I had a cakewalk.” Not to forget, she got rid of some 16 kilos before she made up her mind to enter Bollywood. Varun has a similar story to tell, he blames his genes and Punjabi household for that. Help came in from dad David Dhawan in the form of constructive criticism, “It helped me develop the attitude that hardwork is indispensable for success.”

Karan, the mentor

Karan Johar, the director and co-producer of the film also played a mentor to actors. All three of them don’t stop showering praises on him for giving them the big break and believing in their capabilities. That’s quite expected! In chorus, they add, “We learnt a lot from him. He is a perfectionist. He made us slog till we got a shot right. Be it styling, dance sequences or our dialogue delivery, his involvement in the film was 100 per cent.” Varun and Siddharth who assisted him earlier, say Karan didn’t give them a special treatment during this film, “He’s different towards his actors because the challenge is bigger.”

Father figure

Till the completion of the film, no inputs came in from Mahesh Bhatt but once the shoot was wrapped up, father Bhatt started giving Alia important tips, “He believes in aggressive marketing. No matter how the film has been made, he feels it’s more important to take it to people in the right way.” For that, the first advice was to focus on speaking well than looking good, “Don’t you know how much he loves to talk. He wants me to do the same,” which she is doing to some extent.

Rare radiance
From old Mughal architecture to Turkish Ottoman Empire, Roopa Vohra’s designs dig into the past to create wonders of the present
Mona

Influences of different cultures merge together and afford a mesmerising touch to revivalist couture jeweller Roopa Vohra’s treasure trove. She is in Chandigarh with her jewels, looking more radiant than ever. Her collection, on display at the Capitol Hall, Taj -17, has her flagship Thewa work, exquisite naqaashi, royal Nilufer Hatun as well as her new Silver AJ collection.

Travelling is what she loves, in and out of arrivals and departures is where she picks up inspiration. Turkey influenced her so much that after four years of work she is ready with Nilufer Hatun collection, named after the Ottoman princess.

An aristocratic look here is created in gold and diamonds with immaculate stone settings. There are some exquisite pieces in Naqaashi, a lovely blend in gold and black. As are the range of charming bracelets with precious stones — uncut diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Her quick trip to Prague to drop off her daughter for a summer programme has left her in awe of the place. “What a fine blend of different forms of architecture,” she gushes. “It is going to be a collection inspired by Prague,” she says. Considering Nilufer Hatun took close to five years to materialise, also that Thewa — fusion of carved sheets of 23-carat gold fused into coloured glass to make artefacts and jewellery - took inspiration from Mughal era, you are in for a long wait for another grand collection!

Till that comes you can check out lovely cocktail jewellery, a bevy of beautiful earrings and more. Roopa has also brought her silver works. Priced at Rs 5,000 onwards, it’s a prêt version of her couture jewellery. This is her third visit to Chandigarh in the last one-and-a-half years; so overwhelming is the response to her here!

Trunk call
Evoluzione and Evolv, an exhibition at the Bella Vista in Panchkula, showcases an array of designs that are sure to please the connoisseur
Manpriya Singh

Sequins, fuschia, velvet …a few trends are some of the keywords at the ongoing trunk show, Evoluzione and Evolv at the Bella Vista in Panchkula. More than anything else, the price of the garment is parallel to the popularity of the designer. A quick glimpse and there are a couple of sections to begin from — the westerns, the ethnic, the formals and a few bridal outfits.

“When I had put up an exhibition in Delhi, I received a lot of requests from clients in Chandigarh. Based on that feedback, I put together this show for the first time in the city,” says the business head Gayatri Vasan.

The trunk comprises a healthy portfolio of some of the celebrated designers, a few upcoming, while others that just about ring a bell. To begin with, there’s Cue by Rohit Gandhi-Rahul Khanna, Anamika Khanna, Sabyasachi, Pankaj and Nidhi, Anju Modi, among others. “I brought ethnic stuff to the city because I thought ethnic would go well with the city’s fashion sensibilities. Cue by Rohit Gandhi Rahul Khanna is doing really well and so is Namrata Joshipura. Both are flying off the hangers.”

