Amritsar, October 15
A sudden drop in temperature and heavy rain today had Amritsar residents running for woollens, marking the beginning of the winters. The temperature dropped to 18 degree Celsius, with thunderstorm also striking through the day.

As the city got in the mood to welcome the winters, the changed weather brought some chill that forced many to find warmth in their woollens. "I had to take out my warm stoles and shawls to comfort myself after the sudden rain," said Latika Madaan, a student of BBKDAV College.

The weather has been quite unpredictable this year. The summers stretched out much as the monsoons were limited to just a cameo. But the showers have made sure that the onset of winters is on time. The Met department has predicted the showers to continue for coming days. "It's a good as well as bad news. Though the temperature has come down and the chill is being felt in the air, it is not a good news for farmers," said Gurbaksh Singh, a retired government officer.

While adults gave mixed reactions to the sudden showers, kids and some youngsters had their fun. Seen soaking in the rain, enjoying the chill and crowding numerous roadside rehriwallas for "masala chai" and "pakoras", the rain brought in many moods of the city residents.

But it also brought in numerous traffic jams and clogged roads. Inconvenience was evident on city roads, as the heavy-traffic areas suffered traffic clogs and jams.

Major reshuffle in city traffic wing
Fallout of corruption complaints against policemen
PK Jaiswar
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, October 15
In a major reshuffle in the traffic wing, the Police Commissioner today shifted a majority of the staff to various police stations in the city. Some new faces have been inducted in the traffic wing.

The decision is apparently the fallout of the recent incident in which pilgrims in the Golden Temple have complained to Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal about the dismal traffic scenario and alleged corrupt practices adopted by the traffic police to fleece tourists and pilgrims visiting the holy city for paying obeisance at Harimandir Sahib.

According to police sources, out of the total 176 staff of the traffic wing, the Police Commissioner had changed 135 traffic policemen, including ASIs. The new faces, which were recruited after 2000, had been deputed in place of the shifted staff.

It is pertinent to mention here that Police Commissioner Ram Singh yesterday placed five traffic policemen, including two ASIs, under suspension following the complaints of misconduct and corruption against them, while Baljit Singh Randhawa, ADCP, was asked to prepare a detailed report about their nexus and modus operandi.

Visitors, especially tourists, going to pay obeisance at Darbar Sahib often complained about the misconduct and corrupt practices of traffic policemen. However, they preferred not to lodge any complaints due to obvious reasons.

The Police Commissioner, while confirming this, said the step was taken following numerous complaints against them. New recruits of clean image had been given a chance to smoothen the traffic scenario in the holy city.

He said whosoever indulging in any corrupt practice would be taken to task.

Meanwhile, the police today shifted the in charge of the Galliara police chowki to police line, while the remaining staff has also been changed. The police sources revealed that the action was taken against them because their work was not satisfactory.

Till the new staff takes over the charge at the police chowki, SHO Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa has been deputed to look after its working.

A police official said though there was no specific complaint against the chowki in charge, senior police authorities were not satisfied with the working of the current chowki in charge Ranjit Singh.

GNDU alumnus gets four-year RI
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, October 15
Additional Sessions Judge Kishore Kumar today sentenced a former law student of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) to four years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) in connection with an abetment to suicide case.

Sourav Mahajan, a final-year student of the Department of Law, GNDU, had committed suicide by jumping before the train near Kathunangal Railway Station on October 17, 2003. The Government Railway Police had found a suicide note in his pocket following which it has booked the then head of the department, Dr MD Singh, and a second- semester student, Harminder Singh Mintu.

A case under Section 306 of the IPC has been registered at the GRP police station.

Sourav took the extreme step after being charged with stealing a mobile phone by Harminder Singh and some other students. In his suicide note, he had alleged that even though Dr Singh could have given him a clean chit seeing his past records, but instead of this he was humiliated by the HoD and the then security officer.

However, the AIG GRP after a thorough probe had given a clean chit to Dr Singh and the security officer. After this, the Punjab Human Rights Commission had also conducted investigations in this connection.

While pronouncing the judgment, the Additional Session Judge said following the GRP reports and statements of the witnesses, Harminder Singh was found guilty in the abetment to suicide case of Sourav.

He sentenced him for four years of rigorous imprisonment, besides Rs 5,000 as fine. He would have to go through six months’ more imprisonment in case he failed to pay the fine.

‘Burrah’ — a film about celebration, bhangra
Neha Saini
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, October 15
Another film, another star cast, but the focus remains the same - youth. The youth defines and dictates many things and trends in this country and one of them is how the Punjabi films should be made. A lot of glamour, fun, peppy dance numbers, campus shots, suave looking men and loads of smart humour.

Throw in some issues they are interested in and the film becomes a complete entertainer. So when actor Yuvraj Hans and Parul Gulati, the pair from upcoming Punjabi flick “Burrah” came visiting the city, the initial curiosity was if the film would be any different?

“It is a different film. Fine, it has all the elements synonymous to youngsters, campus, parties, fun and girls. But the film is not all peachy. It focuses on our cultural and folk legacy of bhangra,” says Yuvraj.

So its a dance flick? “Not completely. But it does have bhangra as its theme. The name itself is suggestive that the film is about celebration. ‘Burrah’ is an expression of happiness, whether we are having fun or doing bhangra,” says Yuvraj.

Settled over its youth-centric topic and relevance, the next thing that comes to the mind is the star cast. With Yuvraj and Harish Verma’s second outing together on the screen, the rest of the star cast consists of newcomers. Leading ladies Parul Gulati and Avantika Hundal, Vikramjit Singh Randhawa, Mohit Bhaskar and many others. “It gives a fresh appeal to the film and the audience will see new faces,” says Parul.

While the film has a youthful flavor and stars young actors, the state of youth in the state remains questionable. With Rahul Gandhi’s statement of facts saying that seven out of 10 youngsters in Punjab are addicted to drugs, Yuvraj gives a agreeing nod. “He is right. Drug menace is eating the youth in Punjab alive. It is a contributing factor to the growing incidences of violence and crime in the state. Irrespective of the rural or urban background, many youngsters are falling easy prey to drug addiction.”

Yuvraj, whose father singer Hans Raj Hans is busy fighting the menace through the principles of Sufism, desires to join him in his campaign. “He is actually taking the fight head on, involving masses and classes. I would like to join him as I feel strongly for the cause and may be this would be the first thing I do tomorrow morning,” shares the actor.

Back to the film, “Burrah” marks the debut of Bollywood’s Mukul Dev in Punjabi film industry. Music for the film is given by Gurmeet Singh, who has given music for hits like “Yaar Anmulle”. Hemant Sagar Sharma is the director and the film will be released on October 19.