With just about everything thrown in, a couple of gowns, some shirts, a western dress or two by each designer, a mini collection in beiges, Anarkalis, cottons, churidaars; a few outfits in subtle colours, while others in loud, lots of pret and some couture, it’s a trunk show to the tee.

For those looking for couture that stands apart, collections by Anamika Khanna are worth a look. Then there’s Sabyasachi, a tag worth possessing, while the label cue takes care of westerns; all this with the claim that there’s no recycled fashion. “All the pieces exhibited are the latest collections of the designer. We are also planning to open a store next year,” she says.

Strictly for kids
Children of Chandigarh now have a place of their own to eat, play and learn
Sabia Talwar

A visit to this place and you want to be a kid again. And the place is Fun Factory, Sector-9, Chandigarh, which boasts of being one-of-its-kind in this region.

Says Monica Bansal, owner of Fun Factory, “I’m a mother and for my two-year-old daughter Nyra; I wanted a place where she would be safe and have a ball of a time.”

Enter, and towards left is the reception and on the right is The Window which is the exhibition area. A few steps more and you land at Light Box, which is a library for kids. Not to miss the special kid’s salon which is called Hello Kitty Salon. It is designed in pink with a hello kitty chair for the girls and a car chair for the boys. “The kids can get their hair cut, manicure and pedicure and nail art here,” explains Monica.

“Our first priority is birthday parties where we can accommodate up to 100 children. For kids, a birthday party is not just about interesting food but many other things as well,” adds Monica

And there you notice a party area Buntings and Balloons, which has a sitting area with colourful tables and chairs for the tiny tots. “There is a special buffet menu for parties,” Monica makes it clear.

And for pure fun, there is a play area called Giggles, which has imported toys and rides. “We also have a hobby area called Little Hands where we have roped in four teachers to teach the kids activities like caricatures, hair braiding, tattooing, balloon art and crafts for a monthly fees,” chips in Neeraj Bansal, Monica’s better half.

But wait, that’s not all. “When parents come with their kids they can sit and relax at Second Cup Café that serves Mediterranean, Italian and Continental refreshments,” adds Monica.

With up-side down ceramic cups used as light holders, nursery paintings on the walls, eye-catchy wall papers, the décor is quite catchy. “Every thing here is designed by me and my sister and I always wanted to do something unusual,” says Monica.

Just to avoid any confusion, the kids who just come for a visit will be charged Rs 250 (per child, per hour) and for the party poppers the charge is Rs 300 (per child, per hour). “We are open for kitty parties as well where the mommies can get their kids and enjoy themselves,” adds Monica.

A professional team of nannies to take care of the children and a team at the café’ to serve the best, one can indeed let one’s hair down. So, go ahead as their tag line says ‘Let’s Grow Together’.

Wedding vows

After a registered marriage, newly-weds Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor went in for an exchange of vows before hosting a grand reception that went on till the wee hours on Wednesday.

While there were rumours that a nikaah was held, Kareena's close friend and fashion designer Manish Malhotra said that there was a simple exchange of vows between the two actors, who have been dating for five years.

"They just exchanged vows at the Taj Mahal hotel in Colaba. There were no saath pheras... They did not adhere to any particular style (of wedding)," Malhotra said.

The marriage at Saif's residence here was a simple affair yesterday afternoon, but the post-wedding functions at the South Mumbai hotel saw a host of B-town celebs like Shah Rukh Khan with wife Gauri, Priety Zinta, Karan Johar, Tusshar Kapoor, Salman Khan's sister Alvira, Anil Kapoor with daughter Sonam.

Malhotra said that the 32-year-old actress wore Saif's grandmother's traditional gharara for the ceremony last night.

The actor's mother Sharmila Tagore had worn the same gharara at her own nikaah. She then passed it on to her son's new wife. — PTI

Saifeena gets vegan chocolate from PETA

With Bollywood star couple Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan tying the knot, PETA India are sending the gorgeous couple a sweet gift that will stand out.

The group is giving a flock of five large vegan chocolate chickens prepared by Delhi's Choco Kraft to the couple. No animals, including no chickens used for eggs and no cows used for dairy products, were harmed to make this compassionate gift.

"Kareena Kapoor is vegetarian and refused to eat eggs while filming Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu," says PETA India chief executive officer Poorva Joshipura. "What better occasion than this 'wedding of the year' for PETA to honour Kareena's compassion and to do our part to get Saifeena off to a deliciously sweet start in their new life together?" Well, sounds perfect. As they say, "Thoda meetha ho jaye!"

Shah Rukh Khan congratulates Saifeena!

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan congratulated couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor who tied the knot in a quiet affair after a five-year courtship on Tuesday. "Happiest marriage bond to my friend Saif & Kareena. May Allah keep ur family healthy & happy. Just saw it is registered, sealed & delivered," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, actor Tusshar Kapoor also wished the couple. 'All my love and the bestest wishes to my first 'heroine' Kareena on her wedding today to Saif Ali Khan! This one's surely a blockbuster!' he posted on his official page.

Voice over

Aakriti Kakkar is known for her songs in Johnny Gaddaar and her vocals which suit rock songs perfectly. The talented singer talks about her musical journey and more.

What do you love most about singing?

I feel blessed to be able to do something as rejuvenating as music for a profession. Singing keeps me from feeling low or lonesome and is medicinal. It's my best companion and the foremost love of my life.

What do you dislike about singing?

There is possibly nothing I can ever dislike about singing. Apart from the fact that when I sing, I feel nothing else. That may make me come across as a very "keeping to myself anti-social being" at times. But I like it like that.

How has your journey in Bollywood been?

It's been very fruitful and very heartening. A joy ride that has been such a learning experience! Hard work and patience is the key and even more important is to just keep doing your thing and not waiting for the results. It will come back to you in some way or the other. I've worked with the biggest music composers and learnt something from their styles of working and composing. I've been patient with the work I get and have been trying to do justice to them. I've learnt to just better myself with each passing day and that's what I compete with.

How would you describe your voice?

I'd like to believe that I'm a voice that fits into most genres if not all. I've been lucky enough to have sung everything from an item number in Marjaani for Billu and an emotional ballad Mohabbat Aapse for Aa Dekhein Zara, a grungy Johnny Gaddaar's title song and a sensational Abhi Abhi in Jism.

What do you do to take care of your voice?

Initially, I used to be very careful of eating out or eating cold or spicy or too oily food to prevent damages to my voice but I was explained by Anandji uncle of Kalyanji Anandji that one should make our throat used to everything. Because of the amount of travel, it's difficult to be choosy about what we get to eat even if you are staying at a five star hotel. From the age of 11 I've not been averse to having pani puri, cold drinks or ice creams. By eating all this, we strengthened our vocal chords. Daily riyaz is important.

Smart move

Aamir Khan is very particular about his look in the movies he does and the movies too. A few pictures were leaked from the sets of Dhoom 3 in Chicago. So Aamir banned camera phones on the sets. The crew has been given special phones without cameras. He doesn't want movie details to be leaked!

New pair

Rumour has it that Parineeti Chopra will be paired with Shah Rukh Khan in Farah Khan's Happy New Year! That is a big movie for the newcomer and we are sure she will excel in her role.

Shock treatment

The promo of Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola has created a buzz online and recently the posters are out. Very quirky and cheeky, indeed! We love Anushka Sharma's derriere and her too! This movie is very promising!

Something brewing?

Rumour has it that Anushka Sharma and Arjun Kapoor have been bonding big time and have become very close. Now that Ranveer and Anushka are not dating, where will this go? We shall know soon!

SRK keen on Chennai Express

Shah Rukh Khan is taking a keen interest in Chennai Express, directed by Rohit Shetty. He is even supervising the music by Vishal Shekhar at the moment and his approval is needed in all matters.

Flop show

Aiyyaa has flopped big time. It got bad reviews and no takers at the box office either. Rani Mukerji's efforts have been in vain though her work has been praised. Makkhi is doing very well though.

Starting early

Football star David Beckham's daughter Harper is reportedly set to be enrolled in dance classes because her mother Victoria is eager to see her take up a hobby.

The 38-year-old former Spice Girl turned fashion designer thinks dancing is the perfect hobby for her energetic 15-month-old daughter Harper and is eager to see her learn some moves from a professional.

"Victoria and David have got all their children into hobbies at a very young age. The boys have been kicking footballs about since they could walk so it made sense to get Harper into dancing. Plus, Victoria thinks she'll look cute in dance outfits in the school's end-of-term shows," a source said.

Victoria also enjoyed dancing when she was younger and took classes at Laine Theatre Arts musical theatre school in Epsom, Surrey but she previously said that her football husband David has two left feet on the dance floor. “I love music. David loves music - but he can't dance," she had said. — PTI

Parenting trials
Actress Angelina Jolie wants to be her kids' friend when they grow up

The 37-year-old, who raises six kids with fiance Brad Pitt, is looking forward to her brood reaching rebellious stages in their lives, though she knows it will be a tough time for the whole family.

"I am looking forward to them being teenagers. I am looking forward to them trying to pretend they are not doing anything wrong. I'll be their friend and I'll be honest with them and I hope whatever they go through they can talk to me. That's the best I can do.

"I'll try to be as close to them as I am now. So when they get to the point they don't want to talk to me, they know deep down I love them and we have that relationship. It's tough for everyone those years," she said.

Jolie also said she is much less strict with her sons than daughters. — PTI

Masti time

Karan Tacker is enjoying the success of his show Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hain on Star Plus but this festive season he is looking forward to loads of masti in his show, in specials on the channels and also his celebrity appearances.

A festive season is a great bonus for celebrities. What are you doing this Navratri?

I am going to three pandals this Navratri in Surat, Mumbai and Guwahati. I was surprised+ to hear that in Guwahati garba and dandiya are celebrated with vigour. But I am looking forward to some cool fun. I will enjoy the beauty and get a break too. Of course, I have heard it isn’t very safe there, so let’s see.

How do you celebrate Navratri at home?

I am a Punjabi, so as a kid we celebrated Navratras. Feeding nine young girls among other celebrations, was a norm. Now, I hardly get time to do anything. Work takes up all my time.

Buzz is that you are quitting your show?

Yes I have heard that too. But it isn’t true unless they want to replace me. I am happy with the show and the makers. These are just rumours, I am on the show as of now.

You shot for a Diwali special for the channel. Was it fun?

Yes, I enjoy these specials a lot. They give me a good break as we get to sing and dance and break the monotony of the usual shoot. I enjoy dressing up. And mostly I have so much fun that I don’t feel like going back to the serial.

How do you look back on your career?

It has been a good run. I am enjoying and discovering myself. I am a natural actor and don’t push myself to do anything I don’t like. I take each scene as normally as I can and deliver as I don’t like theatrics.

Gokuldham Society in Neela Telefilm’s comic serial Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has gone on red alert. Everyone is so frightened that they have forgotten about Navaratri. While everywhere people are excited about this festival, Gokuldham members are terrified because Jethalal has received a number of unidentified, unmarked and unusual boxes via courier. Nobody, not even Jethalal, knows as to what is there in those boxes. When one of the members cried ‘bomb’, promptly police was called for further investigation.

“This is really dreadful, still the episode has TMKOC flavour of humor and funny acts. I don’t know who has sent me these boxes, and what is in them but nobody is taking any chance. So police is being called and they will tell us about the contents of the boxes. We are just giving our cooperation,” says Dilip Joshi. Neela Telefilm’s produced serial Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltaa Chashmah telecasts Monday to Friday at 8.30 pm on Sab TV

It's when your ambitions dovetail with the goals of others and the mission as a whole that it all comes together; the stars are promoting this synergy. Work hard and use your vision. Be proactive about making the most of shifting circumstances. A positive position of stars means that nothing can harm you; you'll manage matters well and find the right solution to all problems.
